4. One-dimensional nanomaterials in lithium-ion batteries

Abstract

A lot of progress has been made in rechargeable lithium-ion battery (LIB) technology research in the last decade, even so, renewed developmental efforts must be pursued to better improve energy density, capacity retention and rate capability. This review discusses the role that one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials can play towards development of next-generation LIBs. Electrode nanoengineering, interfacial kinetics and high-volume manufacturing are critical issues limiting energy density, electrochemical performance and material viability. These points are discussed, as are the advantages of deploying these nanomaterials in rechargeable LIB devices. Current data from literature is indicative of laboratory-scale success as these 1D nanomaterials display excellent capacity retention, high-rate capability and long cycle life emanating from high mechanical strength, resilience and short charge carrier diffusion distance. However, significant advances are required to translate these achievements into commercial scale deployment.

8. Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition of Ruthenium-Doped Diamond like Carbon Films

Abstract

We investigated metalorganic precursor deposition using a Microwave Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) plasma for depositing metal-doped diamondlike carbon films. Specifically, the deposition of ruthenium doped diamondlike carbon films was investigated using the decomposition of a novel ruthenium precursor, Bis(ethylcyclopentadienyl)-ruthenium (Ru(C5H4C2H5)2). The ruthenium precursor was introduced close to the substrate stage. The substrate was independently biased using an applied RF power. Films were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Four Point Probe. The conductivity of the films deposited using ruthenium precursor showed strong dependency on the deposition parameters such as pressure. Ruthenium doped sample showed the presence of diamond crystallites with an average size of approx. 3 nm while un-doped diamondlike carbon sample showed the presence of diamond crystallites with an average size of 11 nm. TEM results showed that ruthenium was atomically dispersed within the amorphous carbon network in the films.

Abstract

The Raman spectrum of gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3 nanowires with [401] growth direction is identical to that of the bulk Ga2O3 [Y. C. Choi et al. Adv. Mater. 12, 746 (200] while that of β-Ga2O3 nanowires with [401] growth direction is redshifted by 4–23 cm-1 [Y. H. Gao et al. Appl. Phys. Lett. 81, 2267 (2002)]. Here we report the Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectra of β-Ga2O3 nanowires with [110] growth direction which is blueshifted relative to the bulk spectra by ∼10–40 cm-1. Based on a first principles calculation of the strain dependence of Raman mode frequencies in bulk β-Ga2O–, we correlate the observed frequency shifts to growth-direction-induced internal strains in the nanowires. Abstract

Nanofibers are solid state linear nanomaterials characterized by flexibility and an aspect ratio greater than 1000:1. According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), nanomaterials are matters that have at least one dimension equal to or less than 100 nanometers[1]. Therefore, nanofibers are fibers that have diameter equal to or less than 100 nm. Materials in fiber form are of great practical and fundamental importance. The combination of high specific surface area, flexibility and superior directional strength makes fiber a preferred material form for many applications ranging from clothing to reinforcements for aerospace structures. Fibrous materials in nanometer scale are the fundamental building blocks of living systems. From the 1.5 nm double helix strand of DNA molecules, including cytoskeleton filaments with diameters around 30 nm, to sensory cells such as hair cells and rod cells of the eyes, nanoscale fibers form the extra-cellular matrices or the multifunctional structural backbone for tissues and organs. Specific junctions between these cells conduct electrical and chemical signals that result from various kinds of stimulation. 42. Direct synthesis of single-crystalline silicon nanowires using molten gallium and silane plasma.

Abstract

We report the first ever demonstration of using silane directly in the gas phase and molten gallium in a microwave plasma for bulk nucleation and growth of single-crystal quality silicon nanowires. Multiple nanowires nucleated and grew from micron- to millimetre-sized gallium droplets. The resulting nanowires were tens to hundreds of nanometres in diameter and were tens to hundreds of microns long. Transmission electron microscopy results confirmed the nanowires to be single crystalline, devoid of structural defects, and grown along the [inline image] direction. The as-synthesized silicon nanowires were sheathed with an ultrathin (<1 nm) non-uniform native oxide amorphous layer that could be directly used in the assembly of electronic and optoelectronic devices. Abstract

Single-crystal electron nanodiffraction patterns have been obtained from nanocrystals of various phases formed within carbonaceous balls produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). For the face-centered cubic phase, n-diamond, with cell dimension a = 0.36 nm, the relative intensities of the (200) reflection (forbidden for the diamond structure) and the (111) reflection suggest that the structure may include hydrogen atoms, and theoretical analyses support this possibility. There is evidence for a body-centered cubic phase with a = 0.31 nm, and the incorporation of hydrogen in this structure is suggested. Small amounts of hexagonal diamond, i-carbon, and other cubic phases are also present.
