We implement a recent characterization of metaphysical indeterminacy in the context of orthodox quantum theory, developing the syntax and semantics of two propositional logics equipped with determinacy and indeterminacy operators. These logics, which extend a novel semantics for standard quantum logic that accounts for Hilbert spaces with superselection sectors, preserve different desirable features of quantum logic and logics of indeterminacy. In addition to comparing the relative advantages of the two, we also explain how each logic answers Williamson’s challenge to any substantive account of (in)determinacy: For any proposition p, what could the difference between “p” and “it’s determinate that p” ever amount to?

Can quantum theory provide examples of metaphysical indeterminacy, indeterminacy that obtains in the world itself, independently of how one represents the world in language or thought? We provide a positive answer assuming just one constraint of orthodox quantum theory: the eigenstate-eigenvalue link. Our account adds a modal condition to preclude spurious indeterminacy in the presence of superselection sectors. No other extant account of metaphysical indeterminacy in quantum theory meets these demands.

A recent development in quantum chemistry has established the quantum mutual information between orbitals as a major descriptor of electronic structure. This has already facilitated remarkable improvements of numerical methods and may lead to a more comprehensive foundation for chemical bonding theory. Building on this promising development, our work provides a refined discussion of quantum information theoretical concepts by introducing the physical correlation and its separation into classical and quantum parts as distinctive quantifiers of electronic structure. In particular, we succeed in quantifying the entanglement. Intriguingly, our results for different molecules reveal that the total correlation between orbitals is mainly classical, raising questions about the general significance of entanglement in chemical bonding. Our work also shows that implementing the fundamental particle number superselection rule, so far not accounted for in quantum chemistry, removes a major part of correlation and entanglement previously seen. We show that the Aharonov–Bohm effect finds a natural description in the setting of QFT on curved spacetimes in terms of superselection sectors of local observables. The extension of the analysis of superselection sectors from Minkowski spacetime to an arbitrary globally hyperbolic spacetime unveils the presence of a new quantum number labelling charged superselection sectors. In the present paper, we show that this “topological” quantum number amounts to the presence of a background flat potential which rules the behaviour of charges when transported along paths as in the Aharonov–Bohm effect. To confirm these abstract results, we quantize the Dirac field in the presence of a background flat potential and show that the Aharonov–Bohm phase gives an irreducible representation of the fundamental group of the spacetime labelling the charged sectors of the Dirac field. We also show that non-Abelian generalizations of this effect are possible only on spacetimes with a non-Abelian fundamental group.

The quantum Gauss Law as an interacting field equation is a prominent feature of QED with eminent impact on its algebraic and superselection structure. It forces charged particles to be accompanied by "photon clouds" that cannot be realized in the Fock space, and prevents them from having a sharp mass. Because it entails the possibility of "measurement of charges at a distance", it is well-known to be in conflict with locality of charged fields in a Hilbert space. We show how a new approach to QED advocated by the authors, that avoids indefinite metric and ghosts, can secure causality and achieve Gauss' Law along with all its nontrivial consequences. Catalysts are substances that assist transformation of other resourceful objects without being consumed in the process. However, the fact that their ``catalytic power'' is limited and can be depleted is often overlooked, especially in the recently developing theories on catalysis of quantum randomness utilizing building correlation with catalyst. In this work, we establish a resource theory of one-shot catalytic randomness in which uncorrelatedness is consumed in catalysis of randomness. We do so by completely characterizing bipartite unitary operators that can be used to implement catalysis of randomness using partial transpose. By doing so, we find that every catalytic channel is factorizable, and therefore there exists a unital channel that is not catalytic. We define a family of catalytic entropies that quantifies catalytically extractable R\'enyi entropies from a quantum state and show how much the degeneracy of a quantum state can boost the catalytic entropy beyond its ordinary entropy. Based on this, we demonstrate that a randomness source can be actually exhausted after a certain amount of randomness is extracted. We apply this theory to systems under superselection rules that forbids superposition of certain quantum states and find that nonmaximally mixed states can yield the maximal catalytic entropy. We discuss implications of this theory to various topics, including catalytic randomness absorption, the no-secret theorem, and the possibility of multiparty infinite catalysis.

A reasonable quantum information theory for fermions must respect the parity super-selection rule to comply with the special theory of relativity and the no-signaling principle. This rule restricts the possibility of any quantum state to have a superposition between even and odd parity fermionic states. It thereby characterizes the set of physically allowed fermionic quantum states. Here we introduce the physically allowed quantum operations, in congruence with the parity super-selection rule, that map the set of allowed fermionic states onto itself. We first introduce unitary and projective measurement operations of the fermionic states. We further extend the formalism to general quantum operations in the forms of Stinespring dilation, operator-sum representation, and axiomatic completely-positive-trace-preserving maps. We explicitly show the equivalence between these three representations of fermionic quantum operations. We have previously shown (arXiv:1912.00033) that three approaches to relational quantum dynamics -- relational Dirac observables, the Page-Wootters formalism and quantum deparametrizations -- are equivalent. Here we show that this `trinity' of relational quantum dynamics holds in relativistic settings per frequency superselection sector. We ascribe the time according to the clock subsystem to a POVM which is covariant with respect to its (quadratic) Hamiltonian. This differs from the usual choice of a self-adjoint clock observable conjugate to the clock momentum. It also resolves Kucha\v{r}'s criticism that the Page-Wootters formalism yields incorrect localization probabilities for the relativistic particle when conditioning on a Minkowski time operator. We show that conditioning instead on the covariant clock POVM results in a Newton-Wigner type localization probability commonly used in relativistic quantum mechanics. By establishing the equivalence mentioned above, we also assign a consistent conditional-probability interpretation to relational observables and deparametrizations. Finally, we expand a recent method of changing temporal reference frames, and show how to transform states and observables frequency-sector-wise. We use this method to discuss an indirect clock self-reference effect and explore the state and temporal frame-dependence of the task of comparing and synchronizing different quantum clocks., Comment: 28+7 pages

The basic aspects of the Aharonov-Bohm effect can be summarized by the remark that wavefunctions become sections of a line bundle with a flat connection (that is, a "flat potential"). Passing at the level of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, we study the Dirac field interacting with a classical (background) flat potential and show that it can be interpreted as a topological sector of the observable net of free Dirac field. On the converse, starting from a topological sector we reconstruct a classical flat potential, interpreted as an interaction of a Dirac field. This leads to a description of Aharonov-Bohm-type effects in terms of localized observables., 16 pages; a report on a work in progress with C. Dappiaggi and G. We study the ground-state entanglement of gapped domain walls between topologically ordered systems in two spatial dimensions. We derive a universal correction to the ground-state entanglement entropy, which is equal to the logarithm of the total quantum dimension of a set of superselection sectors localized on the domain wall. Restricting the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded tensor product of Clifford algebras $C\ell_4\hat{\otimes}C\ell_6 $ to the particle subspace allows a natural definition of the Higgs field $\Phi$, the scalar part of Quillen's superconnection, as an element of $C\ell_4^1$. We emphasize the role of the exactly conserved weak hypercharge Y, promoted here to a superselection rule for both observables and gauge transformations. This yields a change of the definition of the particle subspace adopted in recent work with Michel Dubois-Violette \cite{DT20}; here we exclude the zero eigensubspace of Y consisting of the sterile (anti)neutrinos which are allowed to mix. One thus modifies the Lie superalgebra generated by the Higgs field. Quantum tomography is an important tool for the characterization of quantum operations. In this paper we present a framework of quantum tomography in fermionic systems. Compared with qubit systems, fermions obey the superselection rule, which sets constraints on states, processes, and measurements in a fermionic system. As a result, we can only partly reconstruct an operation that acts on a subset of fermion modes and the full reconstruction always requires at least one ancillary fermion mode in addition to the subset. We also report a protocol for the full reconstruction based on gates in a Majorana-fermion quantum computer, including a set of circuits for realizing the informationally complete state preparation and measurement.

Molecular matter-wave interferometry enables novel strategies for manipulating the internal mechanical motion of complex molecules. Here, we show how chiral molecules can be prepared in a quantum superposition of two enantiomers by far-field matter-wave diffraction and how the resulting tunneling dynamics can be observed. We determine the impact of rovibrational phase averaging and propose a setup for sensing enantiomer-dependent forces, parity-violating weak interactions, and environment-induced superselection of handedness, as suggested to resolve Hund's paradox. Using ab initio tunneling calculations, we identify [4]-helicene derivatives as promising candidates to implement the proposal with state-of-the-art techniques. Here we show that two Bloch states, which are energy eigenstates of a quantum periodic potential problem, with different wavevectors can not be linearly superposed to display quantum interference of any kind that captures the relative phase between them. This is due to the existence of a superselection rule in these systems, whose origin lies in the discrete translation symmetry. A topological reason leading to such a superselection is found. A temporal analogue of this superselection rule in periodically driven quantum systems is also uncovered, which forbids the coherent superposition of any two quasi-periodic Floquet states with different quasienergies., Comment: 7 pages, no figures

We derive the projection hypothesis in projective quantum measurement by restricting the set of observables. This projection hypothesis accompanies a bipartite system with the von Neumann-type interaction, which consists of a quantum mechanical system, with a meter variable to be measured, and a quantum field theoretically macroscopic extended object, that is, a spatiotemporally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate in quantum field theory with the quantum coordinate, that is, the zero-energy Goldstone mode(s) of the spontaneously broken global spatial translational symmetry. We describe a simple model for quantum interference of a single photon in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer using the Heisenberg picture. Our purpose is to show that the description in the Heisenberg picture is local just like in the case of the classical electromagnetic field, the only difference being that the electric and the magnetic fields are, in the quantum case, operators representing quantum observables. We then consider a simple model for a single-electron Mach-Zehnder interferometer and explain what the appropriate Heisenberg picture treatment is in this case. Interestingly, the parity superselection rule that arises in fermions due to the different spin statistics forces us to describe the electron in a radically different way to the photon in order to preserve the account in terms of local observables. A model using only local quantum observables of fermionic modes (such as the current operator) is nevertheless still viable to describe phase acquisition. We discuss how to extend this local analysis to coupled fermionic and bosonic fields within the same local formalism of quantum electrodynamics as formulated in the Heisenberg picture.

I develop a theory of symplectic reduction that applies to bounded regions in electromagnetism and Yang–Mills theories. In this theory gauge-covariant superselection sectors for the electric flux through the boundary of the region play a central role: within such sectors, there exists a natural, canonically defined, symplectic structure for the reduced Yang–Mills theory. This symplectic structure does not require the inclusion of any new degrees of freedom. In the non-Abelian case, it also supports a family of Hamiltonian vector fields, which I call “flux rotations,” generated by smeared, Poisson-non-commutative, electric fluxes. Since the action of flux rotations affects the total energy of the system, I argue that flux rotations fail to be dynamical symmetries of Yang–Mills theory restricted to a region. I also consider the possibility of defining a symplectic structure on the union of all superselection sectors. We reformulate recent insights into black hole information in a manner emphasizing operationally-defined notions of entropy, Lorentz-signature descriptions, and asymptotically flat spacetimes. With the help of replica wormholes, we find that experiments of asymptotic observers are consistent with black holes as unitary quantum systems, with density of states given by the Bekenstein-Hawking formula. However, this comes at the cost of superselection sectors associated with the state of baby universes. Spacetimes studied by Polchinski and Strominger in 1994 provide a simple illustration of the associated concepts and techniques, and we argue them to be a natural late-time extrapolation of replica wormholes. We investigate the entanglement-renormalization group flows of translation-invariant topological stabilizer models in three dimensions. Fracton models are observed to bifurcate under entanglement renormalization, generically returning at least one copy of the original model. Based on this behavior we formulate the notion of bifurcated equivalence for fracton phases, generalizing foliated fracton equivalence. The notion of quotient superselection sectors is also generalized accordingly. We calculate bifurcating entanglement-renormalization group flows for a wide range of examples and, based on those results, propose conjectures regarding the classification of translation-invariant topological stabilizer models in three dimensions., Comment: 22+16 pages, 14 figures, 1+3 tables, 3 supplementary files

We use an entanglement measure that respects the superselection of particle number to study the non-local properties of symmetry-protected topological edge states. Considering half-filled M-leg Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladders as an example, we show that the topological properties and the operational entanglement extractable from the boundaries are intimately connected. Topological phases with at least two filled edge states have the potential to realize genuine, non-bipartite, many-body entanglement which can be transferred to a quantum register. The entanglement is extractable when the filled edge states are sufficiently localized on the lattice sites controlled by the users. We show, furthermore, that the onset of entanglement between the edges can be inferred from local particle number spectroscopy alone and present an experimental protocol to study the breaking of Bell's inequality., Final version, minor changes

Classical evaluations of configurations of intertwined quantum contexts induce relations, such as true-implies-false, true-implies-true, but also nonseparability among the input and output terminals. We reconstruct finite-dimensional quantum theory with superselection rules, which can describe hybrid quantum-classical systems, from four purely operational postulates: symmetric sharpness, complete mixing, filtering, and local equality. It has been shown that each of the classical and fully quantum theories is singled out by an additional postulate.

This work provides a comprehensive approach to analyze the entanglement between subsystems generated by identical particles, based on the symmetric/exterior algebra (SEA) and microcausality. Our method amends the no-labeling approach (NLA) to quantify any type of identical particles' entanglement, especially fermions with the parity superselection rule. We can analyze the non-local properties of identical particles' states in a fundamentally equivalent way to those for non-identical particles, which is achieved by the factorizability of the total Hilbert space of identical particles. Some quantum field theories show, in a fundamental or an effective manner, an alternative between a loss of duality for algebras of operators corresponding to complementary regions, or a loss of additivity. In this latter case, the algebra contains some operator that is not generated locally, in the former, the entropies of complementary regions do not coincide. Typically, these features are related to the incompleteness of the operator content of the theory, or, in other words, to the existence of superselection sectors. We review some aspects of the mathematical literature on superselection sectors aiming attention to the physical picture and focusing on the consequences for entanglement entropy (EE). For purposes of clarity, the whole discussion is divided into two parts according to the superselection sectors classification: The present part I is devoted to superselection sectors arising from global symmetries, and the forthcoming part II will consider those arising from local symmetries. Under this perspective, here restricted to global symmetries, we study in detail different cases such as models with finite and Lie group symmetry as well as with spontaneous symmetry breaking or excited states. We illustrate the general results with simple examples. As an important application, we argue the features of holographic entanglement entropy correspond to a picture of a sub-theory with a large number of superselection sectors and suggest some ways in which this identification could be made more precise., 87 pages, 7 figures

The operator algebra of fermionic modes is isomorphic to that of qubits, the difference between them is twofold: the embedding of subalgebras corresponding to mode subsets and multiqubit subsystems on the one hand, and the parity superselection in the fermionic case on the other. We discuss these two fundamental differences extensively, and illustrate these through the Jordan--Wigner representation in a coherent, self-contained, pedagogical way, from the point of view of quantum information theory. Our perspective leads us to develop useful new tools for the treatment of fermionic systems, such as the fermionic (quasi-)tensor product, fermionic canonical embedding, fermionic partial trace, fermionic products of maps and fermionic embeddings of maps. We formulate these by direct, easily applicable formulas, without mode permutations, for arbitrary partitionings of the modes. It is also shown that fermionic reduced states can be calculated by the fermionic partial trace, containing the proper phase factors. We also consider variants of the notions of fermionic mode correlation and entanglement, which can be endowed with the usual, local operation based motivation, if the parity superselection rule is imposed. We reexamine the vacuum structure of three-dimensional quantum chromodynamics (QCD$_3$) with gauge group $SU(N)$, $N_f$ fundamental quark flavors, and a level-$k$ Chern-Simons term. This analysis can be reliably carried out in the large-$N$, fixed $N_f, k$ limit of the theory, up to certain assumptions that we spell out explicitly. At leading order in the large-$N$ expansion we find $N_f + 1$ distinct, exactly degenerate vacuum superselection sectors with different patterns of flavor-symmetry breaking. The associated massless Nambu-Goldstone bosons are generically accompanied by topological Chern-Simons theories. This set of vacua contains many candidate phases previously proposed for QCD$_3$. At subleading order in the large-$N$ expansion, the exact degeneracy between the different superselection sectors is lifted, leading to a multitude of metastable vacua. If we dial the quark masses, different metastable vacua can become the true vacuum of the theory, leading to a sequence of first-order phase transitions. This intricate large-$N$ dynamics can be captured by the previously proposed bosonic dual theories for QCD$_3$, provided these bosonic duals are furnished with a suitable scalar potential. We give a pedagogical introduction to algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT), with the aim of explaining its key structures and features. Topics covered include: algebraic formulations of quantum theory and the GNS representation theorem, the appearance of unitarily inequivalent representations in QFT (exemplified by the van Hove model), the main assumptions of AQFT and simple models thereof, the spectrum condition, Reeh–Schlieder theorem, split property, the universal type of local algebras, and the theory of superselection sectors. The abstract discussion is illustrated by concrete examples. One of our concerns is to explain various ways in which quantum field theory differs from quantum mechanics, not just in terms of technical detail, but in terms of physical content. The text is supplemented by exercises and appendices that enlarge on some of the relevant mathematical background. These notes are based on lectures given by CJF for the International Max Planck Research School at the Albert Einstein Institute, Golm (October, 2018) and by KR at the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore (January, 2019).

We develop a theory of gapped domain wall between topologically ordered systems in two spatial dimensions. We find a new type of superselection sector -- referred to as the parton sector -- that subdivides the known superselection sectors localized on gapped domain walls. Moreover, we introduce and study the properties of composite superselection sectors that are made out of the parton sectors. We explain a systematic method to define these sectors, their fusion spaces, and their fusion rules, by deriving nontrivial identities relating their quantum dimensions and fusion multiplicities. We propose a set of axioms regarding the ground state entanglement entropy of systems that can host gapped domain walls, generalizing the bulk axioms proposed in [B. Shi, K. Kato, and I. H. Kim, Ann. Phys. 418, 168164 (2020)]. Similar to our analysis in the bulk, we derive our main results by examining the self-consistency relations of an object called information convex set. As an application, we define an analog of topological entanglement entropy for gapped domain walls and derive its exact expression., Comment: 42 pages, 54 figures

A simple algebraic model with rules of isospin superselection is formulated and tested on few-nucleon systems. It is shown that physically obtainable states corresponding to the bound states of these nucleons can be gained by applying symmetrical monoidal C* categories whose objects are G-modules, and whose morphisms are G-invariant homomorphisms.

The simplest measurements in physics are binary; that is, they have only two possible results. An example is a beam splitter. One can take the output of a beam splitter and use it as the input of another beam splitter. The compound measurement is described by the product of the Hermitian matrices that describe the beam splitters. In the classical case, the Hermitian matrices commute (are diagonal) and the measurements can be taken in any order. The general quantum situation was described by Julian Schwinger with what is now known as “Schwinger’s Measurement Algebra”. We simplify his results by restriction to binary measurements and extend it to include classical as well as imperfect and thermal beam splitters. We use elementary methods to introduce advanced subjects such as geometric phase, Berry-Pancharatnam phase, superselection sectors, symmetries and applications to the identities of the Standard Model fermions.

We examine the construction of the spin angular momentum in systems with pseudoclassical Grassmann variables. In constrained systems there are many different algebraic forms for the dynamical variables that will all agree on the constraint surface. For the angular momentum, a particular form of the generators is preferred, which yields superselection sectors of irreducible spin^c(n) representations rather than reducible so(n) representations when quantized in the Schr\"odinger realization., Comment: 7 pages. We define and study a certain relative tensor product of subfactors over a modular tensor category. This gives a relative tensor product of two completely rational heterotic full local conformal nets with trivial superselection structures over a common chiral representation category. In particular, we have a new realization of fusion rules of modular invariants. We study the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation close to the Big-Bang. We argue that an interaction dominated fluid (speed of sound equal to the speed of light), if present, would dominate during such an early phase. Such a fluid with $p=\rho\propto1/a^{6}$ generates a term in the potential of the wave function of the WDW equation proportional to $-1/a^{2}.\ $This very peculiar quantum potential, which embodies a spontaneous breaking of dilatation invariance, has some very remarkable consequences for the wave function of the Universe: $\Psi(a)$ vanishes at the Big-Bang: $\Psi(0)=0$; the wave function $\Psi(a)$ is always real; a superselection rule assures that the system is confined to $a\geq0$ without the need of imposing any additional artificial barrier for unphysical negative $a$. For indistinguishable itinerant particles subject to a superselection rule fixing their total number, a portion of the entanglement entropy under a spatial bipartition of the ground state is due to particle fluctuations between subsystems and thus is inaccessible as a resource for quantum information processing. We quantify the remaining operationally accessible entanglement in a model of interacting spinless fermions on a one dimensional lattice via exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group. We find that the accessible entanglement exactly vanishes at the first order phase transition between a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and phase separated solid for attractive interactions and is maximal at the transition to the charge density wave for repulsive interactions. Throughout the phase diagram, we discuss the connection between the accessible entanglement entropy and the variance of the probability distribution describing intra-subregion particle number fluctuations., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, includes new references

We consider two alternative procedures which can be used to control the evolution of a generic finite-dimensional quantum system, one hinging upon a strong continuous coupling with a control potential and the other based on the application of frequently repeated pulses onto the system. Despite the practical and conceptual difference between them, they lead to the same dynamics, characterised by a partitioning of the Hilbert space into sectors among which transitions are inhibited by dynamical superselection rules.

The so-called information-thermodynamics link created by a thought experiment of Szilard became a core of the modern orthodoxy in the field of quantum information and resources theory in quantum thermodynamics. We remind existing objections against standard interpretation of Szilard engine operation and illustrate them by two quantum models: particle in a box with time-dependent thin potential barrier and the spin-boson model. The consequences of the emerging superselection rules for thermodynamics and foundations of quantum mechanics are discussed. The paper presents the methodological aspect of research on the problems of state and society evolution in the context of globalization. Within the framework of the St. Petersburg scientific school of social synergetics (V. P. Bransky school), these problems are included in the subject of eschatology, phenomenology and essentiology. The study is conducted on speculative models of society and the state, which functions and develops in the logic of the chosen gestalts. The main contradiction between management and self-organization is revealed, the source of macromutations in society (and the state), which is represented by the micro level of the evolution substrate (people, artifacts, production methods), is investigated. The principle of growth of the degree of synthesis of order and chaos, due to the desire of the system to maximize sustainability, is associated with the process of globalization, which leads, on the one hand, to strengthening order and responsibility at the macro level, and on the other, to individualization and freedom at the micro level. At the same time, the mechanism of social selection naturally develops into a mechanism of superselection. The state of the future is able to take over the function of superselection, becoming a global state.

It is physically expected that plane-wave configurations of the electron in QED induce disjoint representations of the algebra of the electromagnetic fields. This phenomenon of velocity superselection, which is one aspect of the infrared problem, is mathematically well established in non-relativistic (Pauli-Fierz type) models of QED. We show that velocity superselection can be resolved in such models by restricting the electron states to the subalgebra of the fields localized in the future lightcone. This actually follows from a more general statement about equivalence of GNS representations for coherent states of the algebra of the future lightcone in free electromagnetism. Recently a complete set of entropic conditions has been derived for the interconversion structure of states under quantum operations that respect a specified symmetry action, however the core structure of these conditions is still only partially understood. Here we develop a coarse-grained description with the aim of shedding light on both the structure and the complexity of this general problem. Specifically, we consider the degree to which one can associate a basic `shape' property to a quantum state or channel that captures coarse-grained data either for state interconversion or for the use of a state within a simulation protocol. We introduced in a previous paper a general notion of asymptotic morphism of a given local net of observables, which allows to describe the sectors of a corresponding scaling limit net. Here, as an application, we illustrate the general framework by analyzing the Schwinger model, which features confined charges. In particular, we explicitly construct asymptotic morphisms for these sectors in restriction to the subnet generated by the derivatives of the field and momentum at time zero. As a consequence, the confined charges of the Schwinger model are in principle accessible to observation. We also study the obstructions, that can be traced back to the infrared singular nature of the massless free field in d=2, to perform the same construction for the complete Schwinger model net. Finally, we exhibit asymptotic morphisms for the net generated by the massive free charged scalar field in four dimensions, where no infrared problems appear in the scaling limit., 36 pages; no figures

We consider an extended Bose-Hubbard model that includes pair-correlated tunneling. We demonstrate that a minimal four-mode implementation of this model exhibits a pair-correlated regime in addition to Mott insulator and superfluid regimes. We propose a low complexity variational subspace for the ground state of the system in the pair-correlated regime, which we find to be numerically exact in pure pair-tunneling limit. Additionally, we propose a parameter-free high fidelity model wave function that qualitatively captures the features of the ground state in the pair-correlated regime. Although the operationally accessible entanglement vanishes deep inside the Mott insulator and superfluid regimes due to particle number conservation, we find that in the pure pair-correlated tunneling limit the accessible entanglement entropy grows logarithmically with the number of particles. Furthermore, we demonstrate that upon application of a unitary beamsplitter operation, the pair-correlated ground state is transformed into a state with completely accessible entanglement that is not limited by super-selection rules., 8 pages, 3 figures

Recently it was shown that continuous Matrix Product States (cMPS) cannot express the continuum limit state of any Matrix Product State (MPS), according to a certain natural definition of the latter. The missing element is a projector in the transfer matrix of the MPS. Here we provide a generalised ansatz of cMPS that is capable of expressing the continuum limit of any MPS. It consists of a sum of cMPS with different boundary conditions, each attached to an ancilla state. This new ansatz can be interpreted as the concatenation of a state which is at the closure of the set of cMPS together with a standard cMPS. The former can be seen as a cMPS in the thermodynamic limit, or with matrices of unbounded norm.
