To this end, long-term antibacterial ability of the implant surface is highly desirable to prevent implant-associated infection. In this study, a novel antibacterial coating containing a new antibacterial agent, (Z-)-4-bromo-5-(bromomethylene)-2(5H)-furanone loaded poly(L-lactic acid) nanoparticles, was fabricated on microarc-oxidized titanium for this purpose. The antibacterial coating produced a unique inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus throughout a 60-day study period, which is normally long enough to prevent the infection around implants in the early and intermediate stages. The antibacterial rate for adherent S. aureus was about 100% in the first 10 days and constantly remained over 90% in the following 20 days. Fluorescence staining of adherent S. aureus also confirmed the excellent antibacterial ability of the antibacterial coating. Moreover, in vitro experiments showed an enhanced osteoblast adhesion and proliferation on the antibacterial coating, and more notable cell spread was observed at the early stage. It is therefore concluded that the fabricated antibacterial coating, which exhibits relatively long-term antibacterial ability and excellent biological performance, is a potential and promising strategy to prevent implant-associated infection. Methods: A ligand specific target to lymphatic vessels was selected by immunohistochemical staining on the sections of a Lewis subcutaneous transplanted tumor. The z-average hydrodynamic diameter (HD), zeta potential, and the relaxivity of PEG-USPIO and LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO nanoparticles were determined with a laser particle analyzer and magnetic resonance T2 spin echo sequence, respectively. Prussian blue staining and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of nanoparticle labeled cells were performed to determine the nanoparticles' binding form. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in vitro to evaluate the signal enhancement on the T2 spin echo sequence of the nanoparticle labeled cells. The iron content of the labeled cells after the Prussian blue staining and MRI scanning was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results: The anti-LYVE-1 antibody was used as the specific ligand to synthesize the target probe to the MLECs. The mean z-average HDs of the LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO and PEG-USPIO nanoparticles were 57.42 ± 0.31 nm and 47.91 ± 0.73 nm, respectively, and the mean zeta potentials of the LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO and PEG-USPIO nanoparticles were 12.38 ± 4.87 mV and 2.57 ± 0.83 mV, respectively. The relaxivities of the LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO and PEG-USPIO nanoparticles were 185.48 mM-1s-1 and 608.32 mM-1s-1. Cells binding nanoparticles were visualized as blue granules in the Prussian blue staining. The TEM results of the labeled cells showed the specific localization of nanoparticles. The AAS results of labeled cells after the Prussian blue staining and MRI scanning showed that the LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO nanoparticles had good binding selectivity for MLECs. MRI results indicated that the PEG-USPIO and LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO nanoparticles could generate contrast on T2-weighted imaging, and the correlation between R2 and the iron content of the labeled cells was significantly positive. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO nanoparticles might potentially be used as an MRI contrast agent for targeting MLECs, and the magnetic properties of LYVE-1-PEG-USPIO nanoparticles were suitable for MRI. γ-Tocotrienol (γ-T3) is a major subtype of vitamin E, mainly extracted from palm trees, barley, walnuts, and other plants. γ-T3 has effects on anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, and potential chemoprevention against malignancies. It is still uncompleted to understand the effect of γ-T3 on the inhibitory mechanism of cancer. This study aimed to investigate whether γ-T3 enhanced autophagy in gastric cancer and the underlying molecular mechanism. The results showed that γ-T3 (0-90 μmol/L) inhibited the proliferation of gastric cancer MKN45 cells and AGS cells, and arrested the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase in a dose-dependent manner. Autophagy was increased in MKN45 cells treated with γ-T3 (0-45 μmol/L), especially at a dose of 30 μmol/L for 24 h. These effects were reversed by 3-methyladenine pretreatment. Furthermore, γ-T3 (30 μmol/L) also significantly downregulated the expression of pGSK-3β (ser9) and β-catenin protein in MKN45 cells, and γ-T3 (20 mg/kg b.w.) effectively decreased the growth of MKN45 cell xenografts in BABL/c mice. GSK-3β inhibitor-CHIR-99021 reversed the negative regulation of GSK-3β/β-Catenin signaling and autophagy. Our findings indicated that γ-T3 enhances autophagy in gastric cancer cells mediated by GSK-3β/β-Catenin signaling, which provides new insights into the role of γ-T3 enhancing autophagy in gastric cancer., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Population-level variation and mechanisms behind insulin secretion in response to carbohydrate, protein, and fat remain uncharacterized. We defined prototypical insulin secretion responses to three macronutrients in islets from 140 cadaveric donors, including those with type 2 diabetes. The majority of donors' islets exhibited the highest insulin response to glucose, moderate response to amino acid, and minimal response to fatty acid. However, 9% of donors' islets had amino acid responses, and 8% had fatty acid responses that were larger than their glucose-stimulated insulin responses. We leveraged this heterogeneity and used multi-omics to identify molecular correlates of nutrient responsiveness, as well as proteins and mRNAs altered in type 2 diabetes. We also examined nutrient-stimulated insulin release from stem cell-derived islets and observed responsiveness to fat but not carbohydrate or protein-potentially a hallmark of immaturity. Background: Rhododendron nivale subsp. boreale Philipson et M. N. Philipson is an alpine woody species with ornamental qualities that serve as the predominant species in mountainous scrub habitats found at an altitude of ∼4,200 m. As a high-altitude woody polyploid, this species may serve as a model to understand how plants adapt to alpine environments. Despite its ecological significance, the lack of genomic resources has hindered a comprehensive understanding of its evolutionary and adaptive characteristics in high-altitude mountainous environments., Findings: We sequenced and assembled the genome of R. nivale subsp. boreale, an assembly of the first subgenus Rhododendron and the first high-altitude woody flowering tetraploid, contributing an important genomic resource for alpine woody flora. The assembly included 52 pseudochromosomes (scaffold N50 = 42.93 Mb; BUSCO = 98.8%; QV = 45.51; S-AQI = 98.69), which belonged to 4 haplotypes, harboring 127,810 predicted protein-coding genes. Conjoint k-mer analysis, collinearity assessment, and phylogenetic investigation corroborated autotetraploid identity. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that R. nivale subsp. boreale originated as a neopolyploid of R. nivale and underwent 2 rounds of ancient polyploidy events. Transcriptional expression analysis showed that differences in expression between alleles were common and randomly distributed in the genome. We identified extended gene families and signatures of positive selection that are involved not only in adaptation to the mountaintop ecosystem (response to stress and developmental regulation) but also in autotetraploid reproduction (meiotic stabilization). Additionally, the expression levels of the (group VII ethylene response factor transcription factors) ERF VIIs were significantly higher than the mean global gene expression. We suspect that these changes have enabled the success of this species at high altitudes., Conclusions: We assembled the first high-altitude autopolyploid genome and achieved chromosome-level assembly within the subgenus Rhododendron. In addition, a high-altitude adaptation strategy of R. nivale subsp. boreale was reasonably speculated. Qualitative and quantitatively appropriate insulin secretion is essential for optimal control of blood glucose. Beta-cells of the pancreas produce and secrete insulin in response to glucose and non-glucose stimuli including amino acids. In this manuscript, we review the literature on amino acid-stimulated insulin secretion in oral and intravenous in vivo studies, in addition to the in vitro literature, and describe areas of consensus and gaps in understanding. We find promising evidence that the synergism of amino acid-stimulated insulin secretion could be exploited to develop novel therapeutics, but that a systematic approach to investigating these lines of evidence is lacking. We highlight evidence that supports the relative preservation of amino acid-stimulated insulin secretion compared to glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in type 2 diabetes, and make the case for the therapeutic potential of amino acids. Finally, we make recommendations for research and describe the potential clinical utility of nutrient-based treatments for type 2 diabetes including remission services., (© 2023. Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy and advantages of Tianji orthopedic robot assisted cannulated screw internal fixation for femoral neck fracture., Methods: The clinical data of 41 patients with femoral neck fracture who underwent internal fixation with cannulated screws from January 2019 to January 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. According to different surgical methods, they were divided into Tianji robot group and traditional cannulated screw fixation group (traditional operation group). Among them, there were 18 patients in Tianji robot group including 8 males and 10 females with age of (56.00±4.22) years old, Garden typeⅠ (4 cases), type Ⅱ (11 cases), type Ⅲ (2 cases), and type Ⅳ (1 case). There were 23 patients in the traditional operation group, including 10 males and 13 females, aged (54.87±4.81) years old;there were 5 cases of Garden typeⅠ, 14 cases of type Ⅱ, 3 cases of type Ⅲ and 1 case of type Ⅳ. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, fluoroscopy times, guide needle placement times, operation costs and other indicators were observed and compared between two groups. Harris score was used to evaluate hip joint function 12 months after operation., Results: The wounds of all patients healed in Grade A without complications. There were significant differences between two groups in terms of operation time, times of intraoperative fluoroscopy, times of guide needle placement, amount of intraoperative bleeding, and operation cost ( P <0.05). All 41 patients were followed up for at least 12 months. The fractures of both groups were healed. There was no infection, screw loosening, fracture displacement and femoral head necrosis in Tianji robot group during follow-up;Screw loosening occurred in 2 patients in the traditional operation group during follow-up. At 12 months after operation, Harris hip joint function score of Tianji robot group was higher than that of traditional operation group in daily activity, lameness, joint activity score and total score ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: Tianji robot assisted nail placement is a better method for the treatment of femoral neck fracture, which improves the surgical efficiency, is more accurate, has higher success rate of one-time nail placement, shorter operation time, less radiation, and has better hip joint function recovery after surgery.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of transvesical incision in the treatment of ejaculatory duct obstruction., Methods: The clinical data of 26 male infertile patients with ejaculatory duct obstruction were retrospectively analysed at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from June 2020 to August 2021. All patients were treated with seminal vesicle neck incision for ejaculatory duct obstruction. The general clinical characteristics, intraoperative conditions and postoperative effects on the patients were recorded, and the therapeutic effect was evaluated., Results: The ejaculatory duct was found through fenestration, and the seminal vesicle gland was smoothly entered in 25 patients (96.2%). Among them, 22 cases underwent bilateral endoscopy and three underwent unilateral endoscopy. Sperm appeared in 23 cases (88.5%) 3 months after surgery. The sperm concentration and motility postoperatively at 6 months were higher than that at 3 months postoperatively. No postoperative complications, such as epididymitis or retrograde ejaculation, occurred., Conclusion: Searching for the ejaculatory duct via the neck of the prostatic utricle, assisted by a low-energy holmium laser, is a new method for the treatment of ejaculatory duct obstruction. The study explored the clinical efficacy of a type 5 phosphodiesterase inhibitor (PDE5i) combined with Ziyin Baihuo granules in the treatment of patients suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED) with yin deficiency and fire-hyperactivity syndrome. A total of 163 patients with erectile dysfunction were divided into observation and control groups. The observation group took tadalafil (Cialis) and Ziyin Baihuo granules orally, and the control group took only tadalafil orally, for 12 weeks. An additional 40 healthy people were selected as a normal group for comparison of the sex hormone levels before and after treatment of the participants in the erectile dysfunction group. After treatment, the symptoms of dry throat and tongue, tidal fever and night sweats, liking cold and avoiding heat, and waist pain showed significant improvement in the observation group ( p < .05). Compared with before treatment, the clinical indexes of erectile function in the control group and the observation group were improved after treatment ( p < .05). After treatment, Ziyin Baihuo granules combined with tadalafil restored the abnormal indexes of blood ( p < .05) in the observation group. Our research shows that PDE5i combined with Ziyin Baihuo granules could effectively improve erectile function.

Background: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has replaced viral hepatitis as the main driver of the rising morbidity and mortality associated with cirrhosis and liver cancer worldwide, while no FDA-approved therapies are currently known. Kinsenoside (KD), naturally isolated from Anoectochilus roxburghii, possesses multiple biological activities, including lipolysis, anti-inflammation, and hepatoprotection. However, the effects of KD on NASH remain unclear., Purpose: This study aimed to explore the roles of KD in NASH and its engaged mechanisms., Methods: Two typical animal models of NASH, mice fed a methionine-choline-deficient (MCD) diet (representing non-obese NASH) and mice fed a high-fat and -fructose diet (HFFD) (representing obese NASH), were used to investigate the effect of KD on NASH in vivo. Transcriptome sequencing was performed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of KD. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated THP-1 cells and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1)-activated LX-2 cells were applied to further explore the effects and mechanisms of KD in vitro., Results: The intragastric administration of KD remarkably alleviated MCD/HFFD-induced murine NASH almost in a dose-dependent manner. Specifically, KD reduced lipid accumulation, inflammation, and fibrosis in the liver of NASH mice. KD ameliorated alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) abnormalities. In addition, it decreased the level of serum proinflammatory factors (IL-12p70, IL-6, TNF-α, MCP-1, IFN-γ) and the hepatic expression of typical fibrosis-related molecules (α-SMA, Col-I, TIMP-1). Mechanically, KD attenuated the MCD/HFFD-induced NASH through the inhibition of the NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. Consistently, KD reduced inflammation stimulated by LPS in THP-1 cells via suppressing the NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway. Furthermore, it prevented the activation of LX-2 cells directly, by inhibiting the proliferation stimulated by TGF-β1, and indirectly, by inactivating the NLRP3 inflammasome in macrophages., Conclusion: For the first time, the practical improvement of NASH by KD was revealed. Our study found that KD exerted its alleviative effects on NASH through the inhibition of the NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. The main challenge for sodium/potassium ion storage is to find the suitable host materials to accommodate the larger-sized Na + /K + and conquer the sluggish chemical kinetics. Herein, by selenation of polyoxometalate in electrospinning fiber, a novel MoO 2 /MoSe 2 heterostructure embedded in one-dimensional (1D) N,P-doped carbon nanofiber (MoO 2 /MoSe 2 @NPC) is rationally constructed to show distinct enhancement of rate performance and cycle life for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium ion batteries (PIBs). The 1D skeleton of MoO 2 /MoSe 2 @NPC decreases the diffusion pathway of Na + /K + , and the doping of N/P heteroatoms in carbon fiber creates abundant active sites and provides good reachability for Na + /K + transportation. MoSe 2 nanosheets grow in the bulk phase of MoO 2 via in situ local phase transformation to achieve effective and firm heterointerfaces. Especially, the exposure extent of heterointerfaces can be controlled by treatment temperature during the preparation process, and the optimized heterointerfaces result in an ideal synergic effect between MoO 2 and MoSe 2 . DFT calculations confirm that the internal electric field in the heterogeneous interface guides the electron transfer from MoO 2 to MoSe 2 , combined with strong adsorption capacity toward sodium/potassium, facilitating ion/electron transfer kinetics. It is confirmed that the MoO 2 /MoSe 2 @NPC anode for SIBs delivers 382 mA h g -1 under 0.1 A g -1 upon 200 cycles; meanwhile, a reversible capacity of 266 mA h g -1 is maintained even under 2 A g -1 after 2000 cycles. For PIBs, it can reach up to 216 mA h g -1 in the 200th cycle and still retain 125 mA h g -1 after 2000 cycles under 1 A g -1 . This study opens up a new interface manipulation strategy for the design of anode materials to boost fast Na + /K + storage kinetics.

A new pair of enantiomeric isoprenylated chromone derivatives, (±)-pestaloficiol X [(±)- 1 ], along with a known compound pestaloficiol J ( 2 ), were isolated from the plant endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis sp. The racemic mixture 1 was separated through chiral HPLC. The structures of new compounds (±)- 1 were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data and their absolute configurations were further configured through computational analysis of their electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Compound (+)- 1 showed significant inhibitory potency against HL-60 and HEP-3B cell lines, with IC 50 values of 1.35 ± 0.15 and 3.70 ± 0.33 μM, respectively, while compound (-)- 1 showed significant inhibitory potency against HL-60 and HEP-3B cell lines, with IC 50 values of 2.39 ± 0.26 and 2.99 ± 0.35 μM, respectively.

Background: Growth in insect pest populations poses a significant threat to ecosystem functions and services, societal development, and food security in alpine regions under climate change. Risk assessments are important prioritization tools for pest management, which must be used to study insect pest expansion in alpine ecosystems under global warming. We used species distribution modeling to simulate the current and future distribution probabilities of 58 insect pest species in the Qinghai Province, China, based on a comprehensive field investigation. Subsequently, general linear modeling was used to explore the relationship between the distribution probability of these species and the damage caused by them. Finally, we assessed the ecological risk of insect pest expansion across different alpine ecosystems under climate change., Results: Climate change could increase the distribution probabilities of insect pest species across different alpine ecosystems. However, the presence of insect pest species may not correspond to the damage occurrence in alpine ecosystems based on percent leaf loss, amount of stunting, and seedling death of their host species. Significant positive relationships between distribution probability and damage occurrence were found for several of the examined insect pest species. Insect pest expansion is likely to increase extensively in alpine ecosystems under increasing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission scenarios., Conclusion: The relationships between distribution probability and damage occurrence should be considered in species distribution modeling for risk assessment of insect pest expansion under climate change. This study aims to investigate active phytochemicals isolated from Pyrola incarnata Fisch. (P. incarnata) and their protection against neuroinflammation induced by LPS. Betulin, accompanied with other 9 compounds, were isolated from P. incarnata and elucidated by spectroscopic analysis ( 1 H-, 13 C NMR). ELISA kits and the measurement of NO production based on Griess reaction showed that betulin (5) (250 μg/mL) could suppress LPS-induced activation of microglial cell BV-2 better than others by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β) expression and NO production. With the guidance of computer-aided drug design and the analysis of biological experiment, we demonstrated betulin could reduce LPS-induced iNOS expression, prevent JNKs pathways, and down-regulate the phosphorylation levels of NF-κB/p65. In conclusion, betulin isolated from P. incarnata possessed outstanding anti-neuroinflammation potential, presumably related to iNOS expression, JNKs and NF-κB/p65 pathways. The Hengduan Mountains (HDM) biodiversity hotspot exhibits exceptional alpine plant diversity. Here, we investigate factors driving intraspecific divergence within a HDM alpine species Salix brachista (Cushion willow), a common component of subnival assemblages. We produce a high-quality genome assembly for this species and characterize its genetic diversity, population structure and pattern of evolution by resequencing individuals collected across its distribution. We detect population divergence that has been shaped by a landscape of isolated sky island-like habitats displaying strong environmental heterogeneity across elevational gradients, combined with population size fluctuations that have occurred since approximately the late Miocene. These factors are likely important drivers of intraspecific divergence within Cushion willow and possibly other alpine plants with a similar distribution. Since intraspecific divergence is often the first step toward speciation, the same factors can be important contributors to the high alpine species diversity in the HDM.

γ-Tocotrienol (γ-T3) exhibits the activity of anticancer via regulating cell signaling pathways. Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), one of the crucial pro-inflammatory factors, is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, and migration of tumor. In the present study, NF-κB activity inhibited by γ-T3 was investigated in gastric cancer cells. Cell proliferation, NF-κB activity, active protein phosphatase type 2A (PP2A), and ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) protein were explored using 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT), methylene blue, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), malachite green, luciferase, and Western blotting assays. The effects of γ-T3 on tumor growth and the expression of NF-κB and PP2A proteins were also further examined by implanting human gastric cancer cells in a BALB/c nude mouse model. The results showed that γ-T3 significantly inhibited the cell proliferation and attenuated the NF-κB activity in vitro and in vivo. γ-T3 dramatically increased PP2A activity and protein expression, which suppressed ATM phosphorylation and its translocation to the cytoplasm in gastric cancer cells. Thus, our findings may provide mechanistic insight into effects of γ-T3 on the regulation of NF-κB activity by a PP2A-dependent mechanism and suggest that PP2A may serve as a molecular target for a potential chemopreventive agent.

Objective: The primary aim of the study was to compare two nutritional status evaluation tools: the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002). Using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Core Questionnaire 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), the second aim was to provide constructive advice regarding the quality of life of patients with malignancy., Methods: This study enrolled 312 oncology patients and assessed their nutritional status and quality of life using the PG-SGA, NRS-2002, and EORTC QLQ-C30., Results: The data indicate that 6% of the cancer patients were well nourished. The SGA-A had a higher sensitivity (93.73%) but a poorer specificity (2.30%) than the NRS-2002 (69.30% and 25.00%, respectively) after comparison with albumin. There was a low negative correlation and a high similarity between the PG-SGA and NRS-2002 for evaluating nutritional status, and there was a significant difference in the median PG-SGA scores for each of the SGA classifications (P < 0.001). The SGA-C group showed the highest PG-SGA scores and lowest body mass index. The majority of the target population received 2 points for each item in our 11-item questionnaire from the EORTC QLQ-C30., Conclusion: The data indicate that the PG-SGA is more useful and suitable for evaluating nutritional status than the NRS-2002. In the present study, we used genetic data and ecological niche modelling to explore possible historical introgressions among the species of Rodgersia (Saxifragaceae) in central-southwest China. Markedly differentiated chloroplast haplotypes were found in R. aesculifolia, R. sambucifolia and the Lijiang (LJ) population of R. pinnata, respectively, and differentiated chloroplast haplotypes within each of them showed the closest relationships with haplotypes from different species. ITS cloning did not reveal any shared ribotype between R. aesculifolia and the remaining species. Historical introgression between R. aesculifolia and R. sambucifolia (or R. pinnata) seems to be the most plausible explanation according to the geographical pattern and derivative status of putative introgressed chloroplast haplotypes, and also from morphological evidence. Introgressions were also found among R. sambucifolia, R. pinnata, and R. henricii from Yunnan. Frequent gene exchanges may have promoted the diversity of leaf shapes in this genus. Ecological niche modelling indicated that past secondary contact following range shifts during Pleistocene cold periods may have provided opportunities for ancient introgression between R. aesculifolia and adjacent species., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. γ-tocotrienol (γ-T3), a tocotrienol isoform belonging to the vitamin E family, has been revealed to exert inhibitory effects on proliferation, migration and invasion in human gastric cancer cells. However, its precise mechanism of action is still unclear and needs to be further tested. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is well known for its key role in promoting the migration and invasion abilities of human gastric cancer cells. In light of these data, our study aimed to validate whether the inhibitory actions of γ-T3 could be achieved by downregulation of COX-2 activity in vitro. In the present study, a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was performed to observe proliferation in human gastric cancer cells (SGC-7901 and MGC-803 cells), and wound healing and Transwell chamber assays were performed to detect migration and invasion. Western blot analyses were performed to analyse the relative expression of COX-2, matrix metalloproteinases-2 and -9 (MMP-2 and MMP-9) proteins, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were used to determine the exocrine roles of MMP-2 and MMP-9. The results revealed that γ-T3 exerted significant inhibitory effects on proliferation, migration, invasion and COX-2 protein expression, as well as on exocrine functions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in SGC-7901 and MGC-803 cells. Therefore, our results indicated that γ-T3 exerts inhibitory effects on migration and invasion, which may be mediated through downregulation of COX-2 expression in SGC-7901 and MGC-803 cells.

Dirhenium halide dianions received considerable attention in past decades due to the unusual metal-metal quadruple bond. The systematic structural evolution of dirhenium halide clusters has not been sufficiently studied and hence is not well-understood. In this work, we report an in-depth investigation on the structures and electronic properties of doubly charged dirhenium halide clusters Re 2 X 8 2- (X = F, Cl, Br, I). Our computational efforts rely on the well-tested unbiased CALYPSO (Crystal structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization) method combined with density functional theory calculations. We find that all ground-state Re 2 X 8 2- clusters have cube-like structures of D 4h symmetry with two Re atoms encapsulated in halogen framework. The reasonable agreement between the simulated and experimental photoelectron spectrum of the Re 2 Cl 8 2- cluster supports strongly the reliability of our computational strategy. The chemical bonding analysis reveals that the δ bond is the pivotal factor for the ground-state Re 2 X 8 2- (X = F, Cl, Br, I) clusters to maintain D 4h symmetric cube-like structures, and the enhanced stability of Re 2 Cl 8 2- is mainly attributed to the chemical bonding of 5d orbital of Re atoms and 3p orbital of Cl atoms.

Kinsenoside is a main active component isolated from plants of the genus Anoectochilus, and exhibits many biological activities and pharmacological effects, including hepatoprotective, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-hyperliposis, anti-inflammatory, vascular protective and anti-osteoporosis effects and so on, which is contributing to its promising potency in disease treatments. This review aims to recapitulate the pharmacological functions of kinsenoside, as well as its source, extraction, identification, quantitative analysis, pharmacokinetics, synthesis and patent information. The data reported in this work can confirm the therapeutic potential of kinsenoside and provide useful information for further new drug development.

Transition-metal (TM)-doped boron clusters have received considerable attention in recent years, in part, because of their remarkable size-dependent structural and electronic properties. However, the structures of medium-sized boron clusters doped with TM atoms are still not well-known because of the much increased complexity of the potential surface as well as the rapid increase in the number of low-energy isomers, which are the challenges in cluster structural searches. Here, by means of an unbiased structure search, we systematically investigated the structural evolution of medium-sized tantalum-doped boron clusters, TaB n 0/- (n = 10-20). The results revealed that TaB n 0/- (n = 10-15) clusters adopt half-sandwich molecular geometries, with the notable exception of TaB 10 - , while for n = 16-18 and 19-20, the lowest-energy clusters are characterized by drum-type geometries and tubular molecules with two B atoms on the top, respectively. Good agreement between the calculated and experimental photoelectron spectra strongly support the validity of our global minimum structures. Molecular orbital and adaptive natural density partitioning analyses indicate that the enhanced stability of half-sandwich TaB 12 - is due to the strong interaction of the Ta atom (5d orbitals) with surrounding B atoms (2p orbitals) and σ B-B bonds in the B 12 moiety.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of viscosity of contrast agent (CA) on intrarenal oxygenation and diffusion as measured by blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a rat model., Materials and Methods: Radiocontrast iodixanol formulated in three viscosities were designated 270, 320, and 350 (mg iodine/mL). Sixty-three male Wistar rats were divided into four groups. Saline and iodixanol (4 g iodine/kg) were administered. MR images were acquired on a 3.0T scanner at baseline and at 1 hour, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours postinjection of solutions. BOLD-MRI was performed with a multiple gradient-recalled-echo sequence. The changes in R2*, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), fractional anisotropy (FA), histology, and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) immunoexpression were evaluated. The R2*, ADC, and FA values were normalized to baseline to calculate ΔR2*, ΔADC, and ΔFA., Results: Compared with baseline levels, distinct elevation of ΔR2* (P < 0.05) and obvious decrease in ΔADC (P < 0.01) and ΔFA (P < 0.05) were observed in all the anatomical compartments at 1 hour after administration of CA. The absolute values in ΔR2*, ΔADC, and ΔFA increased with increases in CA viscosity, and differed significantly between the CA groups in renal cortex (CO), outer stripe of outer medulla (OSOM), and inner stripe of outer medulla (ISOM) (all P < 0.05). A significant positive correlation was observed between ΔR2* and HIF-1α expression (P < 0.001, r = 0.75). Significant negative correlations were observed between ΔADC, ΔFA, and pathologies in CO, OSOM, ISOM (all P < 0.001, r = -0.68-0.87; all P < 0.001, r = -0.60-0.66)., Conclusion: The effect of CA viscosity on intrarenal oxygenation and diffusion was viscosity-dependent, and was identified using BOLD-MRI and DTI., Level of Evidence: 1 Technical Efficacy: Stage 3 J. The accuracy and sensitivity of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for prostate cancer diagnosis is often poor; however, the reasons for its inaccuracy have rarely been investigated, especially with respect to age. In this study, 476 healthy males, aged 10-89 years, were stratified into eight age groups, and levels of seven markers were determined: total PSA (tPSA), free PSA (fPSA), %fPSA, isoform [-2]proPSA (p2PSA), p2PSA/tPSA, %p2PSA, and the prostate health index (PHI). Both tPSA and fPSA levels increased with age. The tPSA level was highest (1.39 ng ml-1) at 70-79 years; %fPSA was highest (0.57 ng ml-1) at 10-19 years; and %p2PSA was lowest (18.33 ng ml-1) at 40-49 years. Both p2PSA and p2PSA/tPSA had relatively flat curves and showed no correlation with age (P = 0.222). PHI was a sensitive age-associated marker (P < 0.05), with two peaks and one trough. The coverage rates and radiance graphs of PHI and %p2PSA were more distinctive than those of tPSA and the other markers. In subjects older than 69 years, PHI and %p2PSA both began to decrease, approximately 10 years earlier than the decrease in tPSA. Our results suggest that the clinical diagnosis of prostate cancer using PSA should be investigated more comprehensively based on patient age. Moreover, %p2PSA and PHI could be considered as earlier markers that may be more suitable than PSA alone.

Objective: To observe the anesthetic effect and safety of different doses of dexmedetomidine combined with ropivacaine for brachial plexus nerve block in children undergoing polydactyly surgery., Methods: Eighty children undergoing polydactyly surgery were randomized into 4 groups to receive brachial plexus nerve block with dexmedetomidine at 0.25, 0.50 or 0.75 µg/kg combined with 0.25% ropivacaine (0.20 mL/kg) (D1, D2, and D3 groups, respectively) or with 0.25% ropivacaine (0.20 mL/kg) only (control group). The onset time, duration of brachial plexus nerve block, awakening time, success rate, and incidence of complications were compared among the groups. Results In D2 and D3 groups, the onset time and awakening time were shorter and anesthesia lasted longer than those in the control group. The onset time and awakening time were shorter and anesthesia maintenance time was longer in D3 group than in D1 group. The success rates of brachial plexus nerve block were significantly higher in D1-3 groups than in the control group (P<0.05). Hematoma was found in one of the patients. In each of the 4 groups, laryngeal nerve block occurred in 1 child and respiratory depression in another; 2 or 3 patients had Horner syndrome, and 1 patient in D3 group experienced an episode of lowered heart beat to below 70 min -1 . All the complications were managed properly and the patients all recovered uneventfully., Conclusion: Brachial plexus nerve block with 0.5 µg/kg dexmedetomidine combined with 0.25% ropivacaine (0.20 mL/kg) is safe for effective anesthesia in children undergoing surgery for polydactyly.

Sodium is one of the best examples of a free-electron-like metal and of a certain technological interest. However, an unambiguous determination of the structural evolution of sodium clusters is challenging. Here, we performed an unbiased structure search among neutral and anionic sodium clusters in the medium size range of 10-25 atoms, using the Crystal structure AnaLYsis by Particle Swarm Optimization (CALYPSO) method. Geometries are determined by CALYPSO structure searches, followed by reoptimization of a large number of candidate structures. For most cluster sizes the simulated photoelectron spectra of the lowest-energy structures are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, indicating that the current ground-state structures are the true minima. The equilibrium geometries show that, for both neutral and anionic species, the structural evolution from bilayer structures to layered outsides with interior atoms occurs at n = 16. A novel unprecedented honeycomb-like structure of Na 20 cluster with C 3 symmetry is uncovered, which is more stable than the prior suggested structure based on pentagonal structural motifs.

The surface modification of the TiO2 photoelectrode film is one of the promising ways to improve the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). In this work for the acid treatment of TiO2 powder, fluorine containing compounds such as trifluoroacetic acid was carried out to enhance the properties of photoanode. In order to investigate the effect of trifluoroacetyl group, the TiO2 nanopowders were also treated with different acids such as acetic acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and sulfuric acid and their properties were compared. The TiO2 powders treated with both acetic acid and TFA have possessed smooth surface morphologies as well as enhanced particle dispersions with reduced particle sizes. Photoelectrodes prepared for these two kinds of TiO2 powders accommodated high amounts of dye loading and exhibited excellent light transmittance (wavelength region of 400–600 nm). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis showed the smallest radius of the semicircle which indicates the enhanced rate of electron transport for the cell based photoelectrode with trifluoroacetic acid treated TiO2 powder. The solar cell from the untreated TiO2 film showed the power conversion efficiency of 8.86% and the highest efficiency of 9.51% was achieved by the cell fabricated from trifluoroacetic acid treated TiO2 film.

Objective: To compare clinical efficacy of double titanium plate and clavicular hook plate for the treatment of Neer II distal clavicular fracture., Methods: From April 2013 to June 2015, 42 patients with Neer II distal clavicle fractures were non-randomly selected, including 25 males and 17 females. All patients were fresh closed fractures. Twenty patients were treated with double titanium plate with tight rope(group A), including 11 males and 9 females aged from 16 to 49 years old with an average age of(33.8±10.7) years;the time from injury to operation ranged from 2 to 5 days with an average of (3.5±1.8) days. Twenty-two patients were treated with clavicle hook plate(group B), including 14 males and 8 females aged from 27 to 53 years old with an average age of (37.7±9.9) years;the time from injury to operation ranged from 2 to 5 days with an average of (3.1±2.0) days. Operative time, blood loss, hospital stays and postoperative complications were observed and compared; fracture healing were compared among preoperative, postoperative at 1, 3 and 6 months; VAS and ASES scoring were used to evaluate shoulder function., Results: All patients were followed up from 6 to 12 months with an average of 7.2 months. All incisions were healed at stage I. Blood loss in group A were less than that of group B( P <0.05); while there were no significant difference in hospital stays and operative time between two groups. No shoulder pain occurred in group A, 4 cases occurred shoulder pain in group B, and had significant difference. Fracture healing time ranged from 3 to 6 months with an average of 4.3 months. VAS score and ASES score in group A were higher than that of group B in pain, function and total score., Conclusions: Compared with clavicle hook plate, double titanium plate has advantages of shorter incision wound, less bleeding and simply operation, less complications, and could avoid pain for removing internal fixation. Over reduction of acromioclavicular joint during operation does not affect its superior curative effect. The full vibrational spectra especially those high-lying vibrational energies in the dissociation region of four specific electronic states 1(3)Δ(g), 33Σ(+)(g), 1(3)Σ-(g) and b(3)Π(u) have been obtained by using the improved variational algebraic method (VAM). The analytical potential energy functions (APEFs) of these electronic states are also determined with corresponding adjustable parameter λ by using the variational algebraic energy consistent method (VAECM) based on the VAM vibrational spectra. The full vibrational energies, vibrational spectroscopic constants, force constants f(n), and expansion coefficients a(n) of the VAECM potential are also tabulated for each electronic state in this study. The results show that the VAECM analytical potentials are superior to some other widely used analytical ones, and do not have the unphysical tiny barriers existing in the precious AECM potentials.

Novel organic pyridinium ylide sensitizers (NO109-111) consisting of various anchoring groups were synthesized and characterized for applications in dye sensitized solar cells. Compared with the pyridine-N-oxide dye (NO108), the ylide sensitizers with strong electron-withdrawing acceptors exhibited dominant ultraviolet absorption properties and efficient binding abilities to the TiO2 surface. Among these dyes, the pyridinium ylide NO111 sensitized solar cell showed the highest efficiency (5.15%), which was improved to 7.41% by employing coadsorbent chenodeoxycholic acid.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between renal corticomedullary differentiation, renal cortical thickness and age-related changes with non-contrast-enhanced steady-state free precession(SSFP) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spatially selective inversion recovery(IR) pulse technology as well as its applied value ., Methods: A total of 76 healthy volunteers had been recruited from August 2014 to June 2015 in First Hospital of China Medical University.All volunteers were divided into three groups: 2-40 years old, 41-60 years old, 61-80 years old. All 76 volunteers underwent non-contrast-enhanced steady-state free precession(SSFP) 3.0 T MRI scan using variable inversion times (TIs)(TI=1 000, 1 100, 1 200, 1 300, 1 400, 1 500, 1 600, 1 700 ms). The renal corticomedullary differentiation was observed and the signal intensity of renal cortex and medulla were measured respectively as well in order to calculate renal corticomedullary contrast ratio. Besides, renal cortical thickness and renal size were measured., Results: All 76 volunteers were successfully performed all the sequences of MRI scan, including 152 useful imaging of kidney in total. The renal corticomedullary differentiation was clearly shown in all subjects. There was negative correlation between the optimal inversion time(TI) and age(r=-0.65, P<0.01). Similarly, negative correlation was observed between renal corticomedullary contrast ratio and age(r=-0.35, P<0.01). The mean renal cortical thickness of all subjects was (5.33±0.71)mm and there were statistically significant difference among those different groups, which was negative-related with age(r=-0.79, P<0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between sexuality and renal cortical thickness.Additionally, renal cortical thickness had no statistically significant difference in both sides of kidneys., Conclusion: The renal corticomedullary differentiation is depicted clearly by means of non-contrast-enhanced steady-state free precession MRI with spatially selective inversion recovery pulse technology. The optimal inversion time decreases along with the increase of age. In the meanwhile, the renal cortical thickness could be measured truthfully and accurately.

The effects of exogenous nitrogen on N 2 O production processes in the soils of un-restoration wetland (R 0 ), restoration wetland since 2007 (R 2007 ) and restoration wetland since 2002 (R 2002 ) of the Yellow River estuary were studied, and the contributions of different processes in N 2 O production were determined. Results showed that the N 2 O production of restoration wetland soils (R 2002 and R 2007 ) with NO 3 - -N addition was much higher than that with NH 4 + -N addition, but both NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N additions demonstrated inhibition on the N 2 O production of soils in R 0 . Although the effect of NO 3 - -N addition on the total N 2 O production of topsoil in R 2002 was significantly higher than those in R 2007 , the values in R 2002 and R 2007 were greatly increased with increasing NO 3 - -N addition. The denitrification and nitrifier denitrification processes in restoration wetland soils (R 2002 and R 2007 ) were greatly affected by NO 3 - -N addition, but no significant influence on the non-biological processes of soil in R 0 was observed. Although NH 4 + -N addition did not produce significant effects on the total N 2 O production of wetland soils, the nitrifier denitrification process in R 0 soil, the nitrification process in R 2007 soil and the non-biological process in R 2002 soil were generally stimulated. In R 0 and R 2002 soils, the N 2 O produced by non-biological processes was generally eleva-ted with NH 4 + -N addition, while with NO 3 - -N addition, the non-biological processes generating N 2 O in R 0 , R 2002 and R 2007 soils were generally inhibited, which was closely correlated with the regulation of soil pH caused by the import of exogenous nitrogen. This study found that the enrichment of NO 3 - -N greatly enhanced the total N 2 O production of wetland soils and significantly altered the original contribution patterns of biological and non-biological processes to N 2 O production. Thus, special attention should be paid on the influences of nutrient import (particularly NO 3 - -N enrichment) induced by ecological restoration project on N 2 O production of wetland soils.

Background: To evaluate the effects of contrast agents containing increasing concentrations of iodine on the renal oxygenation level determined by blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a rabbit model of diabetic nephropathy., Methods: BOLD-MRI was performed using saline or iodinated (I) contrast agents (200, 240, 300, 350 and 400 mg I/mL) at 1, 24, 48, and 72 h after experimentally inducing type 2 diabetic nephropathy in rabbits. Differences in renal oxygenation levels between type 1 and type 2 diabetic nephropathy were also assessed by BOLD-MRI after injecting 400 mg I/mL of contrast agent., Results: Contrast agents increased the R2* values of the renal cortex, outer medulla, and inner medulla to the maximum levels at 24 h. The R2* values then decreased to their lowest levels at 72 h. The R2* was highest following injection of 400 mg I/mL, especially in the outer medulla. The R2* values were not significantly different between types 1 and 2 diabetic nephropathy., Conclusions: Iodinated contrast agents had the greatest influence on renal outer medulla oxygenation level at 24 h in type 2 diabetic nephropathy, with the greatest effects observed at the 400 mg I/mL dose level. There were no differences in BOLD-MRI values between type 1 and type 2 diabetic nephropathy after administering the contrast agent at 400 mg I/mL.

By using the method of time-space mutual substitution, the contribution of different processes in wetland soil N2O production was studied in the un-restoration wetland (R0), restoration wetland since 2007 (R2007) and restoration wetland since 2002 (R2002) of the Yellow River estuary to evaluate the effectiveness of the restoration projects. Results showed wetland soil total N2O production had a significant difference in different restoration phases, but the N2O release was the main source. The N2O production in restoration wetland was higher than that in un-restoration wetland. The N2O production wss mainly due to the nitrification and nitrifier denitrification processes, while the denitrification process had great weakening effects on N2O production, which was closely related to the physical and chemical properties of wetland soils in different restoration phases. The non-biological processes made greater contributions to N2O production and these were mainly due to that iron was reductive, while the Yellow River estuary was an area of highly active iron. Although N2O production in wetland soils was the results of biological processes combined with non-biological processes in different restoration phases, non-biological processes had larger influences and should be paid a special attention. There were different influences on wetland soil processes generating N2O between temperature and water content, indicating responses of soil microbial activities to temperature and water content were different. In addition, the N2O production contents ranged from 0.37 +/- 0.08 nmol x (kg x h) (-1) to 9.75 +/- 7.64 nmol x (kg x h) (-1) in marshes of the Yellow River estuary, which was slightly higher than those in the S. alterniflora wetland soils of the Min River estuary, but significantly lower than those in the C. malaccensis wetland soils of the Min River estuary, the grassland soils and the aerobic forest soils. We found that the long-term implements of ecological restoration project in the Yellow River estuary obviously promoted N2O production, so we should consider two factors of landscape restoration and weakening greenhouse gases in the next wetland restoration project.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the value of computed tomographic (CT) spinal angiography with 256-slice CT and fast dynamic contrast-enhanced 3-dimensional magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) at 3.0 T in the diagnosis of spinal vascular malformations., Methods: Seventeen patients who presented with suspected spinal vascular diseases by initial magnetic resonance and clinical findings all underwent CT spinal angiography. Among these, 10 patients underwent MRA, 15 patients underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA) within 3 to 5 days, and 8 patients finally underwent surgical treatment., Results: Computed tomographic angiography examination clearly showed the abnormal vascular lesions in 16 of the 17 patients, including 7 patients with the diagnosis of spinal dural arteriovenous fistula, 7 patients with perimedullary arteriovenous fistula, and 2 patients with spinal arteriovenous malformations. The results were consistent with the diagnosis of DSA or surgery. One patient was poorly diagnosed. The fistulas could be seen in 12 patients; feeding arteries were correctly displayed in 12 patients. The fistulas and feeding arteries were accurately shown in 7 of 10 patients by MRA; DSA results were also negative in the other 3 patients., Conclusions: Spinal angiography with 256-slice CT and contrast-enhanced MRA at 3.0 T can clearly show the extent of spinal vascular malformations, feeding arteries, and fistulas. They are safe, noninvasive, as well as rapid and can shorten the time of DSA diagnosis and treatment.

Objective: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are one of the most important components of tumor microenvironment. CAFs are believed to play an important role in tumor invasion and metastasis. Recently, fibroblast activation protein (FAP), a type II integral membrane glycoprotein belonging to the serine protease family, has emerged as a specific marker of CAFs. FAP was overexpressed in stromal fibroblasts of solid malignancies, however, the role of FAP on the process of invasion and metastasis of gastric carcinomas is still unknown., Methods: Expression of FAP level was detected by immunohistochemistry in 60 gastric cancer surgical specimens (28 with omentum metastasis and 32 without), 20 normal human gastric tissues and omentum of 10 nonneoplastic gastric diseases. Fibroblasts were isolated from patient's tissues in the distal normal zones and tumor zones respectively, which were correspondingly designated as normal zone fibroblasts (NFs) and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). To explore the effects of FAP on NFs or CAFs, fibroblasts were co-cultured with human gastric cancer cell line MGC-803 cells. The ability of invasion and migration of MGC-803 cells was evaluated after transfecting FAP siRNA into CAFs of gastric carcinomas., Results: We investigated the level of expression of FAP in surgical specimens, and found overexpressed in CAFs and non-expressed in NFs. Expression of FAP level in CAFs is significantly associated with Lauren classification,the degree of differentiation, depth of tumor invasion and TNM stage, but it is not correlated to age and gender in gastric carcinoma patients. There was positive correlation between the FAP level with metastasis to the omentum(p < 0.05, R(2) = 0.2736, p < 0.05, R(2) = 0.1479). In addition, the invasion and migration abilities of MGC-803 cells were significantly increased when cells were co-cultured with CAFs. On the other hand, invasion and migration abilities were significantly decreased by 46.9 and 50.3%, respectively, after knocking down FAP in CAFs.Further, NFs did not have appreciable effect on the invasion and migration of MGC-803 cells., Conclusions: Our findings showed that FAP was overexpressed in CAFs of gastric carcinomas, and siRNA-mediated knock down of FAP significantly suppressed invasion and migration of MGC-803 cells. FAP may be an important regulator in the invasion and migration of gastric cancer and may provide a novel therapeutic target in gastric carcinomas.

The spatial distribution characteristics of Fe and Mn contents in soils of nine different vegetation communities, located in the new-born marshes of the northern Yellow River estuary, were studied in May 2009. The results showed that the horizontal distributions of Fe and Mn contents showed an increasing tendency from Sparganiaceae-Potentilla supina marsh to bare flat. The vertical distribution characteristics of Fe and Mn contents in different marsh soils fluctuated significantly with the vegetation succession. The soil parent materials determined the Fe, Mn contents in the new-born marshes, and seawater, vegetations and soil fine particle also had important influences on their contents. Further analysis showed that Fe contents had significant positive correlation with Mn contents (P < 0.01). Fe, Mn contents also showed significant correlations with silt, clay, TN, NO3(-) -N and organic matter (P < 0.05), indicating that Fe and Mn had close relationships with nitrogen, and the contents of soil fine particles and organic matter were the dominant factors affecting the distribution of Fe and Mn in soils. In addition, the Fe contents ranged from 16.49 g x kg(-1) to 33.11 g x kg(-1) and the average was 22.54 g x kg(-1), which was close to the Fe contents in the tidal marshes of north Jiangsu, the Loess Plateau and the China soil background value, but slightly lower than those in the marshes of the Yangtse River estuary, the mangrove swamps and inland lake wetland. β-Ionone is an end ring analog of β-carotenoid which has been shown to possess potent anti-proliferative activity both in vitro and in vivo. To investigate the possible inhibitory effects of β-ionone, we studied cell growth characteristics, DNA synthesis, cell cycle progression, as well as mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) pathways in the human gastric adenocarcinoma cancer cell line (SGC-7901). Our results show that cell growth and DNA synthesis were inhibited, and the cell cycle was arrested at the G0/G1 phase in a dose-dependent manner in cells treated with β-ionone (25, 50, 100 and 200 μmol/L) for 24 h. We found that the β-ionone significantly decreased the extracellular signal-regulated kinase protein expression and significantly increased the levels of p38 and Jun-amino-terminal kinase protein expression (P < 0.01). β-Ionone also inhibited cell cycle-related proteins of Cdk4, Cyclin B1, D1 and increased p27 protein expression in SGC-7901 cells. These results suggested that the cell cycle arrest observed may be regulated through a MAPK pathway by transcriptional down-regulation of cell cycle proteins. These results demonstrate potent ability of β-ionone to arrest cell cycle of SGC-7901 cells and decrease proliferation.

In a generic model of excitable media, we simulate wave emission from a heterogeneity (WEH) induced by an electric field. Based on the WEH effect, a rotating electric field is proposed to terminate existed spatiotemporal turbulence. Compared with the effects resulted by a periodic pulsed electric field, the rotating electric field displays several improvements, such as lower required intensity, emitting waves on smaller obstacles, and shorter suppression time. Furthermore, due to rotation of the electric field, it can automatically source waves from the boundary of an obstacle with small curvature.

Stress is a potent modulator of the mammalian brain. The highly conserved stress hormone response influences many brain regions, particularly the hippocampus, a region important for memory function. The effect of acute stress on the unique population of adult neural stem/progenitor cells (NPCs) that resides in the adult hippocampus is unclear. We found that acute stress increased hippocampal cell proliferation and astrocytic fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) expression. The effect of acute stress occurred independent of basolateral amygdala neural input and was mimicked by treating isolated NPCs with conditioned media from corticosterone-treated primary astrocytes. Neutralization of FGF2 revealed that astrocyte-secreted FGF2 mediated stress-hormone-induced NPC proliferation. 2 weeks, but not 2 days, after acute stress, rats also showed enhanced fear extinction memory coincident with enhanced activation of newborn neurons. β-ionone has been shown to hold potent anti-proliferative and apoptosis induction properties in vitro and in vivo. To investigate the effects of β-ionone on apoptosis initiation and its possible mechanisms of action, we qualified cell apoptosis, proteins related to apoptosis and a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-AKT pathway in human gastric adenocarcinoma cancer SGC-7901 cells. The results demonstrated that β-ionone-induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner in SGC-7901 cells treated with β-ionone (25, 50, 100 and 200 μmol/L) for 24 h. β-ionone was also shown to induce the expression of cleaved-caspase-3 and inhibit bcl-2 expression in SGC-7901 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The significantly decreased levels of p-PI3K and p-AKT expression were observed in SGC-7901 cells after β-ionone treatments in a time- and dose-dependent manner (P < 0.01). Thus, the apoptosis induction in SGC-7901 cells by β-ionone may be regulated through a PI3K-AKT pathway. These results demonstrate a potential mechanism by which β-ionone to induce apoptosis initiation in SGC-7901 cells.

Aims: Interface zone fibroblasts (INFs) are very important in the progression and metastasis of tumours but their effect on the invasion and migration of gastric cancer cells is still unclear., Methods: Primary fibroblasts were isolated from the distal normal zone (normal zone fibroblasts, NFs), interface zone (INFs) and tumour zone (cancer-associated fibroblasts, CAFs) of 60 human gastric carcinoma tissue samples. The crosstalk between these fibroblasts and human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells was evaluated using an indirect co-culture model in vitro., Results: A high level of fibroblast activation protein (FAP) in the invasion front of gastric cancer was found in the gastric cancer tissue samples and no FAP expression was found in 20 normal gastric tissue samples by immunohistochemistry. High FAP expression was associated with Lauren classification, degree of differentiation, tumour node metastasis stage and depth of tumour invasion (p<0.05 or p<0.01). INFs promoted invasion and migration of MGC-803 cells. The number of invasions in INFs, CAFs and NFs were 120.10±27.53 (95% CI 102.12 to 138.10), 63.00±14.80 (95% CI 53.33 to 72.67) and 14.22±6.20 (95% CI 10.17 to 18.27), respectively; the number of invasions in INFs were 8.45-fold and 1.89-fold higher than those in NFs and CAFs, respectively (p<0.05). The number of migrations in INFs, CAFs and NFs were 118.00±16.83 (95% CI 107.00 to 129.00), 61.00±16.36 (95% CI 50.31 to 71.69) and 24.00±11.52 (95% CI 16.47 to 31.53), respectively; the number of migration in INFs were 4.91-fold and 1.92-fold higher than those in NFs and CAFs, respectively (p<0.05). INFs also significantly promoted cell proliferation and inhibited apoptosis in MGC-803 cells compared with NFs and CAFs (p<0.05)., Conclusions: These findings indicate that INFs exhibit a more robust biological modulatory activity than CAFs and NFs. INFs may be a key factor leading to tumour progression and metastasis and may be of use as a tool for post-treatment surveillance.

In the present paper, B3LYP (Becke's three-parameter hybrid method with the Lee, Yang, and Parr gradient corrected correlation functional) and HF (Hartree-Fock) methods at 6-31+G* * (C, H, N, O)/LANL2DZ(Ag) level were used to optimize molecular configurations of thymine. Base on the optimized structure, the normal Raman spectrum (NRS) of thymine and the surface-enhanced Raman spectrum (SERS) of thymine adsorbed on Ag and Ag2 were calculated, which were compared with the experimental values. The calculation results indicated that the result of the DFT for NRS was more approximate to the ever reported experimental date than those of HF results. A better conformity of SERS was found between the HF computed and the experimental results. At the end, detailed analysis of the Raman spectrum and more comprehensive assignments of the vibration mode for thymine were studied by the software of GaussView.

Objective: To search for a simple surgical procedure for the treatment of concealed penis that may have better effect and less complications., Methods: We used a modified surgical method in the treatment of 58 patients with concealed penis aged from 3 to 15 (mean 6.8) years. The operation was simplified and involved the following steps: wholly unveiling the penis glans, half-degloving the foreskins, cutting off all the adhesive fibers up to the penile suspensory ligaments, and liberating the external penis., Results: The operation was successful in all the patients, with the operative time of 15 -45 (mean 33) minutes, hospital stay of 2 - 5 (mean 3.5) days, but no complications except mild foreskin edema in 5 cases. The external penis was prolonged from 0.5 - 2.8 (mean 1.4) cm preoperatively to 3.2 - 8.5 (mean 3.9) cm postoperatively. The patients were followed up for 1 -3 years, all satisfied with the length and appearance of the penis, and their sexual and reproductive functions were normal., Conclusion: The modified surgical procedure for concealed penis is simple and effective, with desirable outcomes, few postoperative complications and no damage to sexual and reproductive functions.

Impaired regulation of emotional memory is a feature of several affective disorders, including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Such regulation occurs, in part, by interactions between the hippocampus and the basolateral amygdala (BLA). Recent studies have indicated that within the adult hippocampus, newborn neurons may contribute to support emotional memory, and that regulation of hippocampal neurogenesis is implicated in depressive disorders. How emotional information affects newborn neurons in adults is not clear. Given the role of the BLA in hippocampus-dependent emotional memory, we investigated whether hippocampal neurogenesis was sensitive to emotional stimuli from the BLA. We show that BLA lesions suppress adult neurogenesis, while lesions of the central nucleus of the amygdala do not. Similarly, we show that reducing BLA activity through viral vector-mediated overexpression of an outwardly rectifying potassium channel suppresses neurogenesis. We also show that BLA lesions prevent selective activation of immature newborn neurons in response to a fear-conditioning task. These results demonstrate that BLA activity regulates adult hippocampal neurogenesis and the fear context-specific activation of newborn neurons. Together, these findings denote functional implications for proliferation and recruitment of new neurons into emotional memory circuits.

An analytical formula was proposed recently to predict the accurate P-branch spectral lines of rovibrational transitions for diatomic systems by taking multiple spectral differences. A similar analytical expression was suggested here to predict the Q-branch spectral lines of rovibrational transitions. This formula was applied to study the high-lying Q-branch emission spectra of the (4,1) and (3,1) bands of the A 1Π - X1 Σ+ system of IrN molecule using fifteen known accurate experimental transition data. The results show that not only the known experimental transition lines were reproduced but also the correct values of the unknown spectral lines were predicted.
