The UltraViolet imaging of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey Fields (UVCANDELS) program provides deep HST F275W and F435W imaging over four CANDELS fields (GOODS-N, GOODS-S, COSMOS, and EGS). We combine this newly acquired UV imaging with existing HST imaging from CANDELS as well as existing ancillary data to obtain robust photometric redshifts and reliable estimates for galaxy physical properties for over 150,000 galaxies in the $\sim$430 arcmin$^2$ UVCANDELS area. Here, we leverage the power of the new UV photometry to not only improve the photometric redshift measurements in these fields, but also constrain the full redshift probability distribution combining multiple redshift fitting tools. Furthermore, using the full UV-to-IR photometric dataset, we measure the galaxy physical properties by fitting templates from population synthesis models with two different parameterizations (flexible and fixed-form) of the star-formation histories (SFHs). Compared to the flexible SFH parametrization, we find that the fixed-form SFHs systematically underestimate the galaxy stellar masses, both at the low- ($\lesssim10^9 M_\odot$) and high- ($\gtrsim10^{10} M_\odot$) mass end, by as much as $\sim0.5$ dex. This underestimation is primarily due the limited ability of fixed-form SFH parameterization to simultaneously capture the chaotic nature of star-formation in these galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures; accepted to ApJS; catalogs available via MAST

We present an analysis of rest-frame UV colors of 17,243 galaxies at $z\sim2-4$ in the HST UVCANDELS fields: GOODS-N, GOODS-S, COSMOS, and EGS. Here, we study the rest-frame UV spectral slope, $\beta$, measured via model spectra obtained via spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, $\beta_{SED}$, and explore its correlation with various galaxy parameters (photometric redshift, UV magnitude, stellar mass, dust attenuation, star formation rate [SFR], and specific SFR) obtained via SED fitting with Dense Basis. We also obtain measurements for $\beta$ via photometric power-law fitting and compare them to our SED-fit-based results, finding good agreement on average. While we find little evolution in $\beta$ with redshift from $z=2-4$ for the full population, there are clear correlations between $\beta$ (and related parameters) when binned by stellar mass. For this sample, lower stellar mass galaxies (log[$M_*$] = 7.5-8.5 $M_\odot$) are typically bluer ($\beta_{SED}=-2.0\pm 0.2$ / $\beta_{PL} = -2.1\pm0.4$), fainter ($MUV = -17.8^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$) less dusty ($A{v}=0.4\pm0.1$ mag), exhibit lower rates of star formation (log[SFR]=$0.1\pm0.2 M_\odot/$ yr) and higher specific star formation rates (log[sSFR]=$-8.2\pm0.2 \ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$) than their high-mass counterparts. Higher-mass galaxies (log[$M_*$] $=10.0-12.0 \ M_\odot$) are on average redder ($\beta_{SED}=-0.9^{+0.8}_{-0.5}$ / $\beta_{PL}=-1.0^{+0.8}_{-0.5}$), brighter ($MUV=-19.6^{+1.0}_{-1.2}$), dustier ($Av = 0.9^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ mag), have higher SFRs (log[SFR]=$1.2^{+0.6}_{-1.1} M_\odot$ yr), and lower sSFRs (log[sSFR]=$-9.1^{+0.5}_{-1.1} {yr}^{-1}$). This study's substantial sample size provides a benchmark for demonstrating that the rest-frame UV spectral slope correlates with stellar mass-dependent galaxy characteristics at $z\sim2-4$, a relationship less discernible with smaller datasets typically available at higher redshifts., Comment: 16 pages, 5 tables, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

We use the Ultraviolet Imaging of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey fields (UVCANDELS) to measure half-light radii in the rest-frame far-UV for $\sim$16,000 disk-like galaxies over $0.5\leq z \leq 3$. We compare these results to rest-frame optical sizes that we measure in a self-consistent way and find that the stellar mass-size relation of disk galaxies is steeper in the rest-frame UV than in the optical across our entire redshift range. We show that this is mainly driven by massive galaxies ($\gtrsim10^{10}$M$_\odot$), which we find to also be among the most dusty. Our results are consistent with the literature and have commonly been interpreted as evidence of inside-out growth wherein galaxies form their central structures first. However, they could also suggest that the centers of massive galaxies are more heavily attenuated than their outskirts. We distinguish between these scenarios by modeling and selecting galaxies at $z=2$ from the VELA simulation suite in a way that is consistent with UVCANDELS. We show that the effects of dust alone can account for the size differences we measure at $z=2$. This indicates that, at different wavelengths, size differences and the different slopes of the stellar mass-size relation do not constitute evidence for inside-out growth., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 22 pages, 12 figures, and 4 tables

Observations of debris disks offer important insights into the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Though M dwarfs make up approximately 80% of nearby stars, very few M-dwarf debris disks have been studied in detail -- making it unclear how or if the information gleaned from studying debris disks around more massive stars extends to the more abundant M dwarf systems. We report the first scattered-light detection of the debris disk around the M4 star Fomalhaut C using JWST's Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam; 3.6$~\mu$m and 4.4$~\mu$m). This result adds to the prior sample of only four M-dwarf debris disks with detections in scattered light, and marks the latest spectral type and oldest star among them. The size and orientation of the disk in these data are generally consistent with the prior ALMA sub-mm detection. Though no companions are identified, these data provide strong constraints on their presence -- with sensitivity sufficient to recover sub-Saturn mass objects in the vicinity of the disk. This result illustrates the unique capability of JWST for uncovering elusive M-dwarf debris disks in scattered light, and lays the groundwork for deeper studies of such objects in the 2--5$~\mu$m regime., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We present the results of our search for Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting AGN at redshifts 2.3$\lesssim$z$\lesssim$4.9 from HST WFC3 F275W observations in the UVCANDELS fields. We also include LyC emission from AGN using HST WFC3 F225W, F275W, and F336W found in the ERS and HDUV data. We performed exhaustive queries of the Vizier database to locate AGN with high quality spectroscopic redshifts. In total, we found 51 AGN that met our criteria within the UVCANDELS and ERS footprints. Of these 51, we find 12 AGN had $\geq$4$\sigma$ detected LyC flux in the WFC3/UVIS images. Using space- and ground-based data from X-ray to radio, we fit the multi-wavelength photometric data of each AGN to a CIGALE SED and correlate various SED parameters to the LyC flux. KS-tests of the SED parameter distributions for the LyC-detected and non-detected AGN showed they are likely not distinct samples. However, we find that X-ray luminosity, star-formation onset age, and disk luminosity show strong correlations relative to their emitted LyC flux. We also find strong correlation of the LyC flux to several dust parameters, i.e., polar and toroidal dust emission, 6 $\mu m$ luminosity, and anti-correlation with metallicity and $A_{FUV}$. We simulate the LyC escape fraction ($f_{esc}$) using the CIGALE and IGM transmission models for the LyC-detected AGN and find an average $f_{esc}$$\simeq$18%, weighted by uncertainties. We stack the LyC flux of subsamples of AGN according to the wavelength continuum region in which they are detected and find no significant distinctions in their LyC emission, although our $sub-mm\ detected$ F336W sample shows the brightest stacked LyC flux. These findings indicate that LyC-production and -escape in AGN is more complicated than the simple assumption of thermal emission and a 100% escape fraction. UVCANDELS is a HST Cycle-26 Treasury Program awarded 164 orbits of primary ultraviolet (UV) F275W imaging and coordinated parallel optical F435W imaging in four CANDELS fields: GOODS-N, GOODS-S, EGS, and COSMOS, covering a total area of $\sim426$ arcmin$^2$. This is $\sim2.7$ times larger than the area covered by previous deep-field space UV data combined, reaching a depth of about 27 and 28 ABmag ($5\sigma$ in $0.2"$ apertures) for F275W and F435W, respectively. Along with the new photometric catalogs, we present an analysis of the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF), relying on our UV-optimized aperture photometry method yielding a factor of $1.5\times$ increase than the H-isophot aperture photometry in the signal-to-noise ratios of galaxies in our F275W imaging. Using well tested photometric redshift measurements we identify 5810 galaxies at redshifts $0.6

We test the relationship between UV-derived star formation rates (SFRs) and the 7.7 ${\mu}$m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) luminosities from the integrated emission of galaxies at z ~ 0 - 2. We utilize multi-band photometry covering 0.2 - 160 ${\mu}$m from HST, CFHT, JWST, Spitzer, and Herschel for galaxies in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey. We perform spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of these data to measure dust-corrected far-UV (FUV) luminosities, $L_{FUV}$, and UV-derived SFRs. We then fit SED models to the JWST/MIRI 7.7 - 21 ${\mu}$m CEERS data to derive rest-frame 7.7 ${\mu}$m luminosities, $L_{770}$, using the average flux density in the rest-frame MIRI F770W bandpass. We observe a correlation between $L_{770}$ and $L_{FUV}$, where log $L_{770}$ is proportional to (1.27+/-0.04) log $L_{FUV}$. $L_{770}$ diverges from this relation for galaxies at lower metallicities, lower dust obscuration, and for galaxies dominated by evolved stellar populations. We derive a "single-wavelength" SFR calibration for $L_{770}$ which has a scatter from model estimated SFRs (${{\sigma}_{{\Delta}SFR}}$) of 0.24 dex. We derive a "multi-wavelength" calibration for the linear combination of the observed FUV luminosity (uncorrected for dust) and the rest-frame 7.7 ${\mu}$m luminosity, which has a scatter of ${{\sigma}_{{\Delta}SFR}}$ = 0.21 dex. The relatively small decrease in ${\sigma}$ suggests this is near the systematic accuracy of the total SFRs using either calibration. These results demonstrate that the rest-frame 7.7 ${\mu}$m emission constrained by JWST/MIRI is a tracer of the SFR for distant galaxies to this accuracy, provided the galaxies are dominated by star-formation with moderate-to-high levels of attenuation and metallicity., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

The UltraViolet Imaging of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey Fields (UVCANDELS) survey is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cycle-26 Treasury Program, allocated in total 164 orbits of primary Wide-Field Camera 3 Ultraviolet and Visible light F275W imaging with coordinated parallel Advanced Camera for Surveys F435W imaging, on four of the five premier extragalactic survey fields: GOODS-N, GOODS-S, EGS, and COSMOS. We introduce this survey by presenting a thorough search for galaxies at $z\gtrsim2.4$ that leak significant Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation, as well as a stringent constraint on the LyC escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}$) from stacking the UV images of a population of star-forming galaxies with secure redshifts. Our extensive search for LyC emission and stacking analysis benefit from the catalogs of high-quality spectroscopic redshifts compiled from archival ground-based data and HST slitless spectroscopy, carefully vetted by dedicated visual inspection efforts. We report a sample of five galaxies as individual LyC leaker candidates, showing $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm rel}\gtrsim60\%$ estimated using detailed Monte Carlo analysis of intergalactic medium attenuation. We develop a robust stacking method to apply to five samples of in total 85 non-detection galaxies in the redshift range of $z\in[2.4,3.7]$. Most stacks give tight 2-$\sigma$ upper limits below $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm rel}<6\%$. A stack for a subset of 32 emission-line galaxies shows tentative LyC leakage detected at 2.9-$\sigma$, indicating $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm rel}=5.7\%$ at $z\sim2.65$, supporting the key role of such galaxies in contributing to the cosmic reionization and maintaining the UV ionization background. Giant star-forming clumps are a prominent feature of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and contain important clues on galaxy formation and evolution. However, basic demographics of clumps and their host galaxies remain uncertain. Using the HST/WFC3 F275W images from the Ultraviolet Imaging of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (UVCANDELS), we detect and analyze giant star-forming clumps in galaxies at 0.5 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 1, connecting two epochs when clumps are common (at cosmic high-noon, z $\sim$ 2) and rare (in the local universe). We construct a clump sample whose rest-frame 1600 {\AA} luminosity is 3 times higher than the most luminous local HII regions (M$_{UV} \leq -$16 AB). In our sample, 35 $\pm$ 3$\%$ of low-mass galaxies (log[M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}$] $<$ 10) are clumpy (i.e., containing at least one off-center clump). This fraction changes to 22 $\pm$ 3$\%$ and 22 $\pm$ 4$\%$ for intermediate (10 $\leq$ log[M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}$] $\leq$ 10.5) and high-mass (log[M$_{*}$/M$_{\odot}$] $>$ 10.5) galaxies in agreement with previous studies. When compared to similar-mass non-clumpy SFGs, low- and intermediate-mass clumpy SFGs tend to have higher SFRs and bluer rest-frame U-V colors, while high-mass clumpy SFGs tend to be larger than non-clumpy SFGs. However, clumpy and non-clumpy SFGs have similar S\'ersic index, indicating a similar underlying density profile. Furthermore, we investigate how UV luminosity of star-forming regions correlates with the physical properties of host galaxies. On average, more luminous star-forming regions reside in more luminous, smaller, and/or higher-specific SFR galaxies and are found closer to their hosts' galactic center., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

High-resolution imaging of galaxies in rest-frame UV has revealed the existence of giant star-forming clumps prevalent in high redshift galaxies. Studying these sub-structures provides important information about their formation and evolution and informs theoretical galaxy evolution models. We present a new method to identify clumps in galaxies' high-resolution rest-frame UV images. Using imaging data from CANDELS and UVCANDELS, we identify star-forming clumps in an HST/F160W$\leq 25$ AB mag sample of 6767 galaxies at $0.5\leq z\leq 3$ in four fields, GOODS-N, GOODS-S, EGS, and COSMOS. We use a low-pass band filter in Fourier space to reconstruct the background image of a galaxy and detect small-scale features (clumps) on the background-subtracted image. Clumpy galaxies are defined as those having at least one off-center clump that contributes a minimum of 10$\%$ of the galaxy's total rest-frame UV flux. We measure the fraction of clumpy galaxies ($\rm f_{clumpy}$) as a function of stellar mass, redshift, and galaxy environment. Our results indicate that $\rm f_{clumpy}$ increases with redshift, reaching $\sim 65\%$ at $z\sim 1.5$. We also find that $\rm f_{clumpy}$ in low-mass galaxies ($\rm 9.5\leq log(M_*/M_\odot)\leq 10$) is 10$\%$ higher compared to that of their high-mass counterparts ($\rm log(M_*/M_\odot)>10.5$). Moreover, we find no evidence of significant environmental dependence of $\rm f_{clumpy}$ for galaxies at the redshift range of this study. We present extremely deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF). This unique region of the sky contains two quasars at $z \approx$ 3.22 that are separated by only $\sim$500 kpc, providing a stereoscopic view of gas and galaxies in emission and absorption across $\sim$10 billion years of cosmic time. We have obtained 90 orbits of HST WFC3 G141 near-infrared grism spectroscopy of this field in a single pointing, as well as 142 hours of optical spectroscopy with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). The WFC3 (F140W, F125W, and F336W) and archival WFPC2 (F702W and F450W) imaging provides five-filter photometry that we use to detect 3,375 sources between $z \approx$ 0 - 6, including 1,536 objects in a deep central pointing with both spectroscopic and photometric coverage. The F140W and F336W mosaics reach exceptional depths of $m_\mathrm{AB}\approx$ 28 and 29, respectively, providing near-infrared and rest-frame ultraviolet information for 1,580 sources, and we reach 5$\sigma$ continuum detections for objects as faint as $m_\mathrm{AB}\approx$ 27 in the grism spectra. The extensive wavelength coverage of MUSE and WFC3 allows us to measure spectroscopic redshifts for 419 sources, down to galaxy stellar masses of log(M/M$_{\odot}$) $\approx$ 7 at $z \approx$ 1 - 2. In this publication, we provide the calibrated HST data and source catalogs as High Level Science Products for use by the community, which includes photometry, morphology, and redshift measurements that enable a variety of studies aimed at advancing our models of galaxy formation and evolution in different environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS on February 1, 2023. We present the mid-IR (MIR) morphologies for 64 star-forming galaxies at $0.210^{9}~M_\odot}$ using JWST MIRI observations from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey (CEERS). The MIRI bands span the MIR (7.7--21~$\mu$m), enabling us to measure the effective radii ($R_{\rm{eff}}$) and S\'{e}rsic indexes of these SFGs at rest-frame 6.2 and 7.7 $\mu$m, which contains strong emission from Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features, a well-established tracer of star formation in galaxies. We define a ``PAH-band'' as the MIRI bandpass that contains these features at the redshift of the galaxy. We then compare the galaxy morphologies in the PAH-bands to those in rest-frame Near-UV (NUV) using HST ACS/F435W or ACS/F606W and optical/near-IR using HST WFC3/F160W imaging from UVCANDELS and CANDELS, where the NUV-band and F160W trace the profile of (unobscured) massive stars and the stellar continuum, respectively. The $R_{\rm{eff}}$ of galaxies in the PAH-band are slightly smaller ($\sim$10\%) than those in F160W for galaxies with $\rm{M_*\gtrsim10^{9.5}~M_\odot}$ at $z\leq1.2$, but the PAH-band and F160W have a similar fractions of light within 1 kpc. In contrast, the $R_{\rm{eff}}$ of galaxies in the NUV-band are larger, with lower fractions of light within 1 kpc compared to F160W for galaxies at $z\leq1.2$. Using the MIRI data to estimate the $\rm{SFR_{\rm{IR}}}$ surface density, we find the correlation between the $\rm{SFR_{\rm{IR}}}$ surface density and stellar mass has a steeper slope than that of the $\rm{SFR_{\rm{UV}}}$ surface density and stellar mass, suggesting more massive galaxies having increasing amounts of obscured fraction of star formation in their inner regions. Tadpole galaxies are metal-poor dwarfs with typically one dominant star-forming region, giving them a head-tail structure when inclined. A metallicity drop in the head suggests that gas accretion with even lower metallicity stimulated the star formation. Here we present multiband HST WFC3 and ACS images of four nearby (<25 Mpc) tadpoles, SBS0, SBS1, Kiso 3867, and UM461, selected for their clear metallicity drops shown in previous spectroscopic studies. Properties of the star complexes and compact clusters are measured. Each galaxy contains from 3 to 10 young stellar complexes with 10^3-10^5 Msun of stars ~3-10 Myr old. Between the complexes, the disk has a typical age of ~3 Gyr. Numerous star clusters cover the galaxies, both inside and outside the complexes. The combined cluster mass function, made by normalizing the masses and counts before stacking, is a power law with a slope of -1.12+-0.14 on a log-log plot and the combined distribution function of cluster lifetime decays with age as t^{-0.65+-0.24}. A comparison between the summed theoretical Lyman continuum (LyC) emission from all the clusters, given their masses and ages, is comparable to or exceeds the LyC needed to excite the observed Halpha in some galaxies, suggesting LyC absorption by dust or undetected gas in the halo, or perhaps galaxy escape., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present a sample of four emission-line galaxies at $z=6.11-6.35$ that were serendipitously discovered using the commissioning data for the JWST/NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. One of them (at $z=6.11$) has been reported previously while the others are new discoveries. These sources are selected by the secure detections of both [O III] $\lambda$5007 and H$\alpha$ lines with other fainter lines tentatively detected in some cases (e.g., [O II] $\lambda$3727, [O III] $\lambda$4959). In the [O III]/H$\beta$ - [N II]/H$\alpha$ Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram, these galaxies occupy the same parameter space as that of $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies, indicating that they have been enriched rapidly to sub-solar metallicities ($\sim$0.4 $Z_{\odot}$), similar to galaxies with comparable stellar masses at much lower redshifts. The detection of strong H$\alpha$ lines suggests a higher ionizing photon production efficiency within galaxies in the early Universe. We find brightening of the [O III] $\lambda$5007 line luminosity function (LF) from $z=3$ to 6, and weak or no redshift evolution of the H$\alpha$ line LF from $z=2$ to 6. Both LFs are under-predicted at $z\sim6$ by a factor of $\sim$10 in certain cosmological simulations. This further indicates a global Ly$\alpha$ photon escape fraction of 7-10% at $z\sim6$, slightly lower than previous estimates through the comparison of the UV-derived star-formation rate density and Ly$\alpha$ luminosity density. Our sample recovers $66^{+128}_{-44}$% of $z=6.0-6.6$ galaxies in the survey volume with stellar masses greater than $5\times10^8$ $M_{\odot}$, suggesting the ubiquity of strong H$\alpha$ and [O III] line emitters in the Epoch of Reionization, which will be further uncovered in the era of JWST., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ on May 11, 2023

In a cold and stable space environment, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or "Webb") reaches unprecedented sensitivities at wavelengths beyond 2 microns, serving most fields of astrophysics. It also extends the parameter space of high-contrast imaging in the near and mid-infrared. Launched in late 2021, JWST underwent a six month commissioning period. In this contribution we focus on the NIRCam Coronagraphy mode which was declared "science ready" on July 10 2022, the last of the 17 JWST observing modes. Essentially, this mode will allow to detect fainter/redder/colder (less massive for a given age) self-luminous exoplanets as well as other faint astrophysical signal in the vicinity of any bright object (stars or galaxies). Here we describe some of the steps and hurdles the commissioning team went through to achieve excellent performances. Specifically, we focus on the Coronagraphic Suppression Verification activity. We were able to produce firm detections at 3.35$\mu$m of the white dwarf companion HD 114174 B which is at a separation of $\simeq$ 0.5" and a contrast of $\simeq$ 10 magnitudes ($10^{4}$ fainter than the K$\sim$5.3 mag host star). We compare these first on-sky images with our latest, most informed and realistic end-to-end simulations through the same pipeline. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will revolutionize the field of high-contrast imaging and enable both the direct detection of Saturn-mass planets and the characterization of substellar companions in the mid-infrared. While JWST will feature unprecedented sensitivity, angular resolution will be the key factor when competing with ground-based telescopes. Here, we aim to characterize the performance of several extreme angular resolution imaging techniques available with JWST in the 3-5 micron regime based on data taken during commissioning. Firstly, we introduce custom tools to simulate, reduce, and analyze NIRCam and MIRI coronagraphy data and use these tools to extract companion detection limits from on-sky NIRCam round and bar mask coronagraphy observations. Secondly, we present on-sky NIRISS aperture masking interferometry (AMI) and kernel phase imaging (KPI) observations from which we extract companion detection limits using the publicly available fouriever tool. Scaled to a total integration time of one hour and a target of the brightness of AB Dor, we find that NIRISS AMI and KPI reach contrasts of $\sim$7-8 mag at $\sim$70 mas and $\sim$9 mag at $\sim$200 mas. Beyond $\sim$250 mas, NIRCam coronagraphy reaches deeper contrasts of $\sim$13 mag at $\sim$500 mas and $\sim$15 mag at $\sim$2 arcsec. While the bar mask performs $\sim$1 mag better than the round mask at small angular separations $\lesssim$0.75 arcsec, it is the other way around at large angular separations $\gtrsim$1.5 arcsec. Moreover, the round mask gives access to the full 360 deg field-of-view which is beneficial for the search of new companions. This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. We explore how the fraction of quenched galaxies changes in groups of galaxies with respect to the distance to the center of the group, redshift, and stellar mass to determine the dominant process of environmental quenching in $0.2 < z < 0.8$ groups. We use new UV data from the UVCANDELS project in addition to existing multiband photometry to derive new galaxy physical properties of the group galaxies from the zCOSMOS 20k Group Catalog. Limiting our analysis to a complete sample of log$(M_*/M_{\odot})>10.56$ group galaxies we find that the probability of being quenched increases slowly with decreasing redshift, diverging from the stagnant field galaxy population. A corresponding analysis on how the probability of being quenched increases with time within groups suggests that the dominant environmental quenching process is characterized by slow ($\sim$Gyr) timescales. We find a quenching time of approximately $4.91^{+0.91}_{-1.47} $Gyrs, consistent with the slow processes of strangulation (Larson et al. 1980) and delayed-then-rapid quenching (Wetzel et al. 2013 arXiv:1206.3571v2 [astro-ph.CO]), although more data are needed to confirm this result.

Star-forming galaxies are the sources likely to have reionized the universe. As we cannot observe them directly due to the opacity of the intergalactic medium at $z\gtrsim5$, we study $z\sim3\text{--}5$ galaxies as proxies to place observational constraints on cosmic reionization. Using new deep \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} rest-frame UV F336W and F435W imaging (30-orbit, $\sim40$~arcmin$^2$, $\sim29\text{--}30$~mag depth at 5$\sigma$), we attempt to identify a sample of Lyman continuum galaxies (LCGs). These are individual sources that emit ionizing flux below the Lyman break ($<912~\text{\AA}$). This population would allow us to constrain cosmic reionization parameters such as the number density and escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}$) of ionizing sources. We compile a comprehensive parent sample that does not rely on the Lyman-break technique for redshifts. We present three new spectroscopic candidates at $z\sim3.7\text{--}4.4$, and 32 new photometric candidates. The high-resolution multi-band HST imaging and new Keck/Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) redshifts make these promising spectroscopic LCG candidates. Using both a traditional and probabilistic approach, we find the most likely $f_{\rm esc}$ values for the three spectroscopic LCG candidates are $>100\%$, and therefore not physical. We are unable to confirm the true nature of these sources with the best available imaging and direct blue Keck/LRIS spectroscopy. More spectra, especially from the new class of 30 m telescopes, will be required to build a statistical sample of LCGs to place firm observational constraints on cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 38 pages (28 in main body), 14 figures

We present a new measurement of the gas-phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR), and its dependence on star formation rates (SFRs) at 1.3 < z < 2.3. Our sample comprises 1056 galaxies with a mean redshift of z = 1.9, identified from the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) grism spectroscopy in the Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Survey (CANDELS) and the WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel Survey (WISP). This sample is four times larger than previous metallicity surveys at z ~ 2, and reaches an order of magnitude lower in stellar mass (10^8 M_sun). Using stacked spectra, we find that the MZR evolves by 0.3 dex relative to z ~ 0.1. Additionally, we identify a subset of 49 galaxies with high signal-to-noise (SNR) spectra and redshifts between 1.3 < z < 1.5, where H-alpha emission is observed along with [OIII] and [OII]. With accurate measurements of SFR in these objects, we confirm the existence of a mass-metallicity-SFR (M-Z-SFR) relation at high redshifts. These galaxies show systematic differences from the local M-Z-SFR relation, which vary depending on the adopted measurement of the local relation. However, it remains difficult to ascertain whether these differences could be due to redshift evolution, as the local M-Z-SFR relation is poorly constrained at the masses and SFRs of our sample. Lastly, we reproduced our sample selection in the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulation, demonstrating that our line flux limit lowers the normalization of the simulated MZR by 0.2 dex. We have undertaken an ambitious program to visually classify all galaxies in the five CANDELS fields down to H<24.5 involving the dedicated efforts of 65 individual classifiers. Once completed, we expect to have detailed morphological classifications for over 50,000 galaxies up to z<4 over all the fields. Here, we present our detailed visual classification scheme, which was designed to cover a wide range of CANDELS science goals. This scheme includes the basic Hubble sequence types, but also includes a detailed look at mergers and interactions, the clumpiness of galaxies, $k$-corrections, and a variety of other structural properties. In this paper, we focus on the first field to be completed -- GOODS-S. The wide area coverage spanning the full field includes 7634 galaxies that have been classified by at least three different people. In the deep area of the field, 2534 galaxies have been classified by at least five different people at three different depths. With this paper, we release to the public all of the visual classifications in GOODS-S along with the GUI that we developed to classify galaxies. We find that the level of agreement among classifiers is good and depends on both the galaxy magnitude and the galaxy type, with disks showing the highest level of agreement and irregulars the lowest. A comparison of our classifications with the Sersic index and rest-frame colors shows a clear separation between disk and spheroid populations. Finally, we explore morphological k-corrections between the V-band and H-band observations and find that a small fraction (84 galaxies in total) are classified as being very different between these two bands.
