Abstract While waveguide-based light concentrators offer significant advantages, their application has not been considered an interesting option for assisting multijunction or other two-terminal tandem solar cells. In this study, we present a simple yet effective approach to enhancing the output power of transfer-printed multijunction InGaP/GaAs solar cells. By utilizing a simply combinable waveguide concentrator featuring a coplanar waveguide with BaSO4 Mie scattering elements, we enable the simultaneous absorption of directly illuminated solar flux and indirectly waveguided flux. The deployment of cells is optimized for front-surface photon collection in monofacial cells. Through systematic comparisons across various waveguide parameters, supported by both experimental and theoretical quantifications, we demonstrate a remarkable improvement in the maximum output power of a 26%-efficient cell, achieving an enhancement of ~93% with the integration of the optimal scattering waveguide. Additionally, a series of supplementary tests are conducted to explore the effective waveguide size, validate enhancements in arrayed cell module performance, and assess the drawbacks associated with rear illumination. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of our proposed approach towards advancing multi-junction photovoltaics.

Flexible bioelectronic devices have attracted immense interest in the biomedical field because of their wearability, biocompatibility, diverse functionalities, and ease of personalization. Recently, flexible energy harvesters have been developed, and attempts have been made to integrate them with such devices, enabling them to operate without external batteries or power supply. In this review, the latest advances in flexible energy harvesters and their use in wearable devices are discussed. Energy harvesters for versatile biomedical applications are summarized. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of self‐powered biomedical systems that enable wearable healthcare monitoring and management are outlined.

ABSTRACTA new technique using impedance spectroscopy was developed to estimate the oxidation kinetics of the pyrolytic carbon interphase layer in SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites. The AC impedance Nyquist plot showed two semicircles that were curve-fitted using an equivalent circuit with two constant-phase element components. The analysis results revealed that the capacitance in the low-frequency region decreased with increasing oxidation time, whereas that in the high-frequency region remained relatively constant. This change in the capacitance in the low-frequency region was associated with the thickness of the oxidized SiO2 layer. This study might make a significant contribution to the literature, which has mostly focused on the characterization of ceramic matrix composites through measurements of mechanical properties. The limitations and potential applications of the developed method were also elucidated.

Abstract Background Computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology was developed to improve surgical accuracy and minimize errors in surgical planning and orthognathic surgery. However, its accurate implementation during surgery remains a challenge. Hence, we compared the accuracy and stability of conventional orthognathic surgery and the novel modalities, such as virtual simulation and three-dimensional (3D) titanium-printed customized surgical osteotomy guides and plates. Methods This prospective study included 12 patients who were willing to undergo orthognathic surgery. The study group consisted of patients who underwent orthognathic two-jaw surgery using 3D-printed patient-specific plates processed by selective laser melting and an osteotomy guide; orthognathic surgery was also performed by the surgeon directly bending the ready-made plate in the control group. Based on the preoperative computed tomography images and intraoral 3D scan data, a 3D virtual surgery plan was implemented in the virtual simulation module, and the surgical guide and bone fixation plate were fabricated. The accuracy and stability were evaluated by comparing the results of the preoperative virtual simulation (T0) to those at 7 days (T1) and 6 months (T2) post-surgery. Result The accuracy (ΔT1‒T0) and stability (ΔT2‒T1) measurements, using 11 anatomical references, both demonstrated more accurate results in the study group. Increasing evidence reinforces the essential function of RNA modifications in development and diseases, especially in the nervous system. RNA modifications impact various processes in the brain, including neurodevelopment, neurogenesis, neuroplasticity, learning and memory, neural regeneration, neurodegeneration, and brain tumorigenesis, leading to the emergence of a new field termed neuroepitranscriptomics. Deficiency in machineries modulating RNA modifications has been implicated in a range of brain disorders from microcephaly, intellectual disability, seizures, and psychiatric disorders to brain cancers such as glioblastoma. The inaugural NSAS Challenge Workshop on Brain Epitranscriptomics hosted in Crans-Montana, Switzerland in 2023 assembled a group of experts from the field, to discuss the current state of the field and provide novel translational perspectives. A summary of the discussions at the workshop is presented here to simulate broader engagement from the general neuroscience field.

Abstract Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) fibers with favorable electroluminescence properties and interconnectable pixel configurations have represented the potential for wearable electronic textile displays. Nevertheless, the current technology of OLED fiber-based textile displays still leaves to be desired due to several challenges, including limited emission area and lack of encapsulation systems. Here we present a fibrous OLED textile display that can attain a large emission area and long-term stability by implementing addressable networks comprised of integrated phosphorescence OLED fibers and by designing multilayer encapsulations. The integrated fiber configuration offers decoupled functional fiber surfaces for an interconnectable 1-dimensional OLED pixel array and a data-addressing conductor. Tailored triadic metal/ultrathin oxide/polymer multilayer enables not only the oxygen/water permeation inhibition but also the controllable conductive channels of dielectric antifuses. Together with reliable bending stability, the long-term operation of OLED textiles in water manifests the feasibility of the present device concept toward water-resistant full-emitting-area fibrous textile displays.

Summary: Background: The long-term effects of radical resection on quality of life may influence the treatment selection. The objective of this study was to determine whether abdominoperineal resection has a better effect on the quality of life than sphincter preservation surgery at 3 years after surgery Methods: This prospective, cohort study included patients who underwent radical resection for low rectal cancer. The primary outcomes were European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 and CR38 quality of life scores 3 years after surgery, which were compared with linear generalised estimating equations, after adjustment for baseline values, a time effect, and an interaction effect between time and treatment. The secondary outcomes included sexual-urinary functions and oncological outcomes. The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01461525). Findings: Between December 2011 and August 2016, 342 patients were enrolled: 268 (78•4%) underwent sphincter preservation surgery and 74 (21•6%) underwent abdominoperineal resection. The global quality of life scores did not differ between sphincter preservation surgery and abdominoperineal resection groups (adjusted mean difference, 4•2 points on a 100-point scale; 95% confidence interval [CI], −1•3 to 9•7, p = 0•1316). Natural products and medicinal herbs have been used to treat various human diseases by regulating cellular functions and metabolic pathways. Angelica gigas NAKAI (AG) helps regulate pathological processes in some medical fields, including gastroenterology, gynecology, and neuropsychiatry. Although some papers have reported its diverse indications, the effects of AG against arachidonic acid (AA)+ iron and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) have not been reported. In HepG2 cells, AA+ iron induced cellular apoptosis and mitochondrial damage, as assessed by mitochondrial membrane permeability (MMP) and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins. On the other hand, AG markedly inhibited these detrimental phenomena and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by AA+ iron. AG activated the liver kinase B1 (LKB1)-dependent AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which affected oxidative stress in the cells. Moreover, AG also regulated the expression of yes-associated protein (YAP) signaling as mediated by the AMPK pathways. In mice, an oral treatment of AG protected against liver toxicity induced by CCl4, as indicated by the plasma and histochemical parameters. Among the compounds in AG, decursin had antioxidant activity and affected the AMPK pathway. In conclusion, AG has antioxidant effects in vivo and in vitro, indicating that natural products such as AG could be potential candidate for the nutraceuticals to treat various disorders by regulating mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular metabolic pathways.

Introduction of metallic nanoparticles that can generate the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been considered as a prominent option for enhancing the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs), as the radiative scattering and field confinement by the SPR can extend the effective photon traveling length and manipulate the spatial absorption profile. Despite many successful efforts to favorably exploit metallic nanoparticles, further studies of their effects on the PSC performance have been demanded to achieve the full benefit from them. Here, we systematically investigate the optical and photovoltaic performances of PSCs with disorderly distributed silver nanoprisms embedded in the photoactive material. Due to the superior properties of the plasmonic scattering of this class of nanoparticles, a significant improvement of photon absorption is gained from the devices with silver nanoprisms, particularly in the wavelength range of substandard absorption property including the band-edge wavelengths. While such absorption improvement can be obviously reinforced as an increase in the particle density, its level becomes saturated and decayed eventually because of the concurrently promoted photon loss by plasmonic absorption. At the optimal configurations of silver nanoprisms for the productive light trapping effect, the incorporated PSC devices present a photocurrent of ∼17.76 mA/cm2 and a power conversion efficiency of ∼9.68%, where their net increase ratios are ∼10% and ∼13% compared to the reference PSC devices, respectively. Details of numerical modeling and experiments for both metal nanoprisms and PSC devices offer an optimum route to tailoring metallic nanoparticles for high-performance PSC systems.

We investigate models for the IRAS LRS)Low Resolution Spectra) of OH/IR stars. OH/IR stars often show the silicate features at 9.7 and in the spectra obtained by the IRAS LRS as well as remarkably red values in the IRAS photometric colors such as [60]-[25] and [25]-[12]. We compare the radiative transfer model results with observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the stars including IRAS PSC(Point Source Catalog), IRAS LRS and ground based observational data.

Background This study aimed to present our 5-year experience of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) performed by emergency physicians. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 58 patients who underwent ECPR between January 2010 and December 2014. The primary parameter analyzed was survival to hospital discharge. The secondary parameters analyzed were neurologic outcome at hospital discharge, cannulation time, and ECPR-related complications. Results Thirty-one patients (53.4%) were successfully weaned from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and 18 (31.0%) survived to hospital discharge. Twelve patients (20.7%) were discharged with good neurologic outcomes. The median cannulation time was 25.0 min (interquartile range 20.0-31.0 min). Nineteen patients (32.8%) had ECPR-related complications, the most frequent being distal limb ischemia. Regarding the initial presentation, 52 patients (83.9%) collapsed due to a cardiac etiology, and acute myocardial infarction (33/62, 53.2%) was the most common cause of cardiac arrest. Conclusions The survival to hospital discharge rate for cardiac arrest patients who underwent ECPR conducted by an emergency physician was within the acceptable limits. The cannulation time and complications following ECPR were comparable to those found in previous studies.
