Abstract

DC ionization conductivity measurements were used to characterize the electrical response of amorphous semiconductors to ionizing radiation. Two different glass systems were examined: a chalcopyrite glass (Cd[Ge.sub.x][As.sub.2]; for x = 0.45 - 1.0) with a tetrahedrally coordinated structure and a chalcogenide glass ([As.sub.40][Se.sub.(60-x)][Te.sub.x]; where x = 0-12), with a layered or three dimensionally networked structure, depending on Te content. Changes in DC ionization current were measured as a function of the type of radiation ([alpha] or [gamma]), dose rate, applied field, specimen thickness and temperature. The greatest DC ionization response was measured with Cd[Ge.sub.0.85][As.sub.2] at -40[degrees]C from an alpha source (which is the first reported result for radiation response from an amorphous chalcopyrite semiconductor). Avalanche gain was observed in [As.sub.40][Se.sub.60] with exposure to alpha radiation at fields [greater than or equal to] 7 x [10.sup.3] V/cm. These results demonstrate the potential of these materials for radiation detection applications. Abstract

Femtosecond pulse laser radiation (250 fs, 1030 nm) of alkali and alkaline earth modified soda‐lime silicate (SLS) glasses resulted in densification. The degree of density changes depends on pulse energy and glass‐network connectivity. Raman spectroscopy study of the high‐frequency region (800‐1200 cm−1) confirmed that surface densification was the result of interatomic changes in the distribution of silicon‐nonbridging oxygen (NBO) bond lengths and Si‐O‐Si bond angle distribution (BAD). Modifier valency contributes to structural rigidity and the degree of disorder a glass can incur during the deposition of high‐energy laser pulses. Varying soda content caused larger shift in the laser modified Q3 band position and width compared to the calcium modified system. Increasing laser fluence was found to affect the position of Q3 Si‐O stretching mode as well as the band width, indicating the increased degree of disorder laser pulses induce. These results underscore the role of modifier ions in the laser‐induced densification of the SLS glasses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

L-cycloserine (L-CS) appears to inhibit HIV reproduction and infectivity. L-CS inhibits the synthesis of chemicals called sphingolipids, which are normal components of cell membranes. L-CS affects the CD4 receptor on T cells, which is the receptor that HIV attaches to. Researchers added L-CS in different concentrations to a CD4 T cell line before and after adding HIV to the cell line. L-CS was not directly toxic to the cells before the introduction of HIV. After infecting the cells with HIV, a 5 microgram per milliliter dose of L-CS reduced the number of HIV-infected cells by 88% and also reduced the levels of p24 core protein, which is produced when the virus reproduces. It also completely inhibited the formation of syncytia, which occurs when infected cells clump together. Lower doses of L-CS had no effect on HIV infectivity. Animal studies have shown that the high dose of L-CS is not toxic. L-CS could be an alternative treatment for HIV infection.
