Abstract

Astronomical observation data require long-term preservation, and the rapid accumulation of observation data makes it necessary to consider the cost of long-term archive storage. In addition to low-speed disk-based online storage, optical disk or tape-based offline storage can be used to save costs. However, for astronomical research that requires historical data (particularly time-domain astronomy), the performance and energy consumption of data-accessing techniques cause problems because the requested data (which are organized according to observation time) may be located across multiple storage devices. In this study, we design and develop a tool referred to as AstroLayout to redistribute the observation data using spatial aggregation. The core algorithm uses graph partitioning to generate an optimized data placement according to the original observation data statistics and the target storage system. For the given observation data, AstroLayout can copy the long-term archive in the target storage system in accordance with this placement. An efficiency evaluation shows that AstroLayout can reduce the number of devices activated when responding to data-access requests in time-domain astronomy research. In addition to improving the performance of data-accessing techniques, AstroLayout can also reduce the storage systems power consumption. For enhanced adaptability, it supports storage systems of any media, including optical disks, tapes, and hard disks.

9. Discovery of Paradigm Dependencies

Abstract

Missing and incorrect values often cause serious consequences. To deal with these data quality problems, a class of common employed tools are dependency rules, such as Functional Dependencies (FDs), Conditional Functional Dependencies (CFDs) and Edition Rules (ERs), etc. The stronger expressing ability a dependency has, data with the better quality can be obtained. To the best of our knowledge, all previous dependencies treat each attribute value as a non-splittable whole. Actually however, in many applications, part of a value may contains meaningful information, indicating that more powerful dependency rules to handle data quality problems are possible. In this paper, we consider of discovering such type of dependencies in which the left hand side is part of a regular-expression-like paradigm, named Paradigm Dependencies (PDs). PDs tell that if a string matches the paradigm, element at the specified position can decides a certain other attribute's value. We propose a framework in which strings with similar coding rules and different lengths are clustered together and aligned vertically, from which PDs can be discovered directly. The aligning problem is the key component of this framework and is proved in NP-Complete. A greedy algorithm is introduced in which the clustering and aligning tasks can be accomplished simultaneously. Because of the greedy algorithm's high time complexity, several pruning strategies are proposed to reduce the running time. Abstract

There are errors in multi-source uncertain time series data. Truth discovery methods for time series data are effective in finding more accurate values, but some have limitations in their usability. To tackle this challenge, we propose a new and convenient truth discovery method to handle time series data. A more accurate sample is closer to the truth and, consequently, to other accurate samples. Because the mutual-confirm relationship between sensors is very similar to the mutual-quote relationship between web pages, we evaluate sensor reliability based on PageRank and then estimate the truth by sensor reliability. Therefore, this method does not rely on smoothness assumptions or prior knowledge of the data. Finally, we validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method on real-world and synthetic data sets, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. Learning multi-path CNN for mural deterioration detection

Abstract

Mural deterioration easily destroys valuable paintings and must be monitored frequently for preventive protection. Deterioration detection in mural images is often manually labeled and is a preprocessing step for mural protection and restoration. Many deterioration forms are commonly invisible with only one lighting condition because mural deterioration is caused by changes in the material and plaster layer. This study addresses mural deterioration detection through a multi-path convolutional neural network (CNN), which takes images of a scene with multiple lightings as inputs and generates a binary map that indicates deterioration regions. We design an eight-path CNN in which seven paths are utilized for basic feature extraction from lighted images, and the remaining path is responsible for cross feature fusion. This mechanism enables our method to not only identify suitable features for different lightings but also utilize these features collaboratively through cross feature fusion. Furthermore, we build two realistic mural deterioration datasets of real-world mural deterioration and briquettes that simulate the cave deterioration. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.
