Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) is on the rise to cater to non-traditional students. However, the surge in master's and doctoral students opting for ODeL raises concerns about the quality and timely completion of degrees. Existing literature on student attrition in higher education indicates that both student-related factors and institutional variables significantly impact completion rates. Factors such as students' sense of connection or isolation, as well as institutional aspects like supervisor responsiveness to feedback and feedforward, contribute to student persistence. To address this early attrition and extended stays in postgraduate studies, a community of practice (CoP), comprising lecturers and master's and doctoral students was formed. The CoP employed the Social Learning Theory (SLT) approach to initiate collaborative partnerships designed to promote a research culture and explore alternative approaches to curb master's and doctoral late completion and attrition. This paper reports on a study undertaken to explore the experiences, perceptions and insights of master's and doctoral candidates regarding the implementation of innovative multimodal Open Distance e-Learning supervision practices. Grounded in SLT, the exploratory case study employed an open-ended questionnaire to gather data from the students participating in the support programme. The findings revealed the positive impact of innovative practices on candidates' academic development and overall research experience. The findings further demonstrated that virtual communication tools have significantly enhanced collaboration between candidates and supervisors, breaking down geographical barriers and facilitating real-time feedback and guidance. The innovative multimodal OdeL supervision practices gave master's and doctoral candidates flexibility and increased their learning engagement.

Conducting an investigation on the needs and experiences of doing Reflective Practice (RP) by Indonesian EFL teachers, this article exposes three main points: EFL teachers' needs for RP model, their understanding and previous experiences of conducting RP, and a proposed RP model with the integration of Lesson Study (LS) principles. All data were collected through a closed and open-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and focus group discussion involving 125 EFL teachers, 3 school principals, and 3 supervisors. The data reveal that the majority of the teachers, principals, and supervisors admitted that RP in EFL context is highly needed to evaluate the instructional documents as well as the teaching and learning processes that can be carried out before, during, and after the class ends. However, their understandings of RP and their previous and present practices of teaching reflection are limited. For example, the practice of their reflection-after-lesson only requests the students to give comments on the teacher's performance. While peer collaboration is highly recommended in LS, it is the principal and supervisor's visit/supervision that is considered collaborative reflection by the teachers. Hence, a holistic and integrative RP model with LS principles for EFL classrooms needs to be specifically designed and developed that is appropriate with Indonesian cultural teaching context.

In a time when the construction industry shares the challenge of labour shortage, more attention should be paid to how attractive careers in the construction field are in the first place. The constantly evolving working environment is causing significant changes in careers and career management in the field, leading to the need to explore company practices that can contribute to the development of fulfilling careers. In this research, we investigated how supervisors in construction companies perceive career support for their employees. This was a phenomenographic study in which 23 supervisors of five construction companies in Finland were interviewed. The analysis showed that the supervisors' perceptions could be categorized into six support types varying between company, professionally, and individually oriented perspectives. Based on the analysis, needs for continuous learning in the construction field can be identified more broadly, highlighting also the various opportunities to advance careers in the field.

The study investigated how clinical supervision affects the personal and professional development of first-time supervisees. The explanatory sequential mixed methods research design was employed in the study. Quantitative data was collected using a single group pretest-posttest experimental design to evaluate the impact of supervision on the personal and professional development of counselors in training. Individual interviews were conducted with 51 volunteer participants who were counselors in training at a state university in western Türkiye. Paired-sample t-tests were used to analyze the quantitative data, while content analysis was employed for the qualitative data. The findings showed that supervision significantly enhanced the counselors in training's effective counselor characteristics and self-awareness management strategies. However, there were no significant differences in hindering self-awareness and professional disposition. The qualitative analysis revealed that counselors in training who participated in supervision gained a deeper understanding of counseling procedures and techniques, increased trust in the profession, and improved self-efficacy. Counselors in training also highlighted the positive impact of their supervisor and group supervision format on their development. The results of the study suggest the significance of supervision in counselor education. It is recommended that the variables included in the current research and the effect of supervision should be examined in more studies.

This scoping review explored university supervisors' roles, responsibilities, challenges, and changes over 70 years. Using the PRISMA-ScR method and 90 analyzed publications, the results yielded articles from every decade and from educator preparation programs across the United States. The findings highlight historical perspectives and controversies surrounding field supervision. These include influences throughout the decades from areas outside education, including psychology and business. Finally, recommendations for preparing and elevating the role of university supervisors are shared.

Over the past 2 decades, worldwide research has established that the district office of education matters. Various policy initiatives are directing district offices to shift from limited managerial functions and begin to directly support learner instruction. The intention of this article, therefore, was to tease the question: How do school inspectors provide instructional leadership support to schools in Zimbabwe? Guided by the instructional leadership conceptual framework, we employed a qualitative research methodology in which we used 2 case studies focusing on 6 officers purposively drawn from 2 district offices in the Masvingo province of Zimbabwe. Data collection tools used were document analysis and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that school inspectors carried out school staffing; spearheaded need-driven circuit-level and district-level professional development; instituted supervision of schools; supported school development efforts; and ensured stakeholder and partner engagement. But school inspectors provided limited support to scaffold learner instruction. To improve district instructional leadership support at school level, we recommend strategic human and material resource mobilisation and utilisation. Inevitably, more research is needed to allow deeper insight into the observed inadequacies of the current district office in Zimbabwe.

In this theoretical paper we explore the authorial voice of black African postgraduate students in their writing and scholarship experience. This includes investigating the undergirding factors that need to be interrogated when it comes to the student-supervisor relationship. Some (if not most) black African postgraduate students experience challenges in respect of expressing or formulating that all-important authorial voice in their studies, possibly due to a failure to convey ideas, thoughts and arguments systematically. In addition, cultural identity and academic requirements may be hindrances, making it more difficult for them to write successfully, and to engage appropriately in their postgraduate research journeys. In the process of postgraduate students unearthing their authorial voice, a qualitative approach was adopted in this desktop study. In terms of the theoretical framework, the critical pedagogy of Freire was used to examine this phenomenon. Freire's theory underscores the fact that supervisors cannot simply see themselves imposing their views on those who are less knowledgeable about authorial voice. The findings of this work lean towards highlighting that the student, to a large degree, are to be blamed for this oversight, because without giving students any agency in the supervision journey, supervisors tend to reproduce their experience.

Due to the marginalization of supervision (Butler, et al., 2023; Nolan, 2022) and few frameworks to conceptualize supervision in teacher preparation, educational supervision of clinical experiences receives less attention and fewer resources, which perpetuates its marginalization. It is imperative that scholars develop additional theoretical models or constructs to improve the understanding and practice of supervision to elevate its status beyond technical helping. In this paper, we draw upon several sources in the instructional supervision literature to re-conceptualize commonly used images of supervisors in teacher education. In addition to traditional conceptions (The Critic, the Popular Parent, the Co-Inquirer), we 'introduce' two new images, The Advocate and The Contemplative, to reflect changes and movements in education. These images can serve as one theoretical model or construct to improve understanding and practice of supervision to elevate its status.

The purpose of this study is to investigate challenges and tensions encountered by university supervisors working with student teachers in dual language immersion (DLI) settings. Despite the growth of Utah's statewide DLI program, Utah university teacher programs have few faculty members familiar with the partner cultures and languages of Utah's DLI model. Drawing from a larger multiple case study, this study examines three non-Chinese university supervisors' written reflections and focus group transcripts during supervision in Chinese DLI classrooms. Findings suggest the challenges and tensions encountered by these supervisors were not just cultural in nature; at times, university supervisors were unfamiliar with the DLI model and/or unsure of whether challenges were products of cultural differences, the DLI program, or other influences.

Work-integrated learning (WIL), as an educational approach, is facilitated through relationships between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and external 'host' organizations. Responsible host organizations should recognize that students undertaking WIL come from a range of different cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, and have varying academic, physical, and other capabilities. An inclusive workplace will seek to facilitate a positive and rewarding experience for all WIL students. Recent WIL literature has seen a strong focus on inclusive access to WIL. This article examines key elements that can contribute to host organizations providing an inclusive environment for students. Socio-cultural theories related to learning in the workplace are used as a theoretical lens. An Inclusive WIL Workplace Framework is proposed, highlighting principles, practices, and supervisor and co-worker characteristics, that can be utilized by workplaces to assess their inclusivity and address any gaps, and by students to understand the expectations of HEIs on host organizations.

This mixed-methods observational pilot study compared clinician-supervisor and student satisfaction (surveys and semi-structured interviews), and final placement scores for two different physiotherapy clinical placement models: hybrid (half-onsite, half-remote) and traditional (onsite). All supervisors and students involved were invited to participate; ten supervisors and seven students completed the survey, and nine supervisors and one student participated in interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Students and supervisors reported similar levels of satisfaction for either model. Supervisors reported some reservations and higher workloads with the hybrid model. The interviews identified three themes for satisfying placements: it is structure, not location that matters; managing competing demands on clinician-supervisors; and learning requires psychologically safe relationships. Final scores for both placement models were comparable. This pilot study with a small sample found the hybrid model was acceptable and achieved comparable outcomes to the traditional model. Remote structured learning has potential to innovate and support sustainable clinical placements.

There are a substantial number of Certified Hand Therapists reaching retirement age in the next decade, however, there are few newer graduates who are pursuing this specialty. Students' lack of clinical knowledge has shown to be a barrier to successfully completing a hand therapy fieldwork affiliation. The purpose of the study is to investigate: (1) the perceptions of the clinicians working in hand therapy and students regarding the integration of hand therapy content in entry-level occupational therapy programs, and (2) the perceptions of both groups as to which content is deemed essential for a successful hand therapy fieldwork placement. This study utilized a survey design. Data was collected from 207 clinicians and 25 students via SurveyMonkey. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared analysis, and t-test analysis via R studio statistical software. Participants placed the highest emphasis on foundational knowledge when ranking topic importance, which included muscular anatomy, skeletal anatomy, nervous system anatomy, palpation, and surface anatomy. Greater than 90% of participants (n=186 clinicians; n=23 students) also felt topics including kinesiology, biomechanics, tissue healing principles, fractures, tendinopathies, goniometry, and orthotic fabrication and training were very important to student success in hand therapy. Results also indicated that the greater number of students a clinician supervised, the higher they ranked student knowledge and skill level (p=0.02). These clinicians also reported stronger feelings that students would benefit from additional hand therapy curriculum content (p=0.053). Further study of the variability among occupational therapy curricula may be warranted, as well as studying the knowledge level needed with certain topics, and the level of independence needed with specific clinical skills to promote success in hand therapy.

Higher education often acts as a bridge to society, preparing people for future social, political, and economic roles. For many academics, social justice and social inclusion are areas of research interest and teaching expertise. As such, institutions of higher education are well placed to foster reflection on social justice, through research and teaching, and thereby impact the wider society as students take up their roles within it. Yet, higher education itself should be subject to critique from a social justice point of view. Our aim in this article is to provide one such critique. We will focus on PhD research supervision, and in particular the supervisor/supervisee relationship. We will argue that the hierarchical nature of supervision can give rise to injustice. We will use the concepts of epistemic injustice and epistemic power as explanatory tools to clarify what is at issue within dysfunctional supervisor/supervisee relationships. Throughout, we will make use of the mythological story, "The Salmon of Knowledge," to unpack the hierarchies involved in knowledge acquisition/creation. Finally, we will conclude by noting the space within the scholarship of teaching and learning wherein critique of the structures within higher education from a social justice point of view occur, and where there exist potential gaps in this scholarship.

Inclusive work-integrated learning (WIL) requires collaboration between universities, host organizations and students, particularly, when designing and delivering WIL for students with disabilities. Host organizations, however, are not often included in the collaborations. This study explored host organization knowledge, capacity and challenges to providing WIL experiences for students with disability. A case study multi-method approach comprising an online survey and focus groups was undertaken. Host organizations, represented by supervisors, providing WIL to students enrolled in health courses at two Australian higher education institutions participated. The perceived need for student disclosure, office building limitations, and host organization limited knowledge of WIL expectations, training and student needs impeded the development and provision of optimal WIL experiences for students with disability. A strengths-based approach is proposed to improve the inclusion of host organizations in stakeholder collaborations, their capacity and confidence to support students with disability on WIL and to provide relatable student WIL experiences.

Skills in interdisciplinary collaboration are required to address many complex problems facing society. As such, interdisciplinarity is a critical competency for students to develop. However, teachers' effectiveness in teaching interdisciplinarity is often hindered by silo structures within university faculties. To address this in the Experts in Teamwork (EiT) programme, a MSc in a Norwegian university that develops students' interdisciplinary teamwork skills through projects that address real-world challenges, a community of practice (CoP) evolved among teachers from different EiT classes. Over 20 months, CoP members participated in digital and in-person discussions, lecture exchanges, student and professional conferences, and coevaluation of student work, with an aim of better understanding interdisciplinarity and approaches for teaching it to students. The success of the CoP in achieving these aims was evaluated through a series of focus groups consisting of members of the CoP. The CoP achieved some success in fostering pedagogical conversations that were transformative for participants' understanding of interdisciplinarity in their practice. Participants reported that CoP participation influenced their interactions with students, ultimately helping students to develop a better understanding of interdisciplinarity. However, participants reported limitations in the CoP as a professional development resource, citing its newness and the required time commitment. Participants felt that these issues could be addressed via greater institutional support.

Three focus groups were conducted with internship supervisors from the summer of 2019. Student survey data was used to identify concerns from the student perspective to inform the supervisor focus group questions. In addition to the questions, a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis was also used to collect qualitative data within the supervisor focus groups. Findings suggest areas of strength that can be used in marketing as well as opportunities for program improvement.

The three missions of universities are education, research, and knowledge/technology transfer. At the micro-level of the research and knowledge/technology transfer mission, we position researchers, as individuals who decided to pursue a scientific career in academia, with the PhD as the starting point. While existing literature acknowledges the supervisor's significance during this process from dependency to autonomy, this paper advocates for a closer examination of external factors such as the network, supervisor's experience, and work environment in idea generation. Ideas in this context encompass both curiosity-driven and entrepreneurial concepts, often evolving from one to the other. Our research builds upon the theory of opportunity identification, drawing parallels between ideas and opportunities. The research asserts that PhD students primarily rely on their networks for idea generation due to limited prior knowledge and experience. Our findings underscore the dynamic interplay between PhD students, supervisors, and networks in the process of idea generation, advancing a comprehensive framework encapsulating the multifaceted influences on the trajectory from idea generation to execution in the context of PhD education. The framework is based on empirical evidence from a qualitative case study comprising 16 PhD students in a European H2020 project in the field of Photonics, illuminating the intricate relationship between supervisors' orientations (entrepreneurial or curiosity-driven) and the types of ideas generated by PhD students. Practical implications highlight the need for tailored support and resources to foster independent research capabilities among PhD students, considering individual variations in supervisory support and networking opportunities.

Background: Postdoctoral training holds an increasingly important place in preparation for leading academic and research positions. While little empirical research has described postdoctoral training beyond the sciences, across all fields, "misaligned expectations" are often touted as a key source of postdoctoral strife. Purpose/Hypothesis: This article describes mentorship competency beliefs within engineering and computer science fields, which increasingly engage in postdoctoral training. Design/Method: An embedded mixed-methods design was used to quantitatively identify mentorship profiles from survey data using latent profile analysis (LPA) from a sample of n = 118 postdoctoral scholars and n = 165 postdoctoral supervisors. Qualitative thematic analysis of interviews with n = 29 postdoctoral scholars and n = 20 postdoctoral supervisors was used to identify meaning in the differences between quantitative profiles. The combination of LPA with thematic analysis enabled the triangulation of distinct postdoctoral mentorship profile definitions. Results: LPA identified six postdoctoral fellow profiles and four supervisor profiles, which became clearly definable through thematic analysis. Postdoc profiles included Technical Manager, Autonomy Focused Advisor, Stretched Mentor, Well-Rounded Mentor, Exemplar Mentor, and Leader-Mentor, while supervisor profiles included Autonomous Mentor, Reflective Mentor, Research Lab Mentor, and Confident Leader-Mentor. Some of these are aligned, but several are not, giving insight into the phenomenon of "misaligned expectations" in postdoctoral literature. Conclusions: The mentorship profiles illustrate the misalignment in expectations, which leads to negative mentorship experiences for many postdoctoral scholars.

This study focuses on the changes that doctoral education has experienced in the last decades and discusses the role of doctoral supervisors. The figure of doctoral supervisor continues to be a subject of much debate; therefore, the aim of this study is to provide a universal, global, and common definition that clearly establishes the roles and functions of doctoral supervisors. Employing a multi-method approach, the study utilized the perspectives of linguistic relativism and prototype theory to understand how linguistic and label diversity may influence the perception and approach to supervisory tasks. We examine a corpus of 55 different labels to refer to "doctoral supervisor." Data was collected from 116 countries, encompassing 47 different languages and 55 distinct labels from Europe, Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania, forming a unique corpus of information. The results reveal a total of 18 functions to be fulfilled by the doctoral supervisor. Additionally, the findings underscore the significance of linguistic influence in conceptualizing the functions associated with the supervisor in various cultural contexts and highlight the necessity for redefining the role of the thesis supervisor. The results hold potential benefits for doctoral schools and supervisors, serving as guidelines for standardizing the functions of the doctoral supervisor.

The Chinese government has been actively recruiting foreign-trained Chinese scholars to return to China since the Chinese brain drain began. Japan is among the most popular destinations for Chinese scholars seeking to receive doctoral training. This study explores the factors contributing to the stratification of Japanese-trained Chinese PhDs' academic career attainments using the Mertonian norm of universalism. The results indicate that the norm of universalism can partly explain the stratification of Japanese-trained Chinese PhDs. The reason for this is that their higher pre-graduation productivity enhances the chance that Japanese-trained Chinese PhDs have of obtaining an academic position at a top university in China. In addition to pre-graduation academic productivity, other factors, including the prestige of the university attended, the duration of the academic sojourn in Japan, and the ethnicity of the supervisor influence employment outcomes.

Workplace bullying refers to the aggressive behavior and mistreatment towards an employee from peers and/or superiors. When this behavior takes place frequently and for long duration, it causes a high level of stress in the employee, in turn causing direct and indirect damage to the organization. The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a massive shift from the physical office environment to the work-from-home situation. As the face-to-face interactions between the employees were replaced by video conferencing and other technology-induced interactions, it was expected that the problem of workplace bullying will disappear or will be reduced to a great extent. Instead, the incidents of harassment by colleagues and superiors continue to be reported by employees who are working from home. Organizations are most likely to continue with the work-from-home arrangements even after the easing of the pandemic situation. In this likelihood, developing a comprehensive understanding of bullying in the remote workplace assumes vital significance. The paper uses the case study approach to explore the elements involved in the bullying of remote employees. Analysis of remote bullying incidents from various perspectives revealed that the harassment experienced by the employees in the remote workplace displays all the elements of workplace bullying. Research on the concept and manifestation of remote bullying is in a nascent stage. The study holds significant implications for policymakers and organizations.

This article suggests ways in which teacher supervisors and trainers on short courses can reposition their role by making the feedback conference more collaborative and trainee-led. The authors argue that by taking a more dialogic approach and exploring critical incidents, trainee teachers can develop reflective skills and take more ownership of their development.

A pedagogical dilemma occurs when an in-class event or external factor challenges a teacher's principles or instructional practices and compels the teacher to resolve the dilemma. This article focuses on how resolving dilemmas can enhance the conceptual understanding of both student teachers and their supervisors. The supervisory setting this article describes--university instructors in Japan supervising preservice and in-service teachers--has not been extensively researched. The article presents three case studies: two on supervising preservice teachers and one on supervising an in-service teacher. Although approaches to supervision emphasize the facilitative aspect, the case studies of the preservice teachers exhibited circumstances more conducive to a directive-oriented approach. Nevertheless, with the assistance of the supervisors, the preservice teachers were able to develop episodic knowledge of pedagogical concepts through navigating the dilemmas they experienced. The case study with the in-service teacher, on the other hand, required a more facilitative approach to supervision. It suggests that the supervisor should understand and accommodate the pedagogical concepts under which the teacher operates to provide useful support in resolving classroom-based dilemmas.

To determine factors affecting successful research and publication among medical students, a cross-sectional survey study was carried out at four Thai medical schools during 2018-2022. Medical students who had previously performed research under research advisors' supervision and their research advisors were included. There were 120 participants, 78 medical students and 42 research advisors. The most common problems reported by the students were student's lack of knowledge of research design (78%) and research topic (53%), while the most common problems reported by the advisors were student's lack of knowledge of research topic (55%) and how to prepare documents for ethics committee approval (48%). The promoting factors for research success commonly reported by the students and advisors were "an advisor helps with protocol writing and reviewing the manuscript", "research teaching in the curriculum", "provision of an example of a written ethics committee protocol", and "arranging a special session so that advisors can talk to students about their research of interest". Among the 78 participating students, 20 (26%) had successfully published their research in journals. These 20 students were more likely than those without publications to be from an institute that had a special research project or conference for medical students (20% vs. 0%,) and to suggest that teaching protocol writing helped in promoting research success (70% vs. 43%). These findings suggest that teaching research, a special research project or conference for medical students, and faculty development of research advising could potentially increase the success rate of students' research publications.

Stakeholders in exam-driven countries are responsible for developing test-related tasks to assess the quality of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning. Hence, the language assessment literacy (LAL) of different stakeholders has to be investigated. This mixed-methods study explored the required LAL competencies among two groups of Egyptian EFL supervisors and teachers and examined the impact of participants' demographic profiles on choosing LAL competencies. The groups prioritized their needs for assessment in language pedagogy. While supervisors were highly demanded to develop and administer language assessments, teachers were highly interested in developing their skills at assessment scoring and rating. Teachers' selection of LAL competencies was influenced by age, educational degree and professional training; whereas supervisors' LAL was impacted by experience and educational degree. The findings of interviews shed light on participants' perceived needs for LAL knowledge and skills, the challenges of achieving LAL, and ways for improvement.

Prompted to discover what makes a good graduate student supervisor, scholars from two large research universities conducted a qualitative study in which alumni of the institutions' student affairs preparation programs were asked to nominate exceptional supervisors they had as graduate students. Nominated supervisors were invited to interview and share their experiences supervising graduate students. The supervisors interviewed displayed adaptability, individualization, and a focus on graduate student learning. More often than not, this went hand-in-hand with granting graduate students the agency to handle projects that took them out of their comfort zones. Many supervisors also emphasized relationship-building with their graduate students. They considered this to be integral to building mutual trust and respect. Overall, these supervisors created an individualized work experience that focused on student learning, agency, and mutually positive and trusting relationships. Equipped with a sense of outstanding supervisor/ee relationships and practices based upon the findings of the study, this article offers suggestions developed to address how graduate students can make the most of their supervisory experience.

The role of principal supervisor has been shifting from a focus on management to one that emphasizes support for principals. External partners can sometimes help with redesigning the role and other aspects of district organization. However, most research focuses on large urban districts with role conceptions and organizational structures that are not easily applied to midsized districts. In this study, we leverage contingency theory as a way to consider how contextual difference might matter in the use of principal supervisors to support and develop principals of underperforming schools. We interviewed district superintendents, principal supervisors, and principals in five mid-sized districts partnered with USSP, an in-service educational systems leadership provider with research evidence of impact on student achievement outcomes. We found that mid-sized districts commonly prioritized characteristics and traits regularly associated with good principal supervisors, but they were limited by district size and context in how they could initiate change. Despite some differences in how districts established the principal supervisor role, participants across levels described how principal supervisors were supported and, in turn, supported principals in intensive ways. Study results suggest that reorienting the principal supervisor's role, even in mid-sized districts, can build leadership capacity of principals leading underperforming schools.

The study evaluated the suitability of primary school teachers' professional development policy implementation conceptualization of targets, reflective contents, process, methods and contexts in which it occurs in Oromia. The researchers used a mixed method with concurrent triangulation design. The researchers selected a total of 618 samples of the study using different sampling techniques such as purposive, convenience, stratified and simple random sampling techniques. The data were collected from primary sources of data such as teachers, mentors, principals, supervisors, coordinating committees and parents using questionnaires, interview, focus group discussion, document examination and observation. Then, the researchers analyzed the data using mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA and post hock test, and thematic narration. The study showed that both veteran and novice teachers were less able to conceptualize and contextualize their professional development practices to the existing phenomena in the schools under investigation. Teachers' professional development practices were powerless to update professional competencies and improve professional and innovative pedagogical practices in classrooms. In addition, the professional development contents and activities were repetitive from time to time. Primary school teachers were not learning proficiently from continuous professional development practices to ensure basic and specific professional competencies required in classrooms. The implementations of reflective activities such as action researches, classroom observation, differentiate learning; collaborative learning, microteaching and lesson studies couldn't contribute to practical changes. Teachers weren't actively participating in professional development because of lack of conceptualization and contextualization of reflective activities to improve professional competencies although they are transformative intellectuals. Therefore, teachers, mentors, principals, and cluster supervisors should use face-to-face learning and digital learning strategies to improve instructional practices in classrooms, and values and prestige of teaching profession. Likewise, the study forecasts the requirement of context specific policy framework and practical toolkit for newly deployed and experienced teachers rather than focusing on the generic policy document.

Postgraduate research students (PGRs) experience disproportionately high levels of psychological distress. Many factors contribute to this poor mental wellbeing and relate to each other in complex and dynamic ways. However, the relationship between PGRs and their supervisor(s) is known to strongly affect the wellbeing of the former. This study explores the mental health and wellbeing of PGRs with a focus on the role of the student--supervisor relationship. Using combined qualitative data from a large survey of PGRs and focus groups and reflexive thematic analysis, we found that PGRs experience the overarching process of obtaining a research degree as a mental labyrinth. Three constituent themes were identified: (1) inequity in navigating the labyrinth, (2) the labyrinth as a place of uncertainty and isolation, and (3) supervisors as labyrinth guides, not mental care providers. The results suggest that significant inequities exist which contribute to poorer mental wellbeing in particular subgroups of PGRs, both in general and specifically in relation to the supervisory relationship. Experiences of loneliness and ambiguity around progress were also identified as being detrimental to mental health. Furthermore, although supervisors can be a vital source of support and have a positive influence on PGR mental health, students recognise supervisors cannot reasonably be expected to act as professional mental health care providers and institutions must do more to provide equitable access to mental health support services.

This research examined the direct and indirect links of supervisory working alliance on supervisory satisfaction. Participants were 291 supervisees who had participated in individual counseling practicum courses either in undergraduate or graduate Psychological Counseling and Guidance program in Turkish universities. Data were collected using the Brief Form of the Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (BSWAI-T), Supervisee Disclosure in Supervision Scale (SDSS), and Supervisory Satisfaction Questionnaire (SSQ). Research results indicated that supervisory working alliance made direct contributions to supervisory satisfaction. In addition, the supervisory working alliance contributed indirectly to supervisory satisfaction via supervisee disclosure in supervision. Supervisory working alliance and supervisee disclosure in supervision explained 56% of the variance in supervisory satisfaction. This study offers novel insights into the role of supervisee disclosure in supervision as an underlying mechanism that operates on the influence of supervisory working alliance on supervisory satisfaction. Implications for the supervision process and counselor training are discussed.

The aim of this study is to share the experiences and the collaborations carried out within the sector during the pandemic period, in a graduation project which is focused on university-industry cooperation - in order to make the role of the designer in the sector more effective, to transform education into a comprehensive sectoral experience for students and to offer the sector the experience of working with the designer at Department of Industrial Design, Eskisehir Technical University. The method of the research is a case study examining by designing it with a holistic single-case design since it is a single, representative, and typical case. In the case study, the research group consists of the students who were enrolled in the 2019-2020 spring term graduation project course, academic supervisors and company mentors at Eskisehir Technical University, Turkiye. The result of the study is that pandemic opened the door to new educational experiences for design academics, students and companies. This sharp bend mainly affected the implementation processes of one-on-one lessons, just like the design studio, which we define as the heart of design education. It has also paved the way for different online interactive educational tools and platforms to be used for the educational components of the design of the process.

High levels of stress among supervisors can diminish afterschool program quality and negatively affect the learning and development of children and youth. One solution may be training in emotional intelligence. In other fields, high emotional intelligence among leaders was found to mitigate workplace stress and to increase job productivity, job satisfaction, and attainment of positive results. This study helps address the lack of scientific research on the role of emotional intelligence in afterschool supervisors' ability to manage stress at work. In this quantitative correlational study, the author investigated the relationship between the emotional intelligence of afterschool supervisors serving low-income communities in New York City and their perceived workplace stress. The study found a negative correlation--that is, supervisors with higher emotional intelligence tended to have lower workplace stress. The results can help afterschool supervisors and organization leaders understand the importance of emotional intelligence for effective program management.

This study aimed to determine the degree of availability of comprehensive quality standards (objectives, content, management, the role of academic supervisors, the role of the kindergarten headmistress, the role of cooperative teachers, the assessment of the practicum) for improvement the practicum training of the Kindergarten program in Saudi Arabia, and the statistically significant differences in the degree of availability among these standards according to geographic location, cultural, social, environmental factors and GPA (grade point average). The study adopted the interpretive analysis to collect data through questionnaire with seven (7) criteria and detailed aspect for each criterion. The respondents were chosen forty-eight (48) students in the eight (8th) level of the Kindergarten program. The respondents' gathered data were tabulated and computed by the statistical means that were classified into three levels; high, moderate and low, and to identify the differences of students' average responses, face validity, Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient and ANOVA one-way analysis of variance were used. An analysis of students' open answers was also conducted. Results revealed the program's strengths and weaknesses. There were no statistically significant differences in the degree of availability among the comprehensive quality standards according to location, cultural, social, environmental factors and GPA. In light of the analysis results, we recommended reconsidering the different aspects of the current practicum training to meet the requirements of the specified comprehensive quality standards.

The PhD confirmation, or upgrade stage, is a key requirement and rite of passage for most doctoral students. Yet despite its significance and high-stakes nature, little attention has been paid to students' experiences of this stage of the PhD journey and how it influences the development of their researcher identity. Through semi-structured interviews with PhD students from a range of disciplines who had recently successfully completed the confirmation stage, we found that for many the confirmation stage was a catalyst for 'feeling' like a researcher through external validation, recognition and legitimacy. Students also developed their researcher identity through talking about their research with significant others. We argue for recognising the pivotal role the confirmation stage plays in developing doctoral students' researcher identity and offer suggestions on how supervisors and researcher developers can support students through this transition.

This study aims at exploring communication practices between students and supervisors in thesis projects. The study conducted a comparison between face-to-face and mediated communication through the use of emails. The researcher used the autobiographical reflection to document examples of information communicated during the two interactions. Furthermore, it utilized semi-structured interviews with three students who were conducting their thesis in the Information Studies Department at Kuwait University. Then, the researcher conducted interviews with four students' from other masters' programs. The study used a qualitative method to analyze the results. The findings showed that students used face-to-face meetings and mediated communication to seek different types of information. The topics discussed varied between the face-to-face and mediated interaction. Face-to-face communication was perceived as more effective and productive, while mediated communication was easier and faster. Students used e-mails to set appointments with their supervisors, ask questions and get feedback on assignments. Students faced some communication barriers such as difficulty of sense-making and experiencing the "black-hole" phenomenon. The study suggested applying an electronic supervision system to facilitate students' communication with their supervisors. This study has practical significance as it helps students and supervisors interact successfully during different thesis writing stages.

Support from industry professionals is essential to meet the increasing demand for high-quality work-integrated learning (WIL) that forms a core component of university curriculum in various health professions. This qualitative study used an online survey to investigate the current landscape of exercise science and physiology WIL opportunities in Australia, building from a previous 2013 study. Factors were identified from 76 practicum supervisors that restrict and promote willingness to provide WIL opportunities, with recommendations made on how to better support and engage current and future supervisors. Fifteen factors were identified that influenced supervisor WIL engagement, with four factors reported as 'promote', six factors reported as 'restrict' and five factors identified as promoting and restricting. Using these findings, recommendations were made around five key issues related to supporting sustainable, engaging future WIL opportunities. An update was also provided on status of recommendations resulting from the 2013 research and remaining areas for action.

In the United Kingdom (U.K.), all students who are studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree need to complete a piece of independent research in order to gain their "honours" (U.S. "honors") status. As a university faculty we have very specific ideas about the purpose of this research and the positive impact that we hope that it will have upon the U.K. settings (mainly schools and kindergartens) in which it is carried out, which we discuss in this article. Although our approach would appear successful, this judgement has so far been based upon the evidence of the final, summative project alone. Obtaining a small amount of funding from the university for students to act as co-researchers provided the ideal opportunity to explore the topic further by collecting empirical data from students and settings. Because our original plans for data collection were disrupted by COVID-19, we gained responses through an anonymous survey which enabled frank responses from both students and staff in settings. Although the data collected was, overall, encouraging, it did raise some issues for us, as faculty tutors, to consider. These include the way that we convey the importance of students carrying out their projects "independently" (that is, without university supervisor intervention) to settings themselves, and how we ensure that the students collaborate with settings at "all" stages of the project.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed an immense amount of stress on student affairs professionals, who were exposed to numerous potentially traumatic events as a result of changing workplace environments, health and safety risks, and their emotional support of students. This study explored the impact of supervisor emotional maturity on supervisee trauma exposure response through the mediating effect of psychological safety for a sample of student affairs professionals employed at 4-year institutions. Results indicated that supervisees who felt that their supervisors were more emotionally mature felt more psychologically safe and that this psychological safety predicted lower adverse reactions to both primary and secondary traumatic stress in workplace contexts. Implications for the training and development of student affairs supervisors are explored, as well as for further research into the construct of emotional maturity as it relates to supervision.

The provision of support has always been central to the role of the undergraduate dissertation (UD) supervisor, but little research has been done on its contextual determinants in web-facilitated contexts. Beyond the general recognition of the importance of institutional support for the development of supervisors' technological and pedagogical knowledge and the importance of technology and pedagogy in maximizing the impact of supervisors' support for students, the effect of technology tools and students' prior skills on the type and level of supervisors' support is not well understood. Drawing partially on the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, the present work uses Partial-Least Square Structural Equation Modelling to examine the effect of supervisors' Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK), their perception of students' soft skills, and the technology tools they use (face-to-face, social media or a learning management system) on the level of educational and motivational support they provide. The results indicate that institutional support to UD supervisors positively affects their TPK, which in turn positively affects their educational and motivational support to students. However, supervisors' educational and motivational support is inversely related to their perception of students' soft skills and is also affected by the technological tools used. In short, supervision styles are not static since different contextual factors affect the management of the process of supervision. The implications for UD supervision are discussed, and some recommendations are proposed in the article.

Supervision is an integral part of the language teacher education process which plays a significant role in improving teachers' teaching practice. This study explores Kuwaiti English as a foreign language (EFL) female student teachers' perspective on the performance of their supervisors during the practicum course. It sought to explore the general perspectives associated with supervisors' supervision competencies with the view to informing improvements to their instructional supervisory skills. 50 EFL female student teachers from CBE participated in the study. Using a case study approach, a combination of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews was used to generate answers to the research questions. The questionnaire findings suggested that student teachers generally have positive attitudes towards their supervisors' competencies; however, interviews with participants have shed light on various issues that need to be considered. For example, supervisors' feedback often focuses on participants' Content Knowledge (CK) rarely addressing their Pedagogical Content knowledge (PCK). In addition, student-teachers stated that their relationships with their supervisors tended to be formal and authoritative, which prevented them from asking questions freely. This article discusses these findings in detail and highlights some practical implications that are likely to help EFL supervisors to enhance their supervisory practices.

Supervision and mentoring are highly relevant aspects of research integrity. Codes of Conduct, such as the ALLEA code of conduct, stipulate the relevance of training researchers how to conduct research well and about the role supervision plays in preventing unacceptable research practices. The Dutch Code of Conduct, for example, explicitly states that universities are responsible for facilitating training about research integrity. We developed a course for supervisors to address their responsibility and role in training early career researchers in research integrity. This contribution describes what evidence base was used to design this course and how the course is experienced by supervisors who participated in its piloting in early 2022. A total of 147 subscribed to the course in the testing phase, and seventeen participants obtained a certificate. The main lessons from the experiences with this course and the literature are: 1) to tailor supervisor courses to the small amounts of time that supervisors can schedule to take these courses and to adjust the content and assignments to their needs, 2) to make online courses very attractive, but that need to be combined with3) a face-to-face meeting to motivate them to finish the course in time and it might help to enable shared reflection by sharing personal experiences.

Preservice teachers undertake mandatory professional experience as part of their journey towards classroom readiness and inservice teaching. Supporting them in this process are supervisors who both guide and assess these novices. Central to this assessment are the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, which need to be rigorously applied to ensure quality teaching graduates. This article investigates the application of these Standards by the supervisors in both their formative and summative assessment. Data are derived from interviews with final year preservice teachers and supervisors in a primary teaching degree course at one Western Australian university. Findings suggest that there is scope for a more detailed and consistent application of the Standards. The paper argues for the development of a model of supervision to ensure consistent evaluations against the Standards, as recommended by the Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group.

This paper reports on a multi-site case study of work-integrated learning (WIL) in language teacher education. Using learning trajectories as a lens for understanding the connection between the workplace and campus-based learning, this study explores what preservice teachers learn from real-world work experience. The data used for this study comprised semi-structured interviews. The interviews engaged preservice teachers, and workplace supervisors involved in WIL programs for preservice teachers teaching English in Vietnam, and Chinese in Australia. The findings of the study show that preservice teachers make progress in learning transformation, engage in reciprocal learning with peers, and contribute to learners' authentic learning experiences. The results highlight the features of preservice teachers' learning trajectories including work readiness, critical thinking skills, and insights into working with learners of diverse backgrounds. The study has implications for research in initial teacher education programs, employability, internationalization of higher education, and equity/inclusivity.

The purpose of this research was to determine whether supervisor support (SS) plays a moderating role in the perception of overqualification (POQ) on workplace loneliness (WL) among music teachers in Turkey. The research was based on the assumption that loneliness, which is a negative emotional state and expresses employees' inability to establish a healthy relationship within the organisation, may arise from music teachers' perceived overqualification and can be shaped with the support of this relationship. With this study we discovered that perceived overqualification has a definite and significant impact on WL. It was also discovered that supervisor support moderated the relationship between perceived overqualification and WL. Consequently, although music teachers felt overqualified, they did not feel lonely at work if their supervisor provided strong support.
