Abstract

Model predictive control (MPC) is a method to formulate the optimal scheduling problem for grid flexibilities in a mathematical manner. The resulting time-constrained optimization problem can be re-solved in each optimization time step using classical optimization methods such as Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) or Interior Point Methods (IPOPT). When applying MPC in a rolling horizon scheme, the impact of uncertainty in forecasts on the optimal schedule is reduced. While MPC methods promise accurate results for time-constrained grid optimization they are inherently limited by the calculation time needed for large and complex power system models. Learning the optimal control behaviour using function approximation offers the possibility to determine near-optimal control actions with short calculation time. A Neural Predictive Control (NPC) scheme is proposed to learn optimal control policies for linear and nonlinear power systems through imitation. It is demonstrated that this procedure can find near-optimal solutions, while reducing the calculation time by an order of magnitude. 4. Distributed AC-DC Optimal Power Flow in the European Transmission Grid with ADMM

Abstract

Distributed or multi-area optimal power flow appears to be promising in order to cope with computational burdens in large-scale grids and without the regional system operators losing control over their respective areas. However, algorithms are usually tested either in small test cases or single countries. We present a realistic case study in the interconnected European transmission grid with over 5000 buses and 315 GW load. The grid is partitioned into 24 areas which correspond to the respective single countries. We use a full alternating current model and integrate multi-terminal direct current systems. The decomposed problem is solved via a modified Alternating Direction of Multipliers Method (ADMM), in which the single countries only exchange border node information with each neighbor. In terms of generation costs, the solution of the distributed optimal power flow problem deviates only 0.02% from a centrally computed one. Consensus between all regions is reached before 200 iterations, which is remarkable in such a large system.

7. Power-to-Frequency Dependency of Residential Loads in a Wider Frequency Range: An Experimental Investigation

Abstract

With decreasing rotational inertia from traditional synchronous generation, frequency is becoming more volatile. Hence, a closer assessment of frequency-dependent load behavior is required. This paper presents an experimental investigation for residential loads, including sixteen typical domestic appliances. The perturbation-based method (range 50±1 Hz) is applied to determine frequency sensitivity values as parameters for commonly used exponential and linear frequency-dependent load models. Subsequently, these models with their identified parameters are compared with the measured load behavior of four representative devices during dynamic and steady-state frequency variations. The comparison shows a significant increase in the reconstruction error beyond the 50±1 Hz range, which suggests that the model parameters identified for a small frequency range may not be the most effective for larger frequency variations. The experimental study presented in this paper also includes a PV inverter as a representative of the increasing number of distributed generator and storage systems. The frequency-dependent behavior of such systems is defined in grid codes in some countries (e.g. VDE-AR-N 4105 in Germany). The measured response from the PV inverter under test shows that there is a non-negligible response delay time, and thus modeling approaches must be upgraded in the future.

Abstract

The papers presented in this open access book address diverse challenges in decarbonizing energy systems, ranging from operational to investment planning problems, from market economics to technical and environmental considerations, from distribution grids to transmission grids, and from theoretical considerations to data provision concerns and applied case studies. While most papers have a clear methodological focus, they address policy-relevant questions at the same time. The target audience therefore includes academics and experts in industry as well as policy makers, who are interested in state-of-the-art quantitative modelling of policy relevant problems in energy systems. The 2nd International Symposium on Energy System Optimization (ISESO 2018) was held at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) under the symposium theme “Bridging the Gap Between Mathematical Modelling and Policy Support” on October 10th and 11th 2018. ISESO 2018 was organized by the KIT, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS), the Heidelberg University, the German Aerospace Center and the University of Stuttgart.

Abstract

In this contribution, measurement data of phase, neutral, and ground currents from real low voltage (LV) feeders in Germany is presented and analyzed. The data obtained is used to review and evaluate common modeling approaches for LV systems. An alternative modeling approach for detailed cable and ground modeling, which allows for the consideration of typical German LV earthing conditions and asymmetrical cable design, is proposed. Further, analytical calculation methods for model parameters are described and compared to laboratory measurement results of real LV cables. The models are then evaluated in terms of parameter sensitivity and parameter relevance, focusing on the influence of conventionally performed simplifications, such as neglecting house junction cables, shunt admittances, or temperature dependencies. By comparing measurement data from a real LV feeder to simulation results, the proposed modeling approach is validated.

Abstract

In many algorithmic applications in electrical power grids, state estimation (SE) represents the first step of a process chain. In SE, sensor measurements are processed to infer the most probable grid state. Classical methods such as weighted least squares (WLSs) based approaches use statistical methods that can be based on sensor noise and erroneous measurements. With these methods, only point estimates are made, which results in a lack of knowledge about prediction uncertainties. In this study, machine-learning-based methods for determining the actual state of the grid are proposed. Bayesian optimisation is applied to find the optimal hyperparameter configurations for neural networks (NNs) for SE tasks. The application of Bayesian inference using Bayesian NNs is proposed, which allows the prediction of point estimates as well as uncertainty intervals for the system states. The advantages of using Bayesian approaches in comparison to classical SE methods like WLS are shown.

Abstract

An optimal power flow algorithm for unbalanced three-phase distribution grids is presented in this paper as a new tool for grid planning on low voltage level. As additional equipment like electric vehicles, heat pumps or solar power systems can sometimes cause unbalanced power flows, existing algorithms have to be adapted. In comparison to algorithms considering balanced power flows, the presented algorithm uses a complete model of a three-phase four-wire low voltage grid. Additionally, a constraint for the voltage unbalance in the grid is introduced. The algorithm can be used to optimize the operation of energy storage systems in unbalanced systems. The used grid model, constraints, objective function and solver are explained in detail. A validation of the algorithm using a commercial tool is done. Additionally, three exemplary optimizations are performed to show possible applications for this tool.

Abstract

Electric vehicle charging stresses distribution grids significantly with high penetrations of electric vehicles. This will lead to grid reinforcement works in several distribution grids. Battery storage is a possible solution to bypass times of grid reinforcement due to electric vehicle charging. In this paper, different operation strategies for such a battery storage are tested at first in simulations. The main difference between the strategies is the necessary input data. Following the simulations, selected strategies are tested in reality in the project &rdquo, Netzlabor E-Mobility-Allee&rdquo, It is proved that battery storage is a functioning possibility to bypass times of grid reinforcement.
