To examine the associations between physical activity (PA) levels and mental health in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (IDs) during the COVID-19 pandemic, 117 participants aged between 6 and 17 years with IDs from 10 Hong Kong special schools were included. There were positive dose--response associations between PA (i.e., light PA, moderate PA, and vigorous PA) and mental health, and participants with higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and self-concept (SC) had better social quality of life (QoL) than those with lower levels of MVPA and SC. Moreover, personal and environmental factors such as age, body mass index, school, sex, ID level, and parental education level influenced the PA levels and QoL in children and adolescents with IDs.

Purpose: This prospective cohort study investigated the impact of online and hybrid teaching of university-required physical education on students' physical literacy-related correlates. To avoid the widespread pandemic, the university decided to offer courses online through video conferencing or via a hybrid mode. When compared with face-to-face instruction, these formats may intensely affect students' physical literacy journey during early adulthood. Methods: A group of 1,738 students (42% males and 58% females) aged 18.52 (±1.29) responded to a three-phase online survey in various courses. Results: The structural equation modeling determined that motivation and physical activity levels were negatively related to physical competence and knowledge and understanding. Further repeated-measure analyses recognized the interaction effect of amotivation. Results indicated that participants in the online teaching mode may experience a learning predicament over those in the hybrid one. Conclusion: Practically, the physical literacy teaching strategies in nurturing motivation and physical competence should be reinforced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this article is to explore the influence of a customized continuing professional development (PE-CPD) programme on PE teachers' perceived physical literacy and efficacy beliefs in Hong Kong. Individual and focus group interviews were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of the participants' CPD experiences and to explore the programme's influence on their perceived physical literacy and efficacy beliefs. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interview data. Results revealed that all participants underwent certain immediate and intermediate changes in relation to their self-perceptions of physical literacy and teaching efficacy while completing the customised PE-CPD programme. It was concluded that stakeholders should address the importance of developing teachers' physical literacy and self-efficacy through similar programmes, in order to provide quality physical education (QPE) in school curricula and in turn enhance students' physical literacy.

This article argues that ancient Chinese Tao ("The Way") philosophy--which can be traced back more than two thousand years--can explain the essence and philosophy of physical literacy. The motivation, confidence, physical competence, and knowledge and understanding that are needed to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life are used as a framework to apply to Tao philosophy. This article intends to provide an Eastern perspective (the Taoist approach to physical literacy), open up dialogue for further clarification, and offer insight into a wider range of the contemporary perceptions of physical literacy.

Physical education teacher education is a time when preservice teachers can reinforce their physical literacy (PL). Professional coursework within the teacher preparation program should also develop their teaching efficacy. In this regard, the purpose of this study was to examine the predictive relationship between preservice physical education teachers' perceived PL and teaching efficacy. The findings revealed that the PL dimension of self-expression and communication with others was the most significant predictor of teaching efficacy in developing content knowledge, applying scientific knowledge to teaching, teaching students with special needs, and using technology. Furthermore, preservice teachers' knowledge and understanding of PL predicted their teaching efficacy in accommodating skill level differences within instruction. These predictive relationships suggest that preservice teachers' PL influences their efficacy to enact effective teaching behaviors and should remain an ongoing priority of physical education teacher preparation programming suggested by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Background: The holistic concept of physical literacy (PL) has gained growing attention in recent research, policy, and practice. Many important policy documents of the physical activity and educational fields (e.g., Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018–2030 by the World Health Organization, UNESCO's Quality Physical Education guidelines for policymakers) have specified PL. However, a clear framework for action is needed, as most initiatives across the world are fragmented, lack a prospective orientation, can benefit from conceptual clarification, and are not linked to effective translation into practice. Therefore, we aim to consensually develop a Global Physical Literacy (GloPL) Action Framework to define goals and principles (asking what is needed) as well as actions and ways (asking how these can be achieved) to move PL forward. Materials and methods: We apply a three-stage group Delphi technique involving three representation groups: (a) geographical representatives to achieve global coverage of perspectives; (b) representatives of special thematic interest reflecting prominent gaps of current PL activities; and (c) representatives of societies from the broad field of physical activity and health to facilitate dissemination. The process will begin with an individual pre-Delphi exercise, in which experts generate initial ideas for the framework, followed by a four-eye document analysis to derive themes for the discussion. Subsequently, the experts will meet face-to-face in three online rounds to discuss and prioritize the themes. Interspersed formal voting with pre-defined agreement thresholds (via descriptive statistics) will inform the inclusion of themes within the final framework. Conclusions: A global consensus on goals, principles, actions, and ways for the development of PL has the potential to provide a largely accepted roadmap for future activities in research, policy, and practice. The co-production approach will help disseminate the GloPL Action Framework and benefit work in relevant application fields of physical activity and health worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to examine the associations between perceived social support, perceived competence, and physical activity in children with physical and intellectual disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the third wave of the pandemic in Hong Kong (i.e., July through December 2020), 291 participants age 6–17 years from 27 special schools were included. After controlling for demographic variables, the total variance explained by perceived social support and perceived competence was 24%, F(2, 240) = 12.42, p <.001, with perceived competence having a stronger association with physical activity (β = 0.29, p <.001) than perceived social support (β = 0.07, p =.22). This study highlights two key facilitators for shaping physical activity involvement among children with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research has encouraged a cultural specific framework to be developed through research in Asian countries, such as China, to help internationalize the findings and help athletes to adapt them to their society and culture. Based on a socioecological framework, this study investigated how social-ecological determinants affect elite student athletes' (ESA) experience of the socialization process of dual career development in Hong Kong and Taiwan. We interviewed eight ESAs who trained at the national level, studying simultaneously at universities in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Grounded theory techniques and procedures were used to analyze the data. Results revealed that ESAs are affected by interrelated determinants at different levels: individual (career aims, identities, roles, characters, self-efficacy, and motivation), micro-level (coaches, teammates, parents, siblings, physical education [PE] teachers, other teachers, alumni, seniors, and classmates), meso-level (interrelations between individual and micro-level), exo-level (government, financial, policy, academic, medical, and parent-teacher association), macro-level (attitudes, norms, values, beliefs, resources, and culture), and chrono-level (transition).

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an Internet-based behavioral intervention for physical activity (PA) promotion among secondary school students. It was hypothesized that the Internet-based PA promotion program could increase the PA levels of secondary school students. The action research approach together with qualitative focus group interview was used. A total of 127 Form 4 (Grade 10) students from a Hong Kong Secondary School were recruited in the study. They were group-randomized by class and placed into two groups--the Internet-based group (IB) and the control group (C). Participants of the IB group received the online behavior change program entitled "let's exercise and be active daily" (LEAD) for PA promotion among secondary school students. The international physical activity questionnaire short last 7-day instrument was used to assess the PA levels of the participants. The stage of exercise change questionnaire was used to assess the stages of behavioral changes of the participants. The assessments were conducted at baseline and post intervention both after 1st cycle and 2nd cycle. The narrative approach of data analysis was selected in the focus group interview after two cycles of data collection. There was a trend for the participants of the IB group to participate in more PA at the 1st cycle and 2nd cycle assessments, but no statistically significant differences within the IB group or between the study groups were observed. Limitations and suggestions were made in the reflection of the overall study.

This study investigates the socialization and professional experiences of primary school physical education teachers (PSPETs) in the Asian context of Hong Kong. A qualitative research design is adopted. The researcher used semi-structured interviews, supplemented by documentary sources (diaries) for conducting data collection. Eleven PSPETs participated in this study. Data were analysed through open axial and selective coding. The concepts of organizational sensitivity, sources of satisfaction, dealing with influential persons or critical incidents, status of the profession, educational reform as a trend, and versatile roles are revealed in the theory of "Diversified Professionalism". The substantive theory thus contributes to an increased appreciation of the PSPETs' work and to the literature on physical education teachers' professionalization and professionalism.

This study investigates the career trajectory of primary school physical education teachers (PSPETs) in Hong Kong. It is focused on the problems arising from apparent overload and the multiple roles of physical education teachers' career development in Hong Kong brought about by education and curriculum reforms. The specific research question is, "What are PSPETs' career aims and how do they describe and conceptualize their career trajectories?" A qualitative research design is adopted to gain an in-depth understanding of the meaning that participants make of their career life. The researchers used semi-structured interviews, supplemented by documentary sources (diaries) for conducting data collection. Through purposive sampling methods (snowball sampling), 11 Hong Kong PSPETs participated in this study. Data were analyzed through three major types of coding, namely: open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The results revealed that PSPETs share both similarities and differences through their career development processes. The meaning and interpretation of "assimilation" varies among the PSPETs. Their capacity for assimilation acts as the core factor in exploring the PSPETs' career trajectories. The concepts of (a) characteristics of the organization, (b) self-orientation of career, (c) other obligations, and (d) career aspirations are clustered into the Assimilating (Career trajectory) category, which describes PSPETs' career aims and conceptualizations of their career trajectory. PSPETs have diversified in and adapted to all aspects of their career life within a continuing, evolving scenario of education reforms. The influences and relationships that they perceived were clearly implicated in their career choice and path. PSPETs in this study revealed that disadvantages can be overcome by adapting to the diverse nature of their job and by overcoming the otherwise limited scope of their work, meaning PSPETs can assimilate more closely into the culture and context of the organization. The present study investigated the associations between the three psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) derived from the Self‐determination Theory and well‐being [health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) and subjective well‐being (SWB)] among older people in Hong Kong SAR, China. A cross‐sectional study was conducted from May to August 2018 in Hong Kong. A total of 230 participants aged 60‐year‐old or above were recruited from eight community service centres. Results from adjusted regression analysis showed that, among the three psychological needs, competence and relatedness were positively associated with SWB, while relatedness was positively associated with physical health domain of HRQOL. The three psychological needs had no significant associations with mental health domain of HRQOL. Interventions to improve HRQOL and SWB should promote older people's sense of competence and relatedness. Longitudinal studies are warranted to clarify the causal relationships and look at other physical, mental and social health outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
