The book at hand covers many of the different classes of topography/profilometry, and will give the reader an overview of different aspects of current profilometric methods. The intent is to show the possibilities, the state-of-the-art and some recent advances in the field by bringing together a non-exhaustive but diverse selection of profilometric methods. Some methods are fresh and unique like the one pixel profilometer or the sampling moiré method. Others are more consolidated, like Fourier transform profilometry but now in real-time, and even commercially available, like the newest time-of-flight cameras for 3D vision. The techniques in this book range from projection moiré to binary dithering pattern projection to areal surface mapping. They include an endoscopic implementation to an omnidirectional vision system and techniques using Fourier analysis to time-of-flight principles. Also, techniques applicable in biomedicine to engineering applications. Even from atomic force microscopy to optical coherence tomography, both used as topographical means. Finally, some in-depth specialist reviews are included of new profilometric methods or new commercial profilometric devices. The book contains 12 chapters from selected authors from all over the world considered authorities in their field. The individual chapters are written to give a thorough introduction to each respective topographic method, and include a lot of background and abundant references, so that the book serves as a good introduction or reference.

The idea for this book stemmed from a remark by Philip Jennings of Murdoch University in a discussion session following a regular meeting of the Australian Surface Science group. He observed that a text on surface analysis and applica­ tions to materials suitable for final year undergraduate and postgraduate science students was not currently available. Furthermore, the members of the Australian Surface Science group had the research experience and range of coverage of sur­ face analytical techniques and applications to provide a text for this purpose. A of techniques and applications to be included was agreed at that meeting. The list intended readership of the book has been broadened since the early discussions, particularly to encompass industrial users, but there has been no significant alter­ ation in content. The editors, in consultation with the contributors, have agreed that the book should be prepared for four major groups of readers: - senior undergraduate students in chemistry, physics, metallurgy, materials science and materials engineering; - postgraduate students undertaking research that involves the use of analytical techniques; - groups of scientists and engineers attending training courses and workshops on the application of surface analytical techniques in materials science; - industrial scientists and engineers in research and development seeking a description of available surface analytical techniques and guidance on the most appropriate techniques for particular applications. The contributors mostly come from Australia, with the notable exception of Ray Browning from Stanford University.

Since the development of AES and XPS in the late 1960s and early 1970s there have been great strides forward in the sensitivities and resolutions of the instrumentation. The function of a component part can be profoundly affected by its surface topography. There are many examples in nature of surfaces that have a well-controlled topography to affect their function. Examples include the hydrophobic effect of the lotus leaf, the reduction of fluid drag due to the riblet structure of shark skin, the directional adhesion of the gecko foot and the angular sensitivity of the multi-faceted fly eye. Surface structuring is also being used extensively in modern manufacturing. In this way many properties can be altered, for example optical, tribological, biological and fluidic. Previously, single line (profile) measurements were adequate to control manufacture of surfaces, but as the need to control the functionality of surfaces increases, there is a growing need for three-dimensional (areal) measurement and characterisation techniques. For this reason there has been considerable research, development and standardisation of areal techniques. This book will present the areal framework that is being adopted by the international community. Whereas previous books have concentrated on the measurement aspects, this book concentrates on the characterisation techniques, i.e. how to interpret the measurement data to give the appropriate (functional) information for a given task. The book describes the experimental techniques employed to study surfaces and interfaces. The emphasis is on the experimental method. Therefore all chapters start with an introduction of the scientific problem, the theory necessary to understand how the technique works and how to understand the results. Descriptions of real experimental setups, experimental results at different systems are given to show both the strength and the limits of the technique. At first sight, dental composites and atomic/nuclear surface analysis methods seem to belong to remote, hardly overlapping fields. However, at a closer look certain similar patterns may be evidenced in their evolution. They both were born about half a century ago, but nonetheless they both are driven by unexhausted innovation and continue to develop at high rates. It is therefore not surprising that the applications of these physical analysis techniques in the field of dental composite research during the last decade yielded valuable results. Biosensors are finding increasing applications in different areas. Over the last few years the areas where biosensors may be used effectively has increased dramatically. This book like the previous four books on analyte-receptor binding and dissociation kinetics by this author addresses the often neglected area. The kinetics of binding and dissociation in solution to appropriate receptors immobilized on biosensor surfaces occurs under diffusional limitations on structured surfaces. The receptors immobilized on the biosensor surface contribute to the degree of heterogeneity on the sensor chip surface.The fractal analysis examples presented throughout the book provide a convenient means to make quantitative the degree of heterogeneity present on the sensor surface, and relates it to the binding and dissociation rate coefficients.
