1. The Mediating Role of Reading Attitude in the Relationship between Elementary School Students' Reading Engagement and Reading Comprehension Skills

Abstract: This study aimed to examine the effect of reading attitude and reading engagement on reading skills success and the mediating role of reading attitude in the relationship between reading engagement and reading comprehension skills. The data for this research was collected in the spring of 2021. The "Reading Success Scale," "Reading Engagement Scale," and "Reading Attitude Scale" were applied to 491 students from the Central Anatolia region in Turkey. The TAP and IBM SPSS 24 software were used to analyze data obtained from the scales used in the study, while the macro mediation test Process 3.5.3 developed by Hayes (2018) was used to measure the mediators in the study. A mediating role model was established in the study to evaluate the hypotheses. The study revealed that reading engagement affects reading comprehension significantly and positively; reading attitude does not have a significant effect on reading comprehension; reading engagement affects reading attitude significantly and positively; and that, in the absence of reading attitude, reading engagement has a positive and significant effect on reading success The study further revealed that engagement in reading accounts for approximately 21% of the variation in reading attitude. In conclusion, the study suggests further exploration of the roles played by different variables in mediating the relationship between reading engagement and reading comprehension success.

2. Cubic Dirac Semimetals: General Theory and Application to Rare-Earth Magnets

Abstract: Rare-earth magnets with parent cubic symmetry exhibit unique topological properties. However, the origin of these behaviors remains presently unclear. Here, we develop minimal models for Dirac semimetals (DSMs) with accidental band crossings and higher-order topology in cubic systems, incorporating candidate magnetic order to analyze bulk, surface, and hinge state characteristics. In certain cubic-symmetric DSMs, we identify an effective Z2 chiral symmetry which significantly impacts surface and hinge-localized states. Our results highlight distinct features in surface state dispersions, Fermi arcs, polarization dependence, and band splitting that correlate with photoemission data in rare-earth monopnictides. We also suggest candidate materials and experimental tests for further validation. These findings advance our understanding of surface states in rare-earth magnets with parent cubic symmetries and illuminate the role of DSM physics in these systems., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

3. Sensing multiatom networks in cavities via photon-induced excitation resonance

Abstract: We explore the distribution in space and time of a single-photon excitation shared by a network of dipole-dipole interacting atoms that are also coupled to a common photonic field mode. Time-averaged distributions reveal partial trapping of the excitation near the initially excited atom. This trapping is associated with resonances of the excitation at crossing points of the photon-dressed energy eigenvalues of the network. The predicted photon-induced many-atom trapped excitation (PIMATE) is sensitive to atomic position disorder which broadens the excitation resonances and transforms them to avoided crossings. PIMATE is shown to allow highly effective and accurate sensing of multi-atom networks and their disorder.

5. Data-Driven Distributed Common Operational Picture from Heterogeneous Platforms using Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Abstract: The integration of unmanned platforms equipped with advanced sensors promises to enhance situational awareness and mitigate the "fog of war" in military operations. However, managing the vast influx of data from these platforms poses a significant challenge for Command and Control (C2) systems. This study presents a novel multi-agent learning framework to address this challenge. Our method enables autonomous and secure communication between agents and humans, which in turn enables real-time formation of an interpretable Common Operational Picture (COP). Each agent encodes its perceptions and actions into compact vectors, which are then transmitted, received and decoded to form a COP encompassing the current state of all agents (friendly and enemy) on the battlefield. Using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), we jointly train COP models and agent's action selection policies. We demonstrate resilience to degraded conditions such as denied GPS and disrupted communications. Experimental validation is performed in the Starcraft-2 simulation environment to evaluate the precision of the COPs and robustness of policies. We report less than 5% error in COPs and policies resilient to various adversarial conditions. In summary, our contributions include a method for autonomous COP formation, increased resilience through distributed prediction, and joint training of COP models and multi-agent RL policies. 6. Jupiter Evolutionary Models Incorporating Stably Stratified Regions

Abstract: We address the issue of which broad set of initial conditions for the planet Jupiter best matches the current presence of a ``fuzzy core" of heavy elements, while at the same time comporting with measured parameters such as its effective temperature, atmospheric helium abundance, radius, and atmospheric metallicity. Our focus is on the class of fuzzy cores that can survive convective mixing to the present day and on the unique challenges of an inhomogeneous Jupiter with stably-stratified regions now demanded by the \textit{Juno} gravity data. Hence, using the new code \texttt{APPLE}, we attempt to put a non-adiabatic Jupiter into an evolutionary context. This requires not only a mass density model, the major relevant byproduct of the \textit{Juno} data, but a thermal model that is subject to interior heat transport, a realistic atmospheric flux boundary, a helium rain algorithm, and the latest equation of state. 7. Fostering Community of Inquiry in Public-Private English Language University Settings in Kurdistan (Iraq)

Abstract: At two higher education institutions in Kurdistan (Iraq), English as foreign language (EFL) programs aim to provide adult learners with language skills development that they need to excel in their majors and as professionals. A framework called the Community of Inquiry (COI), based on interactionist and constructivist-learning theories was used to create a needs analysis tool to inform the design, delivery, and evaluation of a collaborative mini-conference hosted by the two institutions during and post-COVID pandemic. The current study explores the use of the needs assessment, which measured instructors' beliefs following the sudden transition to online learning during the pandemic, and their awareness of principles of teaching and learning for EFL learners in particular within the context of Kurdistan Iraq. There are opportunities in and beyond the current setting to address issues of equity, capacity for integrating tech skills with pedagogy, and more empathy between public and private institutions of higher education that support EFL learners. The study gathered critical evidence through qualitative and quantitative research methods that assessed institutional, faculty, and student needs during the transition of online learning.

8. Measurement of Basic Psychological Needs for Physical Activity Participation for College Students with Intellectual Disabilities: A Validation Study

Abstract: Background: Measurement instruments to understand self-determined motivation towards physical activity among college students with intellectual disabilities are needed to develop programs to support physical and psychological health and well-being. The purpose of the current study was to validate a modified questionnaire measuring basic psychological needs towards physical activity among college students with intellectual disabilities. Methods: A total of 108 college students with intellectual disabilities completed the modified questionnaire. Validity and reliability of the questionnaire was examined. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a six-factor model had good model fit. Cronbach's alpha values showed acceptable reliability evidence of the instrument as a whole, although some alpha values in subdomains of the instrument were below acceptable values. Conclusion: The modified questionnaire was found to have acceptable validity evidence. Further studies are needed with refinement of answer options and the addition of more questions to increase reliability.

9. Superconductivity in twisted WSe$_2$ from topology-induced quantum fluctuations

Abstract: Recently, superconductivity has been observed in twisted WSe$_2$ moir\'{e} structures (Xia et al., arXiv:2405.14784; Guo et al., arXiv:2406.03418). Its transition temperature is high, reaching a few percent of the Fermi temperature scale. Here, we advance a mechanism for superconductivity based on the notion that electronic topology enables quantum fluctuations in a suitable regime of intermediate correlations. In this regime, the Coulomb interaction requires that an active topological flat band and nearby wider bands are considered together. Compact molecular orbitals arise, which experience quantum fluctuations through topology-dictated hybridization with the other molecular orbitals. The hybridization competes with the active flat band' natural tendency towards static electronic ordering, thereby weakening the latter; we link this effect with certain salient observations by experiments. Furthermore, the competition yields a quantum critical regime where quasiparticles are lost. The corresponding quantum critical fluctuations drive superconductivity. 10. ML-CrAIST: Multi-scale Low-high Frequency Information-based Cross black Attention with Image Super-resolving Transformer

Abstract: Recently, transformers have captured significant interest in the area of single-image super-resolution tasks, demonstrating substantial gains in performance. Current models heavily depend on the network's extensive ability to extract high-level semantic details from images while overlooking the effective utilization of multi-scale image details and intermediate information within the network. Furthermore, it has been observed that high-frequency areas in images present significant complexity for super-resolution compared to low-frequency areas. This work proposes a transformer-based super-resolution architecture called ML-CrAIST that addresses this gap by utilizing low-high frequency information in multiple scales. Unlike most of the previous work (either spatial or channel), we operate spatial and channel self-attention, which concurrently model pixel interaction from both spatial and channel dimensions, exploiting the inherent correlations across spatial and channel axis. Further, we devise a cross-attention block for super-resolution, which explores the correlations between low and high-frequency information. Quantitative and qualitative assessments indicate that our proposed ML-CrAIST surpasses state-of-the-art super-resolution methods (e.g., 0.15 dB gain @Manga109 $\times$4). 11. Harnessing Multi-resolution and Multi-scale Attention for Underwater Image Restoration

Abstract: Underwater imagery is often compromised by factors such as color distortion and low contrast, posing challenges for high-level vision tasks. Recent underwater image restoration (UIR) methods either analyze the input image at full resolution, resulting in spatial richness but contextual weakness, or progressively from high to low resolution, yielding reliable semantic information but reduced spatial accuracy. Here, we propose a lightweight multi-stage network called Lit-Net that focuses on multi-resolution and multi-scale image analysis for restoring underwater images while retaining original resolution during the first stage, refining features in the second, and focusing on reconstruction in the final stage. Our novel encoder block utilizes parallel $1\times1$ convolution layers to capture local information and speed up operations. Further, we incorporate a modified weighted color channel-specific $l_1$ loss ($cl_1$) function to recover color and detail information. Extensive experimentations on publicly available datasets suggest our model's superiority over recent state-of-the-art methods, with significant improvement in qualitative and quantitative measures, such as $29.477$ dB PSNR ($1.92\%$ improvement) and $0.851$ SSIM ($2.87\%$ improvement) on the EUVP dataset. The contributions of Lit-Net offer a more robust approach to underwater image enhancement and super-resolution, which is of considerable importance for underwater autonomous vehicles and surveillance. 12. Coupling between electrons and charge density wave fluctuation and its possible role in superconductivity

Abstract: In most of charge density wave (CDW) systems of different material classes, ranging from traditional correlated systems in low-dimension to recent topological systems with Kagome lattice, superconductivity emerges when the system is driven toward the quantum critical point (QCP) of CDW via external parameters of doping and pressure. Despite this rather universal trend, the essential hinge between CDW and superconductivity has not been established yet. Here, the evidence of coupling between electron and CDW fluctuation is reported, based on a temperature- and intercalation-dependent kink in the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of 2H-PdxTaSe2. Kinks are observed only when the system is in the CDW phase, regardless of whether a long- or short-range order is established. Notably, the coupling strength is enhanced upon long-range CDW suppression, albeit the coupling energy scale is reduced. Interestingly, estimation of the superconducting critical temperature by incorporating the observed coupling characteristics into McMillan's equation yields result closely resembling the known values of the superconducting dome. Our results thus highlight a compelling possibility that this new coupling mediates Cooper pairs, which provides new insights on the competing relationship not only for CDW, but also for other competing orders., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures for the main text. 13. Probing the Morphology of Polarized Emission Induced by Fluctuation Dynamo using Minkowski Functionals

Abstract: The morphology and the characteristic scale of polarized structures provide crucial insights into the mechanisms that drive turbulence and maintain magnetic fields in magneto-ionic plasma. We aim to establish the efficacy of Minkowski functionals as quantitative statistical probes of filamentary morphology of polarized synchrotron emission resulting from fluctuation dynamo action. Using synthetic observations generated from magnetohydrodynamic simulations of fluctuation dynamos with varying driving scales ($\ell_{\rm f}$) of turbulence in isothermal, incompressible, and subsonic media, we study the relation between different morphological measures and their connection to fractional polarization ($p_{\rm f}$). We find that Faraday depolarization at low frequencies gives rise to small-scale polarized structures that have higher filamentarity as compared to the intrinsic structures that are comparable to $\ell_{\rm f}$. Above $\sim3\,{\rm GHz}$, the number of connected polarized structures per unit area ($N_{\rm CC, peak}$) is related to the mean $p_{\rm f}$ ($\langle p_{\rm f} \rangle$) of the emitting region as $\langle p_{\rm f}\rangle \propto N_{\rm CC, peak}^{-1/4}$, provided the scale of the detectable emitting region is larger than $\ell_{\rm f}$. This implies that $N_{\rm CC,peak}$ represents the number of turbulent cells projected on the plane of the sky and can be directly used to infer $\ell_{\rm f}$ via the relation $\ell_{\rm f} \propto N_{\rm CC,peak}^{-1/2}$. An estimate of $\ell_{\rm f}$ thus directly allows for pinning down the turbulence-driving mechanism in astrophysical systems. 14. An Assessment of Commonly Used Equivalent Circuit Models for Corrosion Analysis: A Bayesian Approach to Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

Abstract: Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a crucial technique for assessing corrosion of a metallic materials. The analysis of EIS hinges on the selection of an appropriate equivalent circuit model (ECM) that accurately characterizes the system under study. In this work, we systematically examined the applicability of three commonly used ECMs across several typical material degradation scenarios. By applying Bayesian Inference to simulated corrosion EIS data, we assessed the suitability of these ECMs under different corrosion conditions and identified regions where the EIS data lacks sufficient information to statistically substantiate the ECM structure. Additionally, we posit that the traditional approach to EIS analysis, which often requires measurements to very low frequencies, might not be always necessary to correctly model the appropriate ECM. Our study assesses the impact of omitting data from low to medium-frequency ranges on inference results and reveals that a significant portion of low-frequency measurements can be excluded without substantially compromising the accuracy of extracting system parameters. Further, we propose simple checks to the posterior distributions of the ECM components and posterior predictions, which can be used to quantitatively evaluate the suitability of a particular ECM and the minimum frequency required to be measured. This framework points to a pathway for expediting EIS acquisition by intelligently reducing low-frequency data collection and permitting on-the-fly EIS measurements

15. Zero-Shot Underwater Gesture Recognition

Abstract: Hand gesture recognition allows humans to interact with machines non-verbally, which has a huge application in underwater exploration using autonomous underwater vehicles. Recently, a new gesture-based language called CADDIAN has been devised for divers, and supervised learning methods have been applied to recognize the gestures with high accuracy. However, such methods fail when they encounter unseen gestures in real time. In this work, we advocate the need for zero-shot underwater gesture recognition (ZSUGR), where the objective is to train a model with visual samples of gestures from a few ``seen'' classes only and transfer the gained knowledge at test time to recognize semantically-similar unseen gesture classes as well. After discussing the problem and dataset-specific challenges, we propose new seen-unseen splits for gesture classes in CADDY dataset. Then, we present a two-stage framework, where a novel transformer learns strong visual gesture cues and feeds them to a conditional generative adversarial network that learns to mimic feature distribution. We use the trained generator as a feature synthesizer for unseen classes, enabling zero-shot learning. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms the existing zero-shot techniques. Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. 17. Resource-aware scheduling of multiple quantum circuits on a hardware device

Abstract: Recent quantum technologies and quantum error-correcting codes emphasize the requirement for arranging interacting qubits in a nearest-neighbor (NN) configuration while mapping a quantum circuit onto a given hardware device, in order to avoid undesirable noise. It is equally important to minimize the wastage of qubits in a quantum hardware device with m qubits while running circuits of n qubits in total, with n < m. In order to prevent cross-talk between two circuits, a buffer distance between their layouts is needed. Furthermore, not all the qubits and all the two-qubit interactions are at the same noise-level. Scheduling multiple circuits on the same hardware may create a possibility that some circuits are executed on a noisier layout than the others. In this paper, we consider an optimization problem which schedules as many circuits as possible for execution in parallel on the hardware, while maintaining a pre-defined layout quality for each. An integer linear programming formulation to ensure maximum fidelity while preserving the nearest neighbor arrangement among interacting qubits is presented. Our assertion is supported by comprehensive investigations involving various well-known quantum circuit benchmarks. 18. Generalization error of min-norm interpolators in transfer learning

Abstract: This paper establishes the generalization error of pooled min-$\ell_2$-norm interpolation in transfer learning where data from diverse distributions are available. Min-norm interpolators emerge naturally as implicit regularized limits of modern machine learning algorithms. Previous work characterized their out-of-distribution risk when samples from the test distribution are unavailable during training. However, in many applications, a limited amount of test data may be available during training, yet properties of min-norm interpolation in this setting are not well-understood. We address this gap by characterizing the bias and variance of pooled min-$\ell_2$-norm interpolation under covariate and model shifts. The pooled interpolator captures both early fusion and a form of intermediate fusion. Our results have several implications: under model shift, for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), adding data always hurts. For higher SNR, transfer learning helps as long as the shift-to-signal (SSR) ratio lies below a threshold that we characterize explicitly. By consistently estimating these ratios, we provide a data-driven method to determine: (i) when the pooled interpolator outperforms the target-based interpolator, and (ii) the optimal number of target samples that minimizes the generalization error. Under covariate shift, if the source sample size is small relative to the dimension, heterogeneity between between domains improves the risk, and vice versa. We establish a novel anisotropic local law to achieve these characterizations, which may be of independent interest in random matrix theory. Abstract: We report the first detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) on germanium, measured at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Ge-Mini detector of the COHERENT collaboration employs large-mass, low-noise, high-purity germanium spectrometers, enabling excellent energy resolution, and an analysis threshold of 1.5 keV electron-equivalent ionization energy. We observe a on-beam excess of 20.6$_{+7.1}^{-6.3}$ counts with a total exposure of 10.22 GWhkg and we reject the no-CEvNS hypothesis with 3.9 sigma significance. 20. ROTI-GCV: Generalized Cross-Validation for right-ROTationally Invariant Data

Abstract: Two key tasks in high-dimensional regularized regression are tuning the regularization strength for accurate predictions and estimating the out-of-sample risk. It is known that the standard approach -- $k$-fold cross-validation -- is inconsistent in modern high-dimensional settings. While leave-one-out and generalized cross-validation remain consistent in some high-dimensional cases, they become inconsistent when samples are dependent or contain heavy-tailed covariates. As a first step towards modeling structured sample dependence and heavy tails, we use right-rotationally invariant covariate distributions -- a crucial concept from compressed sensing. In the proportional asymptotics regime where the number of features and samples grow comparably, which is known to better reflect the empirical behavior in moderately sized datasets, we introduce a new framework, ROTI-GCV, for reliably performing cross-validation under these challenging conditions. Along the way, we propose new estimators for the signal-to-noise ratio and noise variance. 21. HEDE: Heritability estimation in high dimensions by Ensembling Debiased Estimators

Abstract: Estimating heritability remains a significant challenge in statistical genetics. Diverse approaches have emerged over the years that are broadly categorized as either random effects or fixed effects heritability methods. In this work, we focus on the latter. We propose HEDE, an ensemble approach to estimate heritability or the signal-to-noise ratio in high-dimensional linear models where the sample size and the dimension grow proportionally. Our method ensembles post-processed versions of the debiased lasso and debiased ridge estimators, and incorporates a data-driven strategy for hyperparameter selection that significantly boosts estimation performance. We establish rigorous consistency guarantees that hold despite adaptive tuning. Extensive simulations demonstrate our method's superiority over existing state-of-the-art methods across various signal structures and genetic architectures, ranging from sparse to relatively dense and from evenly to unevenly distributed signals. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages of fixed effects heritability estimation compared to random effects estimation. Our theoretical guarantees hold for realistic genotype distributions observed in genetic studies, where genotypes typically take on discrete values and are often well-modeled by sub-Gaussian distributed random variables. We establish our theoretical results by deriving uniform bounds, built upon the convex Gaussian min-max theorem, and leveraging universality results. Abstract: High-Level Synthesis (HLS) has transformed the development of complex Hardware IPs (HWIP) by offering abstraction and configurability through languages like SystemC/C++, particularly for Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) accelerators in high-performance and cloud computing contexts. These IPs can be synthesized for different FPGA boards in cloud, offering compact area requirements and enhanced flexibility. HLS enables designs to execute directly on ARM processors within modern FPGAs without the need for Register Transfer Level (RTL) synthesis, thereby conserving FPGA resources. While HLS offers flexibility and efficiency, it also introduces potential vulnerabilities such as the presence of hidden circuitry, including the possibility of hosting hardware trojans within designs. In cloud environments, these vulnerabilities pose significant security concerns such as leakage of sensitive data, IP functionality disruption and hardware damage, necessitating the development of robust testing frameworks. This research presents an advanced testing approach for HLS-developed cloud IPs, specifically targeting hidden malicious functionalities that may exist in rare conditions within the design. The proposed method leverages selective instrumentation, combining greybox fuzzing and concolic execution techniques to enhance test generation capabilities. Evaluation conducted on various HLS benchmarks, possessing characteristics of FPGA-based cloud IPs with embedded cloud related threats, demonstrates the effectiveness of our framework in detecting trojans and rare scenarios, showcasing improvements in coverage, time efficiency, memory usage, and testing costs compared to existing methods.

Abstract: In medical imaging, segmentation and localization of spinal tumors in three-dimensional (3D) space pose significant computational challenges, primarily stemming from limited data availability. In response, this study introduces a novel data augmentation technique, aimed at automating spine tumor segmentation and localization through AI approaches. Leveraging a fusion of fuzzy c-means clustering and Random Forest algorithms, the proposed method achieves successful spine tumor segmentation based on predefined masks initially delineated by domain experts in medical imaging. Subsequently, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture is employed for tumor classification. Moreover, 3D vertebral segmentation and labeling techniques are used to help pinpoint the exact location of the tumors in the lumbar spine. Results indicate a remarkable performance, with 99% accuracy for tumor segmentation, 98% accuracy for tumor classification, and 99% accuracy for tumor localization achieved with the proposed approach. These metrics surpass the efficacy of existing state-of-the-art techniques, as evidenced by superior Dice Score, Class Accuracy, and Intersection over Union (IOU) on class accuracy metrics. 25. Many-body quantum thermal machines in a Lieb-kagome Hubbard model

Abstract: Quantum many-body systems serve as a suitable working medium for realizing quantum thermal machines (QTMs) by offering distinct advantages such as cooperative many-body effects, and performance boost at the quantum critical points. However, the bulk of the existing literature exploring the criticality of many-body systems in the context of QTMs involves models sans the electronic interactions, which are non-trivial to deal with and require sophisticated numerical techniques. Here we adopt the prototypical Hubbard model in two dimensions (2D) in the framework of the line graph Lieb-kagome lattice for the working medium of a multi-functional QTM. We resort to a non-perturbative, static path approximated (SPA) Monte Carlo technique to deal with the repulsive Hubbard model. We observe that in a Stirling cycle, in both the interacting and non-interacting limits, the heat engine function dominates and its performance gets better when the strain is induced from the kagome to the Lieb limit, while for the reverse the refrigeration action is preferred. Further, we show that the QTM performs better when the difference between the temperatures of the two baths is lower and the QTM reaches the Carnot limit in this regime. Further, we extensively study the performance of the QTM in the repulsive Hubbard interacting regime where the magnetic orders come into the picture. 27. Shot noise in coupled electron-boson systems

Abstract: The nature of charge carriers in strange metals has become a topic of intense current investigation. Recent shot noise measurements in the quantum critical heavy fermion metal YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ revealed a suppression of the Fano factor that cannot be understood from electron-phonon scattering or strong electron correlations in a Fermi liquid, indicating loss of quasiparticles. The experiment motivates the consideration of shot noise in a variety of theoretical models in which quasiparticles may be lost. Here we study shot noise in systems with co-existing itinerant electrons and dispersive bosons, going beyond the regime where the bosons are on their own in thermal equilibrium. We construct the Boltzmann-Langevin equations for the coupled system, and show that adequate electron-boson couplings restore the Fano factor to its Fermi liquid value. Abstract: We address the challenge of constructing valid confidence intervals and sets in problems of prediction across multiple environments. We investigate two types of coverage suitable for these problems, extending the jackknife and split-conformal methods to show how to obtain distribution-free coverage in such non-traditional, potentially hierarchical data-generating scenarios. We demonstrate a novel resizing method to adapt to problem difficulty, which applies both to existing approaches for predictive inference and the methods we develop; this reduces prediction set sizes using limited information from the test environment, a key to the methods' practical performance, which we evaluate through neurochemical sensing and species classification datasets. Our contributions also include extensions for settings with non-real-valued responses, a theory of consistency for predictive inference in these general problems, and insights on the limits of conditional coverage.

30. A Comprehensive Review of Latent Space Dynamics Identification Algorithms for Intrusive and Non-Intrusive Reduced-Order-Modeling

Abstract: Numerical solvers of partial differential equations (PDEs) have been widely employed for simulating physical systems. However, the computational cost remains a major bottleneck in various scientific and engineering applications, which has motivated the development of reduced-order models (ROMs). Recently, machine-learning-based ROMs have gained significant popularity and are promising for addressing some limitations of traditional ROM methods, especially for advection dominated systems. In this chapter, we focus on a particular framework known as Latent Space Dynamics Identification (LaSDI), which transforms the high-fidelity data, governed by a PDE, to simpler and low-dimensional latent-space data, governed by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). These ODEs can be learned and subsequently interpolated to make ROM predictions. Each building block of LaSDI can be easily modulated depending on the application, which makes the LaSDI framework highly flexible. In particular, we present strategies to enforce the laws of thermodynamics into LaSDI models (tLaSDI), enhance robustness in the presence of noise through the weak form (WLaSDI), select high-fidelity training data efficiently through active learning (gLaSDI, GPLaSDI), and quantify the ROM prediction uncertainty through Gaussian processes (GPLaSDI). We demonstrate the performance of different LaSDI approaches on Burgers equation, a non-linear heat conduction problem, and a plasma physics problem, showing that LaSDI algorithms can achieve relative errors of less than a few percent and up to thousands of times speed-ups.

31. tLaSDI: Thermodynamics-informed latent space dynamics identification

Abstract: We propose a latent space dynamics identification method, namely tLaSDI, that embeds the first and second principles of thermodynamics. The latent variables are learned through an autoencoder as a nonlinear dimension reduction model. The latent dynamics are constructed by a neural network-based model that precisely preserves certain structures for the thermodynamic laws through the GENERIC formalism. An abstract error estimate is established, which provides a new loss formulation involving the Jacobian computation of autoencoder. The autoencoder and the latent dynamics are simultaneously trained to minimize the new loss. Computational examples demonstrate the effectiveness of tLaSDI, which exhibits robust generalization ability, even in extrapolation. In addition, an intriguing correlation is empirically observed between a quantity from tLaSDI in the latent space and the behaviors of the full-state solution., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures

32. Electron correlations in the kagome flat band metal $\rm CsCr_3Sb_5$

Abstract: Kagome metals offer a unique platform for investigating robust electron-correlation effects because of their lattice geometry, flat bands and multi-orbital nature. In the cases with active flat bands, recent theoretical studies have pointed to a rich phase diagram that contains not only electronic orders but also quantum criticality. Very recently, $\rm CsCr_3Sb_5$ has emerged as a strong candidate for exploring such new physics. Here, using effective tight-binding models obtained from ab initio calculations, we study the effects of electronic correlations and symmetries on the electronic structure of $\rm CsCr_3 Sb_5$. The effective tight-binding model and Fermi surface comprise multiple Cr-$d$ orbitals and Sb-$p$ orbitals. The introduction of Hubbard-Kanamori interactions leads to orbital-selective band renormalization dominated by the $d_{xz}$ band, concurrently producing emergent flat bands very close to the Fermi level. Our analysis sets the stage for further investigations into the electronic properties of $\rm CsCr_3Sb_5$, including electronic orders, quantum criticality and unconventional superconductivity, which promise to shed much new light into the electronic materials with frustrated lattices and bring about new connections with the correlation physics of a variety of strongly correlated systems., Comment: 6 + 6 pages, 4 + 5 figures

33. Detecting transitions between collective motion regimes using functional hypothesis test of the time-varying persistence homology

Abstract: In a system of many similar self-propelled entities such as flocks of birds, fish school, cells and molecules, the interactions with neighbors can lead to a "coherent state", meaning the formation of visually compelling aggregation patterns due to the local adjustment of speed and direction. In this study, we explore one of the open questions that arise in studying collective patterns. When such entities, considered here as particles, tend to assume a coherent state beginning from an incoherent (random) state, what is the time interval for the transition? Also, how do model parameters affect this transition time interval? Given the observations of particle migration over a given time period as a point cloud data sampled at discrete time points, we use Topological Data Analysis, specifically persistent homology, to infer the transition time interval in which the particles undergo regime change. The topology of the particle configuration at any given time instance is captured by the persistent homology specifically Persistence Landscapes. We localize (in time) when such a transition happens by conducting the statistical significance tests namely functional hypothesis tests on persistent homology outputs corresponding to subsets of the time evolution. This process is validated on a known collective behavior model of the self-propelled particles with the regime transitions triggered by changing the model parameters in time. As an application, the developed technique was ultimately used to describe the transition in cellular movement from a disordered state to collective motion when the environment was altered., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

34. Particle-hole asymmetric phases in doped twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract: Despite much theoretical work, developing a comprehensive ab initio model for twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has proven challenging due to the inherent trade-off between accurately describing the band structure and incorporating the interactions within the Hamiltonian, particularly given the topological obstruction -- so-called fragile topology -- to the description of the model in terms of localized symmetric Wannier functions within the flat band manifold. Here, we circumvent this obstruction by using an extended 8-orbital model, for which localized Wannier orbitals have been formulated by Carr et al. [1]. We constructed an extended multi-orbital Hubbard model, and performed Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations to explore its phase diagram across commensurate fillings from -3 to 3. We found several nearly-degenerate insulating states at charge neutrality, all of which exhibit orbital orders. Crucially, TBG near magic angle is known to be particle-hole asymmetric, which is naturally captured by the single-particle band structure of our model and is reflected in the distinction between the symmetry broken states obtained at electron and hole dopings away from the charge neutral point. At filling -1 and +2, quantum anomalous hall states are obtained, while for the rest of the integer fillings away from charge neutrality, we found the system to realize metallic states with various orbital, valley and spin orderings. We also observed that most of the Hartree--Fock ground states exhibit a generalized valley Hund's-like rule, resulting in valley polarization. Importantly, we show that the incorporation of the intra-valley and inter-valley exchange interactions is crucial to properly stabilize the ordered symmetry-broken states. In agreement with experiments, we find significant particle-hole asymmetry, which underscores the importance of using particle-hole asymmetric models.

Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Single-phase multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) hold promise for improved mechanical properties as a result of multiple operative deformation modes. However, the use of many of these alloys in structural applications is limited as a consequence of their poor aqueous corrosion resistance. Here we introduce a new approach for significantly improving the passivation behavior of alloys by tuning the chemical short-range order (CSRO) parameter. We show that the addition of only 0.03 to 0.06 mole fraction of Al to a (FeCoNi)0.9Cr0.1 alloy changed both the magnitude and sign of the Cr-Cr CSRO parameter resulting in passivation behavior similar to 304L stainless steel containing twice the amount of Cr. Our analysis is based on comparing electrochemical measures of the kinetics of passive film formation with CSRO characterizations using time-of-flight neutron scattering, cluster expansion methods, density functional theory and Monte Carlo techniques. Our findings are interpreted within the framework of a recently proposed percolation theory of passivation that examines how selective dissolution of the non-passivating alloy components and CSRO results in excellent passive films at reduced levels of the passivating component., Comment: 19 pages, 4 Figures, 1 Table, 49 references. 44. Radio polarization of millisecond pulsars with multipolar magnetic fields

Abstract: NICER has observed a few millisecond pulsars where the geometry of the X-ray emitting hotspots on the neutron star is analyzed in order to constrain the mass and radius from X-ray light curve modeling. One example, PSR J0030+0451, is shown to possibly have significant multipolar magnetic fields at the stellar surface. Using force-free simulations of the magnetosphere structure, it has been shown that the radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray light curves can be modeled simultaneously with appropriate field configuration. An even more stringent test is to compare predictions of the force-free magnetosphere model with observations of the radio polarization. This paper attempts to reproduce the radio polarization of PSR J0030+0451 using a force-free magnetospheric solution. 45. Segmentation of tibiofemoral joint tissues from knee MRI using MtRA-Unet and incorporating shape information: Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative

Abstract: Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is the third most prevalent Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD) after neck and back pain. To monitor such a severe MSD, a segmentation map of the femur, tibia and tibiofemoral cartilage is usually accessed using the automated segmentation algorithm from the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the knee. But, in recent works, such segmentation is conceivable only from the multistage framework thus creating data handling issues and needing continuous manual inference rendering it unable to make a quick and precise clinical diagnosis. In order to solve these issues, in this paper the Multi-Resolution Attentive-Unet (MtRA-Unet) is proposed to segment the femur, tibia and tibiofemoral cartilage automatically. The proposed work has included a novel Multi-Resolution Feature Fusion (MRFF) and Shape Reconstruction (SR) loss that focuses on multi-contextual information and structural anatomical details of the femur, tibia and tibiofemoral cartilage. Unlike previous approaches, the proposed work is a single-stage and end-to-end framework producing a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 98.5% for the femur, 98.4% for the tibia, 89.1% for Femoral Cartilage (FC) and 86.1% for Tibial Cartilage (TC) for critical MRI slices that can be helpful to clinicians for KOA grading. The time to segment MRI volume (160 slices) per subject is 22 sec. which is one of the fastest among state-of-the-art. Moreover, comprehensive experimentation on the segmentation of FC and TC which is of utmost importance for morphology-based studies to check KOA progression reveals that the proposed method has produced an excellent result with binary segmentation

46. DatUS^2: Data-driven Unsupervised Semantic Segmentation with Pre-trained Self-supervised Vision Transformer

Abstract: Successive proposals of several self-supervised training schemes continue to emerge, taking one step closer to developing a universal foundation model. In this process, the unsupervised downstream tasks are recognized as one of the evaluation methods to validate the quality of visual features learned with a self-supervised training scheme. However, unsupervised dense semantic segmentation has not been explored as a downstream task, which can utilize and evaluate the quality of semantic information introduced in patch-level feature representations during self-supervised training of a vision transformer. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel data-driven approach for unsupervised semantic segmentation (DatUS^2) as a downstream task. DatUS^2 generates semantically consistent and dense pseudo annotate segmentation masks for the unlabeled image dataset without using any visual-prior or synchronized data. We compare these pseudo-annotated segmentation masks with ground truth masks for evaluating recent self-supervised training schemes to learn shared semantic properties at the patch level and discriminative semantic properties at the segment level. Finally, we evaluate existing state-of-the-art self-supervised training schemes with our proposed downstream task, i.e., DatUS^2. Also, the best version of DatUS^2 outperforms the existing state-of-the-art method for the unsupervised dense semantic segmentation task with 15.02% MiOU and 21.47% Pixel accuracy on the SUIM dataset. Abstract: Neuromorphic systems, inspired by the complexity and functionality of the human brain, have gained interest in academic and industrial attention due to their unparalleled potential across a wide range of applications. While their capabilities herald innovation, it is imperative to underscore that these computational paradigms, analogous to their traditional counterparts, are not impervious to security threats. Although the exploration of neuromorphic methodologies for image and video processing has been rigorously pursued, the realm of neuromorphic audio processing remains in its early stages. Our results highlight the robustness and precision of our FPGA-based neuromorphic system. Specifically, our system showcases a commendable balance between desired signal and background noise, efficient spike rate encoding, and unparalleled resilience against adversarial attacks such as FGSM and PGD. A standout feature of our framework is its detection rate of 94%, which, when compared to other methodologies, underscores its greater capability in identifying and mitigating threats within 5.39 dB, a commendable SNR ratio. 48. Equations of State, Thermodynamics, and Miscibility Curves for Jovian Planet and Giant Exoplanet Evolutionary Models

Abstract: The equation of state of hydrogen-helium (H-He) mixtures plays a vital role in the evolution and structure of gas giant planets and exoplanets. Recent equations of state that account for hydrogen-helium interactions, coupled with hydrogen-helium immiscibility curves, can now produce more physical evolutionary models, such as accounting for helium rain with greater fidelity than in the past. In this work, we present a set of tools for planetary evolution\footnote{All tables of thermodynamic quantities and derivatives are available at \url{https://github.com/Rob685/hhe_eos_misc}, along with a unified Python interface. Tutorials demonstrating the interface are also available in the repository.} that provides a Python interface for existing tables of useful thermodynamic quantities, state-of-the-art H-He equations of state, and pressure-dependent H-He immiscibility curves. In particular, for a collection of independent variable choices, we provide scripts to calculate the variety of thermodynamic derivatives used to model convection and energy transport. These include the chemical potential derived from the internal energy, which is a modeling necessity in the presence of composition gradients when entropy is the other primary variable. Finally, an entropy-based convection formalism is presented and fully described that highlights the physical differences between adiabatic and isentropic interior models. 49. Universality in block dependent linear models with applications to nonparametric regression

Abstract: Over the past decade, characterizing the exact asymptotic risk of regularized estimators in high-dimensional regression has emerged as a popular line of work. This literature considers the proportional asymptotics framework, where the number of features and samples both diverge, at a rate proportional to each other. Substantial work in this area relies on Gaussianity assumptions on the observed covariates. Further, these studies often assume the design entries to be independent and identically distributed. Parallel research investigates the universality of these findings, revealing that results based on the i.i.d.~Gaussian assumption extend to a broad class of designs, such as i.i.d.~sub-Gaussians. However, universality results examining dependent covariates so far focused on correlation-based dependence or a highly structured form of dependence, as permitted by right rotationally invariant designs. In this paper, we break this barrier and study a dependence structure that in general falls outside the purview of these established classes. We seek to pin down the extent to which results based on i.i.d.~Gaussian assumptions persist. We identify a class of designs characterized by a block dependence structure that ensures the universality of i.i.d.~Gaussian-based results. We establish that the optimal values of the regularized empirical risk and the risk associated with convex regularized estimators, such as the Lasso and ridge, converge to the same limit under block dependent designs as they do for i.i.d.~Gaussian entry designs. Our dependence structure differs significantly from correlation-based dependence, and enables, for the first time, asymptotically exact risk characterization in prevalent nonparametric regression problems in high dimensions. Finally, we illustrate through experiments that this universality becomes evident quite early, even for relatively moderate sample sizes.

50. Repeated quantum game as a stochastic game: Effects of the shadow of the future and entanglement

Abstract: We present a systematic investigation of the quantum games, constructed using a novel repeated game protocol, when played repeatedly ad infinitum. We focus on establishing that such repeated games -- by virtue of inherent quantum-mechanical randomness -- can be mapped to the paradigm of stochastic games. Subsequently, using the setup of two-player--two-action games, we explore the pure reactive strategies belonging to the set of reactive strategies, whose support in the quantum games is no longer countably finite but rather non-denumerably infinite. We find that how two pure strategies fare against each other is crucially dependent on the discount factor (the probability of occurrence of every subsequent round) and how much entangled the quantum states of the players are. We contrast the results obtained with the corresponding results in the classical setup and find fundamental differences between them: e.g, when the underlying game is the prisoner's dilemma, in the quantum game setup, always-defect strategy can be beaten by the tit-for-tat strategy for high enough discount factor.
