We have grown single crystals of PrMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$, an ideal triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures. The main results are as follows: (i) The temperature-dependent susceptibility shows a negligible in-plane response and the isothermal magnetization curves confirm the easy axis along the $c$ axis. (ii) The specific heat measurements reveal the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 60 mK, and the power-law temperature dependence indicates the existence of the gapless magnetic excitations in system. (iii) The ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity exhibits negligibly small residual term ($\kappa_0/T$) and strong spin-phonon scattering effect, suggesting that the spin excitations are also involved. Our results further demonstrate that PrMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$ is a rare quantum spin liquid candidate with Ising-like anisotropy., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Identifying the elusive spinon excitations in quantum spin liquid (QSL) materials is what scientists have long sought for. Recently, thermal conductivity ($\kappa$) has emerged to be a decisive probe because the fermionic nature of spinons leads to a characteristic nonzero linear $\kappa_0/T$ term while approaching zero Kelvin. So far, only a few systems have been reported to exhibit such term. Here, we report a $\kappa_0/T \approx$ 0.01 WK$^{-2}$m$^{-1}$, the largest $\kappa_0/T$ value ever observed in magnetic oxide QSL candidates, in a new quantum magnet Pr$_2$Ga$_2$BeO$_7$ with a Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL). Its QSL nature is further supported by the power-law temperature dependence of the specific heat, a plateau of muon spin relaxation rate, and gapless inelastic neutron spectra. We report a study on the specific heat and heat transport of Tb$_2$Ti$_{2-x}$Zr$_x$O$_7$ ($x =$ 0, 0.02, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4) single crystals at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. The magnetic specific heat can be described by the Schottky contribution from the crystal-electric-field (CEF) levels of Tb$^{3+}$, with introducing Gaussian distributions of the energy split of the ground-state doublet and the gap between the ground state and first excited level. These crystals has an extremely low phonon thermal conductivity in a broad temperature range that can be attributed to the scattering by the magnetic excitations, which are mainly associated with the CEF levels. There is strong magnetic field dependence of thermal conductivity, which is more likely related to the field-induced changes of phonon scattering by the CEF levels than magnetic transitions or spin excitations. For magnetic field along the [111] direction, there is large thermal Hall conductivity at low temperatures which displays a broad peak around 8 T. At high fields up to 14 T, the thermal Hall conductivity decreases to zero, which supports its origin from either the spinon transport or the phonon skew scattering by CEF levels. We report an in-plane thermal transport study of the honeycomb Kitaev material Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ at subKelvin temperatures. In zero field, the $\kappa(T)$ displays a rather weak $T$-dependence but has a non-zero residual term $\kappa_0/T$, indicating strong phonon scattering by magnetic excitation and the possibility of itinerant spinon-like excitations coexisting with an antiferromagnetic order below 27 K. We propose the zero-field ground state is a novel fractionalized antiferromagnetic (AF*) state with both magnetic order and fractionalized excitations. With both the heat current and external field along the $a*$ (Co-Co bond) direction, the $\kappa_{a*}$ exhibits two sharp minima at 7.5 T and 10 T, and its value at 8.5 T is almost the same as the pure phononic transport for the high-field polarized state. This confirms the phase boundaries of the reported field-induced intermediate state and suggest its gapless continuum excitations possibly transport heat. No such intermediate phase was found in the $\kappa_a$ for the current and field along the $a$ (zigzag chain) direction. Finally, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ displays a strongly anisotropic magneto-thermal conductivity since the in-plane (out-of-plane) field strongly enhances (suppresses) the $\kappa_{a*}$ and $\kappa_a$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We study the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity and thermal conductivity of intermetallic HoAgGe single crystals at low temperatures and in magnetic fields along the $a$ and $c$ axis, while the electric and heat currents are along the $c$ axis. The magnetization curves show a series of metamagnetic transitions and small hysteresis at low field for $B \parallel a$, and a weak metamagnetic transition for $B \parallel c$, respectively. Both the magnetic susceptibility and $\rho(T)$ curve show anomalies at the antiferromagnetic transition ($T\rm_N \sim$ 11.3 K) and spin reorientation transition ($\sim$ 7 K). In zero field and at very low temperatures, the electrons are found to be the main heat carriers. For $B \parallel a$, the $\rho(B)$ curves display large and positive transverse magnetoresistance (MR) with extraordinary field dependence between $B^2$ and $B$-linear, accompanied with anomalies at the metamagnetic transitions and low-field hysteresis; meanwhile, the $\kappa(B)$ mainly decrease with increasing field and display some anomalies at the metamagnetic transitions. For $B \parallel c$, there is weak and negative longitudinal MR while the $\kappa(B)$ show rather strong field dependence, indicating the role of phonon heat transport., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

$S$ = 1/2 Ising kagome antiferromagnets (KAFs) are rare in reality. In this work, we report the magnetic ground state and field-induced transitions of an $S$ = 1/2 Ising antiferromagnet with a stacked kagome geometry, Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$. Upon cooling, magnetic susceptibility measurement reveals three successive magnetic transitions at $T_1$ = 45.2 K, $T_2$ = 35.4 K, and $T_3 \sim$ 20 K. When the magnetic field is applied along the Ising $c$ axis, a strikingly anomalous initial magnetization lying outside the hysteresis loop is observed below $T_3$. Through the detailed characterizations, the magnetic field $vs$ temperature phase diagram is established. A partially disordered antiferromagnetic state is proposed below $T_1$, which becomes frozen below $T_3$. Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$ is therefore a promising candidate for $S$ = 1/2 Ising KAFs, and this unique composite structure may shed light on the exploratory path for $S$ = 1/2 Ising KAFs., Comment: 9 pages, 9 pictures, to be published in PRB

The thermal Hall effect, defined as a heat current response transversal to an applied temperature gradient, is a central experimental probe of exotic electrically insulating phases of matter. A key question is how the interplay between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom gives rise to a nonzero thermal Hall conductivity (THC). Here, we present evidence for an intrinsic thermal Hall effect in the Heisenberg-Kitaev antiferromagnet and spin-liquid candidate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ brought about by the quantum-geometric Berry curvature of so-called magnon polarons, resulting from magnon-phonon hybridization. At low temperatures, our field- and temperature-dependent measurements show a negative THC for magnetic fields below 10 T and a sign change to positive THC above. Theoretically, the sign and the order of magnitude of the THC cannot be solely explained with magnetic excitations. We demonstrate that, by incorporating spin-lattice coupling into our theoretical calculations, the Berry curvature of magnon polarons counteracts the purely magnonic contribution, reverses the overall sign of the THC, and increases its magnitude, which significantly improves agreement with experimental data. A recent focus of quantum spin liquid (QSL) studies is how disorder/randomness in a QSL candidate affects its true magnetic ground state. The ultimate question is whether the QSL survives disorder or the disorder leads to a "spin-liquid-like" state, such as the proposed random-singlet (RS) state. Since disorder is a standard feature of most QSL candidates, this question represents a major challenge for QSL candidates. YbMgGaO$_4$, a triangular lattice antiferromagnet with effective spin-1/2 Yb$^{3+}$ ions, is an ideal system to address this question, since it shows no long-range magnetic ordering with Mg/Ga site disorder. Despite the intensive study, it remains unresolved as to whether YbMgGaO$_4$ is a QSL or in the RS state. Here, through ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity and magnetic torque measurements, plus specific heat and DC magnetization data, we observed a residual $\kappa_0/T$ term and series of quantum spin state transitions in the zero temperature limit for YbMgGaO$_4$. These observations strongly suggest that a QSL state with itinerant excitations and quantum spin fluctuations survives disorder in YbMgGaO$_4$., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures

We have grown single crystals of Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$, a new spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet (ETLAF), and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at ultralow temperatures. The main results are (i) at zero magnetic field, Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$ exhibits a magnetic ordering at 430 mK with a weak ferromagnetic moment along the $c$ axis. This suggests a canted 120$^\circ$ spin structure, which is in a plane including the crystallographic $c$ axis due to the existence of an easy-axis anisotropy and ferromagnetically stacked along the $c$ axis; (ii) with increasing field along the $c$ axis, a 1/3 magnetization plateau is observed which means the canted 120$^\circ$ spin structure is transformed to a up up down (UUD) spin structure. With even higher fields, the UUD phase further evolves to possible V and V' phases; (iii) with increasing field along the $a$ axis, the canted 120$^\circ$ spin structure is possibly transformed to a umbrella phase and a V phase. Therefore, Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$ is a rare example of spin-1 ETLAF with single crystalline form to exhibit easy-axis spin anisotropy and series of quantum spin state transitions., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Quantum fluctuations in the effective spin one-half layered structure triangular-lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$ lift the classical degeneracy of the antiferromagnetic ground state in magnetic field, producing a series of novel spin structures for magnetic fields applied within the crystallographic ab plane. Theoretically unresolved, however, are the effects of interlayer antferromagnetic coupling and transverse magnetic fields on the ground states of this system. To address these issues, we have used specific heat, neutron diffraction, thermal conductivity, and magnetic torque measurements to map out the phase diagram as a function of magnetic field intensity and orientation relative to the crystallographic ab plane. For H parallel to the ab plane, we have discovered an additional, previously unreported magnetic-field-induced phase transition at low temperature and an unexpected tetracritical point in the high field phase diagram, which - coupled with the apparent second-order nature of the phase transitions - eliminates several theoretically proposed spin structures for the high field phases. Our calorimetric measurements as a function of magnetic field orientation are in general agreement with theory for field-orientation angles close to plane parallel but diverge at angles near plane perpendicular; a predicted convergence of two phase boundaries at finite angle and a corresponding change in the order of the field induced phase transition is not observed experimentally. Our results emphasize the role of interlayer coupling in selecting and stabilizing field-induced phases, provide new guidance into the nature of the magnetic order in each phase, and reveal the need for new physics to account for the nature of magnetic ordering in this archetypal 2D spin one-half triangular lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. The most fascinating feature of certain two-dimensional (2D) gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) is that their spinon excitations behave like the fermionic carriers of a paramagnetic metal. The spinon Fermi surface is then expected to produce a linear increase of the thermal conductivity with temperature that should manifest via a residual value ($\kappa_0/T$) in the zero-temperature limit. However, this linear in T behavior has been reported for very few QSL candidates. Here, we studied the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity of an effective spin-1/2 triangular QSL candidate Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, which has an antiferromagnetic order at very low temperature ($T_N \sim$ 148 mK), and observed a finite $\kappa_0/T$ extrapolated from the data above $T_N$. Moreover, while approaching zero temperature, it exhibits series of quantum spin state transitions with applied field along the $c$ axis. These observations indicate that Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ possibly behaves as a gapless QSL with itinerant spin excitations above $T_N$ and its strong quantum spin fluctuations persist below $T_N$., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, with Supplementary Information

Kagom\'{e}-staircase compound Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ is an attractive multiferroic material exhibiting rich phase diagrams. However, the magnetic properties and magnetic transitions have been studied only above 1.3 K. In this work, we study the thermal conductivity ($\kappa$) of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ single crystals at low temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. In zero field, the magnetic transitions from the low-temperature incommensurate (LTI) phase to the commensurate phase (C) and then to a second commensurate phase (C') yield anomalies in $\kappa(T)$ curves at $T\rm_{LC}$ = 3.7 K and $T\rm_{CC'}$ = 2.0 K, respectively, which indicates a significant phonon scattering by the critical spin fluctuations. When the field is applied along the $a$ axis, the field dependence of $\kappa$ displays four anomalies associated with different magnetic transitions and reveals an undetected magnetic state at subKelvin temperatures. In addition, the $\kappa(B)$ curves are found to depend not only on the history but also on the magnitude of applying field. We report a study of thermal conductivity and resistivity at ultra-low temperatures and in high magnetic fields for semi-metal materials TaAs$_2$ and NbAs$_2$ by using single crystal samples. The thermal conductivity is strongly suppressed in magnetic fields, having good correspondence with the large positive magnetoresistance, which indicates a dominant electronic contribution to thermal conductivity. In addition, not only the resistivity but also the thermal conductivity display clear quantum oscillations behavior at subKelvin temperatures and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The most striking phenomenon is that the thermal conductivity show a $T^4$ behavior at very low temperatures, while the resistivity show a $T$-independent behavior. Magnetism of Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br single crystals based on a triangular lattice is studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, pulsed-field magnetization, and specific heat measurements. There are two inequivalent Cu$^{2+}$ sites in an asymmetric unit. Both Cu$^{2+}$ sublattices undergo a long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at $T\rm_N$ = 9.3 K. Upon cooling, an anisotropy crossover from Heisenberg to $XY$ behavior is observed below 7.5 K from the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic field applied within the $XY$ plane induces a spin-flop transition of Cu$^{2+}$ ions between 4.9 T and 5.3 T. With further increasing fields, the magnetic moment is gradually increased but is only about half of the saturation of a Cu$^{2+}$ ion even in 30 T. The individual reorientation of the inequivalent Cu$^{2+}$ spins under field is proposed to account for the magnetization behavior. The observed spin-flop transition is likely related to one Cu site, and the AFM coupling among the rest Cu spins is so strong that the 30-T field cannot overcome the anisotropy. The temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat, which is well described by a sum of two gapped AFM contributions, is a further support for the proposed scenario., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Magnetism of the $S$ = 1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the spatially anisotropic square lattice has been scarcely explored. Here we report a study of the magnetism, specific heat, and thermal conductivity on Ni[SC(NH$_2$)$_2$]$_6$Br$_2$ (DHN) single crystals. Ni$^{2+}$ ions feature an $S$ = 1 rectangular lattice in the $bc$ plane, which can be viewed as an unfrustrated spatially anisotropic square lattice. A long-range antiferromagnetic order is developed at $T \rm_N =$ 2.23 K. Below $T\rm_N$, an upturn is observed in the $b$-axis magnetic susceptibility and the resultant minimum might be an indication for the $XY$ anisotropy in the ordered state. A gapped spin-wave dispersion is confirmed from the temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat. We report detailed dc and ac magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements on the frustrated magnet ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$. At low temperatures, with increasing magnetic field, this spinel material goes through a series of spin state transitions from the helix spin state to the spiral spin state and then to the fully polarized state. Our results indicate a direct quantum phase transition from the spiral spin state to the fully polarized state. As the system approaches the quantum criticality, we find strong quantum fluctuations of the spins with the behaviors such as an unconventional $T^2$-dependent specific heat and temperature independent mean free path for the thermal transport. We complete the full phase diagram of ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$ under the external magnetic field and propose the possibility of frustrated quantum criticality with extended densities of critical modes to account for the unusual low-energy excitations in the vicinity of the criticality. We report a study of magnetism and magnetic transitions of hexagonal ErMnO$_3$ single crystals by magnetization, specific heat and heat transport measurements. Magnetization data show that the $c$-axis magnetic field induces three magnetic transitions at 0.8, 12 and 28 T. The specific heat shows a peak at 2.2 K, which is due to a magnetic transition of Er$^{3+}$ moments. For low-$T$ thermal conductivity ($\kappa$), a clear dip-like feature appears in $\kappa(H)$ isotherm at 1--1.25 T for $H \parallel ab$; while in the case of $H \parallel c$, a step-like increase is observed at 0.5--0.8 T. The transition fields in $\kappa(H)$ are in good agreement with those obtained from magnetization, and the anomaly of $\kappa$ can be understood by a spin-phonon scattering scenario. We present measurements on a series of materials, Li$_2$In$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$Mo$_3$O$_8$, that can be described as a 1/6th-filled breathing kagome lattice. Substituting Sc for In generates chemical pressure which alters the breathing parameter non-monotonically. $\mu$SR experiments show that this chemical pressure tunes the system from antiferromagnetic long range order to a quantum spin liquid phase. A strong correlation with the breathing parameter implies that it is the dominant parameter controlling the level of magnetic frustration, with increased kagome symmetry generating the quantum spin liquid phase. Magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest that this is related to distinct types of charge order induced by changes in lattice symmetry, in line with the theory of Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. B 93, 245134 (2016)]. The specific heat for samples at intermediate Sc concentration and with minimal breathing parameter, show consistency with the predicted $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We report a systematic study of the structure, electric and magnetic properties of Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_x$O$_6$ single crystals with $x =$ 0.72 and 0.26. The DC and AC magnetic susceptibilities display anomalies with characteristic of the spin freezing. The crystals show ferroelectric transition at 40 K and 35 K ($T_{FE}$) for $x =$ 0.72 and 0.26, respectively, with a large value of 1400 $\mu$C/m$^2$ at 8 K for electric polarization ($P_c$) along the spin-chain ($c$-axis) direction. Interestingly, the electric polarization perpendicular to the chain direction ($P_{ab}$) can also be detected and has value of 450 and 500 $\mu$C/m$^2$ at 8 K for the $x =$ 0.72 and 0.26 samples, respectively. The specific heat and magnetic susceptibility show no anomaly around $T_{FE}$, which means that the electric polarization of these samples has no direct relationship with the magnetism. The X-ray diffraction and the Raman spectroscopy indicate that these samples may undergo Jahn-Teller distortions that could be the reason of electric polarization., Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We report a study on the thermal conductivity of CuFe$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_2$ ($x =$ 0--0.12) single crystals at temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. CuFeO$_2$ is a well-known geometrically frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet and can be made to display multiferroicity either by applying magnetic field along the $c$ axis or by doping nonmagnetic impurities, accompanied with rich behaviors of magnetic phase transitions. The main experimental findings of this work are: (i) the thermal conductivities ($\kappa_a$ and $\kappa_c$) show drastic anomalies at temperature- or field-induced magnetic transitions; (ii) the low-$T$ $\kappa(H)$ isotherms exhibit irreversibility in a broad region of magnetic fields; (iii) there are phonon scattering effect caused by magnetic fluctuations at very low temperatures. These results demonstrate strong spin-phonon coupling in this material and reveal the non-negligible magnetic fluctuations in the "ground state" of pure and Ga-doped samples., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The perovskite Ba8CoNb6O24 comprises equilateral effective spin-1/2 Co2+ triangular layers separated by six non-magnetic layers. Susceptibility, specific heat and neutron scattering measurements combined with high-temperature series expansions and spin-wave calculations confirm that Ba8CoNb6O24 is basically a twodimensional (2D) magnet with no detectable spin anisotropy and no long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.06 K. In other words, Ba8CoNb6O24 is very close to be a realization of the paradigmatic spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model, which is not expected to exhibit symmetry breaking at finite temperature according to the Mermin and Wagner theorem., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures with SI

We report a heat switch effect in single crystals of an antiferromagnet Co$_3$V$_2$O$_8$, that is, the thermal conductivity ($\kappa$) can be changed with magnetic field in an extremely large scale. Due to successive magnetic phase transitions at 12--6 K, the zero-field $\kappa(T)$ displays a deep minimum at 6.7 K and rather small magnitude at low temperatures. Both the temperature and field dependencies of $\kappa$ demonstrate that the phonons are strongly scattered at the regime of magnetic phase transitions. Magnetic field can suppress magnetic scattering effect and significantly recover the phonon thermal conductivity. In particular, a 14 T field along the $a$ axis increases the $\kappa$ at 7.5 K up to 100 times. For $H \parallel c$, the magnitude of $\kappa$ can be suppressed down to $\sim$ 8% at some field-induced transition and can be enhanced up to 20 times at 14 T. Thermal conductivity (\kappa) of a distorted spin diamond-chain system, Cu_3(CO_3)_2(OH)_2, is studied at low temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. In zero field, the \kappa(T) curve with heat current along the chain direction has very small magnitudes and shows a pronounced three-peak structure. The magnetic fields along and perpendicular to the chains change the \kappa strongly in a way having good correspondence to the changes of magnetic specific heat in fields. The data analysis based on the Debye model for phononic thermal conductivity indicates that the heat transport is due to phonons and the three-peak structure is caused by two resonant scattering processes by the magnetic excitations. We study the low-temperature thermal conductivity (\kappa) of Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and Yb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystals in magnetic fields up to 14 T along the [111], [100] and [110] directions. The main experimental findings for Dy_2Ti_2O_7 are: (i) the low-T \kappa(H) isotherms exhibit not only the step-like decreases at the low-field (< 2 T) magnetic transitions but also obvious field dependencies in high fields (> 7 T); (ii) at T \le 0.5 K, the \kappa(H) curves show anisotropic irreversibility in low fields, that is, the \kappa(H) hysteresis locates at the first-order transition with H \parallel [100] and [110], while it locates between two successive transitions with H \parallel [111]; (iii) the \kappa in the hysteresis loops for H \parallel [100] and [110] show an extremely slow relaxation with the time constant of \sim 1000 min. The main experimental findings for Yb_2Ti_2O_7 are: (i) the zero-field \kappa(T) show a kink-like decrease at the first-order transition (\sim 200 mK) with decreasing temperature; (ii) the low-T \kappa(H) isotherms show a decrease in low field and a large enhancement in high fields; (iii) the low-T \kappa(H) curves show a sharp minimum at 0.5 T for H \parallel [110] and [111]. The heat transport of the spin-gapped material (CH_3)_2CHNH_3CuCl_3 (IPA-CuCl_3), a candidate quantum magnet with Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), is studied at ultra-low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. Due to the presence of the spin gap, the zero-field thermal conductivity (\kappa) is purely phononic and shows a ballistic behavior at T < 1 K. When the gap is closed by magnetic field at H = H_{c1}, where a long-range antiferromanetic (AF) order of Cu^{2+} moments is developed, the magnons contribute significantly to heat transport and exhibit a ballistic T^3 behavior at T < 600 mK. In addition, the low-T \kappa(H) isotherms show sharp peaks at H_{c1}, which indicates a gap re-opening in the AF state (H > H_{c1}) and demonstrates limited applicability of the BEC model to IPA-CuCl_3., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We report a study of the Ce doping effect on the thermal conductivity (\kappa) of Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} (NCCO) at low temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. It is found that with Ce doping, the electronic thermal conductivity increases; at the same time, the a-axis field induced changes in \kappa(H), associated with the spin flop and spin polarization of Nd^{3+} sublattice, and the spin flop of Cu^{2+} sublattice, gradually disappear. These are clearly due to the electron doping and the destruction of the antiferromagnetic orders. In the superconducting NCCO with x = 0.14 and 0.18, although the electronic thermal conductivity shows sizable field dependencies with H // c, the paramagnetic scattering of phonons is still playing the dominant role in the heat transport, which is different from many other cuprates. In the lightly doped samples (x = 0.03 and 0.06), the low-T \kappa(H) isotherms with H // c show a step-like anomaly and is likely related to the spin/charge stripes., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Low-temperature thermal conductivity (\kappa), as well as magnetization (M) and electric polarization (P), of multiferroic orthoferrite DyFeO_3 single crystals are studied with H \parallel c. When the crystal is cooled in zero field, M, P, and \kappa all consistently exhibit irreversible magnetic-field dependencies. In particular, with 500 mK < T \le 2 K, all these properties show two transitions at the first run of increasing field but only the higher-field transition is present in the subsequent field sweepings. Moreover, the ultra-low-T (T < 500 mK) \kappa(H) shows a different irreversibility and there is only one transition when the field is swept both up and down. All the results indicate a complex low-T H-T phase diagram involving successive magnetic phase transitions of the Fe^{3+} spins. We report a systematic study on the low-temperature thermal conductivity (\kappa) of R_2Ti_2O_7 (R = Gd and Er) single crystals with different directions of magnetic field and heat current. It is found that the magnetic excitations mainly act as phonon scatterers rather than heat carriers, although these two materials have long-range magnetic orders at low temperatures. The low-T \kappa(H) isotherms of both compounds show rather complicated behaviors and have good correspondences with the magnetic transitions, where the \kappa(H) curves show drastic dip- or step-like changes. In comparison, the field dependencies of \kappa are more complicated in Gd_2Ti_2O_7, due to the complexity of its low-T phase diagram and field-induced magnetic transitions. The bulk single crystals of of low-dimensional magnet (CH$_3$)$_2$NH$_2$CuCl$_3$ (DMACuCl$_3$ or MCCL) are grown by a slow evaporation method with different kinds of solvents, different degrees of super-saturation of solution and different temperatures of solution, respectively. Among three kinds of solvent, methanol, alcohol and water, alcohol is found to be the best one for growing MCCL crystals because of its structural similarity to the raw materials and suitable evaporation rate. The best growth temperature is in the vicinity of 35 $^{\circ}$C. The problem of the crystals deliquescing in air has been solved through recrystallization process. We report a study on the crystal growth of the hexagonal manganites $R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Lu, Ho, Er, and Tm) by using an optical floating-zone method. It was found that high-quality single crystals of $R$ = Y, Lu, and Ho could be easily grown with essentially the same conditions as those reported in literature, that is, with an atmosphere of normal pressure Ar and oxygen mixture and a growth rate of 2--4 mm/h. However, these conditions were not feasible for growing good crystals of $R$ = Er and Tm. The chemical analysis indicated that it was due to an off-stoichiometric phenomenon in the formed single crystals. We used an effective and simple way to resolve this problem by adjusting the nominal compositions of the polycrystal feed rods to be 1--$2\%$ rare-earth excess. We report a systematic study on the crystal growth of the rare-earth titanates $R_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ ($R$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Yb and Lu) and Y-doped Tb$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ ($x$ = 0.2 and 1) using an optical floating-zone method. High-quality single crystals were successfully obtained and the growth conditions were carefully optimized. The oxygen pressure was found to be the most important parameter and the appropriate ones are 0.1--0.4 MPa, depending on the radius of rare-earth ions. The growth rate is another parameter and was found to be 2.5--4 mm/h for different rare-earth ions. X-ray diffraction data demonstrated the good crystallinity of these crystals. The bulk single crystals of $S = 1$ chain compound Ni(C$_3$H$_{10}$N$_2$)$_2$NO$_2$ClO$_4$ are grown by using a slow evaporation method at a constant temperature and a slow cooling method. It is found that the optimum condition of growing large crystals is via slow evaporation at 25 $^\circ$C using 0.015 mol Ni(ClO$_4$)$_2$$\cdot$6H$_2$O, 0.015 mol NaNO$_2$, and 0.03 mol 1,3-propanediamine liquid dissolved into 30 ml aqueous solvent. High-quality crystals with size up to $18 \times 7.5 \times 5$ mm$^3$ are obtained. The single crystals are characterized by measurements of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity. The susceptibilities along three crystallographic axes are found to exhibit broad peaks at $\sim 55$ K, and then decrease abruptly to zero at lower temperatures, which is characteristic of a Haldane chain system. The specific heat and the thermal conductivity along the $c$ axis can be attributed to the simple phononic contribution and are analyzed using the Debye approximation., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, published in Journal of Crystal Growth

We study the heat transport of S = 1/2 chain compound CuCl_2$\cdot$2((CH_3)_2SO) along the b axis (vertical to the chain direction) at very low temperatures. The zero-field thermal conductivity (\kappa) shows a distinct kink at about 0.9 K, which is related to the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) transition. With applying magnetic field along the c axis, \kappa(H) curves also show distinct changes at the phase boundaries between the AF and the high-field disordered states. We report a study on the thermal conductivity (\kappa) of Tb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystals at low temperatures. It is found that in zero field this material has an extremely low phonon thermal conductivity in a broad temperature range. The mean free path of phonons is even smaller than that of amorphous materials and is 3--4 orders of magnitude smaller than the sample size at 0.3 K. The strong spin fluctuation of the spin-liquid state is discussed to be the reason of the strong phonon scattering. The magnetic-field dependence of \kappa and comparison with Y_2Ti_2O_7 and TbYTi_2O_7 confirm the magnetic origin of this phonon-glass-like behavior., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We study the low-temperature thermal conductivity (\kappa) of Dy_2Ti_2O_7 along and perpendicular to the (111) plane and under the magnetic field along the [111] direction. Besides the step-like decreases of \kappa at the field-induced transitions from the spin-ice state to the kagom\'e-ice state and then to the polarized state, an abnormal phenomenon is that the \kappa(H) isotherms show a clear irreversibility at very low temperatures upon sweeping magnetic field up and down. This phenomenon surprisingly has no correspondence with the well-known magnetization hysteresis. We report a study on the heat transport of an S = 1 Haldane chain compound Ni(C_3H_{10}N_2)_2NO_2ClO_4 at low temperatures and in magnetic fields. The zero-field thermal conductivities show a remarkable anisotropy for the heat current along the spin-chain direction (\kappa_b) and the vertical direction (\kappa_c), implying a magnetic contribution to the heat transport along the spin-chain direction. The magnetic-field-induced change of the spin spectrum has obviously opposite impacts on \kappa_b and \kappa_c. In particular, \kappa_b(H) and \kappa_c(H) curves show peak-like increases and dip-like decreases, respectively, at \sim 9 T, which is the critical field that minimizes the spin gap. We study the low-temperature heat transport, as well as the magnetization and the specific heat, of TmMnO_3 single crystals to probe the transitions of magnetic structure induced by magnetic field. It is found that the low-T thermal conductivity (\kappa) shows strong magnetic-field dependence and the overall behaviors can be understood in the scenario of magnetic scattering on phonons. In addition, a strong "dip"-like feature shows up in \kappa(H) isotherms at 3.5--4 T for H \parallel c, which is related to a known spin re-orientation of Mn^{3+} moments. The absence of this phenomenon for H \parallel a indicates that the magnetic-structure transition of TmMnO_3 cannot be driven by the in-plane field. In comparison, the magnetothermal conductivity of TmMnO_3 is much larger than that of YMnO_3 but smaller than that of HoMnO_3, indicating that the magnetisms of rare-earth ions are playing the key role in the spin-phonon coupling of the hexagonal manganites., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. By means of ac magnetic-susceptibility measurements, we find evidence for a new magnetic phase of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ below about 140 mK in zero magnetic field. In magnetic fields parallel to [111], this phase---exhibiting frequency- and amplitude-dependent susceptibility and an extremely slow spin dynamics---extends to about 70 mT, at which it gives way to another phase. The field dependence of the susceptibility of this second phase, which extends to about 0.6 T, indicates the presence of a weak magnetization plateau below 50 mK, as has been predicted by a single-tetrahedron four-spin model, giving support to the underlying proposal that the disordered low-field ground state of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is a quantum spin ice., Comment: Accepted by Physical Review Letters

We study the low-temperature heat transport of Nd_3Ga_5SiO_{14}, which is a spin-liquid candidate, to probe the nature of ground state and the effect of magnetic field on the magnetic properties. The thermal conductivity (\kappa) shows a purely phononic transport in zero field. The external magnetic field along the c axis induces a dip-like behavior of \kappa(H), which can be attributed to a simple paramagnetic scattering on phonons. However, the magnetic field along the ab plane induces another step-like decrease of \kappa. This kind of \kappa(H) behavior is discussed to be related to a field-induced partial order, which yields low-energy magnetic excitations that significantly scatter phonons. These results point to a paramagnetic ground state that partial magnetic order can be induced by magnetic field along the ab plane, which is also signified by the low-T specific heat data., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The very-low-temperature thermal conductivity (\kappa) is studied for BaCo_2V_2O_8, a quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet exhibiting an unusual magnetic-field-induced order-to-disorder transition. The nearly isotropic transport in the longitudinal field indicates that the magnetic excitations scatter phonons rather than conduct heat. The field dependence of \kappa shows a sudden drop at \sim 4 T, where the system unndergoes the transition from the N\'eel order to the incommensurate state. Another dip at lower field of \sim 3 T indicates an unknown magnetic transition, which is likely due to the spin-flop transition. Moreover, the \kappa(H) in the transverse field shows a very deep valley-like feature, which moves slightly to higher field and becomes sharper upon lowering the temperature. This indicates a magnetic transition induced by the transverse field, which however is not predicted by the present theories for this low-dimensional spin system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We report a study of the low-temperature heat transport in the quasi-one-dimensional S = 1/2 alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic chain compound (CH_{3})_{2}NH_{2}CuCl_{3}. Both the temperature and magnetic-field dependencies of thermal conductivity are very complicated, pointing to the important role of spin excitations. It is found that magnetic excitations act mainly as the phonon scatterers in a broad temperature region from 0.3 to 30 K. In magnetic fields, the thermal conductivity show drastic changes, particularly at the field-induced transitions from the low-field N\'{e}el state to the spin-gapped state, the field-induced magnetic ordered state, and the spin polarized state.
