Abstract

Compared with portland cement, sulphoaluminate cement (SAC) is considered a low carbon emission and low energy consumption cement. To further reduce the cost of SAC and promote extensive engineering application, the hydration and hardened properties of SAC blended with different dosages (0%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight) of limestone were investigated over 360 days. Isothermal calorimeter, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) were used to determine the hydration rate, hydration products, micromorphology, and pore structure of the hardened cement paste. In addition, the mechanical strength and deformation of the mortars were monitored over 360 days. The results show that the addition of limestone has a negative effect on the hydration of SAC due to its large particle size. The compressive strength of the mortars with 0%–20% limestone exhibited a continuous increase within 360 days of curing, even though it decreased gradually as the limestone content increased from 0% to 20% due to the dilution effect. Moreover, all mortars exhibited excellent dimensional stability, and linear deformation over 360 days was less than 30 microstrain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Boosting Charge Transport and Catalytic Performance in MoS2by Zn2+Intercalation Engineering for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been widely studied as catalysts for lithium–sulfur batteries due to their good catalytic properties. However, their poor electronic conductivity leads to slow sulfur reduction reactions. Herein, a simple Zn2+intercalation strategy was proposed to promote the phase transition from semiconducting 2H-phase to metallic 1T-phase of MoS2. Furthermore, the Zn2+between layers can expand the interlayer spacing of MoS2and serve as a charge transfer bridge to promote longitudinal transport along the c-axis of electrons. DFT calculations further prove that Zn-MoS2possesses better charge transfer ability and stronger adsorption capacity. At the same time, Zn-MoS2exhibits excellent redox electrocatalytic performance for the conversion and decomposition of polysulfides. As expected, the lithium–sulfur battery using Zn0.12MoS2-carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as the cathode has high specific capacity (1325 mAh g–1at 0.1 C), excellent rate performance (698 mAh g–1at 3 C), and outstanding cycle performance (it remains 604 mAh g–1after 700 cycles with a decay rate of 0.045% per cycle). This study provides valuable insights for improving electrocatalytic performance of lithium–sulfur batteries.

Abstract

Fiber orientations are constrained by boundary effects (e.g. size effect), which play a significant role in the macroscopic rigidity of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC). However, how to quantify the size effect on the fiber orientation distribution functions (ODFs) remain to be open issues. In this work, a simple method to quantify the sectional-size impact on fiber ODFs is proposed. By disassembling the fiber rotatable range and fiber location on the cross-section into several small facets and points, respectively, we draw out the fiber ODFs with different sectional sizes through superposition. Then, the calculation method of the fiber orientation factor based on the ODF is proposed, and the framework of applying an ODF to calculate the stiffness matrix is given. Our results revealed the influence of the cross-section size on the elastic properties of FRC, which can provide a sound guidance for the design and optimization of fiber-based cement composites. 1. A practical method for discretizing the cross-section of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) into a point set is proposed. 2. A quantitative interplay between boundary constraints and size effects on fiber ODFs is developed. 3. The calculation framework of the fiber orientation factor and elastic modulus of the FRC based on the ODF is established. 4.
