Search

Radio searches for extraterrestrial intelligence have mainly targeted the discovery of narrowband continuous-wave beacons and artificially dispersed broadband bursts. Periodic pulse trains, in comparison to the above technosignature morphologies, offer an energetically efficient means of interstellar transmission. A rotating beacon at the Galactic Center (GC), in particular, would be highly advantageous for galaxy-wide communications. Here, we present blipss, a CPU-based open-source software that uses a fast folding algorithm (FFA) to uncover channel-wide periodic signals in radio dynamic spectra. Running blipss on 4.5 hours of 4-8 GHz data gathered with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, we searched the central 6' of our Galaxy for kHz-wide signals with periods between 11-100 s and duty cycles ($\delta$) between 10-50%. Our searches, to our knowledge, constitute the first FFA exploration for periodic alien technosignatures. We report a non-detection of channel-wide periodic signals in our data. Thus, we constrain the abundance of 4-8 GHz extraterrestrial transmitters of kHz-wide periodic pulsed signals to fewer than one in about 600,000 stars at the GC above a 7$\sigma$ equivalent isotropic radiated power of $\approx 2 \times 10^{18}$ W at $\delta \simeq 10\%$. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence at radio frequencies has largely been focused on continuous-wave narrowband signals. We demonstrate that broadband pulsed beacons are energetically efficient compared to narrowband beacons over longer operational timescales. Here, we report the first extensive survey searching for such broadband pulsed beacons towards 1883 stars as a part of the Breakthrough Listen's search for advanced intelligent life. We conducted 233 hours of deep observations across 4 to 8 GHz using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope and searched for three different classes of signals with artificial (or negative) dispersion. We report a detailed search -- leveraging a convolutional neural network classifier on high-performance GPUs -- deployed for the very first time in a large-scale search for signals from extraterrestrial intelligence. Due to the absence of any signal-of-interest from our survey, we place a constraint on the existence of broadband pulsed beacons in our solar neighborhood: $\lesssim$1 in 1000 stars have transmitter power-densities $\gtrsim$10$^5$ W/Hz repeating $\leq$500 seconds at these frequencies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Galactic Center (GC), with its high density of massive stars, is a promising target for radio transient searches. In particular, the discovery and timing of a pulsar orbiting the central supermassive black hole (SMBH) of our Galaxy will enable stringent strong-field tests of gravity and accurate measurements of SMBH properties. We performed multi-epoch 4-8 GHz observations of the inner $\approx$ 15 pc of our Galaxy using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in 2019 August-September. Our investigations constitute the most sensitive 4-8 GHz GC pulsar survey conducted to date, reaching down to a 6.1 GHz pseudo-luminosity threshold of $\approx$ 1 mJy kpc$^2$ for a pulse duty cycle of 2.5$\%$. We searched our data in the Fourier domain for periodic signals incorporating a constant or linearly changing line-of-sight pulsar acceleration. We report the successful detection of the GC magnetar PSR J1745$-$2900 in our data. Our pulsar searches yielded a non-detection of novel periodic astrophysical emissions above a 6$\sigma$ detection threshold in harmonic-summed power spectra. We reconcile our non-detection of GC pulsars with inadequate sensitivity to a likely GC pulsar population dominated by millisecond pulsars. Alternatively, close encounters with compact objects in the dense GC environment may scatter pulsars away from the GC. Radio magnetars are exotic sources noted for their diverse spectro-temporal phenomenology and pulse profile variations over weeks to months. Unusual for radio magnetars, the Galactic Center (GC) magnetar $\rm PSR~J1745-2900$ has been continually active since its discovery in 2013. We monitored the GC magnetar at $\rm 4-8~GHz$ for 6 hours in August$-$September 2019 using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. During our observations, the GC magnetar emitted a flat fluence spectrum over $\rm 5-8~GHz$ to within $2\sigma$ uncertainty. From our data, we estimate a $\rm 6.4~GHz$ period-averaged flux density, $\overline{S}_{6.4} \approx (240 \pm 5)~\mu$Jy. Tracking the temporal evolution of $\overline{S}_{6.4}$, we infer a gradual weakening of GC magnetar activity during $2016-2019$ relative to that between $2013-2015.5$. Typical single pulses detected in our study reveal marginally resolved sub-pulses with opposing spectral indices, a feature characteristic of radio magnetars but unseen in rotation-powered pulsars. However, unlike in fast radio bursts, these sub-pulses exhibit no perceptible radio frequency drifts. Throughout our observing span, $\rm \simeq 5~ms$ scattered pulses significantly jitter within two stable emission components of widths, $\rm 220~ms$ and $\rm 140~ms$, respectively, in the average pulse profile., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, published in ApJ

The possible origin of millisecond bursts from the giant elliptical galaxy M87 has been scrutinized since the earliest searches for extragalactic fast radio transients undertaken in the late 1970s. Motivated by rapid technological advancements in recent years, we conducted $\rm \simeq 10~hours$ of L-band ($\rm 1.15-1.75~GHz$) observations of the core of M87 with the Arecibo radio telescope in 2019. Adopting a matched filtering approach, we searched our data for single pulses using trial dispersion measures up to $\rm 5500~pc~cm^{-3}$ and burst durations between $\rm 0.3-123~ms$. We find no evidence of astrophysical bursts in our data above a 7$\sigma$ detection threshold. Our observations thus constrain the burst rate from M87 to $\rm \lesssim 0.1~bursts~hr^{-1}$ above $\rm 1.4~Jy~ms$, the most stringent upper limit obtained to date. Our non-detection of radio bursts is consistent with expectations of giant pulse emission from a Crab-like young neutron star population in M87. However, the dense, strongly magnetized interstellar medium surrounding the central $\sim 10^9 \ M_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole of M87 may potentially harbor magnetars that can emit detectable radio bursts during their flaring states., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, published in ApJ

A line-of-sight towards the Galactic Center (GC) offers the largest number of potentially habitable systems of any direction in the sky. The Breakthrough Listen program is undertaking the most sensitive and deepest targeted SETI surveys towards the GC. Here, we outline our observing strategies with Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and Parkes telescope to conduct 600 hours of deep observations across 0.7--93 GHz. We report preliminary results from our survey for ETI beacons across 1--8 GHz with 7.0 and 11.2 hours of observations with Parkes and GBT, respectively. With our narrowband drifting signal search, we were able to place meaningful constraints on ETI transmitters across 1--4 GHz and 3.9--8 GHz with EIRP limits of $\geq$4$\times$10$^{18}$ W among 60 million stars and $\geq$5$\times$10$^{17}$ W among half a million stars, respectively. For the first time, we were able to constrain the existence of artificially dispersed transient signals across 3.9--8 GHz with EIRP $\geq$1$\times$10$^{14}$ W/Hz with a repetition period $\leq$4.3 hours. We also searched our 11.2 hours of deep observations of the GC and its surrounding region for Fast Radio Burst-like magnetars with the DM up to 5000 pc cm$^{-3}$ with maximum pulse widths up to 90 ms at 6 GHz. We detected several hundred transient bursts from SGR J1745$-$2900, but did not detect any new transient burst with the peak luminosity limit across our observed band of $\geq$10$^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and burst-rate of $\geq$0.23 burst-hr$^{-1}$. The nearby star $\rm \epsilon \ Eridani$ has been a frequent target of radio surveys for stellar emission and extraterrestial intelligence. Using deep $\rm 2-4 \ GHz$ observations with the Very Large Array, we have uncovered a $29 \ \mu {\rm Jy}$ compact, steady continuum radio source coincident with $\rm \epsilon \ Eridani$ to within 0.06 arcseconds ($\lesssim 2\sigma$; 0.2 au at the distance of the star). Combining our data with previous high frequency continuum detections of $\rm \epsilon \ Eridani$, our observations reveal a spectral turnover at $\rm 6 \ GHz$. We ascribe the $\rm 2-6 \ GHz$ emission to optically thick, thermal gyroresonance radiation from the stellar corona, with thermal free-free opacity likely becoming relevant at frequencies below $\rm 1 \ GHz$. The steep spectral index ($\alpha \simeq 2$) of the $\rm 2-6 \ GHz$ spectrum strongly disfavors its interpretation as stellar wind-associated thermal bremsstrahlung ($\alpha \simeq 0.6$). Attributing the entire observed $\rm 2-4 \ GHz$ flux density to thermal free-free wind emission, we thus, derive a stringent upper limit of $3 \times 10^{-11} \ M_{\odot} \ {\rm yr}^{-1}$ on the mass loss rate from $\rm \epsilon \ Eridani$. Finally, we report the non-detection of flares in our data above a $5\sigma$ threshold of $\rm 95 \ \mu Jy$. The increasing availability of cloud computing services for science has changed the way scientific code can be developed, deployed, and run. Many modern scientific workflows are capable of running on cloud computing resources. Consequently, there is an increasing interest in the scientific computing community in methods, tools, and implementations that enable moving an application to the cloud and simplifying the process, and decreasing the time to meaningful scientific results. In this paper, we have applied the concepts of containerization for portability and multi-cloud automated deployment with industry-standard tools to three scientific workflows. We show how our implementations provide reduced complexity to portability of both the applications themselves, and their deployment across private and public clouds. Each application has been packaged in a Docker container with its dependencies and necessary environment setup for production runs. Terraform and Ansible have been used to automate the provisioning of compute resources and the deployment of each scientific application in a Multi-VM cluster. Each application has been deployed on the AWS and Aristotle Cloud Federation platforms. Variation in data management constraints, Multi-VM MPI communication, and embarrassingly parallel instance deployments were all explored and reported on. Birefringence in ionized, magnetized media is usually measured as Faraday rotation of linearly polarized radiation. However, pulses propagating through regions with very large Faraday rotation measures (RMs) can split into circularly polarized components with measurable differences in arrival times $\propto \nu^{-3}\, \rm RM$, where $\nu$ is the radio frequency. Differential refraction from gradients in DM (dispersion measure) and RM can contribute a splitting time $\propto \vert \mathbf{\nabla_{\perp}} \rm DM \vert \vert \mathbf{\nabla_{\perp}}\rm RM \vert\,\nu^{-5}$. Regardless of whether the emitted pulse is unpolarized or linearly polarized, net circular polarization will be measured when splitting is a significant fraction of the pulse width. However, the initial polarization may be inferable from the noise statistics of the bursts. Extreme multipath scattering that broadens pulses can mask splitting effects. We discuss particular cases such as the Galactic center magnetar, J1749$-$2900, and the repeating fast radio burst source, FRB 121102. Both lines of sight have $\rm RM \sim 10^5~\rm rad~m^{-2}$ that yields millisecond splittings at frequencies well below $\sim 1 \text{ GHz}$. We also consider the splitting of nanosecond shot pulses in giant pulses from the Crab pulsar and the minimal effects of birefringence on precision pulsar timing. Low radio frequency solar observations using the Murchison Widefield Array have recently revealed the presence of numerous weak, short-lived and narrow-band emission features, even during moderately quiet solar conditions. These non-thermal features occur at rates of many thousands per hour in the 30.72 MHz observing bandwidth, and hence, necessarily require an automated approach for their detection and characterization. Here, we employ continuous wavelet transform using a mother Ricker wavelet for feature detection from the dynamic spectrum. We establish the efficacy of this approach and present the first statistically robust characterization of the properties of these features. In particular, we examine distributions of their peak flux densities, spectral spans, temporal spans and peak frequencies. We can reliably detect features weaker than 1 SFU, making them, to the best of our knowledge, the weakest bursts reported in literature. The distribution of their peak flux densities follows a power law with an index of -2.23 in the 12-155 SFU range, implying that they can provide an energetically significant contribution to coronal and chromospheric heating. These features typically last for 1-2 seconds and possess bandwidths of about 4-5 MHz. Their occurrence rate remains fairly flat in the 140-210 MHz frequency range. At the time resolution of the data, they appear as stationary bursts, exhibiting no perceptible frequency drift.
