2. Ibram X. Kendi and Relativist Antiracism.

Abstract

Ibram X. Kendi's bestselling book How to be an Antiracist (2019) has been enormously influential and deserves the serious attention it has received. It follows his important historical work Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America (2016), which is much more scholarly and won the National Book Award the year it came out. But these books seem to take for granted a fairly simple version of cultural relativism in ethics that is widely regarded by moral philosophers as seriously defective. I want to take these doubts further and show that cultural relativism is a disastrous theoretical choice for an anti-racist like Kendi to make. In Section I I explain the kind of relativism I have in mind: agent-based, cultural, normative ethical relativism. In Section II, using the two books I have mentioned, I give textual support to my attribution of this kind of relativism to Kendi. In Section III I argue for my theoretical-disaster claim and defend it against some Kendi-inspired criticism. In Section IV I address some serious relativist doubts about ethical universalism, the opposite of relativism. Finally, in Section V I offer some brief concluding remarks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In 'Moral Arguments for Theistic Belief' Robert Merrihew Adams defends a theistic argument from the nature of morality according to which the existence of God is entailed by the divine-command theory, which Adams believes is our best account of morality. In reply I examine the four arguments for the modified divine-command theory that Adams develops in this and later papers, and I show that three of the arguments are much too weak to enable him to make a case for theism in this way and that the fourth itself depends on the assumption that there is a God and so would render that case circular.

Abstract

A mathematical analysis of branched pathway regulation has led to the prediction of a novel homoserine control in Escherichia coliB. Experimental support for such control is presented in this paper. Homoserine, the precursor of both threonine and methionine, inhibits nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+)-specific glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.4), the enzyme catalyzing the first reaction in ammonia assimilation. Physiological and biochemical evidence for this effect are offered. Homoserine depresses the growth rate of the organism, and glutamate, the product of the inhibited reaction, reverses this effect. The NADP+-specific glutamate dehydrogenase activity in cell-free extracts is inhibited by homoserine, and this inhibition parallels the restriction of growth rate. These effects are found in other enteric bacteria which share a similar overall pattern of control for the amino acids derived from aspartate. On the other hand, a sampling of more distantly related species which have different pathways and/or regulatory patterns provides no evidence for homoserine inhibition of the glutamate dehydrogenase reaction.

33. Factitious Hemoptysis: The Case of the Red Towel

• A perplexing case of apparent submassive hemoptysis in a young woman was discovered to be a case of factitious illness to attract medical attention. The case fits most of the accepted criteria for Munchausen's syndrome. Variants of this syndrome are reviewed. It is often not recognized that factitious illness is frequently seen in otherwise well-socialized persons, often health professionals (as in this case).(Arch Intern Med 1983;143:567-568)
