Electrochemical water splitting is a promising technique for the production of high‐purity hydrogen. Substituting the slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction with an oxidation reaction that is thermodynamically more favorable enables the energy‐efficient production of hydrogen. Moreover, this approach facilitates the degradation of environmental pollutants and synthesis of value‐added chemicals through the rational selection of small molecules as substrates. Strategies for small‐molecule selection and electrocatalyst design are critical to electrocatalytic performance, with a focus on achieving a high current density, selectivity, Faradaic efficiency, and operational durability. This perspective discusses the key factors required for further advancement, including technoeconomic analysis, new reactor system design, meeting the requirements of industrial applications, bridging the gap between fundamental research and practical applications, and product detection and separation. Perovskite oxides, particularly double perovskite oxides, have drawn significant research interest within the fields of solid‐state chemistry and materials science. As a quintessential double perovskite oxide, Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6‐δ (SFM) has unique electronic, magnetic, and catalytic properties. These attributes make it a promising candidate for energy conversion and storage applications. This review offers a comprehensive overview of advancements using SFM across various applications, including solid oxide cells, protonic ceramic cells, and electrocatalysis. Notably, the review highlights emerging optimization strategies that enhance functionality based on a fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms. The review concludes by discussing the persistent challenges facing SFM‐based functional materials, as well as their prospects, considering both fundamental research and industrial applications. In this work, experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that different types of Cu wires significantly change the adsorption properties of reactant molecules and the benzyl alcohol oxidation reaction performance. In particular, CuO nanowires in situ grown on Cu foam exhibit the best performance with a low potential of 1.39 V at a current density of 200 mA cm−2, high selectivity to benzoic acid production, and good operational stability. Electrochemical water splitting represents a promising technology for green hydrogen production. To design advanced electrocatalysts, it is crucial to identify their active sites and interpret the relationship between their structures and performance. Materials extensively studied as electrocatalysts include noble‐metal‐based (e.g., Ru, Ir, and Pt) and non‐noble‐metal‐based (e.g., 3d transition metals) compounds. Recently, advancements in characterization techniques and theoretical calculations have revealed novel and unusual active sites. The present review highlights the latest achievements in the discovery and identification of various unconventional active sites for electrochemical water splitting, with a focus on state‐of‐the‐art strategies for determining true active sites and establishing structure–activity relationships. Furthermore, we discuss the remaining challenges and future perspectives for the development of next‐generation electrocatalysts with unusual active sites. By presenting a fresh perspective on the unconventional reaction sites involved in electrochemical water splitting, this review aims to provide valuable guidance for the future study of electrocatalysts in industrial applications.
