Abstract

In this study, we develop new reverse engineering (RE) techniques to identify the organization of the synaptic inputs generating firing patterns of populations of neurons. We tested these techniques in silico to allow rigorous evaluation of their effectiveness, using remarkably extensive parameter searches enabled by massively-parallel computation on supercomputers. We chose spinal motoneurons as our target neural system, since motoneurons process all motor commands and have well-established input-output properties. One set of simulated motoneurons was driven by 300,000+ simulated combinations of excitatory, inhibitory, and neuromodulatory inputs. Our goal was to determine if these firing patterns had sufficient information to allow RE identification of the input combinations. Like other neural systems, the motoneuron input-output system is likely non-unique. This non-uniqueness could potentially limit this RE approach, as many input combinations can produce similar outputs. However, our simulations revealed that firing patterns contained sufficient information to sharply restrict the solution space. Thus, our RE approach successfully generated estimates of the actual simulated patterns of excitation, inhibition, and neuromodulation, with variances accounted for ranging from 75–90%. It was striking that nonlinearities induced in firing patterns by the neuromodulation inputs did not impede RE, but instead generated distinctive features in firing patterns that aided RE. These simulations demonstrate the potential of this form of RE analysis. It is likely that the ever-increasing capacity of supercomputers will allow increasingly accurate RE of neuron inputs from their firing patterns from many neural systems.

Abstract

Species-habitat associations are correlative, can be quantified, and used for powerful inference. Nowadays, Species Distribution Models (SDMs) play a big role, e.g. using Machine Learning and AI algorithms, but their best-available technical opportunities remain still not used for their potential e.g. in the policy sector. Here we present Super SDMs that invoke ML, OA Big Data, and the Cloud with a workflow for the best-possible inference for the 300 + global squirrel species. Such global Big Data models are especially important for the many marginalized squirrel species and the high number of endangered and data-deficient species in the world, specifically in tropical regions. While our work shows common issues with SDMs and the maxent algorithm ('Shallow Learning'), here we present a multi-species Big Data SDM template for subsequent ensemble models and generic progress to tackle global species hotspot and coldspot assessments for a more inclusive and holistic inference. Abstract

It is often discussed that the fourth methodology for science research is "informatics". The first methodology is a theoretic approach, the second one is observation and/or experiment, and the third one is computer simulation. Informatics is a new methodology for data intensive science, which is a new concept based on the fact that most scientific data are digitalized and the amount of data is huge. The facilities to support informatics are cloud systems. Herein we propose a cloud system especially designed for science. The basic concepts, design, resources, implementation, and applications of the NICT science cloud are discussed.

19. Computational Fluid Dynamics to Flight: Recent Success Stories of X-Plane Design to Flight Test at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center.

Abstract

Several examples from the past decade of success stories involving the design and flight test of three true X-planes are described: in particular, X-plane design techniques that relied heavily upon computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Three specific examples chosen from the author's personal experience are presented: the X-36 Tailless Fighter Agility Research Aircraft, the X- 45A Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle, and, most recently, the X-48B Blended Wing Body Demonstrator Aircraft. An overview is presented of the uses of CFD analysis, comparisons and contrasts with wind tunnel testing, and information derived from the CFD analysis that directly related to successful flight test. Some lessons learned on the proper application, and misapplication, of CFD are illustrated. Finally, some highlights of the flight-test results of the three example X-planes are presented. Abstract: There are many analysis codes that analyze various aspects of plasma physics. However, most of them are FORTRAN programs that are written to be run in supercomputers. On the other hand, many scientists use GUI (graphical user interface)-based operating systems. For those who are not familiar with supercomputers, it is a difficult task to run analysis codes in supercomputers, and they often hesitate to use these programs to substantiate their ideas. Furthermore, these analysis codes are written for personal use, and the programmers do not expect these programs to be run by other users. In order to make these programs to be widely used by many users, the authors developed user-friendly interfaces using a Web interface. Since the Web browser is one of the most common applications, it is useful for both the users and developers. In order to realize interactive Web interface, AJAX technique is widely used, and the authors also adopted AJAX. To build such an AJAX based Web system, Ruby on Rails plays an important role in this system. Since this application framework, which is written in Ruby, abstracts the Web interfaces necessary to implement AJAX and database functions, it enables the programmers to efficiently develop the Web-based application. JAXA スーパーコンピュータシステムを地球観測データの処理に活用した効果を検証したので報告する．検証には約10年分のデータが蓄積されているAMSR-E を用いた．まず，処理データの品質について，ユーザーへ提供されている標準プロダクトと同等であることを検証し，問題ないことが確認された．検証の過程で，コンパイラやプロセッサに依存する課題，及び，アルゴリズムの数理モデルに依存する課題が発見されたので，将来へ向けた改良の可能性を考察する．次に処理性能の評価を行い，従来は約14か月を要していた全データの再処理を22日間以内の期間に短縮できることが示された．これにより，ユーザーへデータを提供する待ち期間を大幅に短縮できることが確認された．, The effect which utilizes the JAXA supercomputer system for processing of earth observation data has been studied. AMSR-E products, which are accumulated over 10 years till the present, were used for data. First, it was verified that the quality of the processing data by the supercomputer system was equivalent to the standard product offered to the users. In process of verification, the subjects depending on a compiler or a processor architecture and those depending on the mathematical model of an algorithm were found out. The possibility of the improvement towards the future was discussed about this point. Next, the processing performance was evaluated and we found that reprocessing of all the data in which about 14 months was required can be considerably shortened within 22-day duration. The Numerical Wind Tunnel (NWT) is under research and development by NAL-Fujitsu joint activity. it is a parallel computer system of distributed memory architecture composed of vector processors, whose goal is to perform CFD simulation about 100 times faster than FACOM VP400. In this paper we show three fundamental functions global data, parallel execution of DO-loop, and data decomposition and allocation, which the language-processor system has to provide in order to realize parallel execution on the NWT. We choose FORTRAN77 as a basic programming language for NWT and add some compiler directives to make effective use of the NWT. Çok sayıda matematiksel işlem yapılması gereken durumlarda tercihimiz genellikle yüksek işlem kapasitesine sahip bilgisayarlar olmuştur. Bilgisayarların işlem kapasitesindeki artış ise fiyat/performans oranını parabolik biçimde yükseltmektedir. Yüksek işlem gücüne sahip fakat pahalı bilgisayarlar yerine, nispeten daha yavaş birçok bilgisayara paralel olarak hesaplama yaptırmak, zaman ve maliyet açısından çok daha verimli olmaktadır. Elbette bu işlem yalnızca paralelleştirilebilen algoritmalar için geçerlidir. Grid Hesaplama Sistemleri ?Süper Bilgisayar? olarak da adlandırılan, çok sayıda bilgisayarın bir araya gelerek şekillendirdiği paralel ve dağıtık hesaplama sistemleridir. Bu çalışmamızda grid hesaplama sistemleri incelenerek, web servisleri yardımıyla bir grid hesaplama sistemi uygulaması geliştirilmiştir. Uygulamada belirli noktalar arasındaki en kısa yolu bulma problemi web servisleri kullanılarak paralel bir şekilde çözülmüş ve sonuçlar değerlendirilmiştir., In general, when we need to process a lot of complex procedures, we prefer computers which are well designed with high technology. However, improving the technology of computers increases the cost and the performance as a parabolic graphic. Whereas, using parallel processing with low technology computers is preferable, due to the processing time and cost. Of course, this is only acceptable for the algorithm that is suitable for parallel processing. Grid Computing Systems which are called "Super Computer" are parallel and distributed computing systems, that are formed a lot of computers. In this study, grid computing systems have been examined and an application of grid computing systems is developed with web services. In this application, the problem of finding the shortest path between certain dots is solved by parallel processing with web services and the results are then assessed.

35. On the methods and results of the solution for high-degree algebraic equations

Abstract

The results of the solution for high-degree algebraic equations have been shown and discussed, using conventional algorithms and a novel one. The normal subroutines enable algebraic equations of about 100 degrees to be solved. But the proposed algorithm can solve effectively polynominals with about tens of thousands degrees. This utilizes the Finite Bit Method and is not subject to overflow and underflow. And the computation time is approximately proportional to the square of the polynominal degree.

Abstract

System informational culture (SIC) has stated the next problem of post neo classical science man. How to educate trans disciplinary man of scienceful culture (universal professional) capable to interpret and model knowledge by means of perception of humanitarian (art) and rational science unity? Co evolution of human mind and anthropogenic environment of computer instrumental systems (IS) occurs as subjective objectization of natural science knowledge (NSK). Authors have constructed model of artificial intelligence system of universal usage (AIUU) which supports continuous tutoring with the aim to form subject of SIC. Traditional education and known e-learning approaches can’t cope with the task. Phenomenology of consciousness is grounded on development of rational part of mind. Classical universalities problem of philosophy has been resolved in the model with the help of human ability to glottogenes in semantic direction. In this way the language of categories (LC) has been discovered. AIUU functions on the principles of knowledge without premises and educated unknowledge in the form of mathesis universales of LC. It also uses the unity of human and NSK proper to inter discipline activity in the SIC. The system generates and maintains educational space of meanings in the form of personal ontological knowledge base (KBO). By means of KBO artificial intelligence adaptively helps student to investigate any field of knowledge. LC is applied to express semantic. Axiomatic method provides the unity of ideal (theory) and real (modeling in IS). Universal tutoring is stated to resolve the problem of any theory understanding by professional clearness reduction to its self evidence.
