An interesting physical phenomenon was recently observed when a fresh-water basin is covered by a thin ice film that has properties similar to the property of a rubber membrane. Surface waves can be generated under the action of wind on the air–water interface that contains an ice film. The modulation property of hydro-elastic waves (HEWs) in deep water covered by thin ice film blown by the wind with a uniform vertical profile is studied here in terms of the airflow velocity versus wavenumber. The modulation instability of HEWs is studied through the analysis of coefficients of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with the help of the Lighthill criterion. The NLS equation is derived using the multiple scale method in the presence of airflow. It is demonstrated that the potentially unstable hydro-elastic waves with negative energy appear for relatively small wind speeds, whereas the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability arises when the wind speed becomes fairly strong. Estimates of parameters of modulated waves for the typical conditions are given.

Phantoms are specifically designed objects that are utilized or imaged to evaluate, analyze and tune the performance of experimental devices. In this project, it is aimed to design a phantom that responds in a similar manner with how human blood circulation would act in specific flow and pressure tests such as pulse measurement. Ballistic gelatin is a member of hydrogel family with 250 Bloom value which resembles human muscle tissue in terms of mechanical features. That’s why we carried out a uniaxial compression test on our gelatin sample to analyze its similarity of human muscle tissue in terms of elastic modulus, stiffness and rupture strength. Test results indicated that our gelatin sample has approximate values with organic human muscle tissue. Designed model was X-rayed and the similarities of the model to human texture were compared. After producing of lower limb phantoms, we carried out a circulation test through them by the aid of a peristaltic pump to simulate the actual blood circulation of human body limbs. This designed phantom is made ready for available flow and pressure tests.

The modulation instability of surface capillary-gravity water waves is analysed in a shear flow model with a tangential discontinuity of velocity. It is assumed that air blows along the surface of the water with a uniform profile in the vertical direction. Such a model, despite its simplicity, plays an important role in hydrodynamics as the reference model for investigating basic physical phenomena of wave–current interactions and acquiring insights into a series of complex phenomena. In certain cases where the wavelength of interfacial perturbations is much bigger than the width of the shear flow profile, the model with the tangential discontinuity in the velocity is adequate for describing physical phenomena at least within limited spatial and temporal frameworks. A detailed analysis of the air-flow conditions under which modulation instability sets in is presented. It is also shown that the interfacial waves are subject to dissipative or radiative instability when negative-energy waves appear at the interface.

Multi-institutional efforts can facilitate training of deep MRI reconstruction models, albeit privacy risks arise during cross-site sharing of imaging data. Federated learning (FL) has recently been introduced to address privacy concerns by enabling distributed training without transfer of imaging data. Existing FL methods employ conditional reconstruction models to map from undersampled to fully-sampled acquisitions via explicit knowledge of the accelerated imaging operator. Since conditional models generalize poorly across different acceleration rates or sampling densities, imaging operators must be fixed between training and testing, and they are typically matched across sites. To improve patient privacy, performance and flexibility in multi-site collaborations, here we introduce Federated learning of Generative IMage Priors (FedGIMP) for MRI reconstruction. FedGIMP leverages a two-stage approach: cross-site learning of a generative MRI prior, and prior adaptation following injection of the imaging operator. The global MRI prior is learned via an unconditional adversarial model that synthesizes high-quality MR images based on latent variables. A novel mapper subnetwork produces site-specific latents to maintain specificity in the prior. During inference, the prior is first combined with subject-specific imaging operators to enable reconstruction, and it is then adapted to individual cross-sections by minimizing a data-consistency loss. Comprehensive experiments on multi-institutional datasets clearly demonstrate enhanced performance of FedGIMP against both centralized and FL methods based on conditional models.

Objective: Pain assessment in children continues to challenge clinicians and researchers, as subjective experiences of pain require inference through observable behaviors, both involuntary and deliberate. The presented approach supplements the subjective self-report-based method by fusing electrodermal activity (EDA) recordings with video facial expressions to develop an objective pain assessment metric. Such an approach is specifically important for assessing pain in children who are not capable of providing accurate self-pain reports, requiring nonverbal pain assessment. We demonstrate the performance of our approach using data recorded from children in post-operative recovery following laparoscopic appendectomy. We examined separately and combined the usefulness of EDA and video facial expression data as predictors of children's self-reports of pain following surgery through recovery. Findings indicate that EDA and facial expression data independently provide above chance sensitivities and specificities, but their fusion for classifying clinically significant pain vs. clinically nonsignificant pain achieved substantial improvement, yielding 90.91% accuracy, with 100% sensitivity and 81.82% specificity. The multimodal measures capitalize upon different features of the complex pain response. Thus, this paper presents both evidence for the utility of a weighted maximum likelihood algorithm as a novel feature selection method for EDA and video facial expression data and an accurate and objective automated classification algorithm capable ofdiscriminating clinically significant pain from clinically nonsignificant pain in children.
