Abstract

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like Pm60+142 ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7)s−1 for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7)s−1 for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

Abstract

International audience; Atomic masses of seven Tz=−1, fp-shell nuclei from V44 to Cu56 and two low-lying isomers, V44m (Jπ=6+) and Co52m (Jπ=2+), have been measured with relative precisions of 1–4×10−7 with isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) at the Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe), Lanzhou. The masses of Cu56, Co52g,52m, and V44m were measured for the first time in this experiment. The mass excesses (ME"s) of V44, Mn48, Fe50, and Ni54 are determined with an order of magnitude improved precision compared to the literature values. Co52g,52m and Cu56 are found to be 370 and 400 keV more bound, respectively, while V44g,44m are ∼300 keV less bound than the extrapolations in the Atomic-Mass Evaluation 2012 (AME"12). The masses of the four Tz=−1/2 nuclei V45, Cr47, Mn49, and Fe51 are re-determined to be in agreement, within the experimental errors, with the recent JYFLTRAP (University of Jyväskylä, Finland) measurements or with the previous IMS measurements in CSRe. Details of the measurements and data analysis are described, and the impact of the new ME values on different aspects in nuclear structure are investigated and discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Decay of the 8+ isomer in fully stripped ions Ru44+94 is observed during its circulation in the experimental Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). The Ru44+94 ions were produced via projectile fragmentation and stored in CSRe tuned into the isochronous ion-optical mode. The timing signals of the ions, passing through a time-of-flight detector, were consecutively registered and used to determine the variation of revolution time as a function of revolution number. A sudden change of the revolution time at a specific revolution was identified as a fingerprint of the Ru44+94 isomer decay. The isomeric half-life was deduced to be 102(17) μs, which agrees well with the theoretical expectation by blocking the internal conversion decay of the isomer. Our work proved the feasibility of studying decays of short-lived isomers in high atomic charge states using the isochronous mass spectrometry. In addition, Ru44+94m represents the shortest-lived nuclear state whose mass has ever been measured directly.
