The rise of childhood asthma has led to the need for UK schools to have an established procedure for monitoring medical needs and assessing the seriousness of an asthma attack. Over one million school aged children suffer from asthma in the UK in 1998. A survey of schools in Hillingdon, London found 73% had a written asthma policy and 80.8% of children with asthma had inhalers in the school building. Joint welfare guidelines suggest inhalers should be stored in close proximity to nursery and infant age children, but distributed by teachers.
