Search

Recent advances in high-precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions necessitate an understanding of energy shifts of ionic levels caused by external electric and magnetic fields. Beyond the well-known Stark and linear Zeeman shifts, trapped ions may also exhibit quadratic Zeeman and electric quadrupole shifts. In this contribution, we present a systematic approach for the theoretical analysis of these shifts for arbitrary many-electron ions. Based on the derived expressions and making use of the multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock approach, we performed calculations of quadratic Zeeman shift coefficients and quadrupole moments for various ionic states in Ca$^{14+}$, Ni$^{12+}$ and Xe$^{q+}$ ions. By exciting a series of $1\mathrm{s}^{2}\, ^{1}\mathrm{S}_{0} \to 1\mathrm{s}n\mathrm{p}\, ^{1}\mathrm{P}_{1}$ transitions in helium-like nitrogen ions with linearly polarized monochromatic soft X-rays at the Elettra facility, we found a change in the angular distribution of the fluorescence sensitive to the principal quantum number $n$. In particular it is observed that the ratio of emission in directions parallel and perpendicular to the polarization of incident radiation increases with higher $n$. We find this $n$-dependence to be a manifestation of the Hanle effect, which served as a practical tool for lifetime determinations of optical transitions since its discovery in 1924. In contrast to traditional Hanle effect experiments, in which one varies the magnetic field and considers a particular excited state, we demonstrate a 'soft X-ray Hanle effect' which arises in a static magnetic field but for a series of excited states. By comparing experimental data with theoretical predictions, we were able to determine lifetimes ranging from hundreds of femtoseconds to tens of picoseconds of the $1\mathrm{s}n\mathrm{p}\, ^{1}\mathrm{P}_{1}$ levels, which find excellent agreement with atomic-structure calculations. We argue that dedicated soft X-ray measurements could yield lifetime data that is beyond current experimental reach and cannot yet be predicted with sufficient accuracy., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

During recent years interest has been rising for applications of vector light beams towards magnetic field sensing. In particular, a series of experiments were performed to extract information about properties of static magnetic fields from absorption profiles of light passing through an atomic gas target. In the present work, we propose an extension to this method for oscillating magnetic fields. To investigate this scenario, we carried out theoretical analysis based on the time-dependent density matrix theory. We found that absorption profiles, even when averaged over typical observation times, are indeed sensitive to both strength and frequency of the time-dependent field, thus opening the prospect for a powerful diagnostic technique. To illustrate this sensitivity, we performed detailed calculations for the $5s \;\, {}^2S_{1/2}$ ($F=1$) $-$ $5p \;\, {}^2 P_{3/2}$ ($F=0$) transition in rubidium atoms, subject to a superposition of an oscillating (test) and a static (reference) magnetic field., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Coulomb excitation of hydrogen atoms by vortex protons is theoretically investigated within the framework of the non--relativistic first--Born approximation and the density matrix approach. Special attention is paid to the magnetic sublevel population of excited atoms and, consequently, to the angular distribution of the fluorescence radiation. We argue that both these properties are sensitive to the projection of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), carried by the projectile ions. In order to illustrate the OAM--effect, detailed calculations have been performed for the $1s \to 2p$ excitation and the subsequent $2p \to 1s$ radiative decay of a hydrogen target, interacting with incident Laguerre--Gaussian vortex protons. The calculation results suggest that Coulomb excitation can be employed for the diagnostics of vortex ion beam at accelerator and storage ring facilities., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

Many-body perturbation theory is implemented in order to calculate the isotope shifts of $4s$, $4p_{1/2}$, $4p_{3/2}$, $3d_{3/2}$, and $3d_{5/2}$ energy levels of Ca$^+$, for even isotopes $A=$40, 42, 44, 46, 48. The results are presented for mass shift and field shift, as well as for higher-order field shifts, quadratic mass shift, nuclear polarization correction, and the cross term between field and mass shifts. Additionally, we examine King-plot nonlinearities introduced by the higher-order isotope-shift corrections to the combinations of $3d_{3/2}\rightarrow 4s$, $3d_{5/2}\rightarrow 4s$, and $4p_{1/2}\rightarrow 4s$ transitions. Photoexcitation of trapped ions by Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes from guided beam structures is proposed and investigated theoretically. In particular, simple analytical expressions for the Rabi frequencies of induced atomic transitions are derived that depend both on the parameters of HG beams and on the geometry of an experiment. By using these general expressions, we investigate the $^{2}S_{1/2} \to \; ^{2}F_{7/2}$ electric octupole (E3) transition in an Yb$^{+}$ ion, localized in the low--intensity center of the HG$_{10}$ and HG$_{01}$ beams. We show how the corresponding Rabi frequency can be enhanced by properly choosing the polarization of incident light and the orientation of an external magnetic field, which defines the quantization axis of a target ion. The calculations, performed for experimentally feasible beam parameters, indicate that the achieved Rabi frequencies can be comparable or even higher than those observed for the conventional Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes. Since HG-like modes can be relatively straightforwardly generated with high purity and stability from integrated photonics, our results suggest that they may form a novel tool for investigating highly-forbidden atomic transitions., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We theoretically investigate the propagation of light in the presence of a homogeneous gravitational field. To model this, we derive the solutions of the wave equation in Rindler spacetime, which account for gravitational redshift and light deflection. The developed theoretical framework is used to explore the propagation of plane light waves in a horizontal Fabry-Perot cavity. We pay particular attention to the cavity output power. It is shown that this power depends not only on the input frequency, but also on the vertical position of a detector. We state that the height-dependent detector signal arising from the cavity internal light deflection effect (CILD-effect) also opens a new alternative way to frequency stabilization in Earth-based laser experiments and to study gravitational light deflection at laboratory scales., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

$^{229}$Th with a low-lying nuclear isomeric state is an essential candidate for a nuclear clock as well as many other applications. Laser excitation of the isomeric state has been a long-standing goal. With relativistic $^{229}$Th ions in storage rings, high-power lasers with wavelengths in the visible range or longer can be used to achieve high excitation rates of $^{229}$Th isomers. This can be realized through direct resonant excitation, or excitation via an intermediate nuclear or electronic state, facilitated by the tunability of both the laser-beam and ion-bunch parameters. Unique opportunities are offered by highly charged $^{229}$Th ions due to the nuclear-state mixing. The significantly reduced isomeric-state lifetime corresponds to a much higher excitation rate for direct resonant excitation. Importantly, we propose electric dipole transitions changing both the electronic and nuclear states that are opened by the nuclear hyperfine mixing. We suggest using them for efficient isomer excitation in Li-like $^{229}$Th ions, via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage or single-laser excitation. We also propose schemes for probing the isomers, utilizing nuclear radiative decay or laser spectroscopy on electronic transitions, through which the isomeric-state energy can be determined with an orders-of-magnitude higher precision than the current value. Optical atomic clocks are the most accurate measurement devices ever constructed and have found many applications in fundamental science and technology. The use of highly charged ions (HCI) as a new class of references for highest accuracy clocks and precision tests of fundamental physics has long been motivated by their extreme atomic properties and reduced sensitivity to perturbations from external electric and magnetic fields compared to singly charged ions or neutral atoms. Here we present the first realisation of this new class of clocks, based on an optical magnetic-dipole transition in Ar$^{13+}$. Its comprehensively evaluated systematic frequency uncertainty of $2.2\times10^{-17}$ is comparable to that of many optical clocks in operation. From clock comparisons we improve by eight and nine orders of magnitude upon the uncertainties for the absolute transition frequency and isotope shift ($^{40}$Ar vs. $^{36}$Ar), respectively. These measurements allow us to probe the largely unexplored quantum electrodynamic nuclear recoil, presented as part of improved calculations of the isotope shift which reduce the uncertainty of previous theory by a factor of three. We present a theoretical study of photoexcitation of highly charged ions from their ground states, a process which can be realized at the Gamma Factory at CERN. Special attention is paid to the question of how the excitation rates are affected by the mixing of opposite-parity ionic levels, which is induced both by an external electric field and the weak interaction between electrons and the nucleus. In order to reinvestigate this "Stark-plus-weak-interaction" mixing, well-known in neutral atomic systems, we employ relativistic Dirac theory. Based on the developed approach, detailed calculations are performed for the ${\rm 1s}_{1/2} \to {\rm 2s}_{1/2}$ and ${\rm 1s}^2 \; {\rm 2s}_{1/2} \to {\rm 1s}^2 \; {\rm 3s}_{1/2}$ (M1 + parity-violating-E1) transitions in hydrogen- and lithium-like ions, respectively. In particular, we focus on the difference between the excitation rates obtained for the right- and left-circularly polarized incident light. This difference arises due to the parity violating mixing of ionic levels and is usually characterized in terms of the circular-dichroism parameter. We argue that future measurements of circular dichroism, performed with highly charged ions in the SPS or LHC rings, may provide valuable information on the electron-nucleus weak-interaction coupling., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We present a theoretical investigation of the radiative recombination of twisted Bessel electrons with initially hydrogen-like (finally helium-like) heavy ions. In our study, we focus especially on the linear polarization of x-ray photons emitted in the electron capture into the ground $1s^2_{1/2}$ ionic state. Particular emphasis is placed on the question of how this polarization is affected if incident hydrogen-like ions are themselves spin-polarized. To explore such a "polarization transfer" we apply the density matrix theory and derive the Stokes parameters of recombination x-rays for the realistic case of collisions between macroscopic electron and ion beams. Based on the developed general approach two scenarios are discussed that are of interest for the planned experiments at ion storage rings. First, we demonstrate how the use of twisted electrons can empower the known method for the diagnostics of spin-polarized ion beams, based on the rotation of the linear polarization of recombination light. In the second scenario we show how the internal structure of ions beams with inhomogeneous intensity and spin patterns can be probed by the capture of Bessel electrons, carrying different values of angular momentum.

We present a theoretical investigation of the resonant elastic scattering of laser photons by ultra-relativistic partially stripped ions, that is the core process of the Gamma Factory project. Special emphasis in our study is placed on the angular distribution and polarization of scattered photons as observed in the collider and ion-rest reference frames. In order to describe these (angular and polarization) properties for arbitrary relativistic many-electron ion, the general approach, based on the application of irreducible polarization tensors, is laid down. By making use of the polarization tensors we explore in detail the scattering of both, conventional plane-wave- and twisted (or vortex) photons. For the former case we show how the propagation directions and polarization states of incident and outgoing photons are related to each other for the $n S_{0} \to n' P_{1} \to n S_{0}$, $n S_{1/2} \to n' P_{1/2} \to n S_{1/2}$ and $n S_{1/2} \to n' P_{3/2} \to n S_{1/2}$ resonant transitions. For the scattering of initially twisted light, that carries non-zero orbital angular momentum, we explore the angular distribution of secondary photons and discuss the conditions under which they are also twisted., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Investigations of isotope shifts of atomic spectral lines provide insights into nuclear properties. Deviations from the linear dependence of the isotope shifts of two atomic transitions on nuclear parameters, leading to a nonlinearity of the so-called King plot, are actively studied as a possible way of searching for the new physics. In the present work we calculate the King-plot nonlinearities originating from the Standard-Model atomic theory. The calculation is performed both analytically, for a model example applicable for an arbitrary atom, and numerically, for one-electron ions. It is demonstrated that the Standard-Model predictions of the King-plot nonlinearities are hypersensitive to experimental errors of nuclear charge radii. This effect significantly complicates identifications of possible King-plot nonlinearities originating from the new physics.

We present an experimental study of the quasi-elastic Raman scattering (QES) of plane-wave and twisted light by liquid crystals. Depending on their temperature, these crystals can exhibit isotropic, nematic and chiral nematic phases. The question is addressed of how the phase of a crystal and the state of incident light can affect the quasi-elastic energy spectra of the scattered radiation, whose shape is usually described by the combination of Lorentzian and Gaussian components. Special attention is paid to the \textit{chiral phase}, for which the Raman QES spectrum is dominated by a Lorentzian with reduced linewidth, pointing to diminished disorder and configurational entropy. Moreover, this phase is also known for a regime of iridescence (selective backscattering) which arises when the wavelength of incident light becomes comparable with the chiral pitch length. Detailed measurements, performed in this \textit{resonant} regime and by employing twisted light, carrying various projections of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), have indicated a low-energy scattering surplus depending on OAM. We present a theoretical investigation of the resonant elastic scattering of twisted light, carrying angular momentum, by partially stripped ions. Special emphasis is placed on a question of whether the scattered radiation is also twisted. In order to investigate such an "angular momentum transfer", we develop an approach that allows us to find a quantum state of the final photon without projecting it onto a detector state. A general expression for this so--called \textit{evolved} state of outgoing radiation is derived and it can be used to analyze the resonant scattering by any ion, independently of its shell structure. Here, we illustrate our approach with the strong electric dipole $n S_{0} \to n' P_{1} \to n S_{0}$ transitions, which play an important role for the Gamma Factory project at CERN. For the incident Bessel light, the scattered radiation is shown to be in a superposition of twisted modes with the projections of the total angular momentum $m_f = 0, \pm 1$. The larger values of $m_f$ can be efficiently generated by inducing transitions of higher multiplicity. This angular momentum transfer, together with a remarkable cross section that is many orders of magnitude larger than that of the backward Compton scattering, makes the resonant photon scattering an effective tool for the production of twisted x-- and even gamma--rays at the Gamma Factory facility., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure

The Gamma Factory (GF) is an ambitious proposal, currently explored within the CERN Physics Beyond Colliders program, for a source of photons with energies up to $\approx 400\,$MeV and photon fluxes (up to $\approx 10^{17}$ photons per second) exceeding those of the currently available gamma sources by orders of magnitude. The high-energy (secondary) photons are produced via resonant scattering of the primary laser photons by highly relativistic partially-stripped ions circulating in the accelerator. The secondary photons are emitted in a narrow cone and the energy of the beam can be monochromatized, eventually down to the $\approx1$ ppm level, via collimation, at the expense of the photon flux. Promising searches for new physics beyond the current Standard Model (SM) of particle physics are feasible through isotope-shift spectroscopy, which is sensitive to a hypothetical fifth force between the neutrons of the nucleus and the electrons of the shell. Such an interaction would be mediated by a new particle which could in principle be associated with dark matter. In so-called King plots, the mass-scaled frequency shifts of two optical transitions are plotted against each other for a series of isotopes. Subtle deviations from the expected linearity could reveal such a fifth force. Here, we study experimentally and theoretically six transitions in highly charged ions of Ca, an element with five stable isotopes of zero nuclear spin. Some of the transitions are suitable for upcoming high-precision coherent laser spectroscopy and optical clocks. Our results provide a sufficient number of clock transitions for -- in combination with those of singly charged Ca$^+$ -- application of the generalized King plot method. This will allow future high-precision measurements to remove higher-order SM-related nonlinearities and open a new door to yet more sensitive searches for unknown forces and particles., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We theoretically investigate the influence of gravity on laser light in a hemispherical optical cavity, operating on Earth. The propagation of light in such a cavity is modeled by a Gaussian beam, affected by the Earth's gravitational field. On laboratory scale, this field is described by the spacetime of homogeneous gravity, known as Rindler spacetime. In that spacetime, the beam is bent downwards and acquires a height dependent phase shift. As a consequence the phase fronts of the laser light differ from those of a usual Gaussian beam. Assuming that the initial beam enters the cavity along its symmetry axis, these gravitational effects cause variations of the beam phase with every cavity round trip. Detailed calculations are performed to investigate how these phase variations depend on the beam parameters and the cavity setup. The Gamma Factory initiative proposes to develop novel research tools at CERN by producing, accelerating and storing highly relativistic, partially stripped ion beams in the SPS and LHC storage rings. By exciting the electronic degrees of freedom of the stored ions with lasers, high-energy narrow-band photon beams will be produced by properly collimating the secondary radiation that is peaked in the direction of ions' propagation. Their intensities, up to $10^{17}$ photons per second, will be several orders of magnitude higher than those of the presently operating light sources in the particularly interesting $\gamma$--ray energy domain reaching up to 400 MeV. This article reviews opportunities that may be afforded by utilizing the primary beams for spectroscopy of partially stripped ions circulating in the storage ring, as well as the atomic-physics opportunities afforded by the use of the secondary high-energy photon beams. As known from Einstein's theory of general relativity, the propagation of light in the presence of a massive object is affected by gravity. In this work, we discuss whether the effect of gravitational light bending can be observed in Earth-based experiments, using high-finesse optical cavities. In order to do this, we theoretically investigate the dynamics of electromagnetic waves in the spacetime of a homogeneous gravitational field and give an analytical expression for the resulting modifications to Gaussian beam propagation. This theoretical framework is used to calculate the intensity profile at the output of a Fabry-P\'erot cavity and to estimate the imprints of Earth's gravity on the cavity output signal. In particular, we found that gravity causes an asymmetry of the output intensity profile. Based on that, we discuss a measurement scheme, that could be realized in facilities like the GEO600 gravitational wave detector and the AEI 10 m detector prototype., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

For more than 40 years, most astrophysical observations and laboratory studies of two key soft x-ray diagnostic $2p-3d$ transitions, $3C$ and $3D$, in Fe XVII ions found oscillator strength ratios $f(3C)/f(3D)$ disagreeing with theory, but uncertainties had precluded definitive statements on this much studied conundrum. Here, we resonantly excite these lines using synchrotron radiation at PETRA III, and reach, at a millionfold lower photon intensities, a 10 times higher spectral resolution, and 3 times smaller uncertainty than earlier work. A theoretical analysis is presented for the excitation of single many-electron atoms and ions by twisted (or vortex) light. Special emphasis is put on excitations that can proceed via several electric and magnetic multipole channels. We argue that the relative strength of these multipoles is very sensitive to the topological charge and kinematic parameters of the incident light and can be strongly modified with respect to the plane-wave case. Most remarkably, the modification of multipole transitions by twisted radiation can be described by means of a geometrical factor. This factor is independent of the shell structure of a particular target atom and just reflects the properties of the light beam as well as the position of an atom with respect to the vortex axis. An analytical expression for the geometrical factor is derived for Bessel photons and for a realistic experimental situation in which the position of an atom is not well determined. To illustrate the use of the geometrical factor for the analysis of (future) measurements, detailed calculations are presented for the $3s3p \, ^3P_1 \to 3s 3p \, ^1P_1$ excitation in neutral Mg., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We present a theoretical analysis of an electron confined by a Penning trap, also known as geonium, that is affected by gravity. In particular, we investigate the gravitational influence on the electron dynamics and the electromagnetic field of the trap. We consider the special case of a homogeneous gravitational field, which is represented by Rindler spacetime. In this spacetime the Hamiltonian of an electron with anomalous magnetic moment is constructed. Based on this Hamiltonian and the exact solution to Maxwell equations for the field of a Penning trap in Rindler spacetime, we derived the transition energies of geonium up to the relativistic corrections of $1/\mathrm{c}^2$. These transition energies are used to obtain an extension of the well known $\mathrm{g}_s$-factor formula introduced by L. S. Brown and G. Gabrielse [Rev. Mod. Using resonant two-step laser excitation of trapped $^{232}\mathrm{Th}^+$ ions, we observe 166 previously unknown energy levels of even parity within the energy range from 7.8 to 9.8 eV and angular momenta from $J=1/2$ to $7/2$. We also classify the high-lying levels observed in our earlier experiments by the total angular momentum and perform ab-initio calculations to compare their results with the observed level density. The observed levels can be relevant for the excitation or decay of the $^{229m}\mathrm{Th}$ isomeric nuclear state which lies in this energy range. We investigate the process of nuclear excitation via a two-photon electron transition (NETP) for the case of the doubly charged thorium. The theory of the NETP process has been devised originally for heavy helium-like ions. In this work, we study this process in the nuclear clock isotope $^{229}$Th in the $2+$ charge state. For this purpose, we employ a combination of configuration interaction and many-body perturbation theory to calculate the probability of NETP in resonance approximation. The experimental scenario we propose for the excitation of the low lying isomeric state in $^{229}$Th is a circular process starting with a two-step pumping stage followed by NETP. The ideal intermediate steps in this process depend on the supposed energy $\hbar\omega_N$ of the nuclear isomeric state. For each of these energies, the best initial state for NETP is calculated. Special focus is put on the most recent experimental results for $\hbar\omega_N$.

The thorium nucleus with mass number $A=229$ has attracted much interest because its extremely low lying first excited isomeric state at about $8$eV opens the possibility for the development of a nuclear clock. However, neither the exact energy of this nuclear isomer nor properties, such as nuclear magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moment are known to a high precision so far. The latter can be determined by investigating the hyperfine structure of thorium atoms or ions. Due to its electronic structure and the long lifetime of the nuclear isomeric state, Th$^{2+}$ is especially suitable for such kind of studies. In this letter we present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the hyperfine structure of the $^{229}$Th$^{2+}$ ion in the nuclear ground and isomeric state. A very good agreement between theory and experiment is found for the nuclear ground state. Moreover, we use our calculations to confirm the recently presented experimental value for the nuclear magnetic dipole moment of the thorium nuclear isomer, which was in contradiction to previous theoretical studies.

We propose an improvement of the basis for the solution of the stationary two-centre Dirac equation in Cassini coordinates using the finite-basis-set method presented in Ref. [1]. For the calculations in Ref. [1], we constructed the basis for approximating the energy eigenfunctions by using smooth piecewise defined polynomials, called B-splines. In the present article, we report that an analysis of the employed representation of the Dirac matrices shows that the above approximation is not efficient using B-splines only. Therefore, we include basis functions which are defined using functions with step-like behaviour instead of B-splines. Thereby, we achieve a significant increase of accuracy of results as compared to Ref. [1].

We studied angular distributions of x rays emitted in resonant recombination of highly charged iron and krypton ions, resolving dielectronic, trielectronic, and quadruelectronic channels. A tunable electron beam drove these processes, inducing x rays registered by two detectors mounted along and perpendicular to the beam axis. The measured emission asymmetries comprehensively benchmarked full-order atomic calculations. We conclude that accurate polarization diagnostics of hot plasmas can only be obtained under the premise of inclusion of higher-order processes that were neglected in earlier work., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We report linear polarization measurements of x rays emitted due to dielectronic recombination into highly charged krypton ions. The ions in the He-like through O-like charge states were populated in an electron beam ion trap with the electron beam energy adjusted to recombination resonances in order to produce $K\alpha$ x rays. The x rays were detected with a newly developed Compton polarimeter using a beryllium scattering target and 12 silicon x-ray detector diodes sampling the azimuthal distribution of the scattered x rays. The extracted degrees of linear polarization of several dielectronic recombination transitions agree with results of relativistic distorted--wave calculations. We also demonstrate a high sensitivity of the polarization to the Breit interaction, which is remarkable for a medium-$Z$ element like krypton. We study in detail the strong-field QED process of non-linear Compton scattering in short intense plane wave laser pulses of circular polarization. Our main focus is placed on how the spectrum of the back-scattered laser light depends on the shape and duration of the initial short intense pulse. Although this pulse shape dependence is very complicated and highly non-linear, and has never been addressed explicitly, our analysis reveals that all the dependence on the laser pulse shape is contained in a class of three-parameter master integrals. Here we present completely analytical expressions for the non-linear Compton spectrum in terms of these master integrals. We present a theoretical study on the recombination of a free electron into the ground state of a hydrogen-like ion in the presence of an external laser field. Emphasis is placed on the effects caused by the laser dressing of the residual ionic bound state. To investigate how this dressing affects the total and angle-differential cross section of laser assisted radiative recombination (LARR) we apply first-order perturbation theory and the separable Coulomb-Volkov-continuum ansatz. Using this approach detailed calculations were performed for low-$Z$ hydrogen like ions and laser intensities in the range from $I_L=10^{11}\text{W/cm}^2$ to $I_L=10^{13}\text{W/cm}^2$. It is seen that the total cross section as a function of the laser intensity is remarkably affected by the bound state dressing. Moreover the laser dressing becomes manifest as asymmetries in the angular distribution and the (energy) spectrum of the emitted recombination photons., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Recent advances in the production of twisted electron beams with a subnanometer spot size offer unique opportunities to explore the role of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in basic atomic processes. In the present work, we address one of these processes: radiative recombination of twisted electrons with bare ions. Based on the density matrix formalism and the non-relativistic Schr\"odinger theory, analytical expressions are derived for the angular distribution and the linear polarization of photons emitted due to the capture of twisted electrons into the ground state of (hydrogen-like) ions. We show that these angular and polarization distributions are sensitive to both, the transverse momentum and the topological charge of the electron beam. We investigate the angular distribution of electrons that are emitted in the ionization of hydrogen-like ions by twisted photons. Analysis is performed based on the first-order perturbation theory and the non-relativistic Schr\"odinger equation. Special attention is paid to the dependence of the electron emission pattern on the impact parameter b of the ion with respect to the centre of the twisted wave front. In order to explore such a dependence, detailed calculations were carried out for the photoionization of the 1s ground and 2 py excited states of neutral hydrogen atoms. Based on these calculations, we argue that for relatively small impact parameters the electron angular distributions may be strongly affected by altering the position of the atom within the wave front. In contrast, if the atom is placed far from the front centre, the emission pattern of the electrons is independent on the impact parameter b and resembles that observed in the photoionization by plane wave photons., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

The linear polarization of the characteristic photon emission from few-electron ions is studied for its sensitivity with regard to the nuclear spin and magnetic moment of the ions. Special attention is paid, in particular, to the K$\alpha_1$ ($1s 2p_{3/2} ^{1,3}P_{1,2} \to 1s^2 ^1S_0$) decay of selected helium-like ions following the radiative electron capture into initially hydrogen-like species. Based on the density matrix theory, a unified description is developed that includes both, the many-electron and hyperfine interactions as well as the multipole-mixing effects arising from the expansion of the radiation field. It is shown that the polarization of the K$\alpha_1$ line can be significantly affected by the mutipole mixing between the leading $M2$ and hyperfine-induced $E1$ components of $1s2p ^3P_2, F_i \to 1s^2 ^1S_0, F_f$ transitions. This $E1$-$M2$ mixing strongly depends on the nuclear properties of the considered isotopes and can be addressed experimentally at existing heavy-ion storage rings.

We study Bessel beams of two-level atoms that are driven by a linearly polarized laser field. Starting from the Schroedinger equation, we determine the states of two-level atoms in a plane-wave field respecting propagation directions both of the atom and the field. For such laser-driven two-level atoms, we construct Bessel beams beyond the typical paraxial approximation. We show that the probability density of these atomic beams obtains a non-trivial, Bessel-squared-type behavior and can be tuned under the special choice of the atom and laser parameters, such as the nuclear charge, atom velocity, laser frequency, and propagation geometry of the atom and laser beams. Moreover, we spatially and temporally characterize the beam of hydrogen and selected (neutral) alkali-metal atoms that carry non-zero orbital angular momentum (OAM). Due to electron-nucleus weak interaction, atomic bound states with different parities turn out to be mixed. We discuss a prospect for measuring the mixing parameter between the nearly degenerate metastable states 1s_{1/2} 2s_{1/2} : J = 0 and 1s_{1/2} 2p_{1/2} : J = 0 in heliumlike Uranium. A theoretical study of the polarization entanglement of two photons emitted in the decay of metastable ionic states is performed within the framework of density matrix theory and second-order perturbative approach. Particular attention is paid to relativistic and non-dipole effects that become important for medium- and high-$Z$ ions. To analyze these effects, the degree of entanglement is evaluated both in the dipole approximation and within the rigorous relativistic theory. Detailed calculations are performed for the two-photon $2s_{1/2}\to 1s_{1/2}$ transition in hydrogen-like, as well as for the $1s_{1/2}\, 2s_{1/2} \; {}^1S_0 \to 1s_{1/2}^2 \; {}^1S_0$, $1s_{1/2} \, 2s_{1/2} \; {}^3S_1\to 1s_{1/2}^2 \; {}^1S_0$ and $1s_{1/2} \, 2p_{1/2} \; {}^3P_0\to 1s_{1/2}^2 \; {}^1S_0$ transitions in helium-like ions.

The leading-order electron-atom bremsstrahlung is investigated within the rigorous relativistic approach based on the partial-wave representation of the Dirac wave functions in the external atomic field. Approximating the atomic target by an effective local potential, we calculate the double-differential cross section and the polarization correlations in a wide range of the impact energies. Connection between the bremsstrahlung at the hard-photon end point of the spectrum and the continuum-threshold limit of the radiative recombination is studied. A detailed analysis of the screening effect and the energy dependence of the polarization correlations is presented, with the main focus on the high impact energy region.

Polarization properties of the photons emitted in the two-photon decay of hydrogen-like ions are studied within the framework of the density matrix and second-order perturbation theory. In particular, we derive the polarization correlation function that gives the probability of the (two-photon) coincidence measurement performed by polarization-sensitive detectors. Detailed calculations of this function are performed for the $2s_{1/2} \to 1s_{1/2}$ transition in neutral hydrogen as well as Xe$^{53+}$ and U$^{91+}$ ions. The obtained results allow us to understand the influence of relativistic and non-dipole effects on the polarization correlations in the bound-bound two-photon transitions in heavy ions.

The recombination of an electron with an (initially) hydrogen-like ion is investigated. The effect of the electron-electron interaction is treated rigorously to the first order in the parameter 1/Z and within the screening-potential approximation to higher orders in 1/Z, with Z being the nuclear charge number. The two-electron correction contains the dielectronic-recombination part, which contributes to the process not only under the resonance condition for the projectile energy but also in the regions far from resonances. The concept of a generalized nonanalytic expansion which involves nonanalytic combinations of exponentials, logarithms and powers of a coupling is introduced and its use illustrated in various areas of physics. Dispersion relations for the resonance energies of odd anharmonic oscillators are discussed, and higher-order formulas are presented for cubic and quartic potentials.

Based on quantum electrodynamics, we reexamine the two-photon decay of one-electron atoms. Special attention is paid to the calculation of the (two-photon) total decay rates which can be viewed as the imaginary part of the two-loop self-energy. We argue that our approach can easily be applied to the cases with a virtual state having an intermediate energy between the initial and the final state of the decay process leading, thus, to the resonance peaks in the two-photon energy distribution. The alignment of nuclear states resonantly formed in nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC) is studied by means of a density matrix technique. The vibrational excitations of the nucleus are described by a collective model and the electrons are treated in a relativistic framework. Formulas for the angular distribution of photons emitted in the nuclear relaxation are derived. We present numerical results for alignment parameters and photon angular distributions for a number of heavy elements in the case of E2 nuclear transitions. Our results are intended to help future experimental attempts to discern NEEC from radiative recombination, which is the dominant competing process.

Today, the 'hydrogen atom model' is known to play its role not only in teaching the basic elements of quantum mechanics but also for building up effective theories in atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, plasma physics, or even in the design of semiconductor devices. Therefore, the analytical as well as numerical solutions of the hydrogen--like ions are frequently required both, for analyzing experimental data and for carrying out quite advanced theoretical studies. In order to support a fast and consistent access to these (Coulomb--field) solutions, here we present the Dirac program which has been developed originally for studying the properties and dynamical behaviour of the (hydrogen--like) ions. In the present version, a set of Maple procedures is provided for the Coulomb wave and Green's functions by applying the (wave) equations from both, the nonrelativistic and relativistic theory. Apart from the interactive access to these functions, moreover, a number of radial integrals are also implemented in the Dirac program which may help the user to construct transition amplitudes and cross sections as they occur frequently in the theory of ion--atom and ion--photon collisions., Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure

The non-resonant two-photon ionization of hydrogen-like ions is studied in second-order perturbation theory, based on the Dirac equation. To carry out the summation over the complete Coulomb spectrum, a Green function approach has been applied to the computation of the ionization cross sections. Exact second-order relativistic cross sections are compared with data as obtained from a relativistic long-wavelength approximation as well as from the scaling of non-relativistic results. For high-Z ions, the relativistic wavefunction contraction may lower the two-photon ionization cross sections by a factor of two or more, while retardation effects appear less pronounced but still give rise to non-negligible contributions., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures
