Metal plating industries generate wastewater containing heavy metals, necessitating effective treatment methods to mitigate environmental contamination. This study investigated the potential of banana peel-derived activated carbon (BPAC) and commercial activated carbon for heavy metal removal, addressing a pressing environmental concern. The analysis encompassed diverse pH levels, crucial for real-world applicability, offering valuable insights into adsorption capacities and kinetics. The results revealed competitive performance of both materials, with typical lead (Pb) removal ranging from 4 to 6 mg/g and cadmium (Cd) from 3 to 5 mg/g. Commercial activated carbon exhibited slightly superior adsorption kinetics and capacities, highlighting its efficacy in heavy metal removal. Throughout the study, optimizing dosage proved essential for maximizing removal efficiency, emphasizing the practical implications of this research. Furthermore, the time-dependent behavior of adsorption kinetics underscored the importance of extended contact times for enhanced removal. Generally, BPAC emerged as a promising solution for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewater. It consistently achieved removal efficiencies typically ranging from 75 % to more than 90 %, making it a viable alternative in the realm of wastewater treatment. At pH 4, BPAC demonstrated significantly higher adsorption capacity, with lead (Pb) at 5.50 ± 0.20 (mg/g) and cadmium (Cd) at 4.10 ± 0.15 (mg/g), compared to slightly lower values for commercial activated carbon, Pb at 5.20 ± 0.25 (mg/g) and Cd at 3.90 ± 0.20 (mg/g). This study contributes significantly to wastewater treatment methodologies, offering sustainable and efficient approaches to address heavy metal contamination in industrial effluents.

Looting is one of the biggest threats to archaeology and cultural heritage and archaeologists had been struggling with this problem for decades. Help to deal with this threat, we carried out an experiment in Wuhan / China and created our own artifical looting holes by digging two holes and shaping them in different measurements while collecting TerraSAR-X images from the experiment area. Our study aims creating simulated SAR images of looting holes, in the light of the information we obtained from our experiment. Parameters of collected SAR images and 3D models of the artificial holes will be foundation of the work with SAR simulation. Since field work is money and time consuming duty, simulating SAR images of looting hole is advantageous and benefitial since we can play with the 3D models and change their geometry. In this study we obtain SAR simulation images by using our 3D models of the looting holes. By using simulation, we are able to change the geometry of the hole and even possible to implement natural effects to the 3D model which is effective on results. Thus, assessment of the looting holes will become much more simple work and it will help to protection of cultural heritage.

Our experiment focuses on generating simulated high-resolution (HR) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the photogrammetric 3D model derived from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery. The goal is to match these simulated images with real SAR data of complex scenes containing vegetation, buildings, roads, and the construction of receiving antennas. Simulated SAR reflectivity map was based on ray tracing techniques.Two feature matching algorithms, namely Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) were employed for co-registration of the simulated to the real SAR images. The effectiveness of these algorithms is evaluated by their matching rates. The experiment results of the matching process highlight the superior performance of ORB over SIFT, attributed to its robustness against rotation variations and noise. ORB emerges as a versatile choice for high-resolution real and simulated SAR registration tasks.

Abstract In Kazakhstan, breast cancer (BC) remains the leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality among women. The presented case series aimsto summarize cardiovascular events that resulted in anthracycline-based chemotherapy discontinuation or suspension during the ongoing project on studying the cardiotoxicity effects. Case 1. Classic acute cardiotoxicity with asystole. Patient Sh., 46 years old, was admitted with a baseline LVEF of 64% and GLS of 22.4%. After the first dose of doxorubicin 60 mg/m2 and cyclophosphamide 600 mg/m2, the patient experienced two episodes of asystole. She was prescribed Trimetazidine at a dose of 80 mg. Eventually, Sh. completed the courses of anthracycline therapy after a 1-month delay at a cumulative dose of 455 mg/m2. Case 2. Subacute cardiotoxicity with ventricular extrasystole. Patient Zh., aged 47, developed single, paired, and group ventricular extrasystoles after the 2nd course of chemotherapy with doxorubicin 200 mg/m2 (23 days after admission). Carvedilol was prescribed at 25 mg twice daily and Trimetazidine at 80 mg once a day. After 1 month of monitoring, ventricular extrasystoles disappeared. With a month's delay, the patient completed chemotherapy at a cumulative dose of 400 mg/m2. Case 3. Severe cardiotoxicity due to pre-existing cardiovascular disease with discontinuation of chemotherapy. Patient M., aged 58, was referred to the very highrisk group for developed atrial fibrillation and heart failure with LVEF 51%. M. received Enalapril 5 mg two times per day, Bisoprolol 5 mg, Eplerenone 50 mg, Dapagliflozin 10 mg, and Dabigatran 150 mg twice daily. After 3 months, anthracycline therapy was canceled at a cumulative dose of 260 mg/m2 due to the deterioration of the patient’s condition (LVEF 41%.). Discontinuation or the delay of vitally needed chemotherapy in BC patients deteriorate their prognosis for survival. Patients should be constantly monitored during and after anticancer treatment.

ABSTRACTMatrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) could aid the diagnosis of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) owing to its affordability and high-throughput capacity. MALDI-TOF MS has been proposed for use on commonly available respiratory samples, without specialized sample preparation, making this technology especially attractive for implementation in low-resource regions. Here, we assessed the utility of MALDI-TOF MS in differentiating severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vs non-COVID acute respiratory infections (NCARIs) in a clinical lab setting in Kazakhstan. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from inpatients and outpatients with respiratory symptoms and from asymptomatic controls (ACs) in 2020–2022. PCR was used to differentiate SARS-CoV-2+ and NCARI cases. MALDI-TOF MS spectra were obtained for a total of 252 samples (115 SARS-CoV-2+, 98 NCARIs, and 39 ACs) without specialized sample preparation. In our first sub-analysis, we followed a published protocol for peak preprocessing and machine learning (ML), trained on publicly available spectra from South American SARS-CoV-2+ and NCARI samples. In our second sub-analysis, we trained ML models on a peak intensity matrix representative of both South American (SA) and Kazakhstan (Kaz) samples. Applying the established MALDI-TOF MS pipeline “as is” resulted in a high detection rate for SARS-CoV-2+ samples (91.0%), but low accuracy for NCARIs (48.0%) and ACs (67.0%) by the top-performing random forest model. After re-training of the ML algorithms on the SA-Kaz peak intensity matrix, the accuracy of detection by the top-performing support vector machine with radial basis function kernel model was at 88.0%, 95.0%, and 78% for the Kazakhstan SARS-CoV-2+, NCARI, and AC subjects, respectively, with a SARS-CoV-2 vs rest receiver operating characteristic area under the curve of 0.983 [0.958, 0.987]; a high differentiation accuracy was maintained for the South American SARS-CoV-2 and NCARIs. MALDI-TOF MS/ML is a feasible approach for the differentiation of ARI without specialized sample preparation. The implementation of MALDI-TOF MS/ML in a real clinical lab setting will necessitate continuous optimization to keep up with the rapidly evolving landscape of ARI.IMPORTANCEIn this proof-of-concept study, the authors used matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and machine learning (ML) to identify and distinguish acute respiratory infections (ARI) caused by SARS-CoV-2 versus other pathogens in low-resource clinical settings, without the need for specialized sample preparation. The ML models were trained on a varied collection of MALDI-TOF MS spectra from studies conducted in Kazakhstan and South America. Initially, the MALDI-TOF MS/ML pipeline, trained exclusively on South American samples, exhibited diminished effectiveness in recognizing non-SARS-CoV-2 infections from Kazakhstan. Incorporation of spectral signatures from Kazakhstan substantially increased the accuracy of detection. These results underscore the potential of employing MALDI-TOF MS/ML in resource-constrained settings to augment current approaches for detecting and differentiating ARI.

The primary data of micro- and macroplastics in the aquatic environment of Lake Markakol, located in the mountainous area of East Kazakhstan, are presented. The determination of micro- and macroplastics in water is based on sieving, drying, liquid oxidation, density separation and visual sorting using a microscope with a magnification of 40×. The detected plastic fragments in the aquatic environment include fishing line nets, Styrofoam balls, plastic bags, plastic bottles, wrappers, food labels and packages and other types of plastic waste. The sizes of the plastic fragments were ˃25 mm, 1.0–5.0 mm and 0.315–1.0 mm. The concentration of plastic in Lake Markakol was 837.5 µg/m3 in the tributaries and 482.1 µg/m3 in the lake water. The detected plastic mainly corresponded to sieve mesh sizes of 1.0–5.0 mm and 0.315–1.0 mm. The main sources of plastic pollution are fishing, tourism and the lack of adequate infrastructure for household waste management. These data emphasize the importance of measures to regulate plastic waste management in order to preserve the Lake Markakol ecosystem and maintain human health.

Lake Markakol is located in a metal-rich mountain area of Kazakhstan. Metal input into the lake water and in the bottom sediments can be expected. Lead, cobalt and nickel monitoring in both near-surface and deep-water layers and in bottom sediments was carried out using flame atomic absorption spectrometric analyses. Lead contamination of surface water ranging from 2.6 to 6.8 µg/L occurs in all water samples with the exception of the surface water layer. In the deep-water section concentrations reach up to 13.0–16.2 µg/L. Cobalt concentrations range from 36.8 to 67.5 µg/L in the surface layer and from 25.5 to 69.2 µg/L in the deep-water layer. High values of nickel were found in the surface and bottom layers of the water, ranging from 13.5 to 49.0 and 17.2 to 49.0 µg/L, respectively. High concentrations of lead, cobalt and nickel were identified in all samples of the bottom sediments. The lead content in bottom sediments reaches 11.3, cobalt reaches 10.3–18.0 and nickel reaches 15.0 mg kg−1. The results and their assessment can serve as a basis for future monitoring and measures to reduce pollution, restore the lake ecosystem and ensure the safety of fishery products for humans.

A majority of modern antitumor pharmaceuticals are accompanied by cardiotoxicity. The study aims to present practical approaches to stratifying the baseline risk of antitumor therapies' cardiotoxicity in patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer started on anthracyclines and/or trastuzumab. Material and methods: Stratifying the risks of antitumor therapy was carried out according to the European Society of Cardiology recommendations. A therapist examined all patients for existing cardiovascular diseases and risk factors detection. The blood levels of glucose, cholesterol, creatinine, cardiac troponin I, and brain natriuretic peptide were determined. Electrocardiography and echocardiography with an assessment of the myocardium global longitudinal strain were performed. Results: In total, 128 breast cancer patients with a mean age of 54.3±11.0 years were included in the study. Of them, 84.4% had tumor stages I and II, and 21.1% were HER2-positive. Chronic heart failure and ischemic heart disease were detected in 2.3%. Among the risk factors, the most common were arterial hypertension (51.6%), obesity (29.7%), age 65-70 years (18%), significant smoking history (15.6%), and diabetes mellitus (11.7%). Elevated cardiac troponin I and brain natriuretic peptide baseline levels were present in 5.5% and 7.0% of patients, respectively. To a high-risk group for cardiotoxic complications, 7.8% were allocated, 35.7% were assigned to the moderate-risk group, and 54.7% had low risk. High/very high and moderate-risk patients (43.5%) were referred to a cardiologist. Cardioprotective treatment was started immediately in high/very high-risk patients. Conclusion: All revealed differences between the cardiovascular risk groups were related to age, cardiovascular system condition, and the severity of comorbid pathologies. The baseline stratification of patients into risk groups is a crucial step in preventing the cardiotoxicity of anticancer therapy. Comprehensive assessing the patient's condition before and during chemotherapy allows for avoiding the development of fatal cardiovascular complications in at-risk patients.

The asymptomatic progression of chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity poses a significant risk to breast cancer patients. In the present single-center cohort study, a predictive model for evaluating the risk of cardiotoxicity during or by the end of chemotherapy was designed. The risk-prediction nomogram was delineated and assessed. In total, 34 patients out of 120 developed asymptomatic cardiotoxicity (28.3%). Of six explored biomarkers, only B-type natriuretic peptide showed a reliable pattern of incremental increase, revealing statistical significance between cardiotoxicity “+” and “−” groups by visit 4 or by the 9th month of monitoring (p 0.006). The following predictors were included in the model: age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, baseline glomerular filtration rate, 6 min walk test measured at visit 4, BNP values at visit 4, left ventricular ejection fraction levels at visit 4, a total dose of radiotherapy received, and anthracycline cumulative doses. The model’s AUC was 0.72 (95% CI 0.59; 0.86), evidencing the satisfactory predictive ability of the model; sensitivity 100% (95% CI 90.36; 100.0) at a specificity of 66.67% (95% CI 50.33; 79.79); PPV 54.1% [95% CI 47.13; 60.91]; PVN 100% [95% CI 94.64; 100.00]. The calibration plot showed satisfactory agreement between predicted and actual chances (p = 0.98). The designed model can be applied in settings lacking speckle tracking echocardiography.

As known, the clinical efficacy of chemotherapy is limited by the cardiotoxicity of drugs used. The study aimed to clarify cardiotoxic complications of chemotherapy from the Aktobe Medical Center database for 2018-2019. Material and methods: We performed a register study on essential parameters of the oncological process, drugs used, duration of chemotherapy, types of complications, and outcomes, including survival. Results: We found a total of 305 breast cancer cases. Chemotherapy was completed without complications in 65.9% of patients; treatment was interrupted due to complications - 10.5%; 6.2% of cardiovascular complications were identified. The two groups of patients, EchoCG + and EchoCG -, showed significant difference in the number of detected CV complications (p Conclusion: The analysis indicates the absence of a systematic approach to recording crucial information regarding cardiotoxicity. There is a lack of concordance in the actions of cardiologists and oncologists in the management of BC patients. The presence of lethal outcomes of chemotherapy with an established cause of cardiac death indicates the need to revise the cancer register management from the standpoint of cardio-oncology. In general, there is a need to develop local protocols for screening and monitoring patients undergoing cardiotoxic chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Objectives: Sputnik-V (Gam-COVID-Vac) is a recombinant adenoviral (rAdv) vector-based, COVID-19 vaccine now used in >70 countries. Mucosal immunity is thought to be important for protection against COVID-19. We did a prospective cohort study to assess Sputnik-V–elicited mucosal SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses. Methods: We divided 82 COVID-19–free participants into prior COVID-19 and no prior COVID-19 groups and followed them at day 21 after Sputnik-V dose 1′ (rAd5) and dose 2′ (rAd26). Nasopharyngeal swabs and blood were collected to perform SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic and immunologic assays. SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific IgG and IgA ELISAs were performed on both nasal swabs and blood. SARS-CoV-2 real-time RT-PCR testing was performed to exclude infectious influencing. Results: Nasal S-IgG levels increased 25-fold after dose 1′ (P < .001) and remained high after dose 2 in all participants. Prior COVID-19 exposure was associated with both elevated baseline mucosal IgG and IgA and higher postvaccination IgG, but not IgA, boost. Nasal IgA levels increased 16.5-fold after dose 1′ (P < .001) and remained high after dose 2’ in all participants. Compared to dose 1′, Sputnik-V dose 2′ did not further increase either mucosal IgG levels (P = .626) or IgA levels (P = .609). Conclusions: A single dose of Sputnik-V boosted mucosal SARS-CoV-2 immunity. The effects of Sputnik-V dose 2′ on mucosal immunity were minimal. These findings indicate (1) that intramuscularly administered adenoviral vaccines enhance SARS-CoV-2 immunity via both systemic and mucosal routes and (2) that cost-effectiveness and the efficacy of Sputnik-V vaccination could be improved by adjusting the current prime-booster regimen and extending the 21-day interval between the doses. Objectives: The widespread distribution of SARS-CoV-2 and its high contagiousness pose a challenge for researchers seeking to develop a rapid and cost-effective screening method to identify carriers of this virus. RT-PCR is considered the gold standard for detecting viral RNA in nasopharyngeal swabs, but it is time-consuming and requires constant changes in the primer composition due to the mutation of SARS-CoV-2 strains. We propose a method for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swabs using MALDI-TOF MS and machine learning. Methods: Nasopharyngeal swabs from patients with PCR-confirmed COVID-19 and control participants were tested (130 and 80 swabs, respectively) with MALDI-TOF MS MicroFlex LT using the HCCA matrix. MALDI spectra were preprocessed in R version 4.1.2 software with the MALDIquant R package using the workflow: sqrt transformation, wavelet smoothing, SNIP-based base removal, and PQN intensity calibration. Peaks were detected with MAD algorithms with following Peak alignment on the following parameters: minFreq 70% and tolerance 0.005. Machine learning was performed with the rtemis r package on GLM, random forest, and XGBoost models. Results: These models were characterized by specificity, sensitivity, and F1 score. GLM models (specificity 1 and sensitivity 0.5) showed a low F1 score of 0.71. However, the random forest and XGBoost models demonstrated sensitivity, specificity, and F1 score equaling 1. Conclusions: We propose a screening method for SARS-CoV-2 detection (sensitivity 1 and specificity 1). This methodology combines the analysis of nasopharyngeal swab samples using MALDI-TOF-MS with machine learning. It is suitable for screening patients with COVID-19 at the first stages of diagnosis. Random forest and XGBoost models demonstrated sensitivity, specificity, and F1 scores equaling 1.

The kariz (karez, qanat) represent one of the ancient water supply systems in arid zones. Natural collection of groundwater coming down from the mountains and its transportation to irrigated fields is the main advantage of the kariz systems. This article aims to introduce into the community of Central Asian hydrologists, hydrogeologists, and farmers the idea of the possibility of applying the kariz technologies and constructing them based on the experiences of neighboring countries and the ancient settlement of Sauran (Turkestan Region, Kazakhstan). Satellite imagery allowed identifying 3 (three) karizes around Sauran. The subsequent geomorphological analyses of the digital elevation model was carried out using the specialized ECO GIS-software. Further on, the maximum catchment areas (MCA) of mother wells (kariz beginning) were calculated. As the result, it was revealed that the target karizes themselves were located in the areas with low MCA. However, the mother wells were located in close proximity to the areas with high MCAs. 300 hectares was enough to collect groundwater to feed the entire irrigation system in ancient times. Modern examples from neighboring countries and the archaeological sites on the territory of Kazakhstan prove the possibility of using the kariz technology in current conditions. The introduction of this practice will allow introducing the foothill land in Southern Kazakhstan into agricultural circulation, as well as eliminating water losses due to evaporation during storage and transportation.

River delta soils are the final spatial units of the matter flow within the whole river catchment. Due to their spatial position in the catchment and due to their fine grain size composition, river delta soils are important matter sinks in general, especially for heavy metals. The article presents the results of spectrometric analysis of heavy metals in the soils of the Ili River Delta and State Natural Reserve “Ili-Balkhash” in 2021. This area is included in the list of wetlands of international importance under the Convention on Wetlands. Heavy metals in the samples were determined using the flame atomic absorption spectrometric method using the AA-7000 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The spatial distribution of the metals was visualized in the ArcGIS 10.5 environment. Copper concentrations were measured in the soils of the dry steppe, semi-desert and desert zones with average values up to 28.5 mg kg−1 and a maximum level of 75.1 mg kg−1. The concentrations of lead are 8.0–15.9 mg kg−1. The cadmium content exceeds the standards from 2.1 to 6.5 mg kg−1 on the whole territory at MPC 2.0 mg kg−1, reaching up to 3.3 MPC (Maximum Permissible Concentration). The cobalt concentration ranges from 6.7 to 20.6 mg kg−1, and nickel ranges from 11.3 to 22.2 mg kg−1. Soil contamination due to cobalt and nickel is observed in the northern and eastern parts of the study area. The received data about pollution of the soil cover by heavy metals makes it possible to assess the degree of anthropogenic load of the unique natural environment in the Ili River Delta and natural reserve.

The experience of designing and operating water treatment facilities for natural surface sources for the needs of populated areas and industrial enterprises in countries with developed industry allows us to conclude that it is advisable to purify water with a suspended solids content of up to 100-150 g/m3 using filtration methods. Therefore, the introduction into the practice of designing water treatment methods that ensure the use of compact, high-performance, automatically controlled structures acquires national economic importance. Filter stations equipped with pressure filters operating in the ultra-high-speed filtration mode meet these requirements to the greatest extent. The object of this study is a vertical pressure filter with an upward flow of purified water and a clamped filter layer. The applied research methods include the analysis of literature sources on the topic under study, experimental studies performed in a laboratory installation that fully simulates the technological scheme being developed, etc. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the use of pressure filters with an upward flow and a clamped load for the purification of natural waters containing up to 100-120 g/m3 of suspended solids, and to develop recommendations for their use in the conditions of the Uzbekistan Republic. Laboratory tests of ultra-high-speed pressure filtration with an ascending flow have proved the high retention capacity of loading from local granular materials when filtering the purified water in the direction of decreasing grain size. Thus, the effect of water purification to remove suspended solids during the inter-washing period of the filter, which reached 10-18 hours, was stable and amounted to 87-97 percent.

The prognosis of cancer treatment depends on, among other aspects, the cardiotoxicity of chemotherapy. This research aims to create a feasible algorithm for the early diagnosis of antitumor therapy cardiotoxicity in breast cancer patients. The paper represents a protocol for a prospective cohort study with N 120 eligible participants admitted for treatment with anthracyclines and/or trastuzumab. These patients will be allocated into four risk groups regarding potential cardiotoxic complications. Patients will be examined five times every three months for six biomarkers: cardiac troponin I (cTnI), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), C-reactive protein (CRP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), galectin-3 (Gal-3), and D-dimer, simultaneously with echocardiographic methods, including speckle tracking. The adjusted relative risk (aOR) of interrupting an entire course of chemotherapy due to cardiotoxic events will be assessed using multiple analyses of proportional Cox risks. The Cox model will also assess associations between baseline biomarker values and time to cardiotoxic events. Moreover, partly conditional survival models will be applied to determine associations between repeated assessments of changes in biomarkers from baseline and time to cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction. All models will be adjusted for cancer therapy regimen, baseline LVEF, groups at risk, baseline biomarker values, and age. The decision-tree and principal component analysis (PCA) methods will also be applied. Thus, feasible patterns will be detected.

As a consequence of global climate change and the resultant recurring periods of drought and water scarcity, the ecological status of irrigated lands in southern Kazakhstan has deteriorated. One of the largest massifs in terms of area is Myrzashol, located in the south of the Turkestan region. Field experimental studies have been conducted on this array over the past 25 years. Experimental work was carried out on saline, abandoned, old-irrigated lands of this massif. As a result of the development of secondary salinization and salinization of soils, the area of irrigated lands with varying degrees of salinity increased from 50.4 to 99.2 thousand hectares or 2 times. In all, the irrigated area under consideration contains approximately 147.0 thousand hectares of land. Of this area, 67% has varying degrees of salinity. An increase in the concentration of salts in the soil not only reduces crop yields, but also disrupts the soil structure and porosity. This, in turn, negatively impacts the soil's water permeability. As a result, the land with such soils is excluded from agricultural production due to low productivity and ineffective irrigation. This article presents the results of fi eld studies to determine the effect of irrigation with mineralised collector-drainage water (CDW) on the yield of cotton and alfalfa using CDW with a mineralisation of 2.4 to 4.0 gram/litre (g/l). A control site was used for comparison, where these crops were irrigated using fresh irrigation water with mineralization levels of up to 0.5 g/l. Additionally, we explored the feasibility of using collected water for the irrigation of agricultural crops. Based on the fi ndings from fi eld experiments, it has been concluded that using CDW with sulphate-type mineralisation levels up to 4.0 g/l to irrigate cotton and salt-resistant alfalfa forage crops on saline soils can lead to production yields of 27.1 centners per hectare (hereinafter -- c/ha) and 155.0 c/ha for cotton and alfalfa, respectively, without depleting valuable freshwater resources.
