The use of Thin-foil Proton Recoil (TPR) spectrometers for application in neutron spectroscopy is of high relevance for future fusion devices such as ITER, where neutron spectroscopy will play a crucial role in fuel content monitoring. Existing research based on simulations of the performance of TPR spectrometers at ITER has demonstrated positive results. However, experimental validation of the simulations would greatly benefit the reliability of conclusions. In this study, we designed and constructed a prototype TPR neutron spectrometer and employed a DT neutron generator as a neutron source to perform measurements. We compared the experimental results with the simulation results using the Geant4 model of the experiment. The simulation and experimental results match within silicon detector intrinsic energy resolution. This approach ensures the experimental validation of the Geant4 based simulations of the TPR spectrometer. The experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing nuclear reactions measured in silicon detectors, specifically $^{28}$Si(n,d) and $^{28}$Si(n,$\alpha$), for energy calibration purposes. A comparison of the experiment and the simulation shows that the mean peak energy and full width at half maximum are within 150 keV. The calculated detector efficiency underestimates the experimentally determined efficiency up to 33\%. Discrepancies in the measured energy spectrum indicate the need for a more refined model and experiment control. Overall, the successful validation of the developed Geant4 simulation model against the experimentally measured energy spectra increases confidence in the applicability of such simulation results in other devices. The use of Thin-foil proton recoil (TPR) spectrometers to measure neutrons from Deuterium-Tritium (DT) fusion plasma has been studied previously and is a well established technique for neutron spectrometry. The study presented here focuses on the optimisation of the TPR spectrometer configurations consisting of dE and E silicon detectors. In addition an investigation of the spectrometer's ability to determine fuel ion temperature and fuel ion density ratio in ITER like DT plasmas has been performed. A Python code was developed for the purpose of calculating detection efficiency and energy resolution as a function of several spectrometer geometrical parameters. An optimisation of detection efficiency for selected values of resolution was performed regarding the geometrical spectrometer parameters foil thickness, distance from a foil to the first detector and distance between the two detectors using a multi-objective optimisation, a.k.a Pareto plot analysis. Moreover, the influence of detector segmentation on spectrometer energy resolution and efficiency was investigated. The code also produced response functions for the two selected spectrometer configurations. The SPEC code was used to simulate the spectrometer's performance in determining the fuel ion temperature and fuel ion density ratio n_t/n_d. The results presented include the selected spectrometer configuration with calculated energy resolution and efficiency. For a selected spectrometer resolution of 5% a maximum efficiency of around 0.003% was achieved. Moreover, the detector segmentation allows for a 20% increase in spectrometer efficiency for an energy resolution of 4.3%. The ITER requirements for a 20% accuracy on the n_t/n_d ratio determination and 10% on the temperature determination within a 100ms sampling window can be achieved using a combination of several TPR's of same type, in order to boost efficiency., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The complexity of today's visualization applications demands specific visualization systems tailored for the development of these applications. Frequently, such systems utilize levels of abstraction to improve the application development process, for instance by providing a data flow network editor. Unfortunately, these abstractions result in several issues, which need to be circumvented through an abstraction-centered system design. Often, a high level of abstraction hides low level details, which makes it difficult to directly access the underlying computing platform, which would be important to achieve an optimal performance. Therefore, we propose a layer structure developed for modern and sustainable visualization systems allowing developers to interact with all contained abstraction levels. We refer to this interaction capabilities as usage abstraction levels, since we target application developers with various levels of experience. We formulate the requirements for such a system, derive the desired architecture, and present how the concepts have been exemplary realized within the Inviwo visualization system. Furthermore, we address several specific challenges that arise during the realization of such a layered architecture, such as communication between different computing platforms, performance centered encapsulation, as well as layer-independent development by supporting cross layer documentation and debugging capabilities.

The double-energy double-velocity ($2E$-$2v$) method allows assessing fission-fragment mass yields prior to and after prompt neutron emission with high resolution. It is, therefore, considered as a complementary technique to assess average prompt neutron multiplicity as a function of fragment properties. We have studied the intrinsic features of the $2E$-$2v$ method by means of event-wise generated fission-fragment data and found severe short-comings in the method itself as well as in some common practice of application. We find that the $2E$-$2v$ method leads to large deviations in the correlation between the prompt neutron multiplicity and pre-neutron mass, which deforms and exaggerates the so called `sawtooth' shape of $\bar{\nu}(A)$. We have identified the treatment of prompt neutron emission from the fragments as the origin of the problem. The intrinsic nature of this deficiency, risk to render $2E$-$2v$ experiments much less interesting. We suggest a method to correct the $2E$-$2v$ data, and recommend applying this method to previous data acquired in $2E$-$2v$ experiments, as well., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Measurements of neutron-induced fission cross sections and light-ion production are planned in the energy range 1-40 MeV at the upcoming Neutrons For Science (NFS) facility. In order to prepare our detector setup for the neutron beam with continuous energy spectrum, a simulation software was written using the Geant4 toolkit for both measurement situations. The neutron energy range around 20 MeV is troublesome when it comes to the cross sections used by Geant4 since data-driven cross sections are only available below 20 MeV but not above, where they are based on semi-empirical models. Several customisations were made to the standard classes in Geant4 in order to produce consistent results over the whole simulated energy range. Expected uncertainties are reported for both types of measurements. The simulations have shown that a simultaneous precision measurement of the three standard cross sections H(n,n), $^{235}$U(n,f) and $^{238}$U(n,f) relative to each other is feasible using a triple layered target. As high resolution timing detectors for fission fragments we plan to use Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPACs). The simulation results have put some restrictions on the design of these detectors as well as on the target design. This study suggests a fissile target no thicker than 2 micrometers (1.7 mg/cm$^2$) and a PPAC foil thickness preferably less than 1 micrometer.
