Abstract

The BISOU (Balloon Interferometer for Spectral Observations of the Universe) project aims to study the viability and prospects of a balloon-borne spectrometer, pathfinder of a future space mission dedicated to the measurements of the CMB spectral distortions. We present here a preliminary concept based on previous space mission proposals, together with some sensitivity calculation results for the observation goals, showing that a 5-sigma measurement of the y-distortions is achievable., Comment: 12 pages. Abstract

A prototype version of the Q & U bolometric interferometer for cosmology (QUBIC) underwent a campaign of testing in the laboratory at Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology laboratory in Paris (APC). The detection chain is currently made of 256 NbSi transition edge sensors (TES) cooled to 320 mK. The readout system is a 128:1 time domain multiplexing scheme based on 128 SQUIDs cooled at 1 K that are controlled and amplified by an SiGe application specific integrated circuit at 40 K. We report the performance of this readout chain and the characterization of the TES. The readout system has been functionally tested and characterized in the lab and in QUBIC. The low noise amplifier demonstrated a white noise level of 0.3 nV.Hz^-0.5. Characterizations of the QUBIC detectors and readout electronics includes the measurement of I-V curves, time constant and the noise equivalent power. The QUBIC TES bolometer array has approximately 80% detectors within operational parameters. It demonstrated a thermal decoupling compatible with a phonon noise of about 5.10^-17 W.Hz^-0.5 at 410 mK critical temperature. While still limited by microphonics from the pulse tubes and noise aliasing from readout system, the instrument noise equivalent power is about 2.10^-16 W.Hz^-0.5, enough for the demonstration of bolometric interferometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in JCAP

Abstract

139 pages ; high resolution version can be found on the qubic website (http://qubic.in2p3.fr/QUBIC/Home.html); QUBIC is an instrument aiming at measuring the B mode polarisation anisotropies at medium scales angular scales (30-200 multipoles). The search for the primordial CMB B-mode polarization signal is challenging, because of many difficulties: smallness of the expected signal, instrumental systematics that could possibly induce polarization leakage from the large E signal into B, brighter than anticipated polarized foregrounds (dust) reducing to zero the initial hope of finding sky regions clean enough to have a direct primordial B-modes observation. The QUBIC instrument is designed to address all aspects of this challenge with a novel kind of instrument, a Bolometric Interferometer, combining the background-limited sensitivity of Transition-Edge-Sensors and the control of systematics allowed by the observation of interference fringe patterns, while operating at two frequencies to disentangle polarized foregrounds from primordial B mode polarization. Abstract

BRAIN/MBI is a mm-wave ground-based experiment dedicated to the study of the B-modes of CMB polarization. It is based on the bolometric interferometry (BI) technique, and it is the result of the merging of two different projects proposed in the last years: BRAIN (France, Italy, UK) and MBI 4 (US, UK). BI is a technique already validated in a laboratory environment using small scale demonstrators employing as detectors standard 4 K bolometers. In fact, both the MBI and BRAIN teams demonstrated that interference fringes are observed once the signals coming from the two antennas of a single baseline are phase-shifted, combined and then detected. Both optical and wave-guided combination schemes have been tested within the collaboration. From the hardware point of view, the simplest unity of BRAIN/MBI is constituted by a feed horn, an OMT, and two independent phase shifters for each polarization. After phase shifting, the two beams coming out from each unity, feed a beam combiner redirecting the signals towards the detectors. Some of the most critical components, that are OMTs, phase-shifters and possibly detectors, will be made using superconducting technologies and are now under development. Moreover, detailed calculations showed that the sensitivity of a bolometric interferometer, if operated with a proper phase modulation-demodulation scheme, can approach that one of an imager with a comparable number of detectors, while exploiting the systematics cleaness of compact interferometers. On one side, BRAIN/MBI will be an instrument with a sensitivity and a polarization purity suitable for the detection of B-modes. On the other side, it will be a benchmark for new and promisings technologies that may be qualified for the CMB science in perspective of a post-Planck space mission. Since BI is prone to different contaminations from systematics with respect to imagers, a cross-check of the results and a comparison of two conceptually orthogonal strategies will finally be possible

Abstract

We present an improved analysis of the final data set from the QUaD experiment. Using an improved technique to remove ground contamination, we double the effective sky area and hence increase the precision of our cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectrum measurements by ~30% versus that previously reported. In addition, we have improved our modeling of the instrument beams and have reduced our absolute calibration uncertainty from 5% to 3.5% in temperature. The robustness of our results is confirmed through extensive jackknife tests, and by way of the agreement that we find between our two fully independent analysis pipelines. For the standard six-parameter ΛCDM model, the addition of QUaD data marginally improves the constraints on a number of cosmological parameters over those obtained from the WMAP experiment alone. The impact of QUaD data is significantly greater for a model extended to include either a running in the scalar spectral index, or a possible tensor component, or both. Adding both the QUaD data and the results from the Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver experiment, the uncertainty in the spectral index running is reduced by ~25% compared to WMAP alone, while the upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio is reduced from r < 0.48 to r < 0.33 (95% c.l.). This is the strongest limit on tensors to date from the CMB alone. We also use our polarization measurements to place constraints on parity-violating interactions to the surface of last scattering, constraining the energy scale of Lorentz violating interactions to <1.5 × 10–43 GeV (68% c.l.). Finally, we place a robust upper limit on the strength of the lensing B-mode signal. Assuming a single flat band power between ℓ = 200 and ℓ = 2000, we constrain the amplitude of B-modes to be <0.57 μK2 (95% c.l.)., Astronomy

Abstract

We describe the polarization calibration of the QUaD experiment, including determination of the polarization efficiency of the detectors and their orientation angles. QUaD is a millimeter-wavelength polarimeter that observed the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from a site at the South Pole. The experiment comprises a 2.64 m Cassegrain telescope equipped with a cryogenically cooled receiver containing an array of 62 polarization-sensitive bolometers. The focal plane contains pixels at two different frequency bands, 100 GHz and 150 GHz, with angular resolutions of 5prime and 3farcm5, respectively. The high angular resolution allows observation of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies over a wide range of scales. The instrument commenced operation in early 2005 and collected science data during three successive Austral winter seasons of observation.

Abstract

There are many projects today where data is collected automatically to provide input for various data mining algorithms. A problem with freshly generated datasets is their unsupervised nature, leading to difficulty in fitting predictive algorithms without substantial manual effort. One of the first steps in dataset preparation and mining is anomaly detection, where clear anomalies and outliers as well as events or changes in the pattern of the data are identified as a precursor to subsequent steps in data mining. In the research presented here, we provide a multi-step anomaly detection process which utilises different combinations of algorithms for the most accurate identification of outliers and events.

Abstract

We describe the polarization calibration of the QUaD experiment, including determination of the polarization efficiency of the detectors and their orientation angles. QUaD is a millimeter-wavelength polarimeter that observed the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from a site at the South Pole. The experiment comprises a 2.64 m Cassegrain telescope equipped with a cryogenically cooled receiver containing an array of 62 polarization-sensitive bolometers. The focal plane contains pixels at two different frequency bands, 100 GHz and 150 GHz, with angular resolutions of 5prime and 3farcm5, respectively. The high angular resolution allows observation of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies over a wide range of scales. The instrument commenced operation in early 2005 and collected science data during three successive Austral winter seasons of observation.
