Background A comprehensive examination of the sport-specific activities performed around the time of injury is important to hypothesise injury mechanisms, develop prevention strategies, improve management, and inform future investigations. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise the current literature describing the activities performed around the time of injury in football (soccer). Methods A systematic search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and OpenGrey. Studies were included if participants were football players aged > 13 years old and the activities performed at the time of injury were reported together with the total number of injuries. Risk of bias was assessed using an adapted version of checklists developed for prevalence studies. The activities reported by the studies were grouped to account for inconsistent reporting, and the proportion of each injury activity was calculated. Data were not meta-analysed due to high heterogeneity of methods and classification criteria. Results We included 64 studies reporting on 56,740 injuries in total. ACL injures were analysed by 12 studies, ankle/foot and knee injuries were analysed by five studies, thigh injuries were analysed by four studies, hip/groin injuries were analysed by three studies, and hamstring injuries were analysed by two studies. Five studies analysed more than one type of injury and 38 studies did not specify the type of injuries analysed. Running and kicking were the predominant activities leading to thigh and hamstring injuries. Changing direction and kicking were the predominant activities leading to hip and groin injuries and duels were the predominant activities leading to ankle injuries. Duels and pressing seem the predominant activities leading to ACL injuries, while results for other knee and general injuries were inconsistent. Conclusions A qualitative summary of the activities performed at the time of injury has been reported. The results need to be interpreted carefully due to the risk of bias observed in the included studies. If we are to meaningfully progress our knowledge in this area, it is paramount that future research uses consistent methods to record and classify injuries and activities leading up to and performed at the time of injury. Background A comprehensive examination of the sport-specific activities and circumstances being performed at the time of injury is important to hypothesise mechanisms, develop prevention strategies and inform future investigations. Results reported in the literature are inconsistent because inciting activities are reported using different classifications. Hence the aim was to develop a standardised system for the reporting of inciting circumstances. Methods The system was developed using a modified Nominal Group Technique. The initial panel included 12 sports practitioners and researchers from four continents with respectively ≥ 5 years of experience working in professional football and/or conducting injury research. The process consisted of six phases: idea generation, two surveys, one online meeting and two confirmations. For answers to the closed questions, consensus was deemed achieved if ≥ 70% of respondents agreed. Open-ended answers were qualitatively analysed and then introduced in subsequent phases. Results Ten panellists completed the study. The risk of attrition bias was low. The developed system includes a comprehensive range of inciting circumstances across five domains: contact type, ball situation, physical activity, session details, contextual information. The system also distinguishes between a core set (essential reporting) and an optional set. The panel deemed all the domains to be important and easy to use both in football and in research environments. Conclusion A system to classify inciting circumstances in football was developed. Given the extent of reporting inconsistency of inciting circumstances in the available literature, this can be used while further studies evaluate its reliability.

Hox genes and their cofactors are essential developmental genes that specify regional identity in animals, including insects. A particularly interesting feature of Hox genes is their conserved arrangement in clusters in the same order in which they specify identity along the anterior-posterior axis. Among insects, breaks in the cluster have been reported in a few species, but these seem to be the exception rather than the rule. We have annotated the ten Hox genes of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, and determined that there is a split in its Hox cluster between the Deformed and Sex combs reduced genes. This is the first time a break at this position has been observed in an insect Hox cluster. We have also annotated the D. citri orthologs of the Hox cofactor genes homothorax, PKNOX and extradenticle. Interestingly, we found an additional copy of extradenticle in D. citri that appears to be a retrogene. Expression data and sequence conservation suggest that the extradenticle retrogene may have retained the original extradenticle function and allowed the parental extradenticle gene to diverge.

Monitoring of dissolved methane concentrations in groundwater is required to identify impacts from oil and gas development and to understand temporal variability under background conditions. Currently, long-term (i.e., multiyear) monitoring is performed via periodic groundwater sampling; hence, the data are temporally limited and can suffer from degassing losses in-well and at surface for groundwater with high dissolved gas concentrations. The application of total dissolved gas pressure (PTDG) probes for long-term monitoring of methane-rich groundwater was investigated for >2 years in three monitoring wells in a low-permeability bedrock aquifer above the Utica Shale, Canada. The advantage of these probes is that they allow for continual in situ monitoring. A hydraulic packer was installed in each well, below which PTDG and water pressure were measured every 15 or 30 min. The major dissolved gas species composition, required to calculate methane concentrations from PTDG, was determined from groundwater samples collected approximately bimonthly. Methane was the dominant gas in each well (~80–97%), with relatively consistent composition over time, indicating PTDG provided a reasonable proxy for methane concentrations. All three wells had high PTDG (reaching 53.0 m H2O), with PTDG-derived methane concentrations (34–156 mg/L) much higher (3–12 times) and relatively more stable than determined by conventional groundwater analysis. PTDG monitoring also revealed substantial short-term changes during pumping and between sampling events (up to 4 m H2O), possibly associated with background variability. Limitations and technical remedies are discussed. This study demonstrates that PTDG probes can be a valuable tool for monitoring methane-rich groundwater.

Previous studies of the nutrient budgets of lakes in Precambrian Shield regions have generally ignored the role of groundwater as a source or sink (influx or efflux) of nutrients. This paper and its companion (Part 2) address this science gap by probing the role of groundwater in the nutrient balance for a restricted bay of a Precambrian Shield lake that has undergone extensive shoreline development. In Part 1, we introduce a conceptual model of the relevant processes, including the role of groundwater. A cottage study site is described, concentrations of nutrients and septic tracers (artificial sweeteners), water levels and other data are reported. This includes data from samples of the septic wastewater plume in groundwater at the cottage, and samples from the bay. The artificial sweetener data indicate seepage of septic plumes to the bay, but significant attenuation of septic-derived nutrients in the subsurface. These data are used for numerical modeling in Part 2.

The objective of this study was to advance analytical methods for detecting oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) seepage from mining containments and discriminating any such seepage from the natural bitumen background in groundwaters influenced by the Alberta McMurray formation. Improved sampling methods and quantitative analyses of two groups of monoaromatic acids were employed to analyze OSPW and bitumen-affected natural background groundwaters for source discrimination. Both groups of monoaromatic acids showed significant enrichment in OSPW, while ratios of O2/O4 containing heteroatomic ion classes of acid extractable organics (AEOs) did not exhibit diagnostic differences. Evaluating the monoaromatic acids to track a known plume of OSPW-affected groundwater confirmed their diagnostic abilities. A secondary objective was to assess anthropogenically derived artificial sweeteners and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as potential tracers for OSPW. Despite the discovery of acesulfame and PFAS in most OSPW samples, trace levels in groundwaters influenced by general anthropogenic activities preclude them as individual robust tracers. However, their inclusion with the other metrics employed in this study served to augment the tiered, weight of evidence methodology developed. This methodology was then used to confirm earlier findings of OSPW migrations into groundwater reaching the Athabasca River system adjacent to the reclaimed pond at Tar Island Dyke.

Problem statement To define the Oncology Nursing Society Research Agenda for 2019-2022. Design Multimethod, consensus-building approach by members of the Research Agenda Project Team. Data sources Expert opinion, literature review, surveys, interviews, focus groups, town hall, and review of research priorities from other cancer care organizations and funding agencies. Analysis Content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to synthesize research priority themes that emerged. Findings Three priority areas for scientific development were identified. Implications for nursing The Research Agenda can be used to focus oncology nurses' research, scholarship, leadership, and health policy efforts to advance quality cancer care, inform research funding priorities, and align initiatives and resources across the ONS enterprise.

Detailed annotation and comparative analysis were performed on the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, vacuolar-type ATP synthase (V-ATPase) to support the biological understanding and development of novel therapeutics to manage psyllid vectors. D. citri is a hemipteran insect that vectors the causative agent, the bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), of the citrus greening disease, Huanglongbing (HLB). Millions of citrus trees have been destroyed by citrus greening and every grove in Florida has been directly impacted. In eukaryotic organisms, V-ATPase is an abundant heterodimeric enzyme that serves the cell with essential compartment acidification through the active processes that transport protons across the membrane. Manual curation was completed on 15 putative V-ATPase genes in the D. citri genome. Comparative genomic analysis reveals that the D. citri V-ATPase subunits share domains and motifs with other insects, including the V-ATPase-A superfamily domain from the V-ATPase catalytic subunit A, which shares a 92% identity with Acyrthosiphon pisum. Phylogenetic analysis separates D. citri V-ATPase subunits into expected clades with orthologous sequences. Based on the results of annotation and comparative genomic analysis, RNAi therapies targeting D. citri V-ATPase genes, which have been successfully utilized in related hemipterans, are being pursued. Annotation of the D. citri genome is a critical step towards the development of directed-pest management that will lead to the reduced spread of the pathogens causing HLB throughout the citrus industry.

Ubiquitination is an ATP-dependent process that targets proteins for degradation by the proteasome. In this study, we annotated 15 genes from the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri. This psyllid vector has come to prominence in the last decade due to its role in the transmission of the devastating bacterial pathogen, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). Infection of citrus crops by this pathogen causes Huanglongbing (HLB or citrus greening disease) and results in the eventual death of citrus trees. The identification and correct annotation of these genes in D. citri will be useful for functional genomic studies that aid in the development of RNAi-based management strategies aimed at reducing the spread of HLB. Investigating the effects of CLas infection on the expression of ubiquitin-proteasome pathway genes may provide new information regarding the role that these genes play in the acquisition and transmission of CLas by D. citri.

Citrus greening disease is caused by the pathogenCandidatusLiberibacter asiaticus, which is transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid,Diaphorina citri. There is no curative treatment or significant prevention mechanism for this detrimental disease that causes continued economic losses from reduced citrus production. A high quality genome ofD. citriis being manually annotated to provide accurate gene models required to identify novel control targets and increase understanding of this pest. Here, we annotated genes involved in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and trehaloneogenesis in theD. citrigenome, as these are core metabolic pathways and suppression could reduce this pest. Specifically, twenty-five genes were identified and annotated in the glycolysis and gluconeogenesis pathways and seven genes for the trehaloneogenesis pathway. Comparative analysis showed that the glycolysis genes inD. citriare highly conserved compared to orthologs in other insect systems, but copy numbers vary inD. citri.Expression levels of the annotated gene models were analyzed and several enzymes in the glycolysis pathway showed high expression in the thorax. This is consistent with the primary use of glucose by flight muscles located in the thorax. A few of the genes annotated inD. citrihave been targeted for gene knockdown as a proof of concept, for RNAi therapeutics. Thus, manual annotation of these core metabolic pathways provides accurate genomic foundations for developing gene-targeting therapeutics to reduceD. citri.

The circadian rhythm is a process involving multiple genes that generates an internal molecular clock, allowing organisms to anticipate environmental conditions produced by the earth’s rotation on its axis. This report presents the results of the manual curation of twenty-seven genes likely associated with circadian rhythm in the genome of Diaphorina citri, the Asian citrus psyllid. This insect acts as the vector of the bacterial pathogen Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), the causal agent of citrus greening disease (Huanglongbing). This disease is the most severe detriment to citrus industries and has drastically decreased crop yields worldwide. Based on the genes identified in the psyllid genome, namely cry1 and cry2, D. citri likely possesses a circadian model similar to that of the lepidopteran butterfly, Danaus plexippus. Manual annotation of these genes will allow future molecular therapeutics to be developed that can disrupt the psyllid biology.

Background The lower Dipteran fungus fly, Sciara coprophila, has many unique biological features that challenge the rule of genome DNA constancy. For example, Sciara undergoes paternal chromosome elimination and maternal X chromosome nondisjunction during spermatogenesis, paternal X elimination during embryogenesis, intrachromosomal DNA amplification of DNA puff loci during larval development, and germline-limited chromosome elimination from all somatic cells. Paternal chromosome elimination in Sciara was the first observation of imprinting, though the mechanism remains a mystery. Here, we present the first draft genome sequence for Sciara coprophila to take a large step forward in addressing these features. Results We assembled the Sciara genome using PacBio, Nanopore, and Illumina sequencing. To find an optimal assembly using these datasets, we generated 44 short-read and 50 long-read assemblies. We ranked assemblies using 27 metrics assessing contiguity, gene content, and dataset concordance. The highest-ranking assemblies were scaffolded using BioNano optical maps. RNA-seq datasets from multiple life stages and both sexes facilitated genome annotation. A set of 66 metrics was used to select the first draft assembly for Sciara. Nearly half of the Sciara genome sequence was anchored into chromosomes, and all scaffolds were classified as X-linked or autosomal by coverage. Conclusions We determined that X-linked genes in Sciara males undergo dosage compensation. An entire bacterial genome from the Rickettsia genus, a group known to be endosymbionts in insects, was co-assembled with the Sciara genome, opening the possibility that Rickettsia may function in sex determination in Sciara. Finally, the signal level of the PacBio and Nanopore data support the presence of cytosine and adenine modifications in the Sciara genome, consistent with a possible role in imprinting.

Rotavirus C (RVC) is associated with acute diarrhoea in both children and young animals. Because of its frequent occurrence, additional sequences have recently been generated. In this study, we sequenced 21 complete genomes from porcine diarrhoea samples and analysed them together with all available reference sequences collected from the GenBank database [National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)]. Based on phylogenetic analysis and genetic distance calculation, the number of each segment was identified as 31G, 26P, 13I, 5R, 5C, 5M, 12A, 10 N, 9T, 8E and 4 H for genotypes encoding VP7, VP4, VP6, VP1, VP2, VP3 and NSP1, NSP2, NSP3, NSP4 and NSP5, respectively. From the analysis, genotypes G19–G31, P[22]–P[26], R5, A9–A12, N9–N10, T7–T9 and E6–E8 were defined as newly identified genotypes, and genotype C6 was combined with C5, and M6 was combined with M1, due to their closely related nature. Estimated with the identity frequency ratio between the intergenotype and intragenotype, the nucleotide identity cutoff values for different genotypes were determined as 85, 85, 86, 84, 83, 84, 82, 87, 84, 81 and 79 % for VP7, VP4, VP6, VP1, VP2, VP3, NSP1, NSP2, NSP3, NSP4 and NSP5, respectively. Genotyping of the 49 US strains indicated possible segment reassortment in 9 of the 11 segments, with the exceptions being VP1 and NSP5, and the most prevalent genotypes for each segment genes in the USA were G6/G5/G21/G9-P5/P4-I6/I5-R1-C5-M1-A8-N1/N10-T1-E1-H1. Our study updated the genotypes of RVC strains and provided more evidence of RVC strain diversity that may be relevant to better understand genetic diversity, and the distribution and evolution of RVC strains.

Purpose Return-to-play (RTP) is an on-going challenge in professional football. Return-to-play related research is increasing. However, it is unknown to what extent the recommendations presented within research are being implemented by professional football teams, and where there are gaps between research and practice. The purposes of this study were (1) to determine if premier-league football teams worldwide follow a RTP continuum, (2) to identify RTP criteria used and (3) to understand how RTP decision-making occurs in applied practice. Methods We sent a structured online survey to practitioners responsible for the RTP programme in 310 professional teams from 34 premier-leagues worldwide. The survey comprised four sections, based on hamstring muscle injury: (1) criteria used throughout RTP phases, (2) the frequency with which progression criteria were achieved, (3) RTP decision-making process and (4) challenges to decision-making. Results One-hundred and thirty-one teams responded with a completed survey (42%). One-hundred and twenty-four teams (95%) used a continuum to guide RTP, assessing a combination of clinical, functional and psychological criteria to inform decisions to progress. One-hundred and five (80%) teams reported using a shared decision-making approach considering the input of multiple stakeholders. Team hierarchy, match- and player-related factors were common challenges perceived to influence decision-making. Conclusions General research recommendations for RTP and the beliefs and practices of practitioners appear to match with, the majority of teams assessing functional, clinical and psychological criteria throughout a RTP continuum to inform decision-making which is also shared among key stakeholders. However, specific criteria, metrics and thresholds used, and the specific involvement, dynamics and interactions of staff during decision-making are not clear.

Background: Implementing tobacco cessation has been challenging across multi-racial and multi-ethnic regional communities. Multilayered influences of Societal Determinants of Health (SDH), social risks, environment, role of stress and perceived levels, tobacco addiction and behaviors are complex. Effective identification of social risk factors and unmet social needs of individuals can enhance tobacco treatment quality, and care coordination across the healthcare continuum. Integrating SDH and Implementation science into electronic health record (EHR) can provide both value and principles that promises to enhance patient and community responsiveness to address Catchment Area cancer burden and health disparities. Methods: We included a 33 item SDH measure to our tobacco use assessment (TUA) instrument and applied implementation science with tobacco cessation program at City of Hope (COH). Our SDH assesses patients’ appraisal of their contextual distress including access to primary and cancer related medical care, technology and digital access and proficiency, food insecurity, career/job, income, education distress; housing, living situation and social network/isolation and racism and discrimination stress. The measure follows a 5pt likert scale ranging from extreme stress to no stress. Results: This study compared 173 self-reported TUA. The mean age of first smoked a cigarette was 16 y.o. The mean age of first began smoking cigarettes regularly was 18 y.o. The mean total years of smoking was 36 years. Most participants were everyday smokers and on average, participants smoked I pack/day. >50% of the patients lived in a place where other people smoked cigarettes indoors. 55% of the patients tried to quit in the past 30 days. 60% of the patients indicated that it is EXTREMELY important for them to quit smoking/tobacco and indicated interest in tobacco cessation. Half of the patients indicated they are NOT SO confident in their ability to quit smoking/tobacco. Below are the items commonly endorsed as extreme stressful: Health and cancer outcomes, using telehealth (e.g., using a smartphone or tablet for tele/virtual clinical visits, patient portal, completing online forms, virtual classes), money or finances, and functional strain (e.g., family demands). Conclusions: SDH is complex and multilayered as well as understudied. The results support the small body of research documenting the necessity and utility of measuring and addressing SDH to correct health disparities. Increased prioritization including assessing and intervening with strategic planning and IT integration is required to better understand and address the cancer impact including tobacco cessation relevant to SDH. Successful tobacco control programs can benefit from IT integrated, culturally and community informed SDH assessments using implementation science principles. Citation Format: Kimlin T. Long-term suppression of recombination ultimately leads to gene loss, as demonstrated by the depauperate Y and W chromosomes of long-established pairs of XY and ZW chromosomes. The young social supergene of the Solenopsis invicta red fire ant provides a powerful system to examine the effects of suppressed recombination over a shorter timescale. The two variants of this supergene are carried by a pair of heteromorphic chromosomes, referred to as the social B and social b (SB and Sb) chromosomes. The Sb variant of this supergene changes colony social organization and has an inheritance pattern similar to a Y or W chromosome because it is unable to recombine. We used high-resolution optical mapping, k-mer distribution analysis, and quantification of repetitive elements on haploid ants carrying alternate variants of this young supergene region. We find that instead of shrinking, the Sb variant of the supergene has increased in length by more than 30%. Surprisingly, only a portion of this length increase is due to consistent increases in the frequency of particular classes of repetitive elements. Instead, haplotypes of this supergene variant differ dramatically in the amounts of other repetitive elements, indicating that the accumulation of repetitive elements is a heterogeneous and dynamic process. This is the first comprehensive demonstration of degenerative expansion in an animal and shows that it occurs through nonlinear processes during the early evolution of a region of suppressed recombination.

Recently, students and faculty have been forced to deal with unprecedented disruptions to their courses and broader uncertainties that have presented serious challenges to quality instruction. We present a flexible, team-based approach to teaching and learning that can transition seamlessly between face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online instruction when disruptions occur. We have built a community genome annotation program that can be implemented as a module in a biology course, as an entire course, or as directed research projects. This approach maintains an engaging and supportive educational environment and provides students the opportunity to learn and contribute to science with undergraduate research. Students are provided guidance through multiple interactions with faculty and peer mentors to support their progress and encourage learning. Integration of the developed instructional tools with available technology ensures that students can contribute remotely. Through this process, students seamlessly continue their annotation coursework, participate in undergraduate research, and prepare abstracts and posters for virtual conferences. Importantly, this strategy does not impose any additional burden or workload on students, who may already be overwhelmed with the additional work associated with the transition to remote learning. Here, we present tips for implementing this instructional platform, provide an overview of tools that facilitate instruction, and discuss expected educational outcomes.

Motion capture systems are used in the analysis and interpretation of athlete movement patterns for a variety of reasons, but data integrity remains critical regardless. The extent to which marker location or constraining degrees of freedom (DOF) in the biomechanical model impacts on this integrity lacks consensus. Ten elite academy footballers performed bilateral overhead squats using a marker-based motion capture system. Kinematic data were calculated using four different marker sets with 3DOF and 6DOF configurations for the three joint rotations of the right knee. Root mean squared error differences between marker sets ranged in the sagittal plane between 1.02 and 4.19 degrees to larger values in the frontal (1.30-6.39 degrees) and transverse planes (1.33 and 7.97 degrees). The cross-correlation function of the knee kinematic time series for all eight marker-sets ranged from excellent for sagittal plane motion (>0.99) but reduced for both coronal and transverse planes (
