The following is a meditative reflection on an anecdote from Jeremy Safran's Psychoanalysis and Buddhism. Moving through Safran's description of an important moment in his development as a student of Buddhism, the author weaves images, practices, and ways of being and feeling into an homage to Safran's legacy integrating psychoanalytic and Buddhist praxis and epistemology. Dr. Jeremy Safran had a unique talent to seamlessly weave together clinical work with his broad knowledge of philosophy, history, and theology. Alongside his commitment to researching the minutest clinical interactions, he was conscious of the broad values of the nature of the good life that underpinned his analytic approach. This paper will explore the concepts of the enchanted unconscious, clinical impasses, negotiation, and surrender, suggesting that these concepts together provide insight into Safran's larger philosophy of life. It will then provide the approach to these concepts of the Rebbes of Ishbitz/Radzin, a school of Polish Hasidic thought. It will conclude with an exploration of how both Safran's psychoanalytic approach and the Ishbitz/Radzin Rebbes' Hasidic approach to the Torah provide distinct insights and applications of these concepts, which can be mutually enriching for both disciplines. The sense of agency, our felt sense of authorship for our actions, is a difficult concept to define, yet its faltering stands at the heart of psychopathology. Historically undertheorized by psychoanalysis and typically positioned opposite relatedness by clinical psychology, Jeremy Safran conceived of agency and relatedness as paradoxically related. This paper pays tribute to Safran's ideas by taking his writings on agency as a starting point to elaborate how agency forms, and goes awry, in the relational crucible of early life. In doing so, the paper draws on the developmental theory of Winnicott, empirical research on embodied agency from adjacent fields of study, and Safran's clinical phenomenology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MISOPHONIA , *TRANSGENERATIONAL trauma , *AUDITORY perception , *PSYCHOTHERAPY , *HOPE - Abstract
Misophonia is a condition in which everyday sounds evoke pain and reactive aversion. The etiology of misophonia is largely unknown, with discordant conceptualizations of its roots, ranging from psychiatric, to neurological, to a combination of auditory processing and neurobiological dysfunction. Common protocols are focused on symptom reduction and management, though have not been proven to be clinically effective. For these reasons, it is generally considered to be difficult to treat. In this paper, I re-consider misophonia as a complex interweaving of auditory, neurobiological and relational experience. Reflecting upon a clinical case, I present misophonia in the context of self-with-other regulation from a developmental lens, traverse the landscape of misophonic self states, explore the complex toll of dissociation and intergenerational trauma in relational space, and consider ways in which the painful somatic-auditory bell of misophonia concretizes self and relational "hope" and "dread". Finally, I will offer some thoughts on how psychoanalytic psychotherapy can create new relational-neurobiological pathways out of the misophonic experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on fieldwork in a Bashkir Sufi circle in Russia, this article explores my interlocutors' mode of experiencing the world and transcendence. By letting myself be seen in the field, I let them shape the terms of our encounter as a way of glimpsing their mode of knowing. I explore my fieldwork experience as a transformation of the self in parallel with my interlocutors' narrations of encounters with saints. I reflect on field experiences in which the limits of my rational thinking are revealed and mirrored in my interlocutors' spiritual experiences. Being seen by their sheikh, my interlocutors experience a mode of vision that reveals the heart as an organ of perception. Similarly, as I experience being seen in the field, I am pointed to my own heart and soul. This mode of knowing that I glimpse into sheds new light on encounters with "otherness" and transcendence in anthropology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aims to investigate Puputan Margarana and its impact on the physical revolution in Bali, both from a military and psychological perspective, and then to gain a clearer understanding of the tactics and strategies of resistance in Bali following the Puputan Margarana. This study employs historical methods encompassing heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The research findings indicate that the impact of Puputan Margarana resulted in psychological turmoil for the fighters in the Buleleng region, leading to sadness and a profound sense of loss due to the fall of Ngurah Rai and his staff. The post-Puputan Margarana physical revolution in Bali witnessed the reorganization of MBU-DPRI and the emergence of MBI, along with various persuasive actions to implement the minimum Banyuning program, the infiltration of DPRI's influence into government organs, and acts of violence against those openly supportive of NICA. With the achievement of the Renville Agreement in 1948, the shift in resistance in Buleleng came to be known as the "penurunan" (covert withdrawal) and "penyerahan" (official surrender), as orchestrated by Wijakusuma and the core leaders of MBU-DPRI.

In this research paper, we examined the influence of demographic and household factors on adecision to surrender a life insurance policy before the end of the policy term. As per thehandbook on Indian Insurance Statistics 2020-21, by the 5 th year of policy sale, only 4 out of 24 life insurers could retain half of their policies. One of the reasons for this low persistenceis the increased surrender of policies. Surrendering a policy means the policyholdercancelling the policy and agreeing to take the cash value/surrender value accrued to thepolicy over time and forgoing the death benefit or maturity benefit. Generally, a policyacquires surrender value after the policyholder has paid the premiums continuously for threeyears. A survey of randomly selected 537 policyholders was conducted using a structuredquestionnaire to examine the influence of demographic and household factors on a decisionto surrender a life insurance policy. Results of our study suggest that demographic andhousehold factors influence the decision to surrender a life insurance policy. Marital statusand occupation are statistically significant predictors of the decision to surrender a policy.

Introduction: Nonattachment is a flexible and balanced way of relating to experiences that involves accepting or allowing, instead of clinging to, expectations or outcomes. Advancing the understanding of how people relate to nonattachment is important because of the associated mental health benefits. Aims: To qualitatively explore awareness of, and resistance to, nonattachment in a UK-based yoga community. Methods: A reflexive thematic analysis was conducted based on transcripts of ten semi-structured interviews. Results: Findings indicated a general lack of consensus in understanding nonattachment, with explanatory themes of (i) resistance related to external forces conflicting with internal knowing, (ii) bracing for impact, and (iii) difficulty navigating how to embrace nonattachment. However, despite the participants’ apparent implicit negativity towards nonattachment, they acknowledged its benefits for accommodating change. Conclusions: These findings have important implications for the wider adoption and application of nonattachment in applied settings.

In CME/CPD, a significant part of research is about effectiveness. Attention to the development process can be vital to understand how it impacts progress and results. This study aims to explore an innovative process of applying a combined approach using design-based research, collaborative innovation, and program theory to develop CPD about type 2 diabetes for GPs and clinic nurses with a group of interprofessional stakeholders. In particular, the development process of the combined approach and how it impacts the progress and the activities. We applied two qualitative methods. First, we analysed 159 documents from the development process, and second, eight semi-structured key informant interviews. Data were deductively analysed using 15 predefined elements derived from the combined approach combined with open coding analyses. The analysis showed how the combined approach structured the process. And the interviews broadened our understanding of the relationship between the process and the activities. Four additional themes were constructed from the open coding, including surrender to the process. Surrendering was a central part of the interviewees' participation in the process. The combined approach facilitated this unfamiliar experience of surrender. By supporting participants to surrender, the combined approach enabled an expansion of interprofessional collaboration and the development of innovative activities and learning methods in CPD on type 2 diabetes. Life insurance is a long-term contract in which company is committed to paying a specified death or maturity benefit provided that the premiums are paid by the insured. However, a policyholder can terminate the policy either through lapse or surrender at any point of time. influence the profitability and liquidity of insurance companies through acquisition cost, loss of income from renewal premiums etc., and hence needs to be controlled and managed carefully. In this research, an effort is made to identify factors leading to lapsation and surrender of life insurance products and statistically assess their importance based on primary data collected from life insurance policy holders. The data and information collected about reasons for lapsing/surrendering a life insurance policy were analysed using Gretl. A logit model was developed to test the marginal effect of various factors having association with the decision to lapse/surrender a life insurance policy. ofLogit model on lapsation have identified age, marriage, loss of job, debt, hospitalization of dependents, agents' poor service and poor return from policy as the drivers of lapsation. Similarly results of logit model on surrender activity has identified marital status, occupation, marriage of self and children, loss of job, debt, children's education, house construction and poor return from policy are the major reasons for surrendering a life insurance policy before the completion of the term. LIFE insurance policies ,INSURANCE policies ,LIFE insurance ,PAYMENT ,DEEP learning - Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Life insurance has a very low adoption rate in Iran, mainly due to policy surrender. This research aims to analyze the individual characteristics and insurance contract features that influence the surrendering of term life insurance policies. METHODS: The study utilizes a pilot database of 35,171 policy-holders and pensioners registered by an Iranian insurance company in 2021. Data mining, deep learning, and neural network algorithms are used for analysis due to their high accuracy in prediction: FINDINGS: The model demonstrates desirable performance based on evaluation metrics with a 74 percent accuracy in predicting both types of surrendered and non-surrendered insurance policies. The model performs better in predicting non-surrendered insurance policies more attention is given to interpreting those results. Despite imbalanced data, the model still performs well. In the dataset, surrendered policies make up only 3 percent of the total, leading to bias towards predicting the majority class. Nonetheless, the model accurately predicts and categorizes most surrendered policies, covering 59 percent of the total 244 cases. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that certain demographic characteristics, such as age, female gender, health surcharge, and accident risk rate, as well as specific contract characteristics, including policy term, time since start date, longer premium payment methods, higher annual increase in capital and premium, fewer covered risks, and lower benefits, are negatively correlated with policy surrender. Furthermore, the results suggest that if the insured person is the policy surrender themselves, the probability of surrender is minimized. On the other hand, if the insured person is someone else, especially distant relatives, the probability of surrender increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VARIABLE annuities , *SURVIVORS' benefits , *VALUATION , *INTEREST rates , *GROWTH funds , *ADMINISTRATIVE fees , *PRICES - Abstract
This work studies the valuation and optimal surrender of variable (equity-linked) annuities under a Lévy-driven equity market with mortality risk. We consider a practical periodic fee structure which can vary over time and is assessed as a proportion of the fund value. At maturity, the fund value is returned to the policyholder according to a guaranteed minimum accumulation benefit (GMAB). Mortality risk is also modeled discretely, and the contract offers a guaranteed minimum death benefit (GMBD) prior to maturity. The benefits accommodate caps on the growth of funds (in addition to the rising floor) to reduce the fee level and as a disincentive to early surrender. Interest rates are modeled via a deterministic discounting term structure, which can be calibrated (bootstrapped) to the rates market, according to market convention. An efficient and accurate valuation framework is developed, along with closed form pricing formulas in the case where policy surrender is not permitted. Numerous experiments are conducted to illustrate the interplay between contract parameters and the decision to surrender, and we provide an extensive analysis that investigates how to structure contracts to disincentivize early surrender. Extradition or delivery of a person who is accused or convicted is a legal process that enables the conduct of criminal proceedings and the execution of criminal sanctions against them in another country. Given that the process of extraditing the accused or convicted is regulated by law, the question of the position of the defense counsel in this process arises. By applying the normative method in this paper, through the analysis of statutory provisions and provisions of international treaties, the position of the defense counsel in extradition proceedings in the Republic of Serbia has been systematically presented, that is, their rights, duties, and powers at every stage of these proceedings with a critical overview of certain legal solutions. Furthermore, international standards related to the role and activities of the Committee against Torture and the European Court of Human Rights regarding the regulation and implementation of extradition proceedings and the position of the defense counsel in these proceedings are presented.

PARENTHOOD ,WORKING hours ,NEWSPAPER reading ,SELFISHNESS ,MOTHERS - Abstract
The first and best advice I can give a new mother or father is one word: surrender. Surrender to being a mother or father and to what that entails. What does it entail? It entails a surrender of selfishness, the most natural of human qualities, and an embrace of the selfless job, or should I say, calling, at hand. Years ago when I was a new father, I resisted this imperative. I would arrive home after a long day at work wanting some "me" time, only to be handed off my son or sons by an overworked wife and mother who had cared for them while I was away. Centered on my needs only, I would try to read a newspaper or magazine or watch my evening news programs, my pre-fathering ritual, as my sons crawled all over me. I finally whispered to myself, "Surrender to being a father." I changed the channel from the PBS NewsHour to my sons' favorite Nickelodeon and soon became a fan of SpongeBob SquarePants and his underwater friends at Bikini Bottom. Whispering "Surrender to being a father" helped me toss away my personal selfishness and focus on what really mattered: my children. Over the years as a practicing physician, I have also begun to whisper to myself, "Surrender to the Art of Medicine." When the phone rings at 3 a. m. or a patient lands on the clinic doorstep at closing time, I tell myself, "Surrender." Like parenthood, the art and practice of medicine cannot be well conducted without embracing our profession as a selfless calling of service to others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reverse mortgages are a financial tool for lower-income seniors to release home equity and increase their retirement income. In the United States, reverse mortgages are generally insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) through the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) program, which protects borrowers from owing more than the value of their house. Previous research on reverse mortgage valuation typically focuses on mortgage termination risks related to mortality and morbidity, but few studies explore the impact of early surrender on the entire risk profile of reverse mortgages. To fill this gap, we propose a utility approach to investigate borrowers' surrender behavior. We explore how a surrender-and-refinance strategy affects the cash flows of the HECM insurance program and also assess its tail risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regarding the construction of the surrender agreements between Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, there has been ongoing consideration and debate on the basic principles and rules. Human rights protection in the surrender of fugitive offenders between Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau is as important as that in traditional extraditions. But the rights need to be protected in a sophisticated, interactive, and constructive way under the 'one country, two systems' regime. This article compares the extradition and surrender systems, concluding that Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau should take human rights protection into serious consideration, while complying with the obligation to protect the common interest of the whole country and to promote human rights development in China. The combined obligations require that the requested region play a more responsible, involved and proactive role in surrender-related human rights issues. The European Arrest Warrant experience can offer some inspiration for this. But more tailored measures should be developed in the legal context of Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. The article identifies several specific human rights that should be protected in the surrender procedure. Some traditional extradition principles as well as human rights provisions have already been used to protect these rights. Human rights protections are contained in Chinese legislation, but more attention should be paid to law enforcement procedures in relation to the surrender of fugitive offenders. This article suggests that evaluation, assurance, monitoring, and reporting mechanisms should be applied, and the main role should be delegated to judicial authorities under the principle of mutual trust. This article also suggests that the procedural rights of the requested individuals in the requested region should be protected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper considers variable annuity (VA) contracts embedded with guaranteed minimum accumulation benefit (GMAB) riders when policyholder’s proceeds are taxed upon early surrender or maturity. These contracts promise the return of the premium paid by the policyholder, or a higher rolled-up value, at the end of the investment period. A partial differential equation valuation framework which exploits the numerical method of lines is used to determine fair fees that render the policyholder and insurer breakeven. Two taxation regimes are considered: one where capital gains are allowed to offset losses and a second where gains do not offset losses. Most insurance providers highlight the tax-deferred features of VA contracts. We show that the regime under which the insured is taxed significantly impacts prices. If losses are allowed to offset gains then this enhances the market, increasing the policyholder’s willingness to participate in the market compared to the case when losses are not allowed to offset gains. With fair fees from the policyholder’s perspective, we show that the net profit is generally positive for insurance companies offering the contract as a naked option without any hedge. We also show how investment policy, as reflected in the Sharpe ratio, impacts and interacts with policyholder persistency., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Through the inscrutable state of at-one-ment, one (be)comes to know the other from the inside, to experience the other's experience as one's own, rather than like one's own. In the clinical setting, this occurrence is valuable in and of itself, even when it is not acknowledged or understood by the analytic pair, as it allows the enigmatic possibility of communicating the incommunicable that lies beyond words and relations, echoing the unique embryonic form of being and communicating. Such clinical occurrences invite us to reconsider the common formulations of transference and countertransference and move beyond their inherent notion of twoness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This case study focuses on the treatment of a 44-year-old Dutch man presenting with an anxious God representation and religious struggles according to DSM-5 criteria. Having received prior treatment for a panic disorder and alcohol use disorder, the patient was given a 60-day treatment in which the Jesus Prayer intervention was used to address his religious and spiritual problems. To our knowledge, this is the first case study involving the Jesus Prayer in the treatment of a patient. The intervention had positive effects on the patient's religious and spiritual problems concerning an anxious God representation, religious struggles, stress levels and surrender to God. The intervention may also play a supporting role in decreasing symptoms of depression and anxiety and in promoting global mental health, as reliable change index analyses revealed symptom reduction between baseline levels and at post-assessment levels for all measured symptoms, with a semi-gradual decrease over the course of treatment. These improvements were continued in a 3-month follow-up assessment, suggesting promise for the Jesus Prayer as an effective treatment method for religious and spiritual problems. Recommendations regarding the importance of assessing the religious life of patients and implementing spiritual interventions are discussed, as well as the relevance of the therapist's own assumptions when treating a religious or spiritual problem. Under the ‘one country, two systems’ policy, the surrender of fugitive offenders between Mainland China and Hong Kong has been debated. This article will frame the debate on the application of traditional extradition rules in Mainland China and Hong Kong by exploring the more recent ‘European Arrest Warrant’ system and the long-standing US interstate rendition system. It thus aims to find a suitable model for Mainland China and Hong Kong. The US interstate rendition system is one domestic system, which seems most appropriate for application to Mainland China and Hong Kong as two regions of the same country. However, this article finds that the US interstate rendition system is too direct and inflexible to be enacted by Mainland China and Hong Kong where the legal situation is more complicated and human rights protection differs. This article argues that the European Arrest Warrant can better address the ‘one country, two systems’ situation of Mainland China and Hong Kong. Mainland China and Hong Kong can learn from the European Arrest Warrant to apply the ‘mutual recognition principle’ and other concrete extradition principles to their own surrender system.

LEGAL rights , *ISLAMIC law , *SELF-defense , *MURDER , *SOUL , *ZAKAT - Abstract
Islamic law has decided on self-preservation. From the texts which have talked about murder is the saying of Allah, the Exalted, about son of Adam, Peace of Allah be upon him, that he had said to his brother: “If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you (mankind, jinn, and all that exists). The outward meaning of this verse refers to the permissibility of surrendering to murder unjustly. Outwardly, this contradicts with the legal texts which permit self-defense. Therefore, jurists have differed: Is self-defense is a legal duty on the injured party and is not permitted to him to assign of or is it a legal right he may assign of? The research aims to remove the ambiguity from this Glorious Verse, stating the correct understanding of, the rule of surrendering to murder unjustly, the jurists’ doctrines in that and the preponderant opinion and demonstrating the conditions of non-ensuring of the aggressor in case of damage due to self-defense. The researcher has followed the comparative inductive and deductive approaches through a study of the case as a comparative study. It has been reached some chosen rules from which is that it is not permissible to surrender to murder in an unjust way and the self-defense is a legal duty towards the legally responsible with its conditions. If the man had defensed about himself, then, the aggressor’s soul has been damaged or some of its organs, there would have been no liability on the self-defensed party at all. There are conditions for slipping the aggressor’s ensuring that ensure safeguarding people’s rights and preventing from covering-up under the principle of the legal defense for assaulting the blood, honor and funds. TRUST , *WARRANTS (Law) , *CUSTODIAL sentences , *LEGAL recognition , *EUROPEAN Union law - Abstract
This article discusses whether a recognition mechanism based on a relationship of trust sustains surrender under the EU-UK TCA. Having framed the main features of the new judicial cooperation arrangements, the article firstly shows that the EU-UK Arrest Warrant entails a brand-new form of recognition of custodial decisions, labelled as recognition à la carte. Secondly, the article underlines that this form of recognition is grounded on a specific relationship of trust, different from the one governing the AFSJ, framed as mutual core trust. Finally, the paper discusses the enhanced role of the ECtHR in reviewing the application of the EU-UK Arrest Warrant, thus illustrating why ECJ case-law concerning the EAW system could play a major role in shaping the Strasbourg Court's reasoning. This study focuses on amnesty and surrender in the White Lotus war (1796–1804) from the rebel perspective. Offers of amnesty corresponded to Confucian norms regarding the relationship between rulers and subjects and were regularly utilized throughout the war by the court and its officials as a tool to pacify and succor the people. Paternalistic language about the proper behavior of good subjects notwithstanding, the rebels acted of their own accord. The rebels made strategic decisions about amnesty and surrender and sought the advantage when opportunities arose; their responses to amnesty proclamations accordingly alternated between engagement and opposition. Over the course of the revolt, there was significant resistance to pacification initiatives from the rebel side. Rebel intransigence detracted from the efficacy of amnesty policies and compelled the court to adapt its tactics. In sum, viewing state policies of appeasement from the rebel side reveals the contingencies governing decisions to surrender and further demonstrates that the contest over amnesty and surrender was an important component of the overall conflict. BEREAVEMENT , *ACHIEVEMENT , *HEALING , *WISHES , *POSSIBILITY - Abstract
This essay explores the psychological and spiritual process of our ability to surrender, accept that which we cannot change or repair, and to mourn. This process stands in tension within us between the unconscious pull to relive things that went wrong, to relive them and attempt to do them right this time, and to heal ourselves through reparation. A contemporary perspective tries to break those binary models of mind and acknowledges that we live in constant tension between the wish to avoid and the capacity to bear the pain and losses that life brings. In this essay I explore the latter. When we surrender, when we accept that which cannot be changed or fixed, we touch an emotional truth that allows us to start mourning. That permission to grieve for our losses and faults connects us with life and welcomes the birth of new possibilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lo—TEK ,climate adaptation ,adaptation pathways ,adapt ,surrender ,Architecture ,NA1-9428 - Abstract
This article considers the traditional water systems of indigenous cultures and explores their innovations as unique responses to the impacts of climate change in the global south. Local communities have been living with and developing water-responsive infrastructures for generations that engage and support the complex ecosystems they inhabit. Many of these innovations improve coastal resiliency, yet remain undocumented and unexplored in the evolution of contemporary solutions. Rooted in traditional ecological knowledge, or TEK, these technologies work symbiotically with, rather than against nature, and offer examples of a more comprehensive approach to underwater and intertidal design. These innovations are Lo—TEK, a term coined by designer and author Julia Watson, that is defined as resilient infrastructures developed by indigenous people through Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) (Watson 2019). The movement to bring these innovations to the forefront of the design field counters the idea that Lo—TEK indigenous innovation is low-tech, a term often incorrectly applied to indigenous innovation that means unsophisticated, uncomplicated, and primitive. In actuality, Lo—TEK aligns to today’s sustainable values of low-energy, low-impact and low-cost, while producing complex nature-based innovations that are inherently sustainable. Lo-TEK expands the definition of contemporary technology by rebuilding our understanding of climate resilient design using indigenous knowledge and practices that are sustainable, adaptable, and borne out of necessity. Indigenous people have learned to live symbiotically with their environments, especially water. This essay will explore the Kuttanad Kayalnilam Farming System by the Malayalis in India, the Sangjiyutang Mulberry Dyke and Fish Ponds in China, and the Ramli Lagoon farms in Ghar El Melh, Tunisia. These innovations are inherently resilient to the stresses of the climate and are multi-functional, symbiotic structures themselves. While not directly intended for protection from the new challenge of sea level rise, they can inform how we can build circular water systems that work with the environment, rather than disrupting it.

HEALTH insurance ,INSURANCE policies ,RANDOM forest algorithms - Abstract
In insurance, the surrender rate is an important variable that threatens the sustainability of insurers and determines the profitability of the contract. Unlike other actuarial assumptions that determine the cash flow of an insurance contract, however, it is characterized by endogenous variables such as people’s economic, social, and subjective decisions. Therefore, a microscopic approach is required to identify and analyze the factors that determine the lapse rate. Specifically, micro-level characteristics including the individual, demographic, microeconomic, and household characteristics of policyholders are necessary for the analysis. In this study, we select panel survey data of Korean Retirement Income Study (KReIS) with many diverse dimensions to determine which variables have a decisive effect on the lapse and apply the lasso regularized regression model to analyze it empirically. As the data contain many missing values, they are imputed using the random forest method. Among the household variables, we find that the non-existence of old dependents, the existence of young dependents, and employed family members increase the surrender rate. Among the individual variables, divorce, non-urban residential areas, apartment type of housing, non-ownership of homes, and bad relationship with siblings increase the lapse rate. Finally, among the financial variables, low income, low expenditure, the existence of children that incur child care expenditure, not expecting to bequest from spouse, not holding public health insurance, and expecting to benefit from a retirement pension increase the lapse rate. Some of these findings are consistent with those in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

45. La chiusura anoressica e i "restauri" nel campo: un'esperienza clinica.

- Abstract
The author, in reporting a clinical experience, retraces the therapeutic process reflecting on some events related to the somatic matrix of the analytical couple at work. The dyadic resonances activated in the field refer back to the implicit psychophysical dynamics of the mother/child dyad, being able to consider some "corporeal phenomena" as the corporeal basis of the transitional phenomena. In this third area the mother must allow herself to be "used" as a facilitating instrument of contact between external and internal reality. The analytical couple found themselves back at work after sixteen years: in the light of today's clinical experience and recent theorizations on bodily counter-transference, they looked at the analytical field and its dynamism connected to the temporal texture as a new dimension, an intersubjective third space in which surrender to it transforms and alchemies the themes and time of life. In this response to Sarah MacKian’s conference keynote I take a personal experience as point of departure: my almost lifelong engagement with Bach’s cantata Ich habe genug. This leads to a discussion of the relationship between music and spirit, and how we as researchers can approach experiences with this relationship. A theoretical model of four levels of meaning in music opens up a number of ways to understand the affordances and appropriations of ‘deep’, ‘strong’ or ‘spiritual’ music experiences to clinical and non-clinical listeners. Examples from theory and empirical research in the receptive music therapy model Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) are used to illustrate a development from a more static-content-oriented approach to a more dynamic-process and interpersonal understanding of spiritual/transpersonal experiences with music.

HUMANITARIAN law , *BUDDHISM , *COMBATANTS & noncombatants (International law) , *WAR , *RECIPROCITY theorems - Abstract
This article places international humanitarian law (IHL) side by side with Buddhist narratives as seen through the Jātakas, to investigate how they view the expectation placed on soldiers to risk their lives in battle. To this end, I delve into the notion of reciprocity of risk in battle from an IHL perspective, which I argue is crucial to infusing warfare with restraint. Similarly, Buddhism acknowledges the importance of reciprocity as an ethical principle that leads to non-violence. I demonstrate how IHL tries to ensure that the risk combatants undertake in combat is limited through its rule of surrender. I compare this argument with the Seyyaṃsa or Seyya Jātaka (no. 282), which illustrates the need to cease violence in cases of surrender. The way militaries treat their own combatants is crucial to the meaningful practice of surrender and thereby the limits and restraints of warfare. Buddhism too encourages rulers to value the lives of their soldiers and not to put their lives at unnecessary risk. I conclude that to maximise the combatant's choice to limit the risk he takes in battle, IHL should pay more attention to the orders that militaries and armed groups issue to their combatants. Buddhism, for its part, can facilitate the constructive use of military orders because it projects positive images of rulers who are reluctant to order their soldiers to take unnecessary risks in war. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of addiction, suicide, and surrender. Explored through a narrative inquiry lens, findings confirmed that the process of surrender is a crucial element in long-term recovery. Embracing the concept of surrender allows individuals living with addiction to gain control by giving up control, leading potentially to long-term recovery. Implications for treatment, both facility- and clinician-centric, are shared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WOMEN'S attitudes - Abstract
This paper introduces the Victorian era in Jude the Obscure of Hard showing a clear picture of English society. It critically studies how women are portrayed not the works of Hardy, particularly in Jude the Obscure. The paper questions not only the attitude of women, but also how women have been imaged in Jude the Obscure. The study immensely traces how women turn from revolutionary and rebellious to submissive. It attempts to answer some questions likewise, is it a search for a peaceful space or it is a compromising way to live among the monstrous society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
