An electromagnetic model is developed to study the impact of jacket in the characterization of a cable-in-conduit conductor. The model reproduces some unexpected qualitative behaviors of the voltage signals detected on the jacket.

This paper presents a detailed model for simulation of a Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system. SMES technology has the potential to bring real power storage characteristic to the utility transmission and distribution systems. The principle of SMES system operation is reviewed in this paper. To understand transient and dynamic performance of a SMES system, a detailed SMES system benchmark model is given with extensive simulation results. This system is demonstrated using an electromagnetic transient program--PSCAD/EMTDC. A study is conducted on the Finite Element models of Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes exposed to an AC transverse magnetic field with various orientations and current distribution in these tapes are calculated. The calculated current distribution in a twisted tape carrying AC transport current in a parallel or nearby parallel AC transverse magnetic field indicate that filaments are decoupled effectively to reduce the total AC loss.

A 1T cryocooler-cooled oxide superconducting pulsed coil, which is a 16 layer solenoidal coil wound with an interlayer-transposed 4-strand parallel conductor composed of Bi2223 multifilamentary flat wires is fabricated. The thermal properties of the cryocooler-cooled oxide superinducting pulsed coil is described, taking into account the heat generation of ac loss and flux-flow loss and the cooling capacity of a cryocooler Ac loss and the cooling capacity of the cryocooler have been studied.

The distributions of stress in force-balanced coils for the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) are analyzed by finite element method and the results by FEM are compared with the experiments and the analytic solutions of a two-dimensional ideal shell model.

A new shielding coil system of toroidal arrangement, which has low stray magnetic fields in ambient areas, is developed. Besides the toroidal systems of the circular elementary coil, those of D-shaped elementary coils, which have lower electromagnetic stress than circular one, are investigated.

The 7-T Force-Balanced Coil (FBC) which is a helically wound toroidal coil, is designed in order to demonstrate the validity of the FBC concept for high field superconducting magnets. The 7-T FBC is designed within an allowable radius whose maximum working stress within an allowable stress of the stabilizer of NbTi strand.

The 3MJ SMES is designed and fabricated to operate at 1000 amps in the cryogenic environment of 4.2 K. a bundle of brass sheets with optimized length/area ratio is used for the metal part of the current lead and it is connected to HTS current lead in series.

A conduction-cooled HTS coil wound with the conductors composed of four Ag-sheathed Bi223 tapes, which have no insulator and a CuNi tape coated with polyimide for reinforcement and insulation. The coil gathered an AC loss of 125.6 W, the temperature of the coil became stable approximately 200 sec after starting operation, which indicates that Ag-sheathed Bi223 coils have high thermal stability in AC operations and are suitable for AC applications.

A conduction cooled LTS pulse coil of 100 kJ class is developed by using a new winding method, in order to provide a principle actual proof of UPS-SMES of MW class as protection from momentary voltage drops.

Force Balanced Coil (FBC) is a helically wound toroidal coil which can control the distribution of working stresses and minimize the structure requirements. The results indicate that by applying the Force Balanced Coil (FBC) concept, superconducting magnets will be realized in smaller size.

A Superconducting Magnetic Storage Systems (SMES) configurations has attractive potential for power management and quality control, the fringe field from the SMES restricts its site location. The results are applied to the fringe fields of various SMES configurations such as a single solenoid coil, toroidal coil, axially displaced coil.

A Japanese national project to realize commercially feasible SMES for designated applications is promoted. Model coils for power system stabilization, load fluctuation compensation and frequency control are fabricated and tested.

A series of the R&D works on the radiation resistant magnets for the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) project is conducted at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization. The actual sized completely-inorganic radiation-resistance quadrupole magnet, designed for the 50 GeV proton beam transportation, is manufactured by using mineral insulation magnet cable (MIC).

Several different shell types Nb(sub 3)Sn coils are developed and installed in a mirror magnet configuration and tested at Fermilab. The results show that the previously suspect splice technique is adequate and is not responsible for the quench performance limitation.

New methods are developed in Europe through R & D to design high field accelerator magnet using Nb3Sn magnets. A brief history and the ongoing programs going on in Europe are discussed.

Recent improvement in Nb3Sn to develop high field superconducting accelerator magnets is done in USA. Highlights and challenges of the US R&D program are presented along with the status of conductor development

The superconducting current feeder system consists of 20 numbers 10 kA current leads assembled inside a specially designed cryostat, superconducting bus bars assembled in a vacuum duct with bends and the joint box interface in cryogenic environment at 4.5 K. The design, mechanical properties and hydraulic analysis of the Current Feeder System are described.

The instrument used for the heat load measurements, a Void Fraction Meter (VFM) is installed on a large superconducting magnet at CERN using cryogenics. The instrument constructed at CERN is calibrated in order to provide direct readings of heat loads.

An integrated flow distribution and control system is designed, installed and tested to control the flow rate in superconducting magnetic system SST-1. The cooling scheme of superconducting magnet system (SCMS) with the refrigerator/helium liquefier is described.

The Heating surge and temperature oscillation is analyzed in the poloidal field (PF) and toroidal field (TF) coils of Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR). The experimental results show that the maximum temperatures in TF and PF are about 5.7 K and 5.9 K respectively.

The Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device is a tokamak with a fully superconducting magnet system, which enables an advanced quasisteady-state operation. The effect of three-dimensional heat conduction and the eddy current loss in the vacuum chamber of KSTAR is described.

The HFML has developed a design for a 30 T resistive insert to combine with an 11 T superconducting outsert to a 40+ T hybrid magnet. Design tools from NHMFL in Tallahassee FL are used to optimize the magnetic field, staying well within limits of available conductor ultimate tensile strength.

Reporting the possible growth of YBCO /PCMO directly onto the Al2O3 substrates for application as a novel functional superconducting microwave device is presented. These results indicate that PCMO is a suitable magnetic buffer layer for YBCO growth on Al2O3.
