24. An Autonomous Mechanical Maxwell's Demon

Abstract

Szilard proposes three engine models in 1929 to resolve several paradoxes arising from Maxwell's Demon[1,2]. We analyze Szilard's second demon models[1,2]. We show that the second one, apparently employs distinct molecular species and semi?permeable membranes. On this basis, we propose a fourth model of Szilard's engines. The mechanism of this model is based on Raoult's law and Van't Hoff's law in colligative properties of aqueous solutions, coupling the evaporating process of water molecules with the reverse osmosis process of water molecules, forms a spontaneous thermodynamic cycle composed.We find:(i) The cycle can proceed spontaneously in a gravitational field, without the need for an external force to do its work;(ii) The continuous flow of water molecules in the cycle, like the continuous current in a superconducting ring, can continue for a long time, but it is not a perpetual motion machine and does not violate the second law of thermodynamics;(iii) The cycle is capable of doing what Maxwell's Demon does, it is capable of producing a temperature difference in a single hot bath heated at temperature equilibrium. (iv) Its transitory functioning as an engine that converts disorganized heat energy to work is governed by the Onsager reciprocal relations. Taken together, this Szilard's fourth model is a new self-consistent, non-equilibrium thermodynamic cycle that provides a new theoretical model for understanding that quasi-perpetual motion processes and autonomous mechanical Maxwell's Demon do exist in nature.

Abstract

Three-dimensional macroporous reduced graphene oxide–Fe3O4 nanocomposites (3D macroporous rGO–Fe3O4 nanocomposites) were synthesized through electrostatic self-assembly method. The morphology and structure characteristics of 3D macroporous rGO–Fe3O4 nanocomposites were studied in detail. Then 3D macroporous rGO–Fe3O4 nanocomposites were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. The effects of contact time and solution pH on the adsorption properties of 3D macroporous rGO–Fe3O4 nanocomposites were also investigated. Due to the hierarchical porous structure, high surface area and large pore volume, 3D macroporous rGO–Fe3O4 nanocomposite adsorbents exhibited excellent adsorption capability and rapid adsorption rates for Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The kinetic and isothermal studies suggested that the adsorption process could be best described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. Moreover, the adsorbents could be separated easily by an external magnetic field for reusability, demonstrating great potential for the treatment of wastewater containing Cr(VI) during practical applications.

Abstract

Series-end winding motor drive (SWMD) is a novel motor drive with both high dc voltage utilization and zero-axis current control capability, which can replace the role of open-end winding motor drive in different types of ac machines. Three-phase SWMD has advantages of wide speed range, low-cost, high-density, and is easy for multiphase expansion. However, due to the complex vector selection process, the corresponding SVPWM method is computationally complex, especially for the multiphase application. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to propose a generalized carrier-based pulse width modulation method, which serves as the foundation for multiphase expansion of SWMD. By finding a general expression between the leg voltage and the phase voltage in the synchronous rotating framework, the proposed method can generate any desired phase voltage in a multiphase SWMD, whether it is sinusoidal or nonsinusoidal.
