2. Flexibility of reinforcement biases and reaction times in competitive zero-sum games

Abstract

In competitive zero-sum games with mixed equilibria, two rational players should make each of their game choices randomly, with no contingencies between their choices. However, people often deviate from this equilibrium by following a reinforcement heuristic of repeating moves that won on the previous round (win-stay) and avoiding the repetition of moves that did not win (lose-shift). In this thesis, I examine the flexibility of these reinforcement biases, and the speed of decision-making: under what circumstances do people make biased choices, and under what circumstances do people choose quickly or stop to deliberate? In Chapter 1, I review the current state of knowledge on how well people can produce or detect randomness, how reinforcement biases influence decision-making, and how processing speeds might differ between different game situations. In Chapters 2 and 3 I present four experiments where I examined performance in the games Rock, Paper & Scissors (RPS; Chapter 2, Experiments 1 and 2) and Matching Pennies (MP; Chapter 3, Experiments 3 and 4). Surprisingly, I found no reinforcement biases in RPS, but consistent reinforcement biases in MP. Additionally, participants made slower decisions after losses when they succeeded in the game due to finding an appropriate strategy to exploit an opponent's pattern (Chapter 2), but not when they succeeded no matter what they did (Chapter 3). In Chapter 4, I present two experiments (Experiments 5 and 6) directly comparing performance in RPS and MP, designed to replicate the findings from Chapters 2 and 3, and examine why the previous studies only found reinforcement biases in MP. The results of these two last experiments suggest that reinforcement biases differ between RPS and MP due to different cognitive demands, and that there is considerable variability in reinforcement biases both between individuals and between the two types of bias. In Chapter 5, I discuss the contributions of the findings on the wider literature on bias and randomness detection, the generality of the reinforcement biases, and present some suggestions for future studies.

Abstract

Governments across the globe imposed behavioral restrictions to halt the spread of the COVID-19. These preventive behaviors became a moralized issue and engagement in those behaviors varied. In moral psychology, there are various theoretical frameworks with measures of individual differences that concern the way we form moral judgments. In a pre-registered longitudinal three-wave project started before the pandemic, we examined the predictive power of several moral measures on compliance with behavioral guidelines, moralization toward noncompliance, and intention to vaccinate and actual vaccine uptake. Mature integrative and deliberative moral thinking predicted moralization and compliance better than several measures of utilitarianism. These results hold when controlling for Fear of Covid-19 and sociodemographic factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a pilot survey on attitudes towards profiling in general and different uses of profiling, with a special focus on potential uses of profiling for crime prevention. The primary aim of the survey is to inform a future experimental social psychology survey concerning a fictional crime prevention scenario. Specifically, we wish to examine whether there are ceiling or floor effects in people's views on the moral acceptability of profiling when used to prevent specific types of crimes. If such effects occur, we may wish to avoid describing crime types with ceiling or floor effects in the experimental study. The secondary aim of the survey is to provide general information about people's views on profiling for various purposes in terms of the ethicality of profiling and whether people view profiling as a violation privacy.

Abstract

This is a revised version of a previously run survey experiment. The survey concerns attitudes towards cognitive enhancement - specifically, memory-enhancing neural implants. The study used the contrastive vignettes method, with each vignette describing a person being offered an implant that would either 1) cure their early-stage dementia 2) provide them with youth-level memory and prevent any memory loss in the future or 3) provide them with the ability to perfectly recollect anything they've ever experienced. We refer to these three levels of enhancement as "alleviation", "optimization" and "superhuman", respectively. In each vignette, the person offered the vignette is described as discussing the potential risks of the operation with a doctor, and then either accepting or refusing the offer of the implant. The dependent variables concern evaluations of the decision, the microchip technology described, and the character of the person in the story. Specifically, we ask participants 1) how ethical, right or wrong they find the decision to either accept or refuse the microchip (moral acceptability); 2) how fair or unfair they view the microchip technology described (fairness); and 3) how human-like they view the person in the story (dehumanization). This study is based on a previous experiment that was not pre-registered. The main difference between this study and the earlier experiment is the inclusion of the conditions where the main character of the story refuses the implant; the previous study only concerned situations where the main character decides to accept the offered implant operation. In addition to replicating earlier findings concerning the conditions where the implant operation is not refused, the main purpose of this study is to examine individual differences measures that predict approval or disapproval of certain forms of enhancement. Most importantly, we wish to examine whether the so-called binding foundations of the Moral Foundations Questionnaire negatively predict moral approval of engaging in cognitive enhancement specifically, or simply moral approval of any decision a character makes (a "general negativity factor").

This is a follow-up study on the previous moral psychology study registered under this project (https://osf.io/5bpxq). The DVs are identical to that study, and the study design is largely similar. The only difference in the 2x2 (between) x2 (within) design is the guilt condition. In the previous study, there were two versions of a vignette describing a boat with one person on board colliding with a boat with two people on board: in one version the party of one had acted irresponsibly and caused the accident, in the other version the party of two had done so. In this study, the two guilt conditions are a "both guilty" condition, where both parties act irresponsibly, and a "both innocent" condition, where both parties act responsibly but end up colliding due to circumstances out of their control.

Abstract

In this experimental (2 x 2 between-subjects x 2 within-subjects) study we examine how decisions made by either human or robot lifeguards in a moral dilemma situation are evaluated. Participants read a short story describing a situation where a coastal lifeguard (either human or robot) has to decide which of two drowning parties to save: a lone fisherman or two motorboaters. One of the parties (varied between conditions) is guilty for the accident that has led to them being thrown to icy waters and in risk of death. The study attempts to disentangle potential effects of utilitarian (the effect of number of people saved) and justice-related (the effect of saving the innocent vs the guilty) factors on appraisals on which decision is considered more moral. NOTE: This registration is an update to a preregistration of this project that we withdrew prior to data collection. The reason for the withdrawal were two errors in the preregistration. First, in the sampling plan section, the preregistration stated that we would collect one initial sample of 50 participants to verify the study length and proportion of excluded participants: we intend to collect two such 50 participant samples before collecting the rest. Second, the file that listed each of the DVs and attention checks was missing from the preregistration. We have also added "Social Psychology" as a subject, which we did not in the withdrawn preregistration.

Abstract

The study will investigate predictors of compliance with pandemic guidelines and the stability of relevant measures across multiple timepoints during the pandemic. The study has a longitudinal design, with the first time-point of data having already been collected and analyzed for other purposes. This preregistration applies from the second time-point onwards. We plan to collect wave 2 in December 2020. The timing of wave 3 has not been yet decided, but we aim to collect it some time after the mass-vaccinations have been started (at least 3 months from wave 2) The starting point (time-point/wave 1) of the project is a sample collected for an unrelated experiment in late September 2019, prior to the coronavirus pandemic. Several moral psychological and other trait measures as well as demographic data were collected for this sample. Thus, the first sample provides a point of comparison point to the current pandemic situation, and allows for both examining potential changes in traits across two very different situations in the world and lagged analyses of traits measured prior to the pandemic and reported behaviours measured during the pandemic.

Abstract

Artificial intelligences (AIs) are widely used in tasks ranging from transportation to healthcare and military, but it is not yet known how people prefer them to act in ethically difficult situations. In five studies (an anthropological field study, n = 30, and four experiments, total n = 2150), we presented people with vignettes where a human or an advanced robot nurse is ordered by a doctor to forcefully medicate an unwilling patient. Participants were more accepting of a human nurse's than a robot nurse's forceful medication of the patient, and more accepting of (human or robot) nurses who respected patient autonomy rather than those that followed the orders to forcefully medicate (Study 2). The findings were robust against the perceived competence of the robot (Study 3), moral luck (whether the patient lived or died afterwards; Study 4), and command chain effects (Study 5; fully automated supervision or not). Thus, people prefer robots capable of disobeying orders in favour of abstract moral principles like valuing personal autonomy. Our studies fit in a new era in research, where moral psychological phenomena no longer reflect only interactions between people, but between people and autonomous AIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.
