1. Examining Oral Test Accommodation in Assessing Malaysian 'Orang Asli' Pupils' Mathematics Performance for Computation and Word Problem Testlets

Abstract

Purpose: The language load within mathematics test items can lead to inaccuracy in assessing "Orang Asli" pupils' mathematical ability due to their struggle in comprehending the academic language. This study aims to determine the validity of using test accommodations in the form of oral academic language and oral native language when administering mathematics computation and word problem test items among the "Orang Asli" pupils. Methodology: By employing a quantitative approach, this study utilised random equivalent group design to examine the validity of using oral test accommodations among 334 Grade Four "Orang Asli" pupils. Three testlets were constructed and used in this study: written test in the academic language (WAL), oral test in the academic language (OAL), and oral test in the native language (ONL). The three testlets comprised Paper 1 and Paper 2, each consisting of 20 mathematics computation and 20-word problem test items, respectively. One-way ANOVA was used to analyse and examine if there were differences in the mathematics performance between the three groups of tests administered to the "Orang Asli" pupils. Findings: The results indicated that the test scores of the pupils on the oral tests were higher compared to the written test administered to the pupils for both mathematics computation and word problem items. For computation items, the pupils performed better in the OAL testlet, followed by the ONL testlet. On the other hand, the pupils obtained the highest test scores in the ONL testlet compared to the OAL testlet for word problem items. Furthermore, the results illustrate that there is a difference in the mathematics performance of the "Orang Asli" pupils between the oral tests in both languages and written tests in the academic language. Significant: This study clearly shows that language plays a prominent role in affecting the "Orang Asli" pupils' mathematics performance. By utilising the oral test as a promising test accommodation, this measure could help address the language barrier faced by the "Orang Asli" pupils in mathematics testing.

Abstract

In a recent work we showed that the detection of the exchange of a single graviton between a massive quantum resonator and a gravitational wave can be achieved. Key to this ability are the experimental progress in preparing and measuring massive resonators in the quantum regime, and the correlation with independent LIGO detections of gravitational waves that induce stimulated absorption. But do stimulated single-graviton processes imply the quantization of gravity? Here we analyze this question and make a historic analogy to the early days of quantum theory. We discuss in what ways such experiments can indeed probe key features of the quantized interaction between gravity and matter, and outline five experimental tests. 5. Collaborative Learning in Tertiary Education Classrooms: What Does It Entail?

Abstract

Purpose: Collaborative learning has been increasingly recognized as an effective approach to promote students' success in higher education. To better understand the factors that contribute to successful collaborative learning, this study applied the Biggs' presage-process-product (3P) general model of learning to investigate the role of teaching quality, student-faculty interaction, and relatedness as presage factors, collaborative learning as process factor, and reflective and integrative learning and higher-order thinking as product factors. Methodology: A cross-sectional approach was applied in this study, which included 1,892 Malaysian undergraduates. The study used the Quality of University Learning Experience (QULEX) survey to measure various constructs. First, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to establish the psychometric properties of the instruments. Thereafter, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to evaluate the latent variables relationships. Findings: Based on the findings, collaborative learning fully mediated the prediction of student-faculty interaction, teaching quality, and relatedness on reflective and integrative learning and higher-order thinking. Significance: These findings suggest that collaborative learning with social components and effective teaching maximize students' learning activities, and they should be fostered in academic institutions to improve students' academic success. Implications for improving teaching and learning are also discussed in this paper.

Abstract

ObjectiveIn an earlier study, several tested International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) pictograms did not achieve validity among older adults in Singapore. In this study, for 27 unvalidated FIP pictograms, we (1) developed variants of each pictogram, (2) elicited the most-preferred variant, and (3) assessed the validity of the most-preferred variant among older Singaporeans.MethodsIn phase 1, up to three variants of the 27 pictograms were developed, based on older adults' feedback from a previous study. In phase 2, the most-preferred variant of 26 pictograms, which had two or three variants, was selected by 100 older participants. In phase 3, the 27 most-preferred variants (including the pictogram with only one variant) were assessed for validity - transparency and translucency - among 278 older participants (10 pictograms per participant). To evaluate transparency, participants were first asked: "If you see this picture on a medicine label, what do you think it means?" for each assigned pictogram. If they responded, they were asked, "How do you know?", and if not, they were told, "Tell me everything you see in this picture". Then, participants were shown their assigned pictograms again, one by one, and the pictogram's intended meaning was revealed to evaluate translucency. Pictograms were classified as valid (≥66% participants interpreted its intended meaning correctly [transparency criterion] and ≥85% participants rated its representativeness as ≥ 5 [translucency criterion]), partially valid (only transparency criterion fulfilled) or not valid.ResultsIn phase 1, 77 variants of the 27 pictograms were developed. In phase 2, a majority of the most-preferred variants were selected by >50% participants. In phase 3, 10 (37.0%) of the 27 pictograms tested were considered valid, and five (18.5%) were partially valid. A higher proportion of pictograms portraying dose and route of administration and precautions were valid or partially valid, versus those depicting indications or side effects.ConclusionContextual redesigning and selection of pharmaceutical pictograms, which initially failed to achieve validity in a population, contributed to their validation.InnovationThe redesigned validated pictograms from this study can be incorporated into relevant patient information materials in clinical practice.

Abstract

Abstract Background Little is known on the prospective associations between an empirically derived dietary pattern (DP) and life satisfaction among adolescents. This PUTRA-Adol follow-up study aimed to assess the prospective associations between the empirically derived DP and life satisfaction during adolescence. Methods A total of 585 and 262 adolescents participated in the baseline PUTRA-Adol study in 2016 and PUTRA-Adol follow-up study in 2019–2020, respectively. These adolescents were recruited from three southern states in peninsular Malaysia, namely Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. Dietary assessments were estimated using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) while a Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS) was used to measure life satisfaction at baseline in 2016 as well as at follow-up in 2019–2020. A DP characterised by foods high in free sugar and energy dense was identified using reduced rank regression (RRR), cross-sectionally at baseline and was reported elsewhere. Similar RRR analysis was used to find a DP that best explained the variation in response variables linked to poorer life satisfaction, including dietary energy density (DED), fiber density, and percentage of energy from total fat and sugar at the PUTRA-Adol follow-up study. Prospective relationship between adherence to the identified DPs and overall life satisfaction scores as well as its domains between 2016 and 2019–2020 were evaluated using generalized estimating equation models (GEE). Results A DP characterized by high intakes of percentage energy from sugar, fibre and low in DED and percentage energy from total fat was identified at the 2019–2020 follow-up. The identified DP explained 11% of total variations in the response variables and was characterized by high intakes of sweets, sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) and fruits. 12. The Challenges of Virtual Learning: An Exploratory Study among 'Orang Asli' Pupils from the Mathematics Teachers' Perspectives

Abstract

The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic subsequently led to the digitalization of education, whereby globally virtual learning was implemented to sustain learning. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by Orang Asli pupils when carrying out virtual learning from the mathematics teachers' perspectives. By employing exploratory qualitative research design and purposive sampling, five teacher participants from two schools in two states in Malaysia were selected. Data was collected from two online and face-to-face focus group interviews. Thematic analysis identified four major themes, which are challenges related to language proficiency, logistic, home and classroom. Based on these emergent themes, various stakeholders can focus their efforts to address these challenges to mitigate Orang Asli pupils' potential learning loss in the post-Covid era and thus, ensure they remain abreast to current mathematics learning. Further studies should explore on mobile and modular learning as promising alternatives means of content delivery for their future virtual learning.

Participants completed three sleep questionnaires at the end of the data collection period and completed well-being surveys 6 times. The Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) for each player was also calculated from actigraphy data. Light exposure data were organised into three different timeframes: morning (wake time + 2 hours), daytime (end of morning to 6 pm), and evening (2 hours leading up to bedtime) for analysis. Repeated measures correlation was conducted for objective sleep measures and mEDI values per timeframe. Pearson’s correlation was conducted on subjective sleep measures and well-being measures against mEDI values per timeframe.Results: Higher morning light was associated with significantly (p < 0.001) greater total sleep time (r = 0.31). Higher daytime light exposure was associated with higher subjective sleep quality (r = 0.48, p < 0.05). Higher evening light exposure was associated with higher Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) global scores (r = 0.52, p < 0.05). There were no other significant correlations between light exposure and sleep or well-being measures (p > 0.05).Conclusion: Higher morning and daylight exposure levels were associated with various positive objective and subjective sleep measures in professional team sport athletes, supporting the need for education on optimising light exposure to improve circadian function, sleep, and health.Keywords: mEDI, actigraphy, wearable light sensors, lux, circadian rhythms

15. The Practice of Critical Thinking Skills in Teaching Mathematics: Teachers' Perception and Readiness

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the relationship and influence of mathematics teachers' perception and readiness on the practice of critical thinking skills (CTS) in implementing pedagogical processes in secondary schools. Methodology: Participants of the study consisted of 226 mathematics teachers who taught in three different secondary school categories, namely high performing schools (HPS), moderate performing schools (MPS) and low performing schools (LPS) throughout the state of Kelantan, Malaysia. The instrument used was adapted from Thurman (2009) to test the teachers' perception of CTS, while the teachers' readiness to apply CTS was adapted from Nagappan (2001) and Yusof and Ibrahim (2012). Besides, measurement of the teachers' practice of CTS was adapted from Aldegether (2009), Barak and Shakhman (2008), and Shim and Walczak (2012). Findings: Teachers' perception, readiness, and CTS practice in mathematics teaching were high in HPS but low in LPS. There was a strong positive relationship between teachers' perception of CTS practice and teachers' readiness to implement CTS practice in mathematics teaching. In addition, a total of 65 percent variance was contributed by both variables, namely teachers' perception and teachers' readiness for CTS practice in mathematics teaching, and this contribution was very high. Significance: The findings of the study also proved that the practice of CTS has improved the pedagogical quality of teachers, especially in meeting the needs of 21st century learning in the classroom. The emphasis on higher order thinking skills (HOTS) is a continuation of the excellence of teaching strategies through a variety of planned learning resources.

Abstract

BackgroundPrescription medication labels (PMLs) predominantly dispensed in English, are an important adjunct to medication counselling. PMLs are routinely used by pharmacy staff to counsel older adults about their medications. This study sought to identify challenges that pharmacy staff observe older adults face in using their PMLs, and to identify and quantify solutions employed by pharmacy staff during medication counselling to address such challenges.MethodsTen in-depth interviews were done with primary care pharmacy staff to gather the range of challenges and solutions. Subsequently, a quantitative survey, informed by the qualitative findings, was administered to 121 pharmacy staff to assess if the reported solutions were commonly used.ResultsThe two main challenges were incongruity between PML language (English) and older adults' language proficiency, and poor PML legibility. The solutions, classified under three themes, were simplifying medication information on PMLs, supplementing PMLs with additional medication information and mitigating poor readability.ConclusionsPharmacy staff observed challenges faced by older adults in using PMLs during medication counselling. Ad-hoc improvisations by pharmacy staff to PMLs were pervasive. System-level PML improvements, such as provision of legible bilingual medication instructions, pharmaceutical pictograms and additional medication information, through patient information leaflets or using quick response (QR) codes on PMLs, should be considered. This will facilitate patient-provider communication, especially in settings with language dissonance between PMLs and patients.

Abstract

Purpose: The Malaysian government has allocated a large budget for "Orang Asli" primary school education via the Department of "Orang Asli" Development (JAKOA) to help improve the "Orang Asli" pupils' academic performance and in, Mathematics as well. Teachers face challenges in ensuring that "Orang Asli" pupils become competent learners of mathematics. Hence, there is a need to explore the teachers' perspectives on the teaching and learning of Mathematics in the "Orang Asli" schools. This study examined the teachers' perspectives on the issues and challenges of the teaching and learning of mathematics for the "Orang Asli" primary school pupils in Malaysia. Methodology: In this qualitative study, two "Orang Asli" primary schools were randomly selected from eight primary schools within an "Orang Asli" Settlement in the District of Sungai Siput. The data were collected via focus group discussions and interviews, which were carried out during the enculturation visits and were fully transcribed and thematically analysed. The research participants were purposively selected and comprised the school's administrators and mathematics teachers. Findings: The results of the data analysis show that there are two main themes, namely classroom challenges and school challenges, in determining mathematics competence among "Orang Asli" pupils. Classroom challenges consists of five sub-themes namely coverage of Mathematics syllabus, Mathematics teaching and learning resources, pupil engagement, language barrier, and Mathematics learning culture. School challenges consists of two sub-themes namely school attendance and discipline. To enhance mathematics competence among "Orang Asli" pupils, it is deemed important to implement programmes and community engagement. Significance: This study contributes towards the knowledge of teaching and learning of Mathematics for "Orang Asli" pupils. Teachers are recommended to allow "Orang Asli" pupils to take home their mathematics textbooks so that they can complete their homework at home. Teachers are highly recommended to conduct mathematics teaching and learning activities in groups for meaningful and engaging lessons.

24. ESL Undergraduates' Perceptions of Teacher Self-Disclosure in a Malaysian Writing Classroom

Abstract

Past studies have indicated that teachers' self-disclosure has a direct influence on students' learning. It has impacted students' motivation, participation, interest, affect for teacher and course, solidarity, affinity seeking behaviours and out-of-classroom communication. However, little is understood about how this phenomenon affects teaching and learning across different cultural contexts and ESL environments. This study attempted to investigate ESL teachers' self-disclosures in a Malaysian writing classroom. Fifty second-year undergraduates enrolled in an academic writing course and the respective teacher were interviewed using semi-structured interview protocols. The thematic analysis indicated that seven themes, learning strategy, writing strategies, content generating strategies, affective learning, teacher-student communication, classroom climate and appropriateness were important factors that influenced teachers' self-disclosures in the ESL writing classroom. The results from this study demonstrate that ESL students' perceptions towards teachers' self-disclosure have important implications for affective, instructional and learning strategies. This study concludes that teachers' self-disclosure has potential use as a pedagogical tool that could enhance the teaching and learning of ESL writing.

Abstract

Upper limb movement classification, which maps input signals to the target activities, is a key building block in the control of rehabilitative robotics. Classifiers are trained for the rehabilitative system to comprehend the desires of the patient whose upper limbs do not function properly. Electromyography (EMG) signals and Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are used widely for upper limb movement classification. By analysing the classification results of the real-time EEG and EMG signals, the system can understand the intention of the user and predict the events that one would like to carry out. Accordingly, it will provide external help to the user. However, the noise in the real-time EEG and EMG data collection process contaminates the effectiveness of the data, which undermines classification performance. Moreover, not all patients process strong EMG signals due to muscle damage and neuromuscular disorder. To address these issues, this paper explores different feature extraction techniques and machine learning and deep learning models for EEG and EMG signals classification and proposes a novel decision-level multisensor fusion technique to integrate EEG signals with EMG signals. This system retrieves effective information from both sources to understand and predict the desire of the user, and thus aid. Abstract

The concept of “sustainable development” fuelling today’s sustainability industry may be traced back to the turn of the 14th century. The Holy Roman Empire’s imperialistic expansions into Africa and the Canary Islands eventually morphed into a burgeoning capitalist European colonial project, which then sought to undo the very environmental harms it had wrought through colonial extraction, through further colonial domination and social control. Post-World War II “peace” efforts birthed supranational entities that continue to impose white supremacist epistemological systems, frames, and standards on the neocolonised Global South. These impositions led to the creation of the contemporary sustainability industry, enabling the obfuscation of Global North expansionism through the application of white supremacist, Western-centric sustainability rhetoric. The cultural evolution of “sustainability” moves steadily apace as decolonial counternarratives struggle to materialise amid active silencing and stamping out by the mechanisms of coloniality.

33. The Mathematics Performance of Aboriginal Pupils for Computation and Word Problem Items in Using Academic and Community Languages

Abstract

This comparative research study examined Grade Five Malaysian Aboriginal pupils' mathematical performance on 30 computation and 20 word problem items in the academic Malay language and community "Temiar" language. The items were constructed in the Malay language before adapting and audio recording into the "Temiar" language using experienced Mathematics teachers and native speakers. One test consisting of monolingual test items written in Malay language (MAL) and, another bilingual test with audio test items in "Temiar" language and written items in Malay language (BCL) were constructed. These two tests with identical content validity, were administered spirally among 237 pupils from eight schools in two states. Findings indicated that for computation and word problem items, pupils found the BCL test easier. They performed significantly better in computation items than in word problem items for both tests, with Cohen's d medium to high effect. The community language helped to alleviate the linguistics complications.

34. Word Order in Job Interviews: The Malaysian Perspective

Abstract

The present study was conducted to analyse the use of word order in job interviews. The data was collected from participants in an organisation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Ten candidates of different races between the ages of 23 and 25 participated in the study. Radford's syntactic theory of word order was employed to qualitatively analyse the data. It was found that positive sentences were predominantly used by the selected (n = 10; 47.4%) compared to the not selected (n = 10; 44.0%) and keep in view (KIV) (n = 23; 39.0%) job candidates. The findings further revealed that the types of word order used in utterances by the selected candidates were different compared to those who were not chosen for interviews. Selected candidates used more negative sentences, subordinate clauses, and time expression in sentences, whereas those who were not selected utilised adverbs of manner in negative sentences, subordinate clauses, and time expression in sentences, while the not selected candidates only used the position of adverbs. On the other hand, the KIV candidates used positive sentences, subordinate clauses and word order in questions in their utterances. The study can provide important contributions to knowledge on the use of English when developing employment course modules emphasising word order as an essential element in portraying good English language proficiency in job interviews.

Abstract

Failure in addressing students' needs in the context of student learning experiences may lead to negative impact on the image of higher education. Framed in self-determination theory, this study examined students' relatedness on most satisfying experiences in their respective universities. Participants' (N=1974) responses to open-ended questions were inductively coded to understand relatedness principles of student learning experiences to emerge from the data. The findings revealed that students valued the role of lecturers in professional and personal contexts, peers for friendship and teamwork and academic and non-academic experiences resulted from projects and activities. Given this, to provide a positive learning environment for students, university management needs to address and support lecturers' well-being, pay attention to student relations on campus and support academic and non-academic activities. By understanding the roles of connecting students to lecturers, students to students and students to administrative staff, we could build a dynamic and functional campus environment for each party to live and care about each other.

36. Examining the Quality of English Test Items Using Psychometric and Linguistic Characteristics among Grade Six Pupils

Abstract

Purpose: This study examined the quality of English test items using psychometric and linguistic characteristics among Grade Six pupils. Method: Contrary to the conventional approach of relying only on statistics when investigating item quality, this study adopted a mixed-method approach by employing psychometric analysis and cognitive interviews. The former was conducted on 30 Grade Six pupils, with each item representing a different construct commonly found in English test papers. Qualitative input was obtained through cognitive interviews with five Grade Six pupils and expert judgements from three teachers. Findings: None of the items were found to be too easy or difficult, and all items had positive discrimination indices. The item on idioms was most ideal in terms of difficulty and discrimination. Difficult items were found to be vocabulary-based. Surprisingly, the higher-order-thinking subjective items proved to be excellent in difficulty, although improvements could be made on their ability to discriminate. The qualitative expert judgements agreed with the quantitative psychometric analysis. Certain results from the item analysis, however, contradicted past findings that items with the ideal item difficulty value between 0.4 and 0.6 would have equally ideal item discrimination index. Significance: The findings of the study can serve as a reminder on the significance of using Classical Test Theory, a non-complex psychometric approach in assisting classroom teacher practitioners during the meticulous process of test design and ensuring test item quality.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Abstract

A strong association between rubella virus (RuV) and chronic granulomas, in individuals with inborn errors of immunity, has been recently established. Both the RA27/3 vaccine and wild-type RuV strains were highly sensitive to a broad-spectrum antiviral drug, nitazoxanide (NTZ), in vitro. However, NTZ treatment, used as a salvage therapy, resulted in little or no improvements of RuV-associated cutaneous granulomas in patients. Here, we report investigations of possible causes of treatment failures in two ataxia-telangiectasia patients. Although a reduction in RuV RNA in skin lesions was detected by real-time RT-PCR, live immunodeficiency-related vaccine-derived rubella viruses (iVDRV) were recovered from granulomas, before and after the treatments. Tizoxanide, an active NTZ metabolite, inhibited replications of all iVDRVs in cultured A549 cells, but the 50% and 90% inhibitory concentrations were 10-40 times higher than those for the RA27/3 strain. There were no substantial differences in iVDRV sensitivities, neither before nor after treatments. Analysis of quasispecies in the E1 gene, a suspected NTZ target, showed no effect of NTZ treatments on quasispecies' complexity in lesions. Thus, failures of NTZ therapies were likely due to low sensitivities of iVDRVs to the drug, and not related to the emergence of resistance, following long-term NTZ treatments.

Abstract

BackgroundPrescription medication labels (PMLs) are an important source of written medication information for patients. However, real-world PMLs do not entirely conform with available labelling best practices and guidelines. Given this disconnect, older adults remain particularly at risk of misinterpreting their PMLs. Past studies have commonly assessed hypothetical PMLs, warranting studies that explore the lived experiences of older adults with real-world PMLs. Furthermore, the perspective of family caregivers of older adults is yet to be studied.ObjectivesThis qualitative study documented the challenges faced by older adults and their family caregivers in using real-world PMLs, their strategies to cope with these challenges, and their suggestions to improve existing PMLs.MethodsWe conducted two focus group discussions (n = 17) and 30 in-depth interviews with older adults (n = 20; including those who can read in English and those with limited English proficiency) and caregivers (n = 10) in Singapore. The data were systematically assigned to codes that were continuously refined to accommodate emergent themes.ResultsChallenges, coping strategies and suggested improvements were related to the comprehensibility, availability, readability and consistency of medication information on PMLs.ConclusionsReal-world PMLs continue to pose challenges for older adults and their caregivers, necessitating them to seek unique and personal coping strategies. The identified PML improvements, desired by older adults and their caregivers, urge healthcare systems to implement improved PMLs. Future research should explore system-level logistical, financial, and administrative barriers (or opportunities) that hinder (or facilitate) this implementation.
