Abstract

Soil fauna including earthworms play a crucial role in various ecosystem functions, thereby contributing to human well-being. The relationships between earthworm populations and environmental factors have frequently been established at regional scales, particularly in urban soils. However, the diversity and community assemblage of earthworms, as well as their influencing mechanism at plot scale, have rarely been studied. Based on the earthworm assemblage from 29 sites in 12 residential communities, the average earthworm abundance, biomass, and species richness were 59.0 individuals/m2, 21.7 ​g/m2, and 1.59 species, respectively. Based on a generalized linear mixed model, vegetation distribution pattern, vegetative cover type, and surrounding built environment all affected earthworm biomass. However, none of these residential variables significantly affected its community assemblage. Variation partitioning in canonical ordination revealed that edaphic properties, rather than landscapes, played a significant role in explaining the variation in its community assemblage, with an approximate contribution of 23%. The abundance and biomass of earthworms at the plot-scale in this study were consistent with previous studies at regional scales. However, the species richness at plot scale was lower than those at regional scale, suggesting that earthworm biodiversity may not accurately represent that at a larger scale, species-area relationship. The results indicate a shift in the driving factors of earthworm community assemblage from edaphic property variation at the plot scale to edaphic, historical, and biogeographical heterogeneities at the regional scale. Certain species that are sensitive to key edaphic/landscape parameters are potential candidates for monitoring soil ecological health.

Abstract

To provide baseline data on background radiation levels for the future assessment of the impact of nuclear and thermal power stations, a systematic study was carried out in the Mallipattinam ecosystem of Tamil Nadu, India. Mallipattinam is located between the Kudankulam and Kalpakkam nuclear power plants and near to Tuticorin thermal power plant. Water, sediments, seaweeds, crustaceans, molluscs, and fish were collected to measure the concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb. The concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb in most samples are comparable to values reported worldwide. In fish, the concentrations of (210)Po and (210)Pb are in the range 16-190 Bq kg(-1) and 8-153 Bq kg(-1), respectively. Abstract

The present study mainly aims to determine whether the water treatment process is microbiologically feasible to reduce the microbial load and safe for consumption. The work was focused on four water treatment plants (WTP’s) supplying drinking water to Mysore urban city (Karnataka, India). A total of 144 samples were collected and analyzed during three seasons (December 2011 to August 2013) for microbiological and physico-chemical parameters. Water samples were collected from different stages of treatment such as raw water, stage-1 (coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation), stage-2 (filtration), and finally water from four WTP’s. In this study most probable number method to assess the microbiological water quality and heterotrophic plate count (HPC) was used to assess microbial load reduction in different stages of treatment. The result of the study indicates that treated water samples pH values were within the permissible range of World Health Organization (WHO). The reduction of turbidity for treated water samples were in the range of 0.6–1.3 NTU. The average residual chlorine level for treated water ranges from 0.5 to 0.8 mg/l. The results of HPC in raw water were moderately high during monsoon season compared to other seasons for all WTP’s. The treatment plants showed that there were not much variation in raw water and stage-1 water (coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation). The significant level of reduction occurs in stage-2 (filtration). The final water was clear due to the application of chlorination process. For all seasons the MPN count of treated water was zero. The treated water values are within permissible limit recommended by WHO. 28. Bioaccumulation and human exposure of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in vegetables from the largest vegetable production base of China

Abstract

This study investigated perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in edible parts of vegetables, soils, and irrigation water in greenhouse and open filed, for the first time, in Shouguang city, the largest vegetable production base in China, which is located nearby a fluorochemical industrial park (FIP). The bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were calculated, and the human exposures of PFAAs via consumption of the vegetables for different age groups assuming the maximum levels detected in each vegetable and average consumption rates were also estimated. The ΣPFAA levels ranged from 1.67 to 33.5 ng/g dry weight (dw) in the edible parts of all the vegetables, with perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) being the dominant compound with an average contribution of 49% to the ΣPFAA level. The leafy vegetables showed higher ΣPFAA levels (average 8.76 ng/g dw) than the fruit and root vegetables. For all the vegetables, the log10 BAF values of perfluorinated carboxylic acids showed a decreasing trend with increasing chain length, with PFBA having the highest log10 BAF values (average 0.98). Cabbage had higher bioaccumulation of PFBA (log10 BAF 1.24) than other vegetables. For the greenhouse soils and vegetables, the average contribution of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to ΣPFAA was lower than that in the open field samples, while the contributions of PFBA, PFHxA, PFPeA to ΣPFAA were higher. Irrigation water may be an important source of PFAAs in greenhouse, while for open field vegetables and soils, atmospheric deposition may be an additional contamination pathway. The estimated maximum exposure to PFOA through vegetable consumption for urban preschool children (aged 2–5 years) was 63% of the reference dose set by the European Food Safety Authority. Suggestions are also provided for mitigating the health risks of human exposure to PFAAs. Abstract

Introduction: Phosphorus (P) is an essential element in food production. P consumption is increasing over the years due to increasing population and increasing demand for agricultural yields. Managing the agricultural P through the understanding of bioavailability, transport, and runoff will maximize the soil productivity and minimize the environmental effects. Efficient management in agriculture, governance, and lack of integrated international governance need to be addressed to overcome the P scarcity issue. Results and Discussions: This article is focusing one such efficient management of P resource addressing the major portion of phosphorus which is unnoticed in agricultural residues, manures, and other sources. Increasing cost of phosphate fertilizer, a scarcity of high-quality phosphate rock (PR), and increasing surface water pollution are driving a need to accelerate the recovery and reuse of phosphorus (P) from various waste sectors. Options to recover P occur all along the open P cycle from mining to households to oceans. However, P recovery as a regional and global strategy toward P sustainability and future food, bio energy, and water security are in its infancy because of a number of technological, socioeconomic, and institutional constraints. Resolving these constraints requires concerted collaboration between relevant stakeholders and an integrated approach combining successful business models with socioeconomic and institutional changes.

Abstract

Abstract: A systematic study on the natural radionuclides such as 210Po and 210Pb in the environmental matrices of Point Calimere ecosystem has been undertaken to establish a baseline data on the radiation profile of Point Calimere environment. The environmental samples such as water, sediment and biota (seaweeds, crustaceans, molluscs and fish) have been subjected to analyses. It has been observed that the concentration of 210Po and 210Pb in the water samples of Point Calimere to be 0.5mBq/l and 1.3mBq/l, respectively. The soft tissues of the organisms accumulated higher 210Po content while shells and bones contained more 210Pb. The bivalve molluscs Meretrix casta have been identified to accumulate higher concentration of 210Po suggesting that they could serve as bio-indicator of radionuclides like 210Po in the Point Calimere ecosystem. The concentration factor of 210Po for the biotic components ranged from ∼103 to 106 while for 210Pb it ranged from ∼103 to 105. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
