Excessive heat is a major and growing risk for urban residents. Urban trees can significantly reduce summer peak temperatures, thus reducing heat-related mortality, morbidity, as well as cooling energy demand. However, urban tree canopy is inequitably distributed in US cities, which has been shown to contribute to higher summer temperatures in people-of-color (POC) neighborhoods. Here, we utilize a unique dataset of high-resolution tree canopy cover to estimate the inequality in summertime heat-related mortality, morbidity, and electricity consumption across a sample of 5,723 US municipalities and other places, housing 180 million people during the 2020 census (50.6% in majority non-Hispanic white neighborhoods, 49.4% in majority people-of-color, POC, neighborhoods). We also model the potential to increase tree cover in these municipalities in 5% increments up to a realistic maximum, the 90th percentile of tree cover observed in each municipality for each impervious surface class. On average, trees in non-Hispanic white neighborhoods cool the air by 0.19 ± 0.05⁰C more than in POC neighborhoods, leading annually to trees in white neighborhoods helping prevent 190 ± 139 more deaths, 30,131 ± 10,406 more doctors’ visits, and 1.4 ± 0.5 terawatt-hours (TWhr) more electricity consumption than in POC neighborhoods. The greatest inequality in the protective value of trees occurs in the Northeastern US. We estimate that for these 5,723 municipalities, the maximal feasible urban reforestation program in residential neighborhoods could add 1.2 billion trees, reducing population-weighted average summer temperatures by an additional 0.38 ± 0.01⁰C. Relative to the current status quo, this increase in the cooling benefits of trees would reduce annual heat-related mortality by an additional 464 ± 89 people, annual heat-related morbidity by 80,785 ± 6110 cases, and annual electricity consumption by 4.3 ± 0.2 TWhr, while increasing annual carbon sequestration in trees by 23.7 ± 1.2 MtCO2e and decreasing annual electricity-related GHG emissions by 2.1 ± 0.2 MtCO2e. The total economic value of these benefits, including the value of carbon sequestration and avoided emissions, would be USD 9.6 ± 0.5 billion, although in many neighborhoods the cost of increased tree cover exceeds these benefits. The exception is neighborhoods that currently have lower tree cover, especially those that are majority POC, as these neighborhoods have a much higher return-on-investment from tree planting.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been an invaluable yet limited resource when it comes to protecting healthcare workers against infection during the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In the US, N95 respirator supply chains are severely strained and conservation strategies are needed. A multidisciplinary team at the Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes Jewish Hospital, and BJC Healthcare was formed to implement a program to disinfect N95 respirators. The process described extends the life of N95 respirators using vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) disinfection and allows healthcare workers to retain their own N95 respirator across a large metropolitan healthcare system.

The information published annually by the National Science Foundation on its Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awardees was used to create an Awardees in Ocean Sciences (AOS) data set. This data set shows that women have been successful in receiving the fellowship award in the ocean sciences, receiving an overall 69% of the awards from 1996 through 2021 (458 women among 659 awardees). Women comprised at least 50% of awardees in the six ocean sciences disciplines listed as GRFP subfields of study. The highest percentages of awards to women (72%) were in biological oceanography and marine geology/geophysics, followed by marine biology and chemical oceanography (69%), physical oceanography (67%), and ocean engineering (61%). Women were successful both as undergraduate applicants (69% of undergraduate awardees) and as graduate applicants (71% of graduate awardees). We estimate that GRFP women awardees made up 17.8% of the women obtaining doctoral degrees in oceanography from 2017 to 2021, compared with GRFP men awardees comprising 8.5% of the male doctoral recipients for the same period. Our analysis suggests future directions for study of GRFP awardees and highlights the need for data that would help inform community outreach to underserved student populations.

Background Early exposure to alcohol in adolescence is associated with a range of long term harms. Better understanding of trajectories of alcohol use from adolescence to early adulthood would help target prevention strategies to high risk groups. Methods Christchurch (New Zealand) general population birth cohort (n = 1265). A latent trajectory model of drinking behaviour at age 14–16 was used to predict drinking outcomes at age 18–35, net of covariate factors known to be associated with substance use outcomes in this cohort. Results Three classes of adolescent alcohol use were identified. These were: occasional drinkers, emergent binge drinkers and increasing heavy drinkers. Conclusions This analysis identifies three groups of adolescent alcohol users with differing patterns of use. Emergent binge drinkers likely require public policy responses to alcohol use whereas increasing heavy drinkers are potentially able to be identified individually on the basis of patterns of alcohol use and social variables. This group may benefit from psychosocial interventions and are unlikely to respond to a broad public health approach.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are known to be at increased risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2, although whether these risks are equal across all roles is uncertain. Here we report a retrospective analysis of a large real-world dataset obtained from 10 March to 6 July 2020 in an NHS Foundation Trust in England with 17,126 employees. 3,338 HCWs underwent symptomatic PCR testing (14.4% positive, 2.8% of all staff) and 11,103 HCWs underwent serological testing for SARS-CoV-2 IgG (8.4% positive, 5.5% of all staff). Seropositivity was lower than other hospital settings in England but higher than community estimates. Increased test positivity rates were observed in HCWs from BAME backgrounds and residents in areas of higher social deprivation. A multiple logistic regression model adjusting for ethnicity and social deprivation confirmed statistically significant increases in the odds of testing positive in certain occupational groups, most notably domestic services staff, nurses, and health-care assistants. PCR testing of symptomatic HCWs appeared to underestimate overall infection levels, probably due to asymptomatic seroconversion. Clinical outcomes were reassuring, with only a small minority of HCWs with COVID-19 requiring hospitalization (2.3%) or ICU management (0.7%) and with no deaths. Despite a relatively low level of HCW infection compared to other UK cohorts, there were nevertheless important differences in test positivity rates between occupational groups, robust to adjustment for demographic factors such as ethnic background and social deprivation. Quantitative and qualitative studies are needed to better understand the factors contributing to this risk. Robust informatics solutions for HCW exposure data are essential to inform occupational monitoring.

Purpose Parenting is a modifiable factor affecting the development of alcohol use disorder (AUD); however, the persistence of this effect into adulthood remains poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the longitudinal relationship between positive parenting and AUD in adulthood. Methods Data were gathered from the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS), a birth cohort of 1,265 children born in Christchurch (New Zealand) in mid-1977. Positive parenting was quantified to age 16, and included the extent to which cohort members self-reported: high scores on measures of maternal and paternal care; low scores on a measure of maternal and paternal overprotection; high scores on a measure of parental attachment; low scores on a measure of parental intimate partner violence; and occasional or no use of physical punishment. Outcome measures were AUD incidence and symptoms at ages 15–35, with potential confounding factors and time-dynamic covariates included. Results There was a significant association between positive parenting and AUD outcomes, with higher levels of positive parenting associated with a lower incidence of AUD and AUD symptoms. Controlling for confounding factors reduced the association between positive parenting and AUD outcomes, but they remained statistically significant. Adjustment for mental health, life stress, and employment reduced the magnitude of the association between positive parenting and alcohol outcomes to statistical nonsignificance. Conclusions Parenting factors in childhood and adolescence are linked to AUD outcomes in adulthood, as well as mental health, substance use, and life stress. Investment in positive parenting in adolescence may reduce AUD and associated harms in adulthood.

International public policy on age of first alcoholic drink (AFD) has emphasised the long-term benefits of delaying AFD. This study aimed to compare AFD to age of first intoxication (AFI) as predictors of substance use disorder and mental disorder outcomes in adulthood.Data were obtained from a longitudinal birth cohort in Christchurch, New Zealand. Participants were born in 1977. Analysis samples ranged from n = 1025 (age 18) to n = 962 (age 35). Measures of AFD and AFI were generated using parental- and self-report data collected from age 11. Outcomes at age 18-35 were alcohol quantity consumed, DSM-IV alcohol use disorder (AUD) and AUD symptoms, major depression, anxiety disorder, and nicotine, cannabis, and other illicit drug dependence. Covariate factors measured during childhood included family socioeconomic status, family functioning, parental alcohol-related attitudes/behaviours, and individual factors.There was a significant unadjusted association between AFD and symptoms of AUD (p .001) and nicotine dependence (p .05) but not other outcomes. AFI was significantly (p .05) associated with all outcomes. After adjustment for covariates, the association between AFD and outcomes was not statistically significant. Conversely, in adjusted models, statistically significant (p .05) associations remained between AFI and all AUD and substance use disorder outcomes but not alcohol consumption or mental disorder outcomes.AFI was a more robust predictor of adult substance use disorder outcomes than AFD. Public health and policy interventions aimed at prevention of long term harms from alcohol should therefore focus on AFI rather than AFD.

This study exposed a major author studies class to both a reading community modeled after those popular in Charles Dickens’s own time and a digital reading community. Students gravitated toward the more traditional oral reading community over the digital project, indicating an unexpected interest in older forms of communication.

This case study examines one high school student, a young woman from the U.S., who was diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses and who, during the research, began to identify as a lesbian. Using a framework grounded in Vygotsky's defectological writing, the authors analyze the case in light of the focal participant's engagement with the international online anime art community, which provided her with a positive social updraft through which she entered a cultural stream that enabled her to represent and reflect on her emerging identity through conventions that were not available to her in mainstream culture. Relying on artifacts from digital art production and a series of interviews, the study examines the manner in which the focal participant employed the signs, tools, goals, values, and overall setting and contours of the anime culture to develop a positive sense of self, a goal difficult for her to achieve in mainstream society. The study concludes with a discussion of how Vygotsky's work in defectology has salience for 21st century mental health differences — characterized here as extranormative or neuroatypical — because of his emphasis on viewing the settings of human development, rather than individual points of difference, as the focus of intervention.

In the United States, several regulations and federal policies govern the use of potentially biohazardous materials in research and industry. Part of this oversight is assigned by mandate to Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs). However, most research entities give additional responsibilities to their IBC to take advantage of a standing body with significant expertise in review and oversight of biohazardous research. Two case studies are provided to highlight functions of the IBC which are not mandated, yet are critical for safe and responsible research. There are also types of biohazardous work that are currently unregulated and receive no review from an IBC or other group of subject matter experts, leaving a gap in safety oversight. To mitigate the hazard of working with potentially hazardous unregulated biological material, the necessity of performing a risk assessment and of performing a hazard review by subject matter experts, such as those on an IBC, is of paramount importance.

In this chapter we present a case study of a young woman, Chloe,1 whose disruptive conduct at home led to a set of related diagnoses for chronic depression and anxiety, Asperger’s syndrome, Tourette’s syndrome, oppositional-defiance, and obsessive-compulsiveness, each presented to her and her family as a set of disabilities and disorders. Considered to be an outsider to the mainstream youth of her social surroundings due to the different orientation to the world that these conditions afforded her, she found an affirmational social setting through her engagement with the online anime community. When online with virtual, and eventually material friends she met through this medium, she was no longer constructed as odd and ill-fitting. Rather, her differences were understood by her peers as strengths, and she was recognized as a key contributor to the artistic and narrative worlds available online. This high degree of support provided Chloe with the positive social updraft that was largely unavailable to her in her daily life in school and at home.

Here we define an important role for heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) in the cellular response to genotoxic agents. We demonstrate for the first time that HSF1 can complex with nuclear p53 and that both proteins are co-operatively recruited to p53-responsive genes such as p21. Analysis of natural and synthetic cis elements demonstrates that HSF1 can enhance p53-mediated transcription, whilst depletion of HSF1 reduces the expression of p53-responsive transcripts. We find that HSF1 is required for optimal p21 expression and p53-mediated cell-cycle arrest in response to genotoxins while loss of HSF1 attenuates apoptosis in response to these agents. To explain these novel properties of HSF1 we show that HSF1 can complex with DNA damage kinases ATR and Chk1 to effect p53 phosphorylation in response to DNA damage. Our data reveal HSF1 as a key transcriptional regulator in response to genotoxic compounds widely used in the clinical setting, and suggest that HSF1 will contribute to the efficacy of these agents.

Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa is a nuclear acetyltransferase that both coactivates and corepresses transcription factors and has a definitive function in the DNA damage response. Here, we provide evidence that Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa is phosphorylated by protein kinase C epsilon. In vitro, protein kinase C epsilon phosphorylates Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa on at least two sites within the acetyltransferase domain. In whole cells, activation of protein kinase C increases the levels of phosphorylated Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa and the interaction of Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa with protein kinase C epsilon. A phosphomimetic mutant Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa has distinct subcellular localisation compared to the wild-type protein in whole cells. Taken together, these findings suggest that the protein kinase C epsilon phosphorylation sites on Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa are important for its subcellular localisation. Regulation of the subcellular localisation of Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa via phosphorylation provides a novel means of controlling Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa function.

BACKGROUND Small molecule MDM2 antagonists including nutlin-3 have been shown to be effective against a range of cancer cell types and nutlin-3 can inhibit growth of LNCaP xenografts. We compared the efficacy of nutlin-3 in three prostate cancer cell types and provide an insight into the mechanism of nutlin-3. METHODS Nutlin-3 efficacy was measured using proliferation assays, cell cycle analysis, apoptosis assays, quantitative RT-PCR, and immunoblotting. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays were also performed. RESULTS Nutlin-3 can specifically inhibit proliferation of LNCaP cells through cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. This coincides with increased levels of the p53-responsive transcripts p21, PUMA, gadd45, and Mdm2 and recruitment of p53 to chromatin. Nutlin-3 also reduces androgen receptor levels, resulting in altered receptor recruitment to chromatin. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that small molecule MDM2 antagonists might be useful in the treatment of human prostate cancers that retain functional p53 and androgen receptor signaling. AimThe purpose of this study is to evaluate an educational programme, ‘Diabetes Connect: Connecting Professions’, which was developed to enhance communication across primary care networks, to support best practice in clinical interventions and progress multidisciplinary team work to benefit patients in diabetes care.MethodsA total of 26 workshops were successfully delivered for 309 primary care professionals across the state of Queensland in Australia from November 2011. It consists of two separate, but complementary training elements: a series of online clinical education training modules and state-wide interprofessional learning workshops developed to enhance professional competencies. The evaluation design included completion of online surveys by the participants at two time points: first upon registering for the online modules or workshops; second, one week after attending a workshop. The survey included questions to evaluate the change in role performance measures.FindingsOverall, significant increases in participants’ current knowledge, perceived ability to adopt this knowledge at work and willingness to change professional behaviour in the short term were observed.ConclusionThe study suggests that for maximum benefit both, workshop and online training, should be combined and made available widely. Future programmes should use a randomised trial design to test the delivery model.

n this article, we present a case study of a student composing a significant text in a high school class. We focus on his inscription and representation of meaning in the textual codes and the ways in which those codes were interpreted by his readership, particularly his teacher. The text was an architectural drawing of a house that the student, Rick (all names are pseudonyms), designed to suit the life he imagined himself living. It embodied a particular meaning for him and a vision of how it would function in service of his conception of a good life. Critical aspects of that inscription were apparent to his teacher, Bill, following much discussion with Rick. Yet Bill read key aspects of Rick’s design as violations of common-sense rules for designing homes for the suburban housing market and consequently resisted, although ultimately accepted, Rick’s design as a viable text. The tension between Rick’s inscription of narrative meaning in his text and the meaning anticipated and read by his teacher—a tension that existed not only between student and teacher but also between the broader cultures in which each participated—served as the I

Tip60 is a histone acetyltransferase (HAT) implicated in a wide range of cellular functions, including mRNA synthesis and DNA repair. In the present report we propose a model based on which Tip60 is actively involved in ribosomal gene transcription through acetylation of UBF, a ribosomal specific transcription factor, as well as through its direct recruitment to the human ribosomal gene promoter, as shown by chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments. Electron microscopy studies revealed that Tip60 resides in sites of active rDNA transcription within the nucleolus, while it co-localizes with UBF as shown by confocal microscopy. In addition, in vivo transcription assays demonstrated that the nucleolar fraction of Tip60 localizes to sites of newly synthesized rRNA. Finally, functional assays established that Tip60 complexes with, and targets UBF for acetylation. The present study underlines the importance of acetylation in rDNA transcription and directly implicates Tip60 in the process of ribosomal gene transcription.

Objectives: To examine the effect of androgen treatment upon histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) localisation and, thus, enzymatic function in androgen sensitive prostate cancer (CaP) models. To study HDAC4 expression in benign prostatic hyperplasia, primary and hormone refractory (HR) CaP and to investigate the involvement of histone deacetylase activity in the development of the androgen insensitive phenotype. Methods: Immunohistochemical staining of prostate sections of both benign tissue and primary and hormone relapsed prostate cancer, as well as of the CWR22 mouse xenograft model, and indirect quantitative immunofluorescence staining of endogenous HDAC4 in LNCaP cells. Results: HDAC4 is recruited to the nuclei of HR cancer cells, where it may exert an inhibitory effect on differentiation and contribute to the development of the aggressive phenotype of late stage CaP. The above may result from the loss of androgen responsiveness characterising HR CaP, since HDAC4 nuclear localisation is regulated by androgens in androgen responsive systems (i.e. LNCaP, CWR22) reflecting earlier phase disease. Conclusions: HDAC4 may contribute to the development of HR CaP and, therefore, constitute a potential therapeutic target, particularly in the most lethal phase of androgen independence.

This article analyzes how Sharon, a student teacher, negotiated the different conceptions of teaching that provided the expectations for good instruction in her university and the site of her student teaching and how her effort to reconcile the different belief systems affected her identity as a teacher. The key settings of Sharon’s experience were the university program, her third-grade class at Harding Elementary, and her first teaching job. During student teaching, Sharon experienced frustrating tensions because her cooperating teacher provided little room for experimentation, mentoring instead with a mimetic approach. When in her first job, Sharon had the opportunity to resolve instructional problems with greater authority. We see tensions that require a socially contextualized intellectual resolution rather than simply one of relational accommodation as potentially productive in creating environments conductive to the formation of a satisfying teaching identity.

Structural conversion of the serotype A recombinant botulinum neurotoxin heavy chain fragment (rBoNTA(Hc)) produced intracellularly in Pichia pastoris yeast was observed and characterized during purification development efforts. A pH screening study captured the transformation stages of the original recovered species into its derived counterpart and a number of analytical tools such as peptide mapping by LC/MS confirmed the formation of a disulfide bond, especially in samples of neutral to basic pH. A cation exchange chromatographic method proved useful in following the incidence of the reaction in various rBoNTA(Hc) samples. The disulfide formation kinetics were characterized using a one-quarter quadratic factorial design, following the investigation and development of controlled oxidation conditions using cysteine and cystamine as the redox pair. Temperature, pH and concentration of the redox pair had a significant effect on the yield and rate of the disulfide formation. This controlled reaction was eventually introduced as a functional unit operation in the purification process. The summation of preliminary scale-up and potency data showed scalability and robustness in the production of an active disulfide-bonded form of a recombinant botulism vaccine candidate. The presence of the disulfide bond did not effect the vaccine potency and it enhanced the molecule's thermal stability.

Teacher education is often viewed as too theoretical and not sufficiently concerned with the realities of classroom practice. From this perspective theory and practice are cast as distinct realms whose only connection comes when theory influences practice. We argue that the theory-practice dichotomy lacks the richness of Vygotsky's notion of concepts, in which abstract principles are interwoven with worldly experience. More specifically, Vygotsky distinguishes two types of concepts, spontaneous concepts and scientific concepts. Spontaneous concepts are learned through cultural practice and, because they are tied to learning in specific contexts, allow for limited generalization to new situations; scientific concepts are learned through formal instruction and, because they are grounded in general principles, can more readily be applied to new situations. Vygotsky argues that while spontaneous concepts may be developed without formal instruction, scientific concepts require interplay with spontaneous concepts; hence the problematic nature of the theory-practice dichotomy. He further identifies two types of generalization that approximate concepts yet do not achieve their theoretical unity: complexes, in which some members of the set may be unified with others but all are not unified according to the same principle; and pseudoconcepts, in which members of the set appear unified but include internal inconsistencies. We argue that teacher educators should strive to teach concepts, though the overall structure of teacher education programs makes it more likely that their students will learn complexes or pseudoconcepts. We illustrate these problems with examples from case studies of teachers making the transition from their teacher education programs to their first jobs.

A cell permeabilization method for the release of intracellular proteins from microbial cells was developed. The method was applied to the recovery of recombinant botulinum neurotoxin fragments, expressed intracellularly in the yeast Pichia pastoris, by suspending the cells in an aqueous solution containing N,N-dimethyltetradecylamine. For the botulinum neurotoxin serotype B C-terminal heavy chain fragment, 1.8 mg g(-1) biomass were recovered. For the botulinum neurotoxin serotype A C-terminal heavy chain fragment, 3.7 mg g(-1) biomass were recovered. The concentration of recombinant protein in the cell extracts remained stable for up to 48 and 24 h for the serotype B and serotype A fragments, respectively. The permeabilization method was compared with high-pressure homogenization; the permeabilization method proved to be both more selective and more efficient.

The nuclear hormone receptor superfamily is composed of a group of hormone-dependent transcription factors that play prominent roles in homeostatic events in vertebrates. A prerequisite for steroid hormone receptor activity is the binding of co-activator molecules to the activation function-2 domain of the receptor. The LXXLL motif/nuclear receptor box, contained within a number of co-activator molecules, mediates the interaction with nuclear hormone receptors. Tip60 (Tat-interactive protein 60 kDa), previously shown to bind to and enhance androgen receptor (AR)-mediated transactivation, contains a single nuclear receptor box at its extreme C terminus. We demonstrate that unlike members of the p160 co-activator family that interact predominantly with the N terminus of the AR in an LXXLL motif-independent manner, the LXXLL motif of Tip60 is required and is sufficient for AR interaction. Furthermore, by using the mammalian two-hybrid system and transient transfection experiments, we show that Tip60 preferentially interacts with and up-regulates class I nuclear receptors, suggesting that Tip60 is a steroid hormone receptor-specific co-activator. We conclude that Tip60 may specifically regulate a subset of nuclear hormone receptors, giving an indication to how regulated nuclear receptor activation can be achieved.

Two experiments tested memory for a once-heard voice. Experiment 1 showed that hearing an unknown voice utter the same sentence three times improved recognition of the voice a week later compared with hearing only a single utterance of the sentence, but instructions to attend to the voice did not. The impairment caused by seeing the speaker's face during the original utterance (the Face Overshadowing Effect--FOE) occurred only with the single utterance and was unaffected by instructions. It was concluded that length of utterance without increase in speech variety aids voice recognition, and that the FOE is not due to voluntary attention to face rather than voice, but may be due to involuntary attention to the initial exposure of the face. Experiment 2 investigated whether exposure to the face before the onset of speech reduced the FOE. Such an effect was observed and it was concluded that the FOE is due to involuntary preference for processing face information in order to aid later recognition of the individual, while speech is processed primarily for meaning. Absence of an FOE on memory for the words uttered was consistent with this interpretation.

Results were combined from 5 experiments by Cook in 1998 with 728 participants who listened to one male voice and one female voice each saying a sentence, then attempted to recognise the voices from line-ups of six voices presented a week later. While 352 male listeners did not differ significantly in recognising female and male voices (38% correct vs 41%), 376 female listeners were significantly more likely to recognise female than male voices (51% vs 43% correct). There was no evidence for individual differences in voice recognition in that listeners who recognised the male voice were no more likely to recognise the female voice than those who failed to recognise the male voice.

Four experiments consider some of the circumstances under which children follow two different rule pairs when sorting cards. Previous research has repeatedly found that 3-year-olds encounter substantial difficulties implementing the second of two conflicting rule sets, despite their knowledge of these rules. One interpretation of this phenomenon [Cognitive Complexity and Control (CCC) theory] is that 3-year-olds have problems establishing an appropriate hierarchical ordering for rules. The present data suggest an alternative account of children's card sorting behaviour, according to which the cognitive salience of test card features may be more important than inflexibility with respect to rule representation.

Two studies explored individual differences in general memory ability and their relation to performance in a public examination taken at age 15‐16 years in England and Wales. Five memory tasks were used to test both immediate memory and retention a week later. Rank orders of performance across the memory tasks, with IQ partialled out, were found to be significantly related, suggesting some general process. Separate indices of general memory ability for the immediate and delayed tests were highly correlated with each other and also with self‐ratings of memory ability. Multiple regression revealed that self‐rating of memory ability was the only significant independent predictor of examination performance. The results suggest that individual differences in memory ability account for between 10 and 20% of the variance in performance in this examination in groups of above‐average IQ. Possible reasons for the importance of memory in this context and implications for instructional methods are discussed.

Two factors relevant to voice recognition were investigated in the study reported here: the effect on memory for a voice of the presence of a face or personal information about the speaker, and the effects of the re-presentation of this information as contextual cues at test. Recognition memory for the briefly heard voice of a stranger was superior in conditions where the face of the speaker was absent. Presence of the additional contextual cues at test had no effects on recognition performance. Theoretical and forensic applications of the findings are discussed in terms of face-recognition models and witness line-up design. The sensitivity of voice memory measures to the different types of experimental design is also considered. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A survey of ergonomics activities and programs in research libraries produced evidence of the degree to which libraries are creating formal organizational structures to address ergonomics. Data were gathered that describe whether libraries are providing ergonomics equipment and accessories, whether libraries are offering ergonomics training sessions, whether ergonomics training and activities are focused on technical services departments, and whether concerns about ergonomics have had an impact on job descriptions or office design. An overview of current awareness and trends is given and some promising ideas for addressing ergonomics issues are identified through a closer look at a few very active programs.

We have examined levels of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha) in neoplastic and non-neoplastic bladder tissue using a standard radioimmunoassay technique. Tumour samples had much higher TGF-alpha levels compared with EGF and TGF-alpha levels in malignant tissue were significantly higher than in benign bladder samples. There was, in addition, a difference in mean EGF levels from 'normal' bladder samples from non-tumour bearing areas of bladder in patients with bladder cancer compared with 'normal' bladder tissue obtained at the time of organ retrieval surgery. Levels of EGF and TGF-alpha did not correlate with levels of EGF receptor (EGFR) as determined by a radioligand binding method but levels of TGF-alpha > 10 ng gm-1 of tumour tissue did correlate with EGFR positivity defined using immunohistochemistry. These data suggest that TGF-alpha is the likely ligand for EGFR in bladder tumours.
