Nonvolatile photonic integrated circuits employing phase change materials have relied either on optical switching mechanisms with precise multi-level control but poor scalability or electrical switching with seamless integration and scalability but mostly limited to a binary response. Recent works have demonstrated electrical multi-level switching; however, they relied on the stochastic nucleation process to achieve partial crystallization with low demonstrated repeatability and cyclability. Here, we re-engineer waveguide-integrated microheaters to achieve precise spatial control of the temperature profile (i.e., hotspot) and, thus, switch deterministic areas of an embedded phase change material cell. We experimentally demonstrate this concept using a variety of foundry-processed doped-silicon microheaters on a silicon-on-insulator platform to trigger multi-step amorphization and reversible switching of Sb$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Se$_{4}$Te alloys. We further characterize the response of our microheaters using Transient Thermoreflectance Imaging. Our approach combines the deterministic control resulting from a spatially resolved glassy-crystalline distribution with the scalability of electro-thermal switching devices, thus paving the way to reliable multi-level switching towards robust reprogrammable phase-change photonic devices for analog processing and computing., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Recently, evidence of superconductivity (SC) has been reported in pressurized La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. Here we study the possible pairing mechanism and pairing symmetry in this material. Through fitting the density-functional-theory band structure, we provide a six-orbital tight-binding model. In comparison with the band structure of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, the additional non-bonding $d_{z^2}$ band is importance to the pairing mechanism here. When the multi-orbital Hubbard interactions are included, our random-phase-approximation based study yields an $s^{\pm}$-wave pairing. The dominant FS nesting with nesting vector $\mathbf{Q}_1\approx (\pi,\pi)$ is between the $\gamma$-pocket contributed by the bonding $d_{z^2}$ band top and the $\alpha_1$-pocket contributed by the non-bonding $d_{z^2}$ band bottom, leading to the strongest pairing gap amplitude and opposite gap signs within the two regimes. The dominant real-space pairing is the interlayer pairing between the $d_{z^2}$ orbitals. We have also studied the doping dependence of the pairing symmetry and $T_c$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The tidal deformability and the radius of neutron stars are observables, which have been used to constrain the neutron star equation of state and explore the composition in neutron stars. We investigated the radius and tidal deformability of dark matter admixed neutron stars (DANSs) by utilizing the two-fluid TOV equations. Assuming that the dark matter modeled as ideal fermi gas or self-interacting bosons, for a series of DANSs at a fixed mass, it is shown that there exists the DANSs with smaller normal matter radii but larger tidal deformabilities. This negative correlation does not exist in the normal neutron stars.In other words, if the observation finds that the neutron stars with a fixed mass exists such a situation, that is, having a smaller observed radius but a larger tidal deformability, it will indicate the existence of dark matter in neutron stars.In addition, the relevant neutron star observations can also be used to constrain the dark matter parameters., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The observations of PSR J0952-0607 and the second object in GW190814 event indicate the possible existence of supermassive neutron stars. In this work, by using the Constant-Sound-Speed (CSS) parametrization to describe the equation of state (EOS) of quark matter, the constraints on the EOS parameters from supermassive hybrid stars are investigated through the Maxwell and Gibbs constructions. It is shown that to support a supermassive hybrid star, a lower transition energy density, a smaller energy density discontinuity and a higher sound speed of quark matter are favored. For the constructed hybrid star EOS model, the maximum mass of the corresponding hybrid stars will not meet the lower mass limit of the second object in GW190814 if the energy density discontinuity takes a value higher than $180~{\rm MeV~fm^{-3}}$. Moreover, it is confirmed that the supermassive neutron star observation can also rule out the existence of twin stars as a supermassive hybrid star requires a relatively small energy density discontinuity. Finally, we give a rough estimate of the lower limit of the dimensionless tidal deformability of neutron stars which ranges from 2 to 3., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Vehicle trajectory planning is a key component for an autonomous driving system. A practical system not only requires the component to compute a feasible trajectory, but also a comfortable one given certain comfort metrics. Nevertheless, computation efficiency is critical for the system to be deployed as a commercial product. In this paper, we present a novel trajectory planning algorithm based on nonlinear optimization. The algorithm computes a kinematically feasible and comfort-optimal trajectory that achieves collision avoidance with static obstacles. Furthermore, the algorithm is time efficient. It generates an 6-second trajectory within 10 milliseconds on an Intel i7 machine or 20 milliseconds on an Nvidia Drive Orin platform.

Bragg gratings offer high-performance filtering and routing of light on-chip through a periodic modulation of a waveguide's effective refractive index. Here, we model and experimentally demonstrate the use of Sb2Se3, a nonvolatile and transparent phase-change material, to tune the resonance conditions in two devices which leverage periodic Bragg gratings: a stopband filter and Fabry-Perot cavity. Through simulations, we show that similar refractive indices between silicon and amorphous Sb2Se3 can be used to induce broadband transparency, while the crystalline state can enhance the index contrast in these Bragg devices. Our experimental results show the promise and limitations of this design approach and highlight specific fabrication challenges which need to be addressed in future implementations.

The early detection of glaucoma is essential in preventing visual impairment. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to analyze color fundus photographs (CFPs) in a cost-effective manner, making glaucoma screening more accessible. While AI models for glaucoma screening from CFPs have shown promising results in laboratory settings, their performance decreases significantly in real-world scenarios due to the presence of out-of-distribution and low-quality images. To address this issue, we propose the Artificial Intelligence for Robust Glaucoma Screening (AIROGS) challenge. This challenge includes a large dataset of around 113,000 images from about 60,000 patients and 500 different screening centers, and encourages the development of algorithms that are robust to ungradable and unexpected input data. We evaluated solutions from 14 teams in this paper, and found that the best teams performed similarly to a set of 20 expert ophthalmologists and optometrists. The highest-scoring team achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.99 (95% CI: 0.98-0.99) for detecting ungradable images on-the-fly. Additionally, many of the algorithms showed robust performance when tested on three other publicly available datasets. Topological states of matter possess bulk electronic structures categorized by topological invariants and edge/surface states due to the bulk-boundary correspondence. Topological materials hold great potential in the development of dissipationless spintronics, information storage, and quantum computation, particularly if combined with magnetic order intrinsically or extrinsically. Here, we review the recent progress in the exploration of intrinsic magnetic topological materials, including but not limited to magnetic topological insulators, magnetic topological metals, and magnetic Weyl semimetals. We pay special attention to their characteristic band features such as the gap of topological surface state, gapped Dirac cone induced by magnetization (either bulk or surface), Weyl nodal point/line, and Fermi arc, as well as the exotic transport responses resulting from such band features. We conclude with a brief envision for experimental explorations of new physics or effects by incorporating other orders in intrinsic magnetic topological materials., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures

Implicit neural representations with multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) have recently gained prominence for a wide variety of tasks such as novel view synthesis and 3D object representation and rendering. However, a significant challenge with these representations is that both training and inference with an MLP over a large number of input coordinates to learn and represent an image, video, or 3D object, require large amounts of computation and incur long processing times. In this work, we aim to accelerate inference and training of coordinate-based MLPs for implicit neural representations by proposing a new split MLP architecture, CoordX. With CoordX, the initial layers are split to learn each dimension of the input coordinates separately. The intermediate features are then fused by the last layers to generate the learned signal at the corresponding coordinate point. This significantly reduces the amount of computation required and leads to large speedups in training and inference, while achieving similar accuracy as the baseline MLP. This approach thus aims at first learning functions that are a decomposition of the original signal and then fusing them to generate the learned signal. Our proposed architecture can be generally used for many implicit neural representation tasks with no additional memory overheads. We demonstrate a speedup of up to 2.92x compared to the baseline model for image, video, and 3D shape representation and rendering tasks.

The co-occurrence of phase transitions with local and global order parameters, such as the entangled magnetization and topological invariant, is attractive but has been seldom realized experimentally. Here, by using high-pressure in-situ X-ray diffraction, high-pressure electric transport measurements and high-pressure first-principles calculations, we report a magneto-topological phase transition, i.e., the phenomenon of magnetic materials undergoing different magnetic and topological phases during the process of pressure loading, in a recently discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2. By considering both out-of-plane ferromagnetic and in-plane anti-ferromagnetic components, the calculated results can well fit the experimental data. The calculation results furtherly reveal a pristine Weyl phase with four more pairs of Weyl nodes under low pressures, and a generally-defined Z2 topological insulator phase after the restoration of time-reversal symmetry. Remarkably, the present magneto-topological phase transition involves a pair of crossing bands of two spin channels becoming degenerate. Thus, all the chiral Weyl nodes annihilate with their counterparts from another spin channel, in contrast to the typical annihilation of Weyl pairs from the same bands in inversion-asymmetric systems. This paper presents a noval method that generates optimal trajectories for autonomous vehicles for in-lane driving scenarios. The method computes a trajectory using a two-phase optimization procedure. In the first phase, the optimization procedure generates a close-form driving guide line with differetiable curvatures. In the second phase, the procedure takes the driving guide line as input, and outputs dynamically feasible, jerk and time optimal trajectories for vehicles driving along the guide line. Path planning is a key component in motion planning for autonomous vehicles. A path specifies the geometrical shape that the vehicle will travel, thus, it is critical to safe and comfortable vehicle motions. For urban driving scenarios, autonomous vehicles need the ability to navigate in cluttered environment, e.g., roads partially blocked by a number of vehicles/obstacles on the sides. How to generate a kinematically feasible and smooth path, that can avoid collision in complex environment, makes path planning a challenging problem. Emergency vehicles in service have right-of-way over all other vehicles. Hence, all other vehicles are supposed to take proper actions to yield emergency vehicles with active sirens. As this task requires the cooperation between ears and eyes for human drivers, it also needs audio detection as a supplement to vision-based algorithms for fully autonomous driving vehicles. In urban driving scenarios, we need to know both the existence of emergency vehicles and their relative positions to us to decide the proper actions. We present a novel system from collecting the real-world siren data to the deployment of models using only two cost-efficient microphones. We are able to achieve promising performance for each task separately, especially within the crucial 10m to 50m distance range to react (the size of our ego vehicle is around 5m in length and 2m in width). The recall rate to determine the existence of sirens is 99.16% , the median and mean angle absolute error is 9.64{\deg} and 19.18{\deg} respectively, and the median and mean distance absolute error of 9.30m and 10.58m respectively within that range. We also benchmark various machine learning approaches that can determine the siren existence and sound source localization which includes direction and distance simultaneously within 50ms of latency.

Spin polarization effects in nonmagnetic materials are generally believed as an outcome of spin-orbit coupling provided that the global inversion symmetry is lacking, also known as 'spin-momentum locking'. The recently discovered hidden spin polarization indicates that specific atomic site asymmetry could also induce measurable spin polarization, leading to a paradigm shift to centrosymmetric crystals for potential spintronic applications. Here, combining spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we report distinct spin-layer locking phenomena surrounding different high-symmetry momenta in a centrosymmetric, layered material BiOI. The measured spin is highly polarized along the Brillouin zone boundary, while is almost vanishing around the zone center due to its nonsymmorphic crystal structure. Our work not only demonstrates the existence of hidden spin polarization, but also uncovers the microscopic mechanism of the way spin, momentum and layer locking to each other, shedding lights on the design metrics for future spintronic devices., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Topological magnets are a new family of quantum materials providing great potential to realize emergent phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion-insulator state. Here we present our discovery that stoichiometric ferromagnet MnBi8Te13 with natural heterostructure MnBi2Te4-(Bi2Te3)3 is an unprecedented half-magnetic topological insulator, with the magnetization existing at the MnBi2Te4 surface but not at the opposite surface terminated by triple Bi2Te3 layers. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements unveil a massive Dirac gap at the MnBi2Te4 surface, and gapless Dirac cone on the other side. Remarkably, the Dirac gap (~28 meV) at MnBi2Te4 surface decreases monotonically with increasing temperature and closes right at the Curie temperature, thereby representing the first smoking-gun spectroscopic evidence of magnetization-induced topological surface gap among all known magnetic topological materials. We further demonstrate theoretically that the half-magnetic topological insulator is desirable to realize the half-quantized surface anomalous Hall effect, which serves as a direct proof of the general concept of axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) can be induced by intrinsic mechanism due to the band Berry phase and extrinsic one arising from the impurity scattering. The recently discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2 exhibits a large intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and a giant anomalous Hall angle (AHA). The predicted energy dependence of the AHC in this material exhibits a plateau at 1000 {\Omega}-1 cm-1 and an energy width of 100 meV just below EF, thereby implying that the large intrinsic AHC will not significantly change against small-scale energy disturbances such as slight p-doping. Here, we successfully trigger the extrinsic contribution from alien-atom scattering in addition to the intrinsic one of the pristine material by introducing a small amount of Fe dopant to substitute Co in Co3Sn2S2. Our experimental results show that the AHC and AHA can be prominently enhanced up to 1850 {\Omega}-1 cm-1 and 33%, respectively, owing to the synergistic contributions from the intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms as distinguished by the TYJ model. In particular, the tuned AHA holds a record value in low fields among known magnetic materials. This study opens up a pathway to engineer giant AHE in magnetic Weyl semimetals, thereby potentially advancing the topological spintronics/Weyltronics., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figs

The topological surface states of magnetic topological systems, such as Weyl semimetals and axion insulators, are associated with unconventional transport properties such as nonzero or half-quantized surface anomalous Hall effect. Here we study the surface anomalous Hall effect and its spectral signatures in different magnetic topological phases using both model Hamiltonian and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that by tailoring the magnetization and interlayer electron hopping, a rich three-dimensional topological phase diagram can be established, including three types of topologically distinct insulating phases bridged by Weyl semimetals, and can be directly mapped to realistic materials such as MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n systems. Among them, we find that the surface anomalous Hall conductivity in the axion-insulator phase is a well-localized quantity either saturated at or oscillating around e2/2h, depending on the magnetic homogeneity. We also discuss the resultant chiral hinge modes embedded inside the side surface bands as the potential experimental signatures for transport measurements. Realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion electrodynamics in topological materials are among the paradigmatic phenomena in condensed matter physics. Recently, signatures of both phases are observed to exist in thin films of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, a stoichiometric antiferromagnetic topological insulator. Direct evidence of the bulk topological magnetoelectric response in an axion insulator requires an energy gap at its topological surface state (TSS). However, independent spectroscopic experiments revealed that such a surface gap is absent, or much smaller than previously thought, in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Here, we utilize angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to demonstrate that a sizable TSS gap unexpectedly exists in Sb-doped MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. This gap is found to be topologically nontrivial, insensitive to the bulk antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition, while enlarges along with increasing Sb concentration. Our work shows that Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_4$ is a potential platform to observe the key features of the high-temperature axion insulator state, such as the topological magnetoelectric responses and half-integer quantum Hall effects., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is an antiferromagnetic topological insulator which stimulates intense interests due to the exotic quantum phenomena and promising device applications. Surface structure is a determinant factor to understand the novel magnetic and topological behavior of MnBi2Te4, yet its precise atomic structure remains elusive. Here, we discovered a spontaneous surface collapse and reconstruction in few-layer MnBi2Te4 exfoliated under delicate protection. Instead of the ideal septuple-layer structure in the bulk, the collapsed surface is shown to reconstruct as Mn-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ quintuple-layer and Mn$_x$Bi$_y$Te double-layer with a clear van der Waals gap in between. Combining with first-principles calculations, such spontaneous surface collapse is attributed to the abundant intrinsic Mn-Bi antisite defects and tellurium vacancy in the exfoliated surface, which is further supported by in-situ annealing and electron irradiation experiments. Our results shed light on the understanding of the intricate surface-bulk correspondence of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, and provide insightful perspective of the surface-related quantum measurements in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ few-layer devices., Comment: Main text: 30 pages, 5 figures. Topological materials are expected to show distinct transport signatures due to their unique band-inversion character and band-crossing points. However, the intentional modulation of such topological responses by experimentally feasible means is less explored. Here, an unusual elevation of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is obtained in electron(Ni)-doped magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3-xNixSn2S2, showing peak values of anomalous Hall-conductivity, Hall-angle and Hall-factor at a relatively low doping level of x = 0.11. The separation of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to total AHE using TYJ scaling model indicates that such significant enhancement is dominated by the intrinsic mechanism of electronic Berry curvature. Theoretical calculations reveal that compared with the Fermi-level shifting from electron filling, a usually overlooked effect of doping, i.e., local disorder, imposes a striking effect on broadening the bands and narrowing the inverted gap, and thus results in an elevation of the integrated Berry curvature. Our results not only realize the enhancement of AHE in a magnetic Weyl semimetal, but also provide a practical design principle to modulate the bands and transport properties in topological materials, by exploiting the disorder effect of doping.

The recent discovered intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 have been met with unusual success in hosting emergent phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the axion insulator states. However, the surface-bulk correspondence of the Mn-Bi-Te family, composed by the superlattice-like MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)n (n = 0, 1, 2, 3 ...) layered structure, remains intriguing but elusive. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) techniques, we unambiguously assign the two distinct surface states of MnBi4Te7 (n = 1) to the quintuple-layer (QL) Bi2Te3 termination and the septuple-layer (SL) MnBi2Te4 termination, respectively. A comparison of the experimental observations with theoretical calculations reveals the diverging topological behaviors, especially the hybridization effect between magnetic and nonmagnetic layers, on the two terminations: a gap on the QL termination originating from the topological surface states of the QL hybridizing with the bands of the beneath SL, and a gapless Dirac-cone band structure on the SL termination with time-reversal symmetry. The quasi-particle interference patterns further confirm the topological nature of the surface states for both terminations, continuing far above the Fermi energy. The QL termination carries a spin-helical Dirac state with hexagonal warping, while at the SL termination, a strongly canted helical state from the surface lies between a pair of Rashba-split states from its neighboring layer. Our work elucidates an unprecedented hybridization effect between the building blocks of the topological surface states, and also reveals the termination-dependent time-reversal symmetry breaking in a magnetic topological insulator, rendering an ideal platform to realize the half-integer quantum Hall effect and relevant quantum phenomena., Comment: 22 Pages, 4 Figures

The search for materials to support the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect (QAHE) have recently centered on intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) including MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ or heterostructures made up of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$. While MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is itself a MTI, most recent ARPES experiments indicate that the surface states on this material lack the mass gap that is expected from the magnetism-induced time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), with the absence of this mass gap likely due to surface magnetic disorder. Here, utilizing small-spot ARPES scanned across the surfaces of MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, we show the presence of large mass gaps (~ 100 meV scale) on both of these materials when the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ surfaces are buried below one layer of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ that apparently protects the magnetic order, but not when the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ surfaces are exposed at the surface or are buried below two Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. This makes both MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ excellent candidates for supporting the QAHE, especially if bulk devices can be fabricated with a single continuous Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layer at the surface., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Accurately forecasting the future movements of surrounding vehicles is essential for safe and efficient operations of autonomous driving cars. This task is difficult because a vehicle's moving trajectory is greatly determined by its driver's intention, which is often hard to estimate. By leveraging attention mechanisms along with long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, this work learns the relation between a driver's intention and the vehicle's changing positions relative to road infrastructures, and uses it to guide the prediction. Different from other state-of-the-art solutions, our work treats the on-road lanes as non-Euclidean structures, unfolds the vehicle's moving history to form a spatio-temporal graph, and uses methods from Graph Neural Networks to solve the problem. Not only is our approach a pioneering attempt in using non-Euclidean methods to process static environmental features around a predicted object, our model also outperforms other state-of-the-art models in several metrics. The recent discovered antiferromagnetic topological insulators in Mn-Bi-Te family with intrinsic magnetic ordering have rapidly drawn broad interest since its cleaved surface state is believed to be gapped, hosting the unprecedented axion states with half-integer quantum Hall effect. Here, however, we show unambiguously by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that a gapless Dirac cone at the (0001) surface of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exists between the bulk band gap. Such unexpected surface state remains unchanged across the bulk N\'eel temperature, and is even robust against severe surface degradation, indicating additional topological protection. Through symmetry analysis and $\textit{ab}$-$\textit{initio}$ calculations we consider different types of surface reconstruction of the magnetic moments as possible origins giving rise to such linear dispersion. Our results reveal that the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator hosts a rich platform to realize various topological phases such as topological crystalline insulator and time-reversal-preserved topological insulator, by tuning the magnetic configurations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. As one of paradigmatic phenomena in condensed matter physics, the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in stoichiometric Chern insulators has drawn great interest for years. By using model Hamiltonian analysis and first-principle calculations, we establish a topological phase diagram and map on it with different two-dimensional configurations, which is taken from the recently-grown magnetic topological insulators MnBi4Te7 and MnBi6Te10 with superlattice-like stacking patterns. These configurations manifest various topological phases, including quantum spin Hall effect with and without time-reversal symmetry, as well as QAHE. We then provide design principles to trigger QAHE by tuning experimentally accessible knobs, such as slab thickness and magnetization. Our work reveals that superlattice-like magnetic topological insulators with tunable exchange interaction serve as an ideal platform to realize the long-sought QAHE in pristine compounds, paving a new avenue within the area of topological materials., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Identification and control of topological phases in topological thin films offer great opportunity for fundamental research and the fabrication of topology-based devices. Here, combining molecular beam epitaxy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations, we investigate the electronic structure evolution in (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 films with thickness from 2 to 13 quintuple layers. We identify several phases with their characteristic topological nature and evolution between them, i.e., dimensional crossover from a three-dimensional topological insulator with gapless surface state to its two-dimensional counterpart with gapped surface state, and topological phase transition from topological insulator to a normal semiconductor with increasing In concentration x. Furthermore, by introducing In alloying as an external knob of band gap engineering, we experimentally demonstrated the trivial topological nature of Bi2Se3 thin films (below 6 quintuple layers) as two-dimensional gapped systems, in consistent with our theoretical calculations. Our results provide not only a comprehensive phase diagram of (Bi1-xInx)2Se3 and a route to control its phase evolution, but also a practical way to experimentally determine the topological properties of a gapped compound by topological phase transition and band gap engineering., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic topological insulators (TI) provide an important material platform to explore quantum phenomena such as quantized anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and Majorana modes, etc. Their successful material realization is thus essential for our fundamental understanding and potential technical revolutions. By realizing a bulk van der Waals material MnBi4Te7 with alternating septuple [MnBi2Te4] and quintuple [Bi2Te3] layers, we show that it is ferromagnetic in plane but antiferromagnetic along the c axis with an out-of-plane saturation field of ~ 0.22 T at 2 K. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations further demonstrate that MnBi4Te7 is a Z2 antiferromagnetic TI with two types of surface states associated with the [MnBi2Te4] or [Bi2Te3] termination, respectively. Additionally, its superlattice nature may make various heterostructures of [MnBi2Te4] and [Bi2Te3] layers possible by exfoliation. It is recently noted that in certain centrosymmetric compounds, spin-orbit interaction couples each local sector that lacks inversion symmetry and thus leads to visible spin polarization effects in the real space, dubbed as 'hidden spin polarization (HSP)'. However, observable spin polarization of a given local sector suffers interference by its inversion partner, impeding material realization and potential applications of HSP. Starting from a single-orbital tight-binding model, we propose a nontrivial way to protect strong sector-projected spin texture through minimizing the interaction between inversion partners by nonsymmorphic symmetry. The HSP effect is generally compensated by inversion partners near the {\Gamma} point but immune from interaction around the boundary of the Brillouin zone. We further summarize 17 layer groups that support such symmetry-assisted HSP and identify by first-principle calculations hundreds of quasi-2D materials from the existing databases, among which a group of rare-earth compounds LnOI (Ln = Pr, Nd, Ho, Tm and Lu) serves as great candidates showing strong Rashba- and Dresselhaus-type HSP. Our finding also provides an ideal platform to control HSP for emergent physical effects, such as opening a hybridization gap by tensile strain to realize the time-reversal-invariant topological superconductivity., Comment: 16 pages, 1 table, 3 figures
