In this paper, a Dual Winding Flux Modulation Machine (DWFMM) is proposed for variable speed application. The DWFMM is configured by adding windings to the Single Winding Flux Modulation Machine (SWFMM), consisting of a master winding that drives the motor and a slave winding that enables pole changing and performance enhancement. Through pole changing, the DWFMM can operate as two different machines: a Vernier Machine (VM) for varying speeds and torque operations and a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM). In the VM mode, flux enhancement is applied to improve torque, and in the PMSM mode, Flux Weakening is applied to increase speed. The characteristics of the two different operating modes were analyzed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) to validate the machine’s performance. Finally, the DWFMM and SWFMM were designed and compared as variable speed application machines to confirm their suitability and superiority.

This paper proposes a dual-mode brushless wound rotor synchronous machine (DBL-WRSM) for high starting torque. The proposed DBL-WRSM consists of two modes: induction and brushless (BL)-synchronous modes. First, the induction mode operates as a wound rotor induction machine (WRIM) to achieve a high starting torque. Second, the BL-synchronous mode operates as a brushless wound rotor synchronous machine (BL-WRSM) using the subharmonic of the stator magnetomotive force (MMF) in the steady state. To realize the dual-mode topology of the proposed machine, the stator is composed of two divided armature windings and two inverters that can produce subharmonics. The rotor has five switches that convert the rotor winding configuration between the two modes. To verify the proposed topology of DBL-WRSM, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed. Through the FEA results of the transient electromagnetic torque for the voltage source, it was confirmed that the proposed DBL-WRSM not only operates as a BL-WRSM in a steady state but also has a sufficiently high starting torque even under a full-load condition.

This paper presents the efficiency improvement of a pole-changing vernier machine (PCVM) by considering the residual magnetic flux density (Br) of low coercivity force (LCF) permanent magnets (PMs). The PCVM operates in two modes: vernier machine (VM) mode and permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) mode, achieved through pole-changing. Pole-changing involves reversing the magnetic flux direction of LCF PM to alter the number of rotor pole pairs. By changing the number of rotor pole pairs, the PCVM operates as a VM mode at low speeds, providing high torque, and as a PMSM mode at high speeds, offering high efficiency. To achieve this, a combination of high coercivity force (HCF) PM and LCF PM is utilized in a single structure. The magnetic flux direction in the LCF PM is determined by Br, and the highest efficiency is achieved when Br reaches its maximum value |Brm|. This paper focuses on improving efficiency by obtaining Brm in VM mode and −Brm in PMSM mode through the design process. Additionally, finite element analysis (FEA) is employed to compare the performance of the improved model, which considers Br, with that of the conventional model, designed without considering Br. The improved model achieves higher Br values in each mode compared to the conventional model, resulting in increased torque density. Consequently, this leads to improved efficiency.

Severe cerebral edema associated with exertional heat stroke is a major cause of death or disability. However, few studies on severe cerebral edema resulting from heat stroke have reported neuroradiological findings. Moreover, all the patients in these previous reports either died or remained severely disabled. Here, we report a case of exertional heat stroke with severe cerebral edema that probably developed or worsened due to delayed body temperature normalization. In contrast to previous reports, the patient showed complete clinical and neuroradiological recovery. This rare case suggests that severe cerebral edema could be reversed through meticulous supportive management. Moreover, it confirms the importance of rapid and effective cooling in heat stroke treatment.

In this study, high-purity single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are synthesized with additional carrier gas through floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition. The presence of Ar during the SWCNT aerogel formation affects to the precursor decomposition and to the formation of different reactive hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the concentration of produced various carbon species is sensitive to the carrier gas compositions. The in-situ sampling methods prove the thermodynamic pathway for the hydrocarbon cracking during carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogel formation process. The addition of Ar promoted the formation of reactive hydrocarbon species, such as CH3, CH4, and C2H4/CO, to improve CNT morphology and graphitization. Ar has improved purity of CNTs compared to when only H2 is used. The synthesized CNTs were narrow in size, and the diameter decreased from 1.8 to 1.2 nm with the carrier gas composition (Rx) according to Ar addition. The IG/ID ratio of the CNTs changed from 78 to 3 at R0.1 and R0.57, respectively. Furthermore, the purity also increased to approximately 10% from 78% to 91% depending on Rx.

Studies in rats, monkeys, and humans have found action-value signals in multiple regions of the brain. These findings suggest that action-value signals encoded in these brain structures bias choices toward higher expected rewards. However, previous estimates of action-value signals might have been inflated by serial correlations in neural activity and also by activity related to other decision variables. Here, we applied several statistical tests based on permutation and surrogate data to analyze neural activity recorded from the striatum, frontal cortex, and hippocampus. The results show that previously identified action-value signals in these brain areas cannot be entirely accounted for by concurrent serial correlations in neural activity and action value. We also found that neural activity related to action value is intermixed with signals related to other decision variables. Our findings provide strong evidence for broadly distributed neural signals related to action value throughout the brain.

Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized using oxygen-containing ferrocene derived catalysts. The mechanism of synthesizing carbon nanotubes was clarified by the catalyst’s exothermic or endothermic decomposition processes. By monitoring the decomposition process of ferrocene-derived catalyst precursors with and without sulfur, we found that the types of oxygen function groups closely influence catalyst formation and nanotube growth. The ferrocene-derived catalyst precursors have a different oxygen containing groups, which are hydroxyl (–OH, ferrocenenemethanol) and carbonyl (C=O, acetylferrocene, and 1,1′-diacetylferrocene). The sulfur chemical state (S 2p) on synthesized catalyst particles using acetylferrocene and 1,1′-diacetylferrocene has more sulfate (SO42−) than others, and there also is a carbon state (C-S-C). The catalyst particle using ferrocenemethanol predominant formed metal–sulfur bonds (such as S2− and Sn2−). The hydroxyl group (–OH) of ferrocenemethanol enhanced the etching effect to remove amorphous carbon and prevented oxidation on the catalyst particle surfaces; however, the carbonyl group (C=O) of acetylferrocene reacted with the catalyst particles to cause partial oxidation and carbon dissociation on the surface of the catalyst particles. The partial oxidation and carbon contamination on catalyst particles controlled the activity of the catalyst. The DFT study revealed that the ferrocene-derived catalyst precursor was dissociated according to following process: the functional groups (such as CH3CO and COH) => first Cp ligands => second Cp ligands. The pyrolysis and release of Fe ions were delayed by the functional groups of ferrocene-derived precursors compared to ferrocene. The thermal-decomposition temperature of the catalyst precursor was high, the decomposition time was be delayed, affecting the formation of catalyst particles and thus making smaller catalyst particles. The size and composition of catalyst particles not only affect the nucleation of CNTs, but also affect physical properties. Therefore, the IG/ID ratio of the CNTs changed from 74 to 18 for acetylferrocene and ferrocene, respectively. The purity also increased from 79 to 90% using ferrocene-derived precursors.

Abstract Background We report the successful use of allograft–prosthesis composite (APC) and structural femoral head allografting in the bilateral reconstruction of large femoral and tibial uncontained defects during revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA). Case presentation A 67-year-old female with degenerative arthritis underwent bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using the Press Fit Condylar (PFC) modular knee system at our clinic in March, 1996. At 8 years postoperatively, the patient presented with painful, bilateral varus knees, with swelling, limited passive range of motion (ROM), and severe instability. We treated to reconstruct both knee using a femoral head allograft at the tibial site, a structural distal femoral allograft at the femoral site, and a varus-valgus constrained (VVC) prosthesis with cement. At the 10-year follow up, we found no infection, graft failure, loosening of implants, in spite of using massive bilateral structural femoral head allografts in RTKA. Conclusion The use of APC enabled a stable and durable reconstruction in this uncommon presentation with large femoral bone deficiencies encountered during a RTKA.

Astragalus extract mixture HT042 is a standardized functional food granted by the Korean FDA for promoting “Children’s Height Growth”. In this study, we determined whether HT042 affects circulatory Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) after administration and investigated whether Growth hormone (GH), Growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R), and Growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) mRNAs are expressed in the pituitary, and whether Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and Somatostatin (SST) are expressed in the hypothalamus. We also evaluated the growth effect of HT042 on endochondral bone formation. Male Sprague-Dawley rats in the control and HT042 groups were orally administered a single dose of the control and HT042, respectively, and those in the recombinant human GH (rhGH) group were subcutaneously injected with rhGH. Tetracycline was injected intraperitoneally 72 h prior to sacrifice to decide endochondral bone formation. To determine the endocrine or paracrine/autocrine mechanism, we evaluated the expression of local BMP-2 and IGF-1, an immunohistochemical study after HT042 administration. It was confirmed that the growth-promoting effect of HT042 can be contributed to the increase in serum IGF-1, which can be stimulated by GH secretion. Administration of HT042 modulated the activity of GHRH-R and GHR-S in the pituitary gland and promoted GH secretion, thereby changing longitudinal growth through GH/IGF-1 mediation. Results for GHRH and SST expression demonstrated that the hypothalamus can be influenced and mediated by HT042 through a complex neuroendocrine regulatory system. In addition, it was confirmed by oral administration for 10 days that HT042 increased bone formation in cartilage, which is important for height growth. The effect of HT042 could be owing to upregulation of local Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and IGF-1 expression in the growth plate, which could be regarded as a GH-dependent autocrine/paracrine pathway, as well as circulatory IGF-1.

This study aimed to establish and reproduce transgenic pigs expressing human growth hormone (hGH) in their milk. We also aimed to purify hGH from the milk, to characterize the purified protein, and to assess the potential of our model for mass production of therapeutic proteins using transgenic techniques. Using ~15.5 L transgenic pig milk, we obtained proteins with ≥ 99% purity after three pre-treatments and five column chromatography steps. To confirm the biosimilarity of our milk-derived purified recombinant hGH (CGH942) with commercially available somatropin (Genotropin), we performed spectroscopy, structural, and biological analyses. We observed no difference between the purified protein and Genotropin samples. Furthermore, rat models were used to assess growth promotion potential. Our results indicate that CGH942 promotes growth, by increasing bone development and body weight. Toxicity assessments revealed no abnormal findings after 4 weeks of continuous administration and 2 weeks of recovery. The no-observed-adverse-effect level for both males and females was determined to be 0.6 mg/kg/day. Thus, no toxicological differences were observed between commercially available somatropin and CGH942 obtained from transgenic pig milk. In conclusion, we describe a transgenic technique using pigs, providing a new platform to produce human therapeutic proteins.

Rarely, it was reported the large aneurysm could be revealed a hemiparkinsonism in some case reports. We report the case of a patient who developed predominantly right-sided parkinsonism with giant aneurysm on posterior cerebral artery (PCA). The hemiparkinsonism by PCA aneurysm was not reported, from what we know. And, this is the first case that performing FP-CIT PET on hemiparkinsonism with giant aneurysm. Initially, we probably thought the parkinsonism was a result of giant aneurysm of the PCA, secondary to midbrain compression by aneurysm. However, it could not be excluded the idiopathic parkinsonian disease (IPD) by the result of FP-CIT PET. The levodopa was administrated and her gait disturbance and bradykinesia was improved. Previous efforts to discover new surrogate markers for the central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory demyelinating disorders have shown inconsistent results; moreover, supporting evidence is scarce. The present study investigated the IgG autoantibody responses to various viral and autoantibodies-related peptides proposed to be related to CNS inflammatory demyelinating disorders using the peptide microarray method. We customized a peptide microarray containing more than 2440 immobilized peptides representing human and viral autoantigens. Using this, we tested the sera of patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD seropositive, n = 6; NMOSD seronegative, n = 5), multiple sclerosis (MS, n = 5), and myelin-oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD, n = 6), as well as healthy controls (HC, n = 5) and compared various peptide immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses between the groups. Among the statistically significant peptides based on the pairwise comparisons of IgG responses in each disease group to HC, cytomegalovirus (CMV)-related peptides were most clearly distinguishable among the study groups. In particular, the most significant differences in IgG response were observed for HC vs. MS and HC vs. seronegative NMOSD (p = 0.064). Relatively higher IgG responses to CMV-related peptides were observed in patients with MS and NMOSD based on analysis of the customized peptide microarray.

We have shown previously that CA1 conveys significant neural signals necessary to update value of the chosen target, namely chosen value and reward signals. To better understand hippocampal neural processes related to valuation, we compared chosen value- and reward-related neural activity between the CA3 and CA1 regions. Single units were recorded with tetrodes from the dorsal CA3 and CA1 regions of rats performing a dynamic foraging task, and chosen value- and reward-related neural activity was estimated using a reinforcement learning model and multiple regression analyses. Neural signals for chosen value and reward converged in both CA3 and CA1 when a trial outcome was revealed. However, these neural signals were stronger in CA1 than CA3. Consequently, neural signals for reward prediction error and updated chosen value were stronger in CA1 than CA3. Together with our previous finding that CA1 conveys stronger value signals than the subiculum, our results raise the possibility that CA1 might play a particularly important role among hippocampal subregions in evaluating experienced events.

Time-of-flight (ToF) measurement technology based on the amplitude-modulated continuous-wave (AMCW) model has emerged as a state-of-the-art distance-measurement method for various engineering applications. However, many of the ToF cameras employing the AMCW process phase demodulation sequentially, which requires time latency for a single distance measurement. This can result in significant distance errors, especially in non-static environments (e.g., robots and vehicles) such as those containing objects moving relatively to the sensors. To reduce the measurement time required for a distance measurement, this paper proposes a novel, parallel-phase demodulation method. The proposed method processes phase demodulation of signal in parallel rather than sequentially. Based on the parallel phase demodulation, 2π ambiguity problem is also solved in this work by adopting dual frequency modulation to increase the maximum range while maintaining the accuracy. The performance of proposed method was verified through distance measurements under various conditions. The improved distance measurement accuracy was demonstrated throughout an extended measurement range (1−10 m).

Pigs are anatomically and physiologically closer to humans than other laboratory animals. Transgenic (TG) pigs are widely used as models of human diseases. The aim of this study was to produce pigs expressing a tetracycline (Tet)-inducible transgene. The Tet-on system was first tested in infected donor cells. Porcine fetal fibroblasts were infected with a universal doxycycline-inducible vector containing the target gene enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP). At 1 day after treatment with 1 µg/ml doxycycline, the fluorescence intensity of these cells was increased. Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) was then performed using these donor cells. The Tet-on system was then tested in the generated porcine SCNT-TG embryos. Of 4,951 porcine SCNT-TG embryos generated, 850 were cultured in the presence of 1 µg/ml doxycycline in vitro. All of these embryos expressed eGFP and 15 embryos developed to blastocyst stage. The remaining 4,101 embryos were transferred to thirty three surrogate pigs from which thirty eight cloned TG piglets were obtained. PCR analysis showed that the transgene was inserted into the genome of each of these piglets. Two TG fibroblast cell lines were established from these TG piglets, and these cells were used as donor cells for re-cloning. The re-cloned SCNT embryos expressed the eGFP transgene under the control of doxycycline. These data show that the expression of transgenes in cloned TG pigs can be regulated by the Tet-on/off systems.

Background/Aim: This study aimed to compare the use of a rotating gantry in liver tumor carbon-ion radiotherapy using of a fixed-port for treatment planning. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with liver tumors were analyzed. Three treatment plans were developed for each case: one with a rotating gantry with a 360° angle, one with fixed ports of 0° and 90° with a ±20° couch rolling setting, and one with fixed ports of 45° and 90° with a ±20° couch rolling setting. The dose--volume histogram parameters of the clinical target volume (CTV) and organs at risk (OARs) for each treatment plan were compared. Results: Significant differences in the volume of the liver-gross tumor volume (GTV) of normal liver irradiated with 5 Gy to 15 Gy were found between the gantry treatment plans and fixed-port treatment plans. There were no significant differences in the OARs, except for the CTV and liver GTV, between the gantry and fixed-port treatment plans. Conclusion: The study results support the potential of using a rotating gantry to reduce liver doses, especially in the low-to-medium dose range, while maintaining target and OAR doses except for the liver. A rotating gantry could be especially useful in cases in which the relationship between the tumor and OAR is complicated by location. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
