Abstract In this paper, the terrain effect on parameter inversion performance of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) and polarimetric SAR interferometry (PolInSAR) are analysed first. Based on the analysis of the terrain effect on single pixel processing, the terrain effect between adjacent pixels is addressed for both PolSAR and PolInSAR image pairs. Through the analysis, the terrain effect should be considered not only for the single pixel data calibration but also for the adjacent pixels of PolSAR and PolInSAR parameter inversion processing. Therefore, combining with the geometric model correction of sloped‐random volume over ground, the terrain‐compensated procedure is proposed for PolInSAR parameter inversion. The parameter inversion performance is improved effectively with terrain effect consideration. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated by the PolSARPro simulated dataset and the real Phased Array L‐Band Synthetic aperture Radar (PALSAR) dataset.

The satellite–ground bistatic configuration, which uses geosynchronous synthetic aperture radar (GEO SAR) for illumination and ground equipment for reception, can achieve wide coverage, high revisit, and continuous illumination of interest areas. Based on the analysis of the signal characteristics of GEO satellite–ground bistatic SAR (GEO SG-BiSAR), it is found that the bistatic echo signal has problems of azimuth spectrum aliasing and 2-D spatial variability. Therefore, to overcome those problems, a novel SAR imaging method for a GEO SG-BiSAR system with severe azimuth spectrum aliasing and 2-D spatial variability is proposed. Firstly, based on the geometric configuration of the GEO SG-BiSAR system, the time-domain and frequency-domain expressions of the signal are derived in detail. Secondly, in order to avoid the increasing cost caused by traditional multi-channel reception technology and the processing burden caused by inter-channel errors, the azimuth deramping is executed to solve the azimuth spectrum aliasing of the signal under the special geometric structure of GEO SG-BiSAR. Thirdly, based on the investigation of azimuth and range spatial variability characteristics of GEO SG-BiSAR in the Range Doppler (RD) domain, the azimuth spatial variability correction strategy is proposed. The signal corrected by the correction strategy has the same migration characteristics as monostatic radar. Therefore, the traditional chirp scaling function (CSF) is also modified to solve the range spatial variability of the signal. Finally, the two-dimensional spectrum of GEO SG-BiSAR with modified chirp scaling processing is derived, followed by the SPECAN operation to obtain the focused SAR image. Furthermore, the completed flowchart is also given to display the main composed parts for GEO SG-BiSAR imaging. Both azimuth spectrum aliasing and 2-D spatial variability are taken into account in the imaging method. Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) data is inherently characterized by speckle noise, which significantly deteriorates certain aspects of the quality of the PolSAR data processing, including the polarimetric decomposition and target interpretation. With the rapid increase in PolSAR resolution, SAR images in complex natural and artificial scenes exhibit non-homogeneous characteristics, which creates an urgent demand for high-resolution PolSAR filters. To address these issues, a new adaptive PolSAR filter based on joint similarity measure criterion (JSMC) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a scale-adaptive filtering window is established in order to preserve the texture structure based on a multi-directional ratio edge detector. Secondly, the JSMC is proposed in order to accurately select homogeneous pixels; it describes pixel similarity based on both space distance and polarimetric distance. Thirdly, the homogeneous pixels are filtered based on statistical averaging. Finally, the airborne and spaceborne real data experiment results validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Compared with other filters, the filter proposed in this paper provides a better outcome for PolSAR data in speckle suppression, edge texture, and the preservation of polarimetric properties. We report a comparative study of the efficacy of immobilizing living bacteria by means of seven antibodies against bacterial surface antigens associated with Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium. The targeted bacterial antigens were CFA/I fimbriae, flagella, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and capsular F1 antigen. The best immobilization of S. Typhimurium was achieved with the antibody against CFA/I fimbriae. The immobilization of bacteria using antiflagellin showed significant enhancement if the flagella rotary motion was paralyzed. Of the four antibodies targeting LPS structures, only one, the antibody against the O-antigen polysaccharides, showed a relatively efficient bacterial immobilization. No bacterial immobilization was achieved using the antibody against F1 antigen, presumably because F1 protein can detach from the bacterial surface easily. The results suggest that an antibody for bacterial immunoimmobilization should target a surface antigen which extends out from the bacterial surface and is tightly attached to the bacterial cell wall. The microarrays of living S. Typhimurium cells immobilized in this manner remained viable and effective for at least 2 weeks in growth medium before a thick biofilm covered the whole surface.

Molecular preservation in non-avian dinosaurs is controversial. We present multiple lines of evidence that endogenous proteinaceous material is preserved in bone fragments and soft tissues from an 80-million-year-old Campanian hadrosaur, Brachylophosaurus canadensis [Museum of the Rockies (MOR) 2598]. Microstructural and immunological data are consistent with preservation of multiple bone matrix and vessel proteins, and phylogenetic analyses of Brochylophosourus collagen sequenced by mass spectrometry robustly support the bird-dinosaur clade, consistent with an endogenous source for these collagen peptides. These data complement earlier results from Tyrannosaurus rex (MOR 1125) and confirm that molecular preservation in Cretaceous dinosaurs is not a unique event.

As is well known, image coregistration, interferometric phase noise suppression, and phase unwrapping are three key processing procedures of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR). The three procedures are cascaded in the conventional processing flow of InSAR. Unlike the conventional processing flow, in this paper we propose a joint processing idea to carry out image coregistration, interferometric phase noise filtering, and phase unwrapping simultaneously based on subspace projection for muitibaseline InSAR systems. The joint processing method can perform the fine coregistration of all SAR images implicitly by extracting the correlation information in the neighboring pixel sets, suppress the phase noise by utilizing the orthogonality of the signal subspace and the corresponding noise subspace, and optimally estimate the unwrapped interferometric phases (or the terrain heights) by combining the pixel coherence and the baseline diversity of a multibaseline InSAR system. Simulated results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the joint processing method. In terrain observation by progressive scans’ synthetic aperture radar (TOPS SAR) imaging, 3-D acceleration of maneuvering platforms makes conventional unfolding methods no longer applicable. Moreover, when the burst is long enough, the approximation of frequency-domain algorithms exceeds the margin of error. To solve these problems, a modified extended range migration algorithm (ERMA) with generalized azimuth resampling is proposed in this letter. First, the regularized 2-D spectrum is reconstructed by an uniform acceleration compensation and unfolding operation. Subsequently, generalized resampling eliminates the spatially variant acceleration phase and equalizes the Doppler parameters of targets within the same range cell. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sometimes needs to be imaged with small time bandwidth product (TBP) for fast observation. As a real-time image algorithm, back-projection algorithm (BPA) is efficient for fast observation. However, compared with the frequency-domain algorithm, the influence of small TBP (STBP) on BPA has not been fully discussed. Thus, the performance of the original BPA on STBP SAR imaging is analyzed and an improved BPA for STBP imaging is proposed in this letter. Theoretical analysis indicates that STBP will cause the point spread function (PSF) distortion and azimuth spectrum ambiguity to the BPA imaging result. To deal with those problems, two parameters of the original BPA are modified in the improved BPA. The accumulating azimuth angle (AAA) is optimized first to calibrate the PSF distortion. Then, based on the azimuth-ambiguity-to-signal ratio (AASR), a BPA meshing criterion related to TBP is proposed to diminish azimuth spectrum ambiguity. The simulation and real data results demonstrate that the improved BPA is effective on undistorted PSF recovering and unambiguity spectrum maintaining, even when the TBP is down to 4.
