Abstract

The efficient use of fibers derived from natural sources is the main goal of this research project. However, the priority on natural fibers falls short of meeting the necessary strength requirements. The goal of this work is to empirically analyze composite materials made with sugarcane bagasse and jute natural fibers as reinforcement, and PVA as the matrix. The goal is to examine the various mechanical and thermal insulating properties of Bagasse fiber/jute fiber composites to determine their application in technical domains. To carry out this investigation, a series of five hybrid composites were developed, each containing 65% polyvinyl acetate and varying the blend proportion of bagasse fiber and jute fiber: 100% /0%, 70%/30%, 50%/50%, 30%/70%, and 0%/100%. Compression molding was used as the fabrication technique. These composites’ resulting mechanical characteristics followed a critical analysis by ASTM standards. Through SEM analysis, the fiber shape, internal fracture forms, and binding properties were investigated. The results of the study showed that the tensile strength of composites made of bagasse and jute fibers is 265.80 MPa, which is close to the strength (270.10 MPa) displayed by composites made of synthetic fibers. Significantly, compared to the other configurations, the composites made up of 70% jute and 30% bagasse fibers exhibit a higher thermal insulation coefficient. Furthermore, compared to the other samples, these 70/30 composites had better impact resistance and flexural strength.

Abstract

Contact charging between insulators is one of the most basic, yet least well understood, of physical processes. For example we have no clear theory for how insulators recruit enough charge carriers to deposit charge but not enough to discharge. In this letter we note that charging and discharging kinetics may be distinct, and from this observation we develop a mathematical model. The model surprisingly predicts that charging can decrease as contact frequency increases: we confirm this prediction experimentally and propose future steps.

37. A Study on Institutional Perception of Student Teachers on the Principles of Total Quality Management

Abstract

Education shapes the destiny of a nation, and is the principal instrument for developing human capabilities. Educational quality is highly influenced by the learning experiences gained during the teaching-learning process. The concern for improving quality of teaching-learning process is significant, since this is a mechanism through which the content and intent of curriculum is transacted at elementary, secondary as well as higher education level. In order to impart quality education, our education system has to acquire the following qualities such as quality syllabus, quality faculty, quality teaching and evaluation, quality research and quality character. As quality education is need of hour, all the quality issues should be given top most priority with equal attention. Hence the present study was focused in such a way to study the perception of students of teacher education institution towards different quality parameters. A survey was made with the help of the Student's Institutional Perception Scale (SIPS) constructed by Subramonian and Muthaiah (2006). This survey was conducted among 150 student teachers and the results revealed that, in studying the quality management of the institution, the perception of students towards their institution varied with regard to their gender and there was no variation with regard to their educational qualification with their locality.

Abstract

We use an "equation-free", coarse-grained computational approach to accelerate molecular dynamics-based computations of demixing (segregation) of dissimilar particles subject to an upward gas flow (gas-fluidized beds). We explore the coarse-grained dynamics of these phenomena in gently fluidized beds of solid mixtures of different densities, typically a slow process for which reasonable continuum models are currently unavailable.

Abstract

A particle dynamics-based hybrid model, consisting of monodisperse spherical solid particles and volume-averaged gas hydrodynamics, is used to study traveling planar waves (one-dimensional traveling waves) of voids formed in gas-fluidized beds of narrow cross sectional areas. Through ensemble-averaging in a co-traveling frame, we compute solid phase continuum variables (local volume fraction, average velocity, stress tensor, and granular temperature) across the waves, and examine the relations among them. We probe the consistency between such computationally obtained relations and constitutive models in the kinetic theory for granular materials which are widely used in the two-fluid modeling approach to fluidized beds. We demonstrate that solid phase continuum variables exhibit appreciable ``path dependence'', which is not captured by the commonly used kinetic theory-based models. We show that this path dependence is associated with the large rates of dilation and compaction that occur in the wave. We also examine the relations among solid phase continuum variables in beds of cohesive particles, which yield the same path dependence. Our results both for beds of cohesive and non-cohesive particles suggest that path-dependent constitutive models need to be developed., Comment: accepted for publication in Physics of Fluids (Burnett-order effect analysis added)
