Annona muricata have been extensively used in traditional medicine to treat multiple diseases, including cancers. This study evaluated the genotoxic potential and antigenotoxic activities of A. muricata aqueous and ethanolic leaf extracts by employing an in vivo erythrocyte rodent micronucleus assay. Different doses (187.5, 375, and 750 mg/kg) of both extracts were administered orally for 5 days alone and combined with cyclophosphamide (CP, 60 mg/kg) to BALB/c mice. Also, it was administered orally to Wistar rats for 5 days through the final stage of gestation. No genotoxic or cytotoxic effects were observed in the two adult rodent models when A. muricata was administered orally nor in newborn rats transplacentally exposed to the extracts. Moreover, A. muricata aqueous and ethanolic leaf extracts demonstrated a protective effect against CP-induced DNA damage. Due to its lack of genotoxic effect and its capacity to decrease DNA damage, A. muricata is likely to open an interest field regarding its potential safe use in clinical applications.

Members of the family Rhinonyssidae are tiny hematophagous endoparasitic mites that inhabit the nasal cavities of birds and can cause trauma to their hosts. Traditionally, identifying species in this group has relied on observing their morphometrical characteristics. Nevertheless, determining species within this particular group has become more challenging due to the rising number of newly discovered species. Moreover, the morphometrical traits vary depending on the specific genus or group of species being studied. In this study, the complete internal transcribed spacer ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, and ITS2 regions of the ribosomal DNA from eighteen species of rhinonyssid mites belonging to four genera were sequenced to assess the utility of this genomic region in resolving taxonomic questions in this group and to estimate the phylogenetic relationships among the species. Mites were collected by dissecting the nasal cavities of birds under a stereomicroscope. Specimens used for morphometrical analyses were cleared in 85% lactic acid for 1–48 h and mounted in Hoyer’s medium. Other specimens were preserved at −20 °C for molecular studies. From the data obtained in this study, it can be concluded that a thorough review and an accurate morphometrical identification and determination of the discriminatory traits are needed in this group of mites. Moreover, although the ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 fragment solves different taxonomic and phylogenetic problems at the species level, it would be necessary to test new molecular markers, or even a combination of nuclear and mitochondrial markers or different domains of the nuclear 28S rDNA, to discover a reliable taxonomic situation for rhinonyssids.

People living with dementia (PLWD) and their family caregivers report higher rates of having a sedentary lifestyle than their non-disabled peers do. This study analyzed the effectiveness of an intervention designed to increase physical activity among PLWD and their family caregivers in primary health care settings. A cluster-randomized multicenter clinical trial was conducted. Participants from four health centers were randomly assigned to the intervention group (IG) or the control group (CG) in a 1:1 ratio using Epidat software. After a seven-day period with a digital pedometer (Omron Hj-321 lay-UPS), participants were asked to complete the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF). PLWD and caregivers allocated to the IG were given brief advice, educational materials and an additional 15 min appointment to prescribe an individualized physical activity plan. Seventy PLWD and 80 caregivers were assigned to the CG and 70 PLWD and 96 caregivers were assigned to the IG. Results of the pedometer assessment show that in PLWD, the IG’s activity increased by 52.89 aerobic steps at 6 months and the CG’s activity decreased by 615.93 aerobic steps, showing a net increase in the IG of 668.82 (95% CI: −444.27 to 1781.91; p = 0.227). For caregivers in the IG, activity increased by 356.91 aerobic steps and in the CG it decreased by 12.95 aerobic steps, showing a net increase in favor of the IG of 369.86 (95%CI: −659.33 to 1399.05; p = 0.476). The effectiveness of interventions to increase physical activity in this group of people with dementia and their caregivers did not achieved positive results overall but may have provided suggestions for family physicians and physical therapists to improve physical activity among people with dementia and their families.

Introducción: En la implementación de estrategias en salud, como la de lactancia materna, los recursos humanos son indispensables para lograr el éxito de estas. Objetivo: Evaluar las prácticas personales y los conocimientos sobre lactancia materna (LM) en el país, de profesionales de la salud de tres Servicios de Salud de referencia de la capital y de San Lorenzo-Paraguay. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio descriptivo, transversal, realizado con 147 profesionales de la salud de tres hospitales materno-infantiles de referencia. Fueron recolectados datos sociodemográficos, de prácticas y conocimientos sobre la lactancia materna (LM) a través de encuesta auto administrada. Se contó con aprobación de Comité de Ética. Resultados: el 65,3% (n=96) de los participantes tenían hijos, de los cuales 95,8% (n=91) fue alimentado con LM y el 81,3% (n=78) hizo LM exclusiva con mediana de duración de 6 meses. El 36,1% (n=53) recibió capacitación sobre LM. El 61,9% (n=91) conoce concepto de LM exclusiva, 41,5% (n=61) identificó beneficios de la LM y 47,6% (n=70) riesgos ante su no consumo. El 81,6% (n=120) conoce sobre apego precoz. El 72,1% (n=106) conoce las contraindicaciones de LM. El 87,1% (n=128) conoce las posibles complicaciones, el 67,3% (n=99) tiene conocimientos para prevenir las complicaciones. Conclusión: Dos tercios del personal de salud maneja conceptos sobre LM, solo 4 de cada 10 profesionales conoce los beneficios de la LM y los riesgos de la lactancia artificial. México está catalogado como un país megadiverso, cuenta con amplia diversidad biológica y cultural. Además, destaca como uno de los países que son centro de origen y domesticación de plantas importantes, teniendo en el territorio nacional entre el 10-12% de todas las especies del mundo, y de estas el 50-60% son endémicas. Lamentablemente mucha de esta riqueza se encuentra sujeta a protección especial, amenazada, o en peligro de extinción. El cultivo de tejidos vegetales es una herramienta biotecnológica que permite la obtención de plantas de manera rápida, eficiente y en grandes cantidades, convirtiéndose en una estrategia para mitigar los problemas que enfrentan algunas especies. Por lo tanto, es importante el uso de la ciencia y tecnología en la recuperación de especies mexicanas, así como fomentar su estudio, propagación y conservación con el fin de realizar propuestas de aprovechamiento sustentable de la flora mexicana.

In response to different types and intensities of mechanical force, cells modulate their physical properties and adapt their plasma membrane (PM). Caveolae are PM nano-invaginations that contribute to mechanoadaptation, buffering tension changes. However, whether core caveolar proteins contribute to PM tension accommodation independently from the caveolar assembly is unknown. Here we provide experimental and computational evidence supporting that caveolin-1 confers deformability and mechanoprotection independently from caveolae, through modulation of PM curvature. Freeze-fracture electron microscopy reveals that caveolin-1 stabilizes non-caveolar invaginations-dolines-capable of responding to low-medium mechanical forces, impacting downstream mechanotransduction and conferring mechanoprotection to cells devoid of caveolae. Upon cavin-1/PTRF binding, doline size is restricted and membrane buffering is limited to relatively high forces, capable of flattening caveolae. Thus, caveolae and dolines constitute two distinct albeit complementary components of a buffering system that allows cells to adapt efficiently to a broad range of mechanical stimuli. We thank R. Las técnicas de levantamiento digital terrestres como la fotogrametría (SfM) y el láser escáner 3D (TLS) poseen ciertas limitaciones en función de las herramientas utilizadas y de la geometría, condiciones de iluminación y distancia del elemento con el que se trabaja. Por ello, el objetivo de este estudio es describir un método para el correcto levantamiento digital de elementos altos (con tipología de torre) cuando se trabaja con dichas restricciones, así como verificar la pertinencia de su utilidad. Dicha metodología se aplica a dos torres campanario situadas en Ravenna (Italia) permitiendo realizar una serie de ensayos y razonamientos sobre la precisión y la calidad de la textura obtenida en los modelos finales.

espanolLa presente investigacion se realiza en el segundo semestre del 2018 y tuvo como proposito identificar el desarrollo de las habilidades de pensamiento critico, creatividad e innovacion y resolucion de problemas en Ciencias noveno ano, Costa Rica; las cuales, deben ser abordadas entre otras 10 habilidades mas segun la propuesta o transformacion curricular del Ministerio de Educacion Publica (MEP). El paradigma empleado es naturalista, con un enfoque cualitativo dominante y un diseno fenomenologico, donde se aplican tres estudios de casos relacionados con temas sobre a la vida cotidiana, con el fin de determinar el desarrollo de la habilidad en el proceso de ensenanza y el aprendizaje. Los sujetos de investigacion son 73 personas estudiantes de tres colegios nocturnos de la Direccion Regional de Educacion de Heredia. El analisis de la informacion se hace mediante una rubrica preestablecida donde se determina el grado de desarrollo de la habilidad; entre los principales hallazgos se obtiene que las tres habilidades estudiadas tienen un desarrollo bajo en las lecciones de ciencias, lo que da indicios a que la potenciacion de las mismas, en el aula, no son abordadas, a pesar de que el programa de estudio de Ciencias III ciclo lo exige; por lo que, es fundamental que sea abordada integralmente con los docentes mediante capacitacion y se comprenda e interiorice la importancia de una mediacion pedagogica en la clase, que potencie las habilidades mediante la metodologia de indagacion para Ciencias EnglishThe present investigation was conducted during the second semester of 2018 and its purpose was to identify the development of the critical thought, creativity and innovation and problem resolution in the Sciences of the 9th year, Costa Rica, which should be addressed within other 10 more abilities, according to the proposal or curricular transformation by the Public Education Ministry. The paradigm used was naturalist with focus on the dominant qualitative and a phenomenological design, where three case studies related to everyday life were applied with the purpose of determining the development of the ability in the teaching and learning processes, the investigation subjects were 73 students from three different night schools in Heredia Educational Region. The information analysis was done by a preestablished rubric where the degree of ability development was determined. Among the main findings, it was discovered that the 3 abilities that were studied have a low development in the Science classes. Which indicates that the empowerment of these abilities has not been addressed in the classroom. Although this is required by the Science Study Program Circle III; therefore, it is fundamental that this be addressed in an integral manner with the docents through training in order to understand and internalize the importance of the pedagogical mediation in the classroom that increase the abilities applying the methodology using inquiries for Science.

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by alternating periods of exacerbation and remission. Surgical resection is not curative and postoperative recurrence (POR) remains a challenge in these patients. The aim of this study was to identify clinical variables that influence the risk of symptomatic anastomotic POR in patients with ileo-colonic Crohn's disease.A retrospective study of Crohn's disease patients who had undergone ileo-colic resection between January 2014 and December 2018 was performed. For each patient, data including demographic information, Crohn's disease clinical setting, preoperative radiological data, operative and histological data, pre- and postoperative medication history and postoperative clinical course, including recurrence of disease, were extracted. Symptomatic anastomotic POR was defined as symptoms of Crohn's disease in the presence of confirmed anastomotic POR (endoscopic and/or radiological POR).For the study period, 104 patients were eligible and included for analysis. The cumulative probability of symptomatic anastomotic POR was 14%, 30%, 42%, 50% and 50% at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 years, respectively. Two clinical variables on multivariate analysis were associated with increased risk of symptomatic anastomotic POR, namely age17 years at diagnosis [hazard ratio (HR) 2.17, p = 0.019] and gastrointestinal involvement (extent)30 cm (HR 1.85, p = 0.048).This study describes the natural history of POR after ileo-colic resection for Crohn's disease, as defined by endoscopic, radiological and clinical outcomes. Age17 years at diagnosis and gastrointestinal involvement (extent)30 cm were independent risk factors for symptomatic anastomotic POR.

La estomatitis asociada al tratamiento con inhibidores mTOR (EAIm) es un evento adverso que puede ser confundido con la mucositis asociada a la quimioterapia convencional. Ambos son procesos diferentes que requieren abordajes diferentes por parte del personal de enfermería. La correcta identificación y manejo de la EAIm favorecería una mejora en la calidad de vida del paciente, la resolución temprana de las lesiones y la continuidad del tratamiento. En este artículo presentamos una puesta al día del conocimiento disponible sobre la valoración, prevención y manejo de esta complicación, basándonos en la evidencia disponible y en las recomendaciones facilitadas por las principales guías clínicas. Además, dado que no existe un cuerpo de conocimiento suficientemente desarrollado, analizamos las posibles implicaciones que puede tener para la investigación.

La enfermedad hepática grasa no alcohólica (EHGNA) es una condición altamente prevalente y usualmente relacionada con el sobrepeso y la obesidad, pero afecta al 10% de la población no obesa en el mundo, con tendencia al aumento. Mecanismos diferentes a los tradicionalmente relacionados con el exceso de grasa corporal, como algunos polimorfismos genéticos y la exposición a ciertos factores ambientales, se han asociado con el desarrollo de esta entidad. Comparados con individuos sanos, las personas con EHGNA tienen con mayor frecuencia desarreglos metabólicos, como resistencia a la insulina y síndrome metabólico. El curso de la enfermedad hepática pareciera ser más benigno en los individuos no obesos en comparación con las personas obesas, pero el riesgo de desarrollar enfermedades como la diabetes mellitus pareciera ser mayor. En Latinoamérica se ha reportado una de las prevalencias más altas de EHGNA, sin embargo, el fenómeno en personas no obesas se ha estudiado principalmente en Asia y los datos en poblaciones latinas son prácticamente inexistentes. El propósito con esta revisión narrativa es sintetizar la información disponible acerca de la EHGNA en personas no obesas, haciendo énfasis en la población latina.

El artículo analiza la “campaña por el mejoramiento de la vivienda campesina”, puesta en marcha por el Instituto de Crédito Territorial durante la República Liberal (1930-1946). En contraste con las narrativas tradicionales sobre la arquitectura moderna en Colombia, que ignoran los experimentos en arquitectura rural o los consideran parte de una prehistoria, aquí se muestra que la vivienda campesina influyó en el posterior desarrollo de la vivienda social moderna. El artículo argumenta que la campaña de vivienda rural era un elemento central de una noción de lo moderno en Colombia, que se basaba en el próspero mediano propietario campesino.

Background The aim of this study was to analyze the association of physical activity and its intensity with arterial stiffness and vascular aging and differences by sex in a Spanish population with intermediate cardiovascular risk. Methods Cross-sectional study. A total of 2475 individuals aged 35–75 years participated in the study. Brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) was measured using a VaSera VS-1500® device. Based on the age and sex percentile presented by the participants, the latter were classified as follows: those with a percentile above 90 and presenting established cardiovascular disease were classified as early vascular aging (EVA); those with a percentile between 10 and 90 were classified as normal vascular aging (NVA) and those with a percentile below 10 were classified as healthy vascular aging (HVA). Physical activity was analyzed through the short version of the Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (MLTPAQ). Results The mean age of the participants was 61.34 ± 7.70 years, with 61.60% men. Of the total sample, 86% were sedentary (83% men vs 90% women). The total physical activity showed a negative association with baPWV (β = − 0.045; 95% CI − 0.080 to − 0.009). Intense physical activity showed a negative relationship with baPWV (β = − 0.084; 95% CI − 0.136 to − 0.032). The OR of the total physical activity and the intense physical activity carried out by the subjects classified as NVA with respect to those classified as HVA was OR = 0.946; (95% CI 0.898 to 0.997) and OR = 0.903; (95% CI 0.840 to 0.971), and of those classified as EVA it was OR = 0.916; (95% CI 0.852 to 0.986) and OR = 0.905; (95% CI 0.818 to 1.000). No association was found with moderate- or low-intensity physical activity. Conclusions The results of this study suggest that, when intense physical activity is performed, the probability of presenting vascular aging is lower. In the analysis by sex, this association is only observed in men.

The need to diversify tourist activities and offers has led to the appearance of new tourist modalities, among which agrotourism emerges as one of the most singular, as it facilitates tourists to have interactive and cognitive experiences about life traditions in the rural world. The general objective of this research is to create a procedure for the design of an agrotourism product in the province of Pinar del Río, specifically in the peninsula of Guanahacabibes, focused on its rural area, which will allow the use of the natural, historical-cultural and agricultural resources existing in the area. All of this will be supported by the country's tourism development objectives and the growing demand for this type of tourism. A procedure with a logical sequence is presented where the bases for the development of agrotourism are established, which will facilitate the development of the research with the participation of fundamental actors of the region; in the first instance, the methods were determined, as well as the primary and secondary sources to be used as an initial and preparatory process, which made it possible to obtain the results of the research. A characterization of the study area was prepared and a diagnosis of the current particularities of tourism in the area was obtained, as well as the identification of tourist attractions based on interviews and a workshop. Results were obtained where it was established that the creation of an agrotourism product in the area was indeed necessary.

Introducción. El carcinoma hepatocelular (CHC) en los pacientes con cirrosis hepática es una indicación frecuente de trasplante de hígado y una causa de muerte por diagnóstico tardío. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir las características demográficas, clínicas y de laboratorio de pacientes con CHC sobre hígado cirrótico, así como el estadio al momento del diagnóstico, el manejo ofrecido y la supervivencia en función del estadio, según la clasificación BCLC. Metodología. Estudio observacional de cohorte retrospectiva que incluyó pacientes atendidos en un centro en Colombia entre el 1 de enero de 2012 y el 31 de diciembre de 2018, mayores de 18 años con hepatocarcinoma. La recolección de la información se realizó a partir de la revisión de historias clínicas. Para el análisis estadístico se utilizó SPSS versión 23.0. Resultados. En el estudio se incluyeron 219 pacientes con CHC y cirrosis hepática de base. El 58,9% fueron de sexo masculino y la mediana de edad fue de 65 años. La distribución etiológica de la cirrosis para alcohol, esteatohepatitis no alcohólica (NASH), criptogénica, infección por virus de la hepatitis B y C fue de 30,6%, 21,4%, 19,1%, 12,2% y 7,7%, respectivamente. El 49,3% tenían clasificación Child-Pugh A, el 37% B y el 13,7% C, al momento del diagnóstico. La clasificación del estadio BCLC se distribuyó así: 0=4 (1,8%), A=94 (42,9%), B=26 (11,9%), C=39 (17,8%) y D=56 (25,6%). La supervivencia, de acuerdo con la clasificación BCLC, fue para BCLC 0=60 meses, A=84,6 meses, B=28,7 meses, C=10,7 meses y para BCLC D=7 meses. Conclusión. A pesar de encontrarse una mejor supervivencia en esta serie, en comparación con la hallada en otra serie realizada en nuestro centro en 2009, y similar a lo reportado en el mundo, el diagnóstico tardío continúa siendo la principal causa de mortalidad en los pacientes con CHC.

El síndrome de Osler-Weber-Rendu, también conocido como telangiectasia hemorrágica hereditaria, es una enfermedad de herencia autosómica dominante de baja prevalencia, que se caracteriza por unas paredes delgadas de los vasos sanguíneos que conducen a malformaciones arteriovenosas, principalmente en cerebro, pulmón e hígado, pero que pueden potencialmente afectar cualquier otro órgano. La principal manifestación clínica son las epistaxis recurrentes; sin embargo, también pueden aparecer otras manifestaciones como hemoptisis o sangrado gastrointestinal, y telangiectasias mucocutáneas, entre otras. Su expresión clínica varía de un paciente a otro y el diagnóstico usualmente se basa en los criterios de Curazao. Se describe el caso de una paciente con historia de 12 años de epistaxis recurrente, a quien se le diagnosticó síndrome de Osler-Weber-Rendu hace dos años. Fue referida al servicio de Hepatología por presentar compromiso hepático, además de malformaciones arteriovenosas cerebrales y pulmonares. El manejo óptimo de la telangiectasia hemorrágica en esta paciente por parte de los diferentes especialistas, apoyado en los estudios de imagenología, ha permitido que la paciente tenga una buena calidad de vida hasta el momento. Se presenta el caso de esta paciente de 46 años y se realiza una revisión corta de la literatura.

Lisianthus es una planta ornamental, que en los últimos años adquirió una gran importancia en el mercado nacional e internacional por su belleza y variedad de colores, este cultivo tradicionalmente se establece en suelo y hay poca información en relación con sus hábitos de crecimiento y desarrollo en sistemas hidropónicos. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar por medio de imágenes digitales el cambio en el color de las hojas y de las flores en el cultivo de lisianthus en hidroponía con diferentes soluciones nutritivas. Las soluciones nutritivas (SN) ensayadas en el cultivo fueron cuatro, como testigo fue la solución Steiner (SN1) y el resto de los tratamientos fueron soluciones modificadas, en la (SN2) se utilizó el doble de la concentración de la solución Steiner, mientras que la (SN3) fue adicionada con una cantidad elevada de K y la SN4 con una mayor cantidad de calcio (18 mEq L-1), se evaluó altura y número de hojas obteniendo en ambos una diferencia significativa en la SN1 con respecto a la SN4, en cuanto a las características fenotípicas de la hoja y flor mediante los valores de RGB el color de la hoja no se vio afectada por los tratamientos a partir de las modificaciones que se le realizaron a la solución Steiner, la variable R solo presentó diferencia significativa en la SN1 con respecto a la SN4 con mayor cantidad de calcio, sin embargo no ocurrió lo mismo para las demás variables y solo este fenómeno se presentó en el día 61 DDT, en cuanto al efecto de la solución nutritiva sobre el color de las flores, se encontró una diferencia significativa en las variables R en la solución 1 (Steiner) G hubo diferencia en la solución con concentraciones altas de potasio lo mismo ocurrió para las variables artif iciales utilizadas.

A 20-year-old postpartum woman developed paresthesias and intolerable pain over the volar aspect of the first through fourth fingers, after radial artery cannulation (RAC) during cesarean section. Ultrasonography did not show any hematoma in the forearm. Urgent carpal tunnel release and median nerve decompression were performed, resulting in complete disappearance of symptoms.Acute median nerve compression is a rare injury in its own, but it is even rarer as a complication of RAC. Urgent decompression should be performed as soon as possible to avoid future neurological deficits.

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention in primary health care designed to increase physical activity in people with dementia and their family caregivers.Methods: A cluster-randomized multicentre clinical trial was carried out.Participants: 140 people with dementia (median age 82 years;63.6% women) and 176 caregivers (median age 62 years ;72.7% women). Seventy patients and 80 caregivers were assigned to the Control Group (CG) and 70 patients and 96 caregivers to the Intervention Group (IG). The physical activity was measured with the pedometer and with the IPAQ-SF questionnaire. The intervention consisted of applying in primary care the program promoting physical activity (PEPAF) for 3 months. The changes observed at 6 months were analyzed. Results:In people with dementia, in the pedometer assessment a decrease was observed in both groups, but it was larger in the CG both in the total number step/day lower in the IG than in the CG and in the aerobic steps / day (52.89 vs -615.93). The activity reported with the IPAQ-SF decreased more in IG, both in the MET/min/week (-258.470 vs -148.23) and in the MVPA min/week. In caregivers the pedometer assessment showed that total steps/day increased more in the IG, as did aerobic steps/day (356.91 vs -12.95). The IPAQ-SF a smaller increase in global activity was declared in the IG than in the CG (545.25 MET/min/week vs 609.55), but the increase in vigorous activity was greater. No differences were found in changes in the functional status and the cognitive performances of people with dementia nor in the mental health in the caregivers, but systolic blood pressure, the Family APGAR and overload in the IG did improve.Conclusions: The results suggest that the intervention carried out may be effective on physical activity in both patients and caregivers. It can also improve systolic blood pressure, the Family APGAR and overload in caregivers. This is the first study to implement a primary care intervention aimed at simultaneously increasing physical activity in people with dementia and their relatives. These results reinforce the importance of using objective measures in clinical trials in people with dementia.Trial registration number: NCT 02044887.

The data on the relationship between insulin resistance and vascular ageing are limited. The aim of this study was to explore the association of different indices of insulin resistance with vascular ageing in an adult Caucasian population without cardiovascular disease. We selected 501 individuals without cardiovascular disease (mean age: 55.9 years, 50.3% women) through random sampling stratified by sex and age. Arterial stiffness was evaluated by measuring the carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and brachial-to-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). The participants were classified into three groups according to the degree of vascular ageing: early vascular ageing (EVA), normal vascular ageing (NVA) and healthy vascular ageing (HVA). Insulin resistance was evaluated with the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and another five indices. The prevalence of HVA and EVA was 8.4% and 21.4%, respectively, when using cfPWV, and 7.4% and 19.2%, respectively, when using baPWV. The deterioration of vascular ageing, with both measurements, presented as an increase in all the analysed indices of insulin resistance. In the multiple regression analysis and logistic regression analysis, the indices of insulin resistance showed a positive association with cfPWV and baPWV and with EVA.

Background: mHealth technologies could help to improve cardiovascular health; however, their effect on arterial stiffness and hemodynamic parameters has not been explored to date. Objective: To evaluate the effect of a mHealth intervention, at 3 and 12 months, on arterial stiffness and central hemodynamic parameters in a sedentary population with overweight and obesity. Methods: Randomised controlled clinical trial (Evident 3 study). 253 subjects were included: 127 in the intervention group (IG) and 126 in the control group (CG). The IG subjects were briefed on the use of the Evident 3 app and a smart band (Mi Band 2, Xiaomi) for 3 months to promote healthy lifestyles. All measurements were recorded in the baseline visit and at 3 and 12 months. The carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) and the central hemodynamic parameters were measured using a SphigmoCor System® device, whereas the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and the Cardio Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI) were measured using a VaSera VS-2000® device. Results: Of the 253 subjects who attended the initial visit, 237 (93.7%) completed the visit at 3 months of the intervention, and 217 (85.3%) completed the visit at 12 months of the intervention. At 12 months, IG showed a decrease in peripheral augmentation index (PAIx) (−3.60; 95% CI −7.22 to −0.00) and ejection duration (ED) (−0.82; 95% CI −1.36 to −0.27), and an increase in subendocardial viability ratio (SEVR) (5.31; 95% CI 1.18 to 9.44). In CG, cfPWV decreased at 3 months (−0.28 m/s; 95% CI −0.54 to −0.02) and at 12 months (−0.30 m/s, 95% CI −0.54 to −0.05), central diastolic pressure (cDBP) decreased at 12 months (−1.64 mm/Hg; 95% CI −3.19 to −0.10). When comparing the groups we found no differences between any variables analyzed. Conclusions: In sedentary adults with overweight or obesity, the multicomponent intervention (Smartphone app and an activity-tracking band) for 3 months did not modify arterial stiffness or the central hemodynamic parameters, with respect to the control group. However, at 12 months, CG presented a decrease of cfPWV and cDBP, whereas IG showed a decrease of PAIx and ED and an increase of SEVR.

Tejocote has been used traditionally in Mexico since Pre-Hispanic times and currently its cultivation it is considered of lesser economic importance, is distributed mainly in the States of Mexico, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Chiapas, Michoacán, Hidalgo and Morelos. The tejocote groups together more than 150 species around the world, these 93 types are in Mexico, further studies in this species are scarce. Therefore this research was the analysis of physical and chemical strains of tejocote at the Universidad Politécnica de Francisco I. Madero. The results show that the criolla variety possesses a 65.64% humidity, on the other hand the highest percentage of protein was obtained in Calpan gold variety (3.80%), for the ether extract the criolla variety has a 41.11% fiber, criolla variety was the one that obtained the highest percentage (16.71%), °Brix criolla variety presented the higher value, which present greater weight was the Chapeado variety. This results will be a contribution to the added value given to these.

Medellin has been a privileged subject in Colombian cinema. In films whose stories take place in Medellin and movies' plots that revolve around the production of Medellin’s space, themes like social exclusion and violence become representational elements associated to marginality and segregation, as well as to struggles over the control of the urban territory and its correlates expressed on female and male bodies. By drawing on emotional geography, this article examines these films to explain how Medellin is constructed visually and discursively to elaborate stories based on segregation, exclusion along race and class, and the armed conflict that Colombia has experienced in its recent history, a conflict of which Medellin has been a battleground. Additionally, it becomes clear that social conflict in Medellin is a multi-scalar process. The ways in which political and social tensions have been experienced in the city—and their correlates in the production of urban spaces—are fundamentally shaped by the nature and structure of the urban territories (and their geographies) where conflict materializes (and dialectically, territories are shaped by different forms of violence and conflict). In visual narratives, stories (or topics) unfold at these multiple sites of urban conflict. These topics are representations built on dichotomies like inclusion/exclusion, center/periphery, and masculine/feminine, depicting Medellin as an ill city, an urban collection of geographies that suffer from an illness of which drug trafficking is its main cause and violence its main symptom.

The design and construction of a prototype of an artificial surface flow wetland was carried out with the aim of purifying domestic waste water. Field data was taken the reactor was designed and built to assess the plant's (Canna glauca) efficiency in sewage treatment. The location, available surface, and the influent flow were considered for the design; as well as available surface and the flow of influence of the influent the hydraulic retention, the size of the rock bed, the volume of the storage tank, resistance (mechanical, presence of sulfates and cleaning and sanitization substance) and permeability were considered to ensure its service life. A prototype was built where water quality was characterized by a HI 9828-0® multiparametric probe, in the reactor tributary ans effluent. Within the most relevant results is that the amount of oxygen, pH, EC, resistivity, STDs, salinity and ORP, are parameters that were favored with the presence of the aquatic plant for the purification of waste water

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) during fetal or neonatal stages has been involved in lung growth and differentiation process. We studied the effects of maternal exposure to enalapril during late gestation (G13-G21) on lungs from their offsprings. Pregnant rats were administered with enalapril (2,85 mg/kg/day) and lungs analyzed at postnatal ages, significant difference between P0 and P30. Enalapril-treatment did not modify ACE activity in mothers, but decreased significantly in P0 treated-pups suggesting direct placental drug transference. sACE expression increased with age in both groups. AT1 receptors expression was high and localized in alveolar, bronchiole and endothelium cells. We detected larger but fewer alveoli with decreased septation at earlier postnatal stage in enalapril-treated pups. Quantification of immunopositive nuclei demonstrated that in treated pups the proliferation impairs in newborn lungs and thus progressively increased during two postnatal weeks, at difference with controls animals, where the highest proliferation levels were at P0 and then decreased significantly. In coincidence, high α-smooth muscle actin staining at the tips of developing secondary septal structures was observed at P15, evidencing an active elastogenesis. In summary, decreased ACE activity produced histomorphological changes and an impaired cellular proliferation at the saccular stage; however an active proliferation and elastogenesis, at later stages, suggest that the developing lung has the capacity to recover once treatment was stopped. Alterations in RAS function could contribute to the abnormalities in lung development tissue indicating that the system is one intrinsic factor necessary to differentiation and alveolarization process. However, other local factors could be involved in this mechanism.

Transcriptomics studies are available to evaluate the potential toxicity of nanomaterials in plants, and many highlight their effect on stress-responsive genes. However, a comparative analysis of overall expression changes suggests a low impact on the transcriptome. Environmental challenges like pathogens, saline, or drought stress induce stronger transcriptional responses than nanoparticles. Clearly, plants did not have the chance to evolve specific gene regulation in response to novel nanomaterials; but they use common regulatory circuits with other stress responses. A shared effect with abiotic stress is the inhibition of genes for root development and pathogen response. Other works are reviewed here, which also converge on these results.

Background: To date, 750 000 patients with COVID-19 worldwide have required mechanical ventilation and thus are at high risk of acute brain dysfunction (coma and delirium). We aimed to investigate the prevalence of delirium and coma, and risk factors for delirium in critically ill patients with COVID-19, to aid the development of strategies to mitigate delirium and associated sequelae. Methods: This multicentre cohort study included 69 adult intensive care units (ICUs), across 14 countries. We included all patients (aged ≥18 years) admitted to participating ICUs with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection before April 28, 2020. Patients who were moribund or had life-support measures withdrawn within 24 h of ICU admission, prisoners, patients with pre-existing mental illness, neurodegenerative disorders, congenital or acquired brain damage, hepatic coma, drug overdose, suicide attempt, or those who were blind or deaf were excluded. We collected de-identified data from electronic health records on patient demographics, delirium and coma assessments, and management strategies for a 21-day period. Additional data on ventilator support, ICU length of stay, and vital status was collected for a 28-day period. The primary outcome was to determine the prevalence of delirium and coma and to investigate any associated risk factors associated with development of delirium the next day. We also investigated predictors of number of days alive without delirium or coma. These outcomes were investigated using multivariable regression. Findings: Between Jan 20 and April 28, 2020, 4530 patients with COVID-19 were admitted to 69 ICUs, of whom 2088 patients were included in the study cohort. The median age of patients was 64 years (IQR 54 to 71) with a median Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) II of 40·0 (30·0 to 53·0). 1397 (66·9%) of 2088 patients were invasively mechanically ventilated on the day of ICU admission and 1827 (87·5%) were invasively mechanical ventilated at some point during hospitalisation. Infusion with sedatives while on mechanical ventilation was common: 1337 (64·0%) of 2088 patients were given benzodiazepines for a median of 7·0 days (4·0 to 12·0) and 1481 (70·9%) were given propofol for a median of 7·0 days (4·0 to 11·0). Median Richmond Agitation–Sedation Scale score while on invasive mechanical ventilation was –4 (–5 to –3). 1704 (81·6%) of 2088 patients were comatose for a median of 10·0 days (6·0 to 15·0) and 1147 (54·9%) were delirious for a median of 3·0 days (2·0 to 6·0). Mechanical ventilation, use of restraints, and benzodiazepine, opioid, and vasopressor infusions, and antipsychotics were each associated with a higher risk of delirium the next day (all p≤0·04), whereas family visitation (in person or virtual) was associated with a lower risk of delirium (p

This article includes the systematization of the redesign process of the Master's in Education curriculum with Emphasis on English Learning from the National University. Several Inputs are presented to justify why a redesign, derived from the execution of a workshop and curricular updates. International and national trends in the field of teaching English are shown, focused on improving the quality of language teaching and learning, based on curricular flexibility, emerging methods and approaches. The particular contribution of the postgraduate program, its nature, the elements of curricular innovation and the components of pedagogical training are identified. Finally, the foundation of the redesign is exposed through the object of study and the purpose of knowledge, as well as the different disciplinary areas and curricular axes that support the new plan. El presente artículo incluye la sistematización del proceso de rediseño del plan de estudios de la Maestría en Educación con Énfasis en Aprendizaje del Inglés de la Universidad Nacional. Se presentan insumos que justifican el por qué del rediseño, derivados de la ejecución de un taller y actualizaciones curriculares. Se muestran tendencias internacionales y nacionales en el campo de la enseñanza del inglés, enfocado en el mejoramiento de la calidad de enseñanza y aprendizaje del idioma, a partir de la flexibilidad curricular, métodos y enfoques emergentes. Se identifica el aporte particular del posgrado, su naturaleza, los elementos de innovación curricular y los componentes de formación pedagógica. Por último, se expone la fundamentación del rediseño mediante el objeto de estudio y la finalidad del conocimiento, así como las diferentes áreas disciplinares y ejes curriculares que sustentan el nuevo plan.

Objective To evaluate the coronavirus disease 2019 perioperative infection rate and mortality rate of patients undergoing urological surgeries during the early pandemic period in Spain. Methods This was a non-interventional multicenter prospective study carried out from 9 March to 3 May 2020 in two urology departments in Madrid, Spain. Clinical, microbiological and radiological data of patients who underwent surgery were collected from computerized medical records. Results A total of 148 patients were included in the study, and 141 were analyzed for nosocomial infection risk, after excluding previous and concomitant severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 infections. Elective surgeries represented 76.6% of the procedures, whereas emergent surgeries represented 23.4%. Preoperative screening was carried out with polymerase chain reaction test in 34 patients, all were negative. A total of 14 patients also had chest X-ray (not suspicious in all cases). Three patients (2.1%) developed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 nosocomial infection (symptoms developed between the third day after surgery to the 14th day after hospital discharge). Time from admission to a compatible clinical case was 5.5 days (4-12 days). Two patients underwent surgery with concomitant diagnosis of coronavirus disease. The mortality rate due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 infection is 0.7%, and the specific mortality rate in patients undergoing surgery with community-acquired coronavirus disease 2019 infection was 50% (1/2). Conclusions The nosocomial severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 infection rate was low in patients undergoing urological surgical procedures during the peak of the pandemic in Madrid. With appropriate perioperative screening, urological surgical activity can be carried out in safety conditions.

This study assesses the effect of an intervention to reduce the disruptive behaviours (DB) presented by care recipient users of adult day care centres (ADCC), thereby reducing caregiver overload. While ADCC offer beneficial respite for family caregivers, the DB that many care recipients show promote resistance to attending these centres, which can be a great burden on their family caregivers.Randomized controlled clinical trial.The study was carried out with 130 family caregivers of people attending seven ADCC in the municipality of Salamanca (Spain), randomly distributed into intervention and control groups. The intervention was applied across eight sessions, one per week, in groups of 8-10 people where caregivers were trained in the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) model of functional behaviour analysis. The primary outcome was the reduction of DB measured with the Revised Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist (RMBPC).An average reduction in the RMBPC of 4.34 points was obtained in the intervention group after applying the intervention (p 0.01 (U de Mann-Whitney); Cohen d = 1.00); furthermore, differences were found in the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) (U = -2.67; p = 0.008; Cohen d = 0.50) and in the Short Zarit Burden Interview (Short ZBI) (t = -4.10; p 0.01; Cohen d = 0.98).The results obtained suggest that the implementation of this intervention could reduce both the frequency of DB occurrence and the reaction of the caregiver to their appearance. These chemically related critical metals are essential components in a range of applications and products including electronics, steel alloys and superalloys widely required by the European industry. Today, significant amounts of Ta and associated Nb are sourced as conflict minerals from the central African region, not least the DRC (Congo-Kinshasa).A main objective of FRAME WP6 is to do a survey of the European distribution of these metals and their deposits, thus enhancing their exploration interest and potential to help enable ethical and indigenous production for the EU.While WP6 compiles data on Nb-Ta mineralisations from the whole of Europe, the main focus is put on the Swedish part of the Fennoscandian Shield and the Iberian Variscan Massif.The Nb-Ta mineralisations of the Iberian Peninsula belong to the southwestern extension of the European Variscan Belt. From both an economic and a metallogenetic point of view, the most interesting Nb-Ta deposits in Spain are those in which mineralisation occurs as disseminations throughout small leucogranite bodies, as is the case for the deposits Golpejas, El Trasquilón, Fontao, Penouta and in some occurrences of the Morille-Martinamor district. These have been exploited previously for Sn, Ta-Nb, and/or W. Penouta, which is the biggest known Ta-deposit in Spain, was mined intermittently between 1906-1985. The mine has recently started re-processing old tailings. Most Nb-Ta mineralisations in the Fennoscandian Shield are hosted by LCT-type (lithium-cesium-tantalum-enriched) granitic pegmatites that occur mainly in regions featuring abundant Palaeoproterozoic low to low- medium-grade metasedimentary rocks and associated S-type granites. Some of these have been studied during different earlier exploration campaigns. NYF-type (niobium-yttrium-fluorine-enriched) granitic pegmatites occur as individual dykes and fields throughout the Proterozoic bedrock of Sweden. Research in WP6 will focus on a few selected Swedish deposits and occurrences including Järkvissle and Bergby in central Sweden, as well as Stripåsen, Utö and other rare-element pegmatites in the Bergslagen province. Emphasis during the start of the project was to identify key areas and mineralisations within these two regions that can be studied in detail.Based on available information in the databases and archives of the partner surveys, a list of Nb-Ta occurrences and deposits has been produced. Ultimately, at the end of the project, a report on the distribution and systematics of Nb-Ta mineralisations in Europe will also be produced. Prospective regions and their character of mineralisation will be summarized together with the overall European potential, in order to develop recommendations for future exploration. Furthermore, a discussion of conditions of Nb-Ta production in central Africa with the aim to suggest improvement to these issues will be made. The potential of intra-European production of Nb-Ta to decrease the present near-total dependence on imports will also be assessed. As another outcome, an Inspire-compatible pan-European dataset of Nb-Ta mineralisations will be provided to the GeoERA information platform.

In this article, a new force transducer is designed, developed and built for the measurement of braking forces in the wheel rim of a motor vehicle. The parameters of the transducer design are justified using numerical simulation. In order to install it in the vehicle in a simple and interference-free way, the metal base of the caliper rod is used. It is manufactured and installed in a vehicle in order to obtain the signals of the wheel braking torque, in real time, and at different speeds of circulation, carrying out several tests on the track. Subsequently, data are obtained from calculations of the disc brake system itself. The latter provides instantaneous adherence values between the brake pad and the disc.
