15. Semi-analytical method for solving stresses in slope under general loading conditions

Abstract

Assessing the stress distribution within the slope in geotechnical engineering is critical. Despite the widely available numerical methods, no analytical solutions are available for determining the stress distribution within a slope under general loading conditions. This study presents a method of analytically approximating elastic stresses within a slope of arbitrary inclination subject to general surcharges and supporting forces. The prototype model of this problem is equivalent to a superposition of two sub-models: a half-plane body subjected to an initial earth stress field as well as surcharges on the crest (Model I) and a slope loaded by the release stresses caused by excavation, together with supporting forces on its inclined surface and bottom (Model II). The former stresses can be calculated analytically using Flamant’s solution, and the latter stresses can be further thought of as being composed of two additional components: one in an infinite plane with a half-infinite hole loaded by virtual tractions upon hole’s boundary (Model II1), which can be analytically approximated, and the other in a half-plane subjected to virtual tractions along the ground surface (Model II2), which can be calculated analytically as well. The two sets of virtual tractions that lead to stresses in Model II are calculated using an iterative process. The current approach provides analytical approximations of elastic stress solutions for slopes that are sufficiently close to the exact ones as accurate as much. A case study demonstrates that such solutions are in good agreement with those of the finite-element method’s over the entire region, the stresses within the region up to 10−11 times the slope’s height away from the slope toe can also be accurately determined using the current method. With this method, contour plots of stresses within a slope inclined at various angles are presented, which can be applied directly in practical engineering.

Abstract

Hydrogenase occupy a central place in the energy metabolism of anaerobic bacteria. Although the structure of mitochondrial complex I is similar to that of hydrogenase, whether it has hydrogen metabolic activity remain unclear. Here, we show that a H2 evolving activity exists in higher plants mitochondria and is closely related to complex I, especially around ubiquinone binding site. The H2 production could be inhibited by rotenone and ubiquinone. Hypoxia could simultaneously promote H2 evolution and succinate accumulation. Redox properties of quinone pool, adjusted by NADH or succinate according to oxygen concentration, acts as a valve to control the flow of protons and electrons and the production of H2. The coupling of H2 evolving activity of mitochondrial complex I with metabolic regulation reveals a more effective redox homeostasis regulation mechanism. Considering the ubiquity of mitochondria in eukaryotes, H2 metabolism might be the innate function of higher organisms. This may serve to explain, at least in part, the broad physiological effects of H2.

An acrylic acid-modified epoxy phosphate resin coating was synthesized by a four-step method marked "A-B-C-D", and it was used as an efficient protective layer for steel structures. Abstract

Acetaminophen (APAP)-induced acute kidney injury (APAP-AKI) has turned into one of reasons for clinic obtained renal insufficiency. Magnesium hydride (MgH2), as a solid-state hydrogen source, might be potentially applied in clinical practice. The current study aimed to investigate the protective effect of MgH2 against APAP-AKI. The results showed that MgH2 improved renal function and histological injury in mice of APAP-AKI. MgH2 also had protective effects on APAP-induced cytotoxicity in HK-2 cells. In addition, the increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expressions of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) and pro-apoptotic factors (Bad, Bax, Caspase3, and CytC) induced by APAP were downregulated with MgH2 treatment. Furthermore, the expressions of molecules related to TXNIP/NLRP3/NF-κB pathway (TXNIP, NLRP3, NF-κB p65 and p-NF-κB p65) in renal tissues and HK-2 cells were enhanced by APAP overdose, which were reduced by MgH2 administration. Collectively, this study indicated that MgH2 protects against APAP-AKI by alleviating oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis via inhibition of TXNIP/NLRP3/NF-κB signaling pathway. Abstract

Hydrogen is a simple, colorless, and biologically active small molecule gas that can react with reactive oxygen species. Recent research suggests that hydrogen possesses several biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects, while exhibiting an extremely high level of safety. Hydrogen application has shown promise in treating a range of acute and chronic diseases, both benign and malignant. Importantly, an increasing number of clinical studies on hydrogen have demonstrated its efficacy and safety in treating various diseases. This review highlights the beneficial effects of hydrogen in kidney diseases, summarizes potential mechanisms by which hydrogen may act in these diseases, and proposes several promising avenues for future research.
