First-ever measurements of particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10, and TSP) along with gaseous pollutants (CO, NO2, and SO2) were performed from June 2019 to April 2020 in Faisalabad, Metropolitan, Pakistan, to assess their seasonal variations; Summer 2019, Autumn 2019, Winter 2019-2020, and Spring 2020. Pollutant measurements were carried out at 30 locations with a 3-km grid distance from the Sitara Chemical Industry in District Faisalabad to Bhianwala, Sargodha Road, Tehsil Lalian, District Chiniot. ArcGIS 10.8 was used to interpolate pollutant concentrations using the inverse distance weightage method. PM2.5, PM10, and TSP concentrations were highest in summer, and lowest in autumn or winter. CO, NO2, and SO2 concentrations were highest in summer or spring and lowest in winter. Seasonal average NO2 and SO2 concentrations exceeded WHO annual air quality guide values. For all 4 seasons, some sites had better air quality than others. Even in these cleaner sites air quality index (AQI) was unhealthy for sensitive groups and the less good sites showed Very critical AQI (> 500). Dust-bound carbon and sulfur contents were higher in spring (64 mg g-1) and summer (1.17 mg g-1) and lower in autumn (55 mg g-1) and winter (1.08 mg g-1). Venous blood analysis of 20 individuals showed cadmium and lead concentrations higher than WHO permissible limits. Those individuals exposed to direct roadside pollution for longer periods because of their occupation tended to show higher Pb and Cd blood concentrations. It is concluded that air quality along the roadside is extremely poor and potentially damaging to the health of exposed workers.

ABSTRACT Sulfur dioxide is serious ultimatum to human health as well as environment, while carbon dioxide is viewed as one of the primary drivers of the worldwide temperature alteration. Therefore, capturing of these gases is a dynamic research subject attracting much consideration from scientists. Herein, we report synthesis of a series of Co‐ZIF and bimetallic M‐Co‐ZIF adsorbents and application for room temperature adsorption of SO2 and CO2. In this work, the breakthrough curves for the adsorption of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide on Co‐ZIF and M‐Co‐ZIF were obtained experimentally and theoretically using a laboratory‐scale fixed bed column at room temperature. In this work, the adsorption capacities and breakthrough points for modified bimetallic M‐Co‐ZIF were found to be relatively higher than parent Co‐ZIF. Notably, a high SO2 uptake capacity of 7.1 mmol/g for Zr‐Co‐ZIF and high CO2 uptake capacity of 69.9 mmol/g for Ni‐Co‐ZIF were achieved. The parent cobalt and bimetallic ZIF materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and nitrogen physisorption. The XRD results confirm the formation of pure phase highly crystalline ZIF materials while BET analysis suggests high surface area of prepared adsorbents. Finally, the results of dynamic adsorption combined with characterization show great potential for preparation of bimetallic ZIF adsorbents for effective SO2 and CO2 adsorption. This study determined whether natural preservatives, when used as substitutes for sulfur dioxide (SO2) in Boerewors, influenced water activity (aw), pH, and moisture content; microbial and sensory quality; and the lipid oxidative and color stability in Boerewors models. The inclusion of sulfur dioxide at 0.035% (positive control), formulation without preservatives (negative control); protective cultures (PrC1 and PrC2), containing lactic acid bacteria; and plant extract blends (KD1 and KD2), containing rosemary and acerola extracts and buffered vinegar, were evaluated. The use of KD2 increased pH on Days 0 and 6, but the increased pH did not affect the microbial preservative effect. The aw of the treatments was stable over 6 days and therefore also did not have an influence on the microbial preservative effect of the natural preservatives. Both plant extract preservatives (KD1 and KD2) increased the oxidative stability of lipids more than any other treatment, including the positive control. The microbial stability results were inconclusive because of the protective cultures, which increased the total bacteria count. The counts of coliform and Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus were analyzed, but significant differences between the treatments were not observed. KD1, which contained rosemary plant extract, maintained the lowest TBC at the same level as the positive control but had a slightly lower redness score. Treatments had no effect on sensory evaluation. The use of KD1 and KD2 plant preservatives proofed to be worthy as replacers of SO2 in Boerewors. Prior studies obtained mixed conclusions on the relationship between firm exporting and pollution emissions, probably because the role of environmental regulation has been ignored in this relationship. This study focuses on whether the abatement effect of exporting is related to the stringency of environmental regulation. To avoid measurement bias in the environmental regulation stringency faced by firms, we use the two control zones policy implemented in China to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions as a natural experiment to distinguish the difference in the SO2 regulation stringency faced by different firms. Empirical results show that Chinese manufacturing firms can significantly reduce their SO2 emissions intensity by exporting, but the abatement effect of exporting occurs only in the firms regulated by the two control zones policy. This result confirms for the first time that the abatement effect of exporting stems from the incentives of stringent environmental regulations. Further analysis shows that the abatement effect of exporting is realized mainly through firm investment in source control technologies rather than in end-of-pipe treatment technologies. Purpose: This study examined the influence of various storage conditions on Thompson seedless (Vitis vinifera) grapes quality. Research method: Grapes were stored under four conditions: control (room temperature i.e., 20-22°C, no SO2), T1 with SO2 sheets at room temperature i.e., 20-22°C, T2 with SO2 sheets in cold storage at 1°C and T3 without SO2 sheets in cold storage at 1°C. Changes in acidity, total soluble solids (TSS), total anthocyanin content, total phenols, sugars (glucose and fructose), transresveratrol, decay %, weight loss % and antioxidant activity were monitored over 60 days. Findings: The findings revealed a synergistic effect between SO2 and cold storage. Grapes stored with both SO2 sheets and cold storage (T1) exhibited the slowest decline in anthocyanin, phenols and antioxidant activity of 211.06 mg/L, 2102.39 mg/L and 7.19 mM DPPH, respectively after 60 days. T1 grapes found to have slower reduction in sugars and transresveratrol concentration i.e., 15.47 to 15.37 g/100mL and 695 to 516 µg/g, respectively compared to control samples 15.47 to 14.81 g/100mL and 695 to 500 µg/g, respectively. Research limitations: The study focused solely on storage conditions of Thompson seedless variety grapes, limiting the generalizability of the findings to different grape varieties and maturity levels. Originality/value: These results highlighted the importance of proper storage techniques, particularly the combined use of SO2 and cold storage, for maintaining grape quality and extending shelf life. Impaired cognitive health is the leading cause of various disabilities and disorders. Air pollution has been dramatically increasing over the last few decades and has been identified as a potential risk factor for impaired cognitive health. This study investigates the effect of air pollutants, particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ground-level ozone, on global cognitive health. The data on environmental pollutants and cognitive health were recorded from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Initially, 790 articles were identified after screening for duplicates and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 studies were included, and data was synthesized to get a pooled result. The overall results revealed that increased exposure to PM2.5 was positively and significantly associated with cognitive decline (OR 1.49; 95% CI 1.11, 1.99; p = 0.01). The risk of cognitive impairment due to PM10 (OR 1.30; 95% CI 1.00–1.70, p = 0.05), and SO2 (OR 1.39; 95% CI 1.27–1.51; p < 0.01) exposure were also significantly heightened. The study findings show that overall exposure to particulate matter PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 was associated with an increased risk of a decrease in global cognitive functions. The findings suggest that reducing levels of air pollutants could be a strategic approach to mitigate cognitive health risks in populations worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Air pollution causes many respiratory disorders, especially in children and the elderly. These disorders include asthma exacerbations, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Research on the association between air pollution and respiratory disorders helps to reevaluate environmental policies in developing countries. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 932 children with respiratory manifestations admitted from December 2017 to December 2019 at the Emergency Department of Akbar Children's Hospital of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. Air pollution indices such as concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM) smaller than 2.5 and 10 μm and other parameters, including the air quality index (AQI), air temperature, and humidity level from 2017 to 2019, were retrieved from Mashhad Environmental Pollution Monitoring Center. Demographic and clinical data of patients were collected from patients' hospital documents. We used descriptive analytical methods such as central tendency, variability, and frequency distribution to report and analyze demographic and clinical data through tables and diagrams. The association between air pollution indices and respiratory manifestations was examined by the Spearman correlation test. The correlation between the AQI and total hospital admissions and asthma-related hospital admissions was also evaluated by the Spearman correlation test. Results: Hospital admissions due to respiratory manifestations were not associated with the AQI of each month (p-value = 0.794). The concentration of SO2 was correlated with respiratory-related hospital admissions (correlation coefficient = 0.487, p-value = 0.016) but not asthma attacks. Conclusion: Generally, our cross-sectional study showed no statistically considerable association between air pollution and hospital admissions due to respiratory manifestations and asthma attacks in children. Sulfonated carbon catalysts exhibit superior catalytic performance for production of biobased chemicals, but the catalyst preparation approaches are still suffered from high corrosion and possible pollution risks. In this paper, lignin extracted from corn stover was used to prepare lignin-based activated carbon, which was then subjected to grafting modification by sulfur dioxide nonthermal plasma method to construct a novel lignin-derived solid acid catalyst (LP-LDSA). The catalytic performances of LP-LDSA were further determined by dehydration of fructose to produce 5-HMF in a biphasic solvent system composed by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water. Under the optimal conditions, the 5-HMF yield and reaction selectivity were 88.9% and 89.4%, respectively. This LP-LDSA catalyst also exhibited excellent stability and reusability in five sequential reaction batches. This method has advantages of shorter solid acid preparation duration, lower energy consumption, and higher catalytic stability, presenting an innovative and green method for sulfonation production of solid acid catalyst. A palladium-catalyzed one-pot amino-sulfonylation of aryl iodide derivatives with thiourea dioxide, PdCl2 dppf, and one-pot added hydroxylamine- O -sulfonic acid is presented. This amino-sulfonylation gave structure diversity to aryl primary sulfonamides and features good functional group compatibility, mild reaction conditions, excellent regioselectivity, and moderate to good yields. The robustness and potential of this method have also been successfully demonstrated by late-stage elaboration and gram-scale reaction. The utilization of microalgae to treat carbon dioxide (CO2)-rich industrial off-gas has been suggested as both beneficial for emissions reduction and economically favorable for the production of microalgal products. Common sources of off-gases include coal combustion (2–15% CO2), cement production (8–15% CO2), coke production (18–23% CO2), and ore smelting (6–7% CO2). However, industrial off-gas also commonly contains other acid gas components [typically nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur dioxide (SO2)] and metals that could inhibit microalgae growth and productivity. To utilize industrial off-gas effectively in microalgae cultivation systems, a number of solutions have been proposed to overcome potential inhibitions. These include bioprospecting to identify suitable strains, genetic modification to improve specific cellular characteristics, chemical additions, and bioreactor designs and operating procedures. In this review, results from microalgae experiments related to utilizing off-gas are presented, and the outcomes of different conditions discussed along with potential solutions to resolve limitations associated with the application of off-gas. This article reveals the source of exporters' better environmental performance (exporters' environmental premium) for Chinese firms with a model based on heterogeneous firm theory and empirical analysis with a difference‐in‐differences method based on the Chinese export tax refund reduction in 2004 and comprehensive firm‐level environmental survey data. The results show that exporting releases Chinese firms' financing constraints and enables them to upgrade production technologies quickly by applying advanced production technology (capital‐embodied technological upgrading) rather than by upgrading abatement technologies, to drive down sulfur dioxide (SO2) intensity and energy intensity. Exporting also reduces a firm's average energy intensity and SO2 intensity by reallocating resources from energy‐intensive and polluting production and firms to cleaner ones, that is, the resource reallocation effect. Since the significance of fiscal decentralization and technological innovations cannot be ignored in monitoring the targets of environmental-related sustainable development goals, a full picture of its relationship with environmental quality is vigorous. Thus, this study aims to analyze the influence of financial centralization and technological development on environmental quality in China during the period from 2000 to 2020. The results of this study indicate the positive role of fiscal decentralization in ecological damages by increasing sulfur dioxide emissions. Moreover, technological innovations assist to diminish the pollution levels. The study also confirmed the association between environmental degradation and economic growth in an inverted U-shaped environment Kuznets curve hypothesis. The policy targeting financial decentralization, technological innovation, and economic growth significantly alter sulfur dioxide emissions and vice versa. The progress of this research also has important political effects by restructuring government expenditures and making them more effective by balancing local development and enhancing the quality of the environment. Regarding policy ramifications, we believe that to address declining ecological quality, China should develop measures to diminish the levels of environmental pollution by encouraging an energy-efficient system. Herein we report the synthesis of bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP)‐containing sulfonamides via a transition metal‐free process of a three‐component reaction among BCP‐containing N‐tosyl hydrazones, 1,4‐diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane bis(sulfur dioxide) adduct (DABSO), and amines. Different from existing methods to synthesize BCP‐containing sulfonamides, our method avoids the usage of sulfonyl halides, which could be challenging due to chemical instabilities. We have also demonstrated that this methodology is suitable for library synthesis of such sulfonamides. As a result, we can expect future application in drug discovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Controlling the microorganisms involved in alcoholic fermentation during wine production can be achieved by adding a small quantity of spontaneously fermenting must to freshly crushed grapes, a technique known as pied de cuve (PdC). This method not only serves as an inoculation starter but also enhances the microbial footprint unique to each wine region. Recent studies have confirmed that wines inoculated with PdC exhibit efficient fermentation kinetics comparable to those inoculated with commercial strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, further research is required to draw robust conclusions about the chemical and sensory impacts of PdC-inoculated wines. In this study, we examined the chemical and sensory effects of the PdC technique across three different harvests: Muscat of Alexandria (Spain, harvests 2022 and 2023) and Sauvignon Blanc (Chile, harvest 2023). Each PdC was prepared using various stressors (sulfur dioxide, ethanol, and temperature). Our findings revealed that wines produced with PdC exhibited similar fermentation kinetics and sensory profiles to those inoculated with commercial strains. Notably, PdC fermentations resulted in lower concentrations of acetic acid compared to both the commercial strain and spontaneous fermentations. The sensory analysis indicated that PdC wines significantly differed from those made with commercial strains, with PdC wines displaying more pronounced tropical notes. These results suggest that the PdC technique, particularly when using specific stressors, can maintain desirable fermentation characteristics while enhancing certain sensory attributes, offering a viable alternative to traditional inoculation methods. Declining levels of social welfare caused by climate warming and air pollution place increasing constraints on high-quality, sustainable global development. To achieve global climate-governance goals, it is essential to accelerate the process of peaking carbon emissions and meeting air-quality standards. Despite growing awareness of the impact of low-carbon city policies on the environment, few studies have focused on their impact on urban air quality. Based on panel data drawn from 275 cities between 2011 and 2017, the present study evaluates the effects of a low-carbon city policy on urban sulfur-dioxide emissions, using the low-carbon city policy as a quasi-natural experiment. The findings reveal that urban sulfur-dioxide emissions have obvious spatial-autocorrelation characteristics, showing obvious spatial clustering. The low-carbon city policy not only significantly reduced urban sulfur-dioxide emissions in pilot cities, but also suppressed sulfur-dioxide emissions in surrounding cities through an indirect rebound effect. This paper provides a theoretical reference for collaborative governance, which can help to achieve peak carbon emissions and air-quality standards. To reach those goals, nations must abandon territorial prevention-and-control methods based on administrative divisions and to fully activate cross-city regional joint prevention-and-control measures. This study proposes key policies, including promoting inter-city regional coordination mechanisms, strengthening the collaborative governance in relation to carbon-dioxide and sulfur-dioxide emissions, and promoting the construction of inner-city green facilities. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from ship exhausts pose serious health and environmental concerns. Herein, the SO2 absorption and desorption characteristics of tertiary amines with different functional groups were explored under simulated ship exhaust gas conditions. Tertiary amines with electron‐donating groups had superior absorption performance to those with electron‐withdrawing groups, and highly polar absorbents exhibited enhanced SO2 absorption loading. Dimethylaniline (DMA) showed excellent desorption performance, outperforming other absorbents (amino acids, ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents) in terms of cyclic capacity. Thus, tertiary amines, especially DMA, can be potentially used for the prevention of SO2 emissions from ship exhausts and other desulfurization applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The desulfurization of carbons modified with SO2 was studied as a dispersion in boiling cyclohexane (81°C) using activated carbon (mAC) and graphene oxide (mGO), modified by SO2. The steady‐state species in the carbon matrix after the catalytic reduction of SO2 was considered a trisulfane. For mAC, there was a burst of a sulfur species identified as S2 by UV spectrum with a maximum at 217 nm (εM at 217 nm = 2.56 × 103) that showed a second‐order decay of absorbance with kS2 = 47.29 M‐1·sec‐1 (ΔG354‡= 18.1 kcal·mol‐1). The product was postulated to be S4. No other consecutive reaction was observed because of the possible adsorption of S4 in the carbon matrix. The desulfurization of mGO was shown by XPS and the kinetics were a second‐order decay up to 16 min (kS2= 18.41 M‐1·sec‐1; ΔG354‡= 18.8 kcal·mol‐1) followed by a second‐order increase of absorbance with kS4 = 3.84 M‐1·sec‐1 (ΔG354‡= 19.9), where the product showed a double maximum at 260‐285 nm typical of S8. These results are consistent with a mechanism of consecutive thermodynamically favorable dimerizations of S2 and S4 and with the desulfurization mechanism that has been previously postulated. The paper presents a mathematical model of injecting liquid sulfur dioxide in a porous bed saturated with methane and water in a flat-dimensional approximation. The formulation of the problem under consideration implies the formation of SO2 hydrate on the frontal surface separating the region saturated with sulfur dioxide and its hydrate and also with methane and water. An investigation has been made into the effects of the pressure and temperature of the sulfur dioxide being injected, of the initial temperature and also of the permeability of the system on the specific features of the formation of SO2 hydrate. Based on numerical calculations, it has been shown that in the case of low injection pressure values, the formation of sulfur dioxide hydrate can occur in a regime with the formation of an additional region containing methane and its gas hydrate. It has also been shown that in the case of high values of injection temperature and of the bed′s initial temperature, and also of the bed permeability, the formation of sulfur dioxide hydrate occurs without the formation of a region containing methane and its gas hydrate. The critical injection temperature whose exceedance results in the occurrence of a regime without the formation of a region containing methane and its gas hydrate has been shown related to the SO2 injection pressure. Based on the analysis of this dependence, it has been shown that the regime with the formation of a region saturated with methane and its gas hydrate is characteristic of the case of low injection temperature and pressure values. Sulfur dioxide (SO2), a common environmental and industrial air pollutant, possesses a potent effect in eliciting cough reflex, but the primary type of airway sensory receptors involved in its tussive action has not been clearly identified. This study was carried out to determine the relative roles of three major types of vagal bronchopulmonary afferents [slowly adapting receptors (SARs), rapidly adapting receptors (RARs), and C-fibers] in regulating the cough response to inhaled SO2. Our results showed that inhalation of SO2 (300 or 600 ppm for 8 min) evoked an abrupt and intense stimulatory effect on bronchopulmonary C-fibers, which continued for the entire duration of inhalation challenge and returned toward the baseline in 1–2 min after resuming room air-breathing in anesthetized and mechanically ventilated mice. In stark contrast, the same SO2 inhalation challenge generated a distinct and consistent inhibitory effect on both SARs and phasic RARs; their phasic discharges synchronized with respiratory cycles during the baseline (breathing room air) began to decline progressively within 1–3 min after the onset of SO2 inhalation, ceased completely before termination of the 8-min inhalation challenge, and then slowly returned toward the baseline after >40 min. In a parallel study in awake mice, inhalation of SO2 at the same concentration and duration as that in the nerve recording experiments evoked cough responses in a pattern and time course similar to that observed in the C-fiber responses. Based on these results, we concluded that stimulation of vagal bronchopulmonary C-fibers is primarily responsible for triggering the cough response to inhaled SO2. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: This study demonstrated that inhalation of a high concentration of sulfur dioxide, an irritant gas and common air pollutant, completely and reversibly inhibited the neural activities of both slowly adapting receptor and rapidly adapting receptor, two major types of mechanoreceptors in the lungs with their activities conducted by myelinated fibers. Furthermore, the results of this study suggested that stimulation of vagal bronchopulmonary C-fibers is primarily responsible for triggering the cough reflex responses to inhaled sulfur dioxide. Objectives: Mast cell (MC) degranulation is a key process in allergic reactions and inflammatory responses. Aspartate aminotransferase 1 (AAT1)-derived endogenous sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an important regulator of MC function. However, the mechanism underlying its role in MC degranulation remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism by which endogenous SO2 controlled MC degranulation. Methods: HMC-1 and Rat basophilic leukemia cell MC line (RBL-2H3) were used in the cell experiments. SO2 content was detected by in situ fluorescent probe. MC degranulation represented by the release rate of MC β-hexosaminidase was determined using a colorimetric assay. Sulfenylation of galectin-9 (Gal-9) in MCs and purified protein was detected using a biotin switch assay. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to determine the exact sulfenylation sites of Gal-9 by SO2. Animal models of passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) and hypoxia-driven pulmonary vascular remodeling were used to investigate the effect of SO2 on mast cell activation in vivo. Site-directed mutation of Gal-9 was conducted to confirm the exact site of SO2 and support the significance of SO2/Gal-9 signal axis in the regulation of MC degranulation. Results: Degranulation was increased in AAT1-knockdowned MCs, and SO2 supplementation reversed the increase in MC degranulation. Furthermore, deficiency of endogenous SO2 contributed to IgE-mediated degranulation in vitro. Besides, SO2 inhibited IgE-mediated and hypoxia-driven MC degranulation in vivo. Mechanistically, LC-MS/MS analysis and site-directed mutation results showed that SO2 sulfenylated Gal-9 at cysteine 74. Although the relationship between the size of urban industrial land use and pollutant emissions has been widely discussed from different perspectives (e.g., the scale and crowding effects), the results of various studies have revealed positive, negative, and combined impact relationships. However, how the expansion of urban industrial land use affects SO2 emissions remains unknown. We need to clarify this relationship in order to facilitate the realization of China's pollution reduction and emission reduction goals. This study used the panel data from 294 cities spanning from 2011 to 2019 to construct a spatial econometric model. The objective was to explore the correlation between the scale of urban industrial land and sulfur dioxide emissions in China. The results show that a large scale of urban industrial land use corresponds to lower sulfur dioxide emissions per unit of industrial added value. By gaining a deeper understanding of the relationship between the scale of urban industrial land use and sulfur dioxide emissions, policymakers can further reduce pollutant emissions by rationalizing the planning of urban industrial land use and industrial layout. In addition to promoting industrial agglomeration and economies of scale in cities with extensive industrial land use, this strategy can support the development of efficient and environmentally friendly industries in areas with limited industrial land use. Abstract Background Air pollution causes many respiratory disorders, especially in children and the elderly. These disorders include asthma exacerbations, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Research on the association between air pollution and respiratory disorders helps to reevaluate environmental policies in developing countries. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 932 children with respiratory manifestations admitted from December 2017 to December 2019 at the Emergency Department of Akbar Children’s Hospital of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. Air pollution indices such as concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM) smaller than 2.5 and 10 μm and other parameters, including the air quality index (AQI), air temperature, and humidity level from 2017 to 2019, were retrieved from Mashhad Environmental Pollution Monitoring Center. Demographic and clinical data of patients were collected from patients’ hospital documents. We used descriptive analytical methods such as central tendency, variability, and frequency distribution to report and analyze demographic and clinical data through tables and diagrams. The association between air pollution indices and respiratory manifestations was examined by the Spearman correlation test. The correlation between the AQI and total hospital admissions and asthma-related hospital admissions was also evaluated by the Spearman correlation test. Results Hospital admissions due to respiratory manifestations were not associated with the AQI of each month (p-value = 0.794). The concentration of SO2 was correlated with respiratory-related hospital admissions (correlation coefficient = 0.487, p-value = 0.016) but not asthma attacks. Conclusion Generally, our cross-sectional study showed no statistically considerable association between air pollution and hospital admissions due to respiratory manifestations and asthma attacks in children. Of the air pollution indices, only SO2 concentration was associated with respiratory-related hospital admissions but not asthma attacks.

Abstract Impaired cognitive health is the leading cause of various disabilities and disorders. Air pollution has been dramatically increasing over the last few decades and has been identified as a potential risk factor for impaired cognitive health. This study investigates the effect of air pollutants, particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ground-level ozone, on global cognitive health. The data on environmental pollutants and cognitive health were recorded from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Initially, 790 articles were identified after screening for duplicates and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 21 studies were included, and data was synthesized to get a pooled result. The overall results revealed that increased exposure to PM2.5 was positively and significantly associated with cognitive decline (OR 1.49; 95% CI 1.11, 1.99; p = 0.01). Acute lung injury (ALI) and its most severe form, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), are pulmonary conditions that cause significant morbidity and mortality. The common etiologies of these conditions include pneumonia, pulmonary contusion, fat embolism, smoke inhalation, sepsis, shock, and acute pancreatitis. Inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy are key pathophysiological mechanisms underlying ALI. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are sulfur-containing gas signaling molecules that can mitigate these pathogenic processes by modulating various signaling pathways, such as toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), extracellular signal-regulating protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), phosphatidyl inositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), thereby conferring protection against ALI. Given the limited clinical effectiveness of prevailing ALI treatments, investigation of the modulation of sulfur-containing gas signaling molecules (H2S and SO2) in ALI is imperative. This article presents an overview of the regulatory pathways of sulfur-containing gas signaling molecules in ALI animal models induced by various stimuli, such as lipopolysaccharide, gas inhalation, oleic acid, and ischemia-reperfusion. Furthermore, this study explored the therapeutic prospects of diverse H2S and SO2 donors for ALI, stemming from diverse etiologies. The current study used to prove the efficiency of Tecoma stans to sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) was at a concentration of 10 mg·m-3 which is equal to 3.82 ppm for the period from summer exposure (May - June 2023) to reduce SO2 thus reduce some gaseous pollutants that cause global warming and some air pollutants and know the effect of seasonal conditions to mitigate these pollutants. The physiological changes of the three replicates of study plant were observed through equal time periods daily for a period of seven days covered with polyethylene under controlled conditions represented by a greenhouse. The process was repeated three times between the three exposures provide rest periods for the plant for a week. During summer exposure, it was found that the concentration of flavonoids was significantly increased as compare to control (5.222 ± 0.27 mg/100 ml of extract) from 6.58 ± 0.43 to 6.24 ± 0.31 mg/100 ml of extract, but this concentration was increased after the third exposure into to 6.99 ± 0.29 mg/100 ml of extract. There was decrease in Tannins concentration after the second exposure (with concentration 1.5 ± 0.05 to 0.72 ± 0.01 µl/ml)), but this concentration was returned increased significantly to 1.36 ± 0.01 µl/ml) after the third exposure to SO2. Also in The enzyme activities for peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) demonstrated varied responses to SO2 exposure, and T. stans showing distinct patterns of enzyme activation. This study aims to evaluate the sulfur dioxide dynamics in two wines, dry white wine Fetească albă and dry red wine Fetească neagră made in Târnave vineyard, and to observe their evolution after application of Bactiless and Longevity to lower the level of SO2. The wines from 2020 harvest were produced using traditional winemaking techniques. The experimental variants were: Control, Longevity (20, 30, 40, 0, and 40 g/hL) with Bactiless (20, 35, 50, 50 and 0 g/hL). For all the samples studied in this work, it was determined a decrease concentration of free and total sulfur dioxide. The best results obtained for the Fetească albă wine was the decrease of free SO2 from 35.00 mg/L to 25.33±0.60 mg/L and total SO2 from 120.50 mg/L to 117.50 mg/L by using 50 g/hL of Bactiless (CFAV4). For the Fetească neagră wine, the best results obtained were the decrease of free SO2 from 32.50±0.29 mg/L to 14.83±0.18 mg/L and total SO2 from 85.00±0.87 mg/L to 75.00±0.86 mg/L by adding 40 g/hL of Longevity and 50 g/hL of Bactiless (CFNV3). With an allowed SO2 concentration, the evaluated wines maintained their varietal characteristics and organoleptic properties.

A novel catalytic system for radical cross‐coupling reactions based on copper and chiral Pyridyl‐bis(imidazole) (PyBim) ligands is described. It overcomes the challenges of chemoselectivity and enantioselectivity, achieving a highly enantioselective vicinal sulfonyl‐esterification reaction of alkenes involving sulfur dioxide. This strategy involves the use of earth‐abundant metal catalyst, mild reaction conditions, a broad range of substrates (84 examples), high yields (up to 97% yield), and exceptional control over enantioselectivity. The reaction system is compatible with different types of radical precursors, including O‐acylhydroxylamines, cycloketone oxime esters, aryldiazonium salts, and drug molecules. Chiral ligand PyBim is identified as particularly effective in achieving the desired high enantioselectivity. Sulfur-containing scaffolds originating from small alkyl fragments play a crucial role in various pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials. Nonetheless, their synthesis using conventional methods presents significant challenges. In this study, we introduce a practical and efficient approach that harnesses hydrogen atom transfer photocatalysis to activate volatile alkanes, such as isobutane, butane, propane, ethane, and methane. Subsequently, these nucleophilic radicals react with SO2 to yield the corresponding sulfinates. These sulfinates then serve as versatile building blocks for the synthesis of diverse sulfur-containing organic compounds, including sulfones, sulfonamides, and sulfonate esters. Our use of flow technology offers a robust, safe and scalable platform for effectively activating these challenging gaseous alkanes, facilitating their transformation into valuable sulfinates. The SO2 absorption ability of an aqueous suspension of red mud, which is waste from the Bayer process for bauxite, and the possibility of dissolution of metals using sulfurous acid are studied. It is found out that red mud can be used to neutralize sulfur dioxide of any concentration to an environmentally safe level. A statistical mathematical model is developed, and the absorption process is optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the mud is totally neutralized, and the sulfurous acid produced in the presence of an excess amount of SO2 dissolves 35% of all the aluminum in one step. Understanding the dynamics of sulfur dioxide (SO2) degassing is of primary importance for tracking temporal variations in volcanic activity. Here we introduce the novel "disk method," which aims at estimating the daily volcanic SO2 mass flux from satellite images (such as those provided by Sentinel‐5P/TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument [TROPOMI]). The method calculates a "proto‐flux" using a regression, as a function of distance, of SO2 mass integrated in a series of nested circular domains centered on a volcano. After regression, a single multiplication by plume speed suffices to deduce the SO2 mass flux, without requiring a subsequent regression. This way, a range of plume speed and plume altitude scenarios can be easily explored. Noise level in the image is simultaneously evaluated by the regression, which allows for estimating posterior uncertainties on SO2 flux and improving the level of detection for weak sources in noisy environments. A statistical test is also introduced to automatically detect occurrences of volcanic degassing, lowering the risk of false positives. Application to multi‐year time‐series at Etna (2021) and Piton de la Fournaise (2021–2023) demonstrates (a) a reliable quantification of SO2 emissions across a broad range of degassing styles (from passive degassing to effusive or paroxysmal events), and (b) a reasonable day‐to‐day correlation between SO2 flux and seismic energy. The method is distributed as an open‐source software, and is implemented in an interactive web application within the "Volcano Space Observatory Portal," facilitating near‐real‐time exploitation of the TROPOMI archive for both volcano monitoring and assessment of volcanic atmospheric hazards. The inhibition of the immune response in the tumor microenvironment by therapy regimens can impede the eradication of tumors, potentially resulting in tumor metastasis. As a non-invasive therapeutic method, radiotherapy is utilized for tumor ablation. In this study, we aimed to improve the therapeutic impact of radiotherapy and trigger an immune response by formulating a benzothiazole sulfinate (BTS)-loaded fusion liposome (BFL) nanoplatform, which was then combined with radiotherapy for anti-cancer treatment. The platelet cell membrane, equipped with distinctive surface receptors, enables BFL to effectively target tumors while evading the immune system and adhering to tumor cells. This facilitates BFL's engulfment by cancer cells, subsequently releasing BTS within them. Following the release, the BTS produces sulfur dioxide (SO2) for gas therapy, initiating the oxidation of intracellular glutathione (GSH). This process demonstrates efficacy in repairing damage post-radiotherapy, thereby achieving effective radiosensitization. It was revealed that an immune response was triggered following the enhanced radiosensitization facilitated by BFL. This approach facilitated the maturation of dendritic cell (DC) within lymph nodes, leading to an increase in the proportion of T cells in distant tumors. This resulted in significant eradication of primary tumors and inhibition of growth in distant tumors. Objective There is a risk of hydrogen sulfide（H2S） leakage in the production process of high-sulfur oil and gas wells and desulfurization units in refineries, and the efficiency of emergency disposal method mainly based on physical dilution is low, which will affect the emergency rescue. A combined process of gas capture and dry desulfurization is proposed to dispose the leaked hydrogen sulfide, and whether the introduction of air in the leaked gas will affect the safety of dry desulfurization and the performance of desulfurizers is studied. Methods By simulating the dry treatment process of leaked hydrogen sulfide, the sulfur capacity and bed temperature rise of different types of dry desulfurizers such as activated carbon, iron oxide, and zinc oxide were compared and tested, and the desulfurizer with better performance was selected. Taking the optimized desulfurizer as the research object, the effects of space velocity and air content on temperature rise, penetration sulfur capacity, desulfurization accuracy, and side reactions were investigated under different H2S content. Results The 3# desulfurizer with the highest penetration sulfur capacity was selected from 8 kinds of iron oxide desulfurizers from different manufacturers. Under the simulated operating conditions of the original particle size, the penetration sulfur capacity could reach 18.2%. The rise in desulfurizer bed temperature increased with increased hydrogen sulfide content. With the increase of space velocity and air content, it increased rapidly and then tended to be stable or even slightly decreased, and the maximum temperature rise did not exceed 40 ℃. When the air volume fraction exceeded 25%, the sulfur capacity of the desulfurizer increased by about 50%, and there was a significant negative correlation between space velocity and penetration sulfur capacity. When the space velocity was lower than 1 000 h-1, the penetration sulfur capacity exceeded 25%. The desulfurization accuracy and side reactions were not affected by the air content. There was no by-product of sulfur dioxide generating before the penetration of hydrogen sulfide and at a space velocity below 2 000 h-1. Conclusions Using a dry desulfurization process to treat leaked hydrogen sulfide would result in simultaneous desulfurization and regeneration processes, with a specific temperature rise in the bed layer and no by-product of sulfur dioxide generating, which had high safety. The addition of air had a specific improvement effect on the penetration sulfur capacity of desulfurizer. When the air volume fraction was greater than 25%, and the space velocity was lower than 1 000 h-1, it was suitable for dry method emergency response of leaked hydrogen sulfide. The results showed that the higher degree of vertical integration in GVCs is conducive to decreasing SO 2 emission intensity through the channels of imported intermediate inputs and enhancement coal-use efficiency. Besides, we construct two different instrument variables to mitigate the endogeneity problem, along with a series of robustness and heterogeneity tests. In this work a simple and rapid automated analytical method for the determination of sulfur dioxide in wines by employing a sequential automatic analyser was validated. The methodology is based on the reaction of sulfur dioxide with 5,5′-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) in an alkaline medium followed by photometric detection. The linearity of the calibration curve was excellent (R2 = 1.000) and the LOQ (2.00 mg L−1) was well suited for the monitoring of regulatory limits. The accuracy and precision were evaluated with reference materials, providing highly successful results (RSD% < 3.8 for precision and R2 = 0.99 of correlation between the obtained and declared values). The method was applied to the analysis of commercial samples of wines ensuring compliance with legislation. The results found were compared to those obtained with the spectrophotometric method recommended for beers, implemented in a flow system, showing that there are no statistical differences between them (α ≤ 0.05). When compared with conventional methods, the proposed methodology showed to be fast, with minimum handling of the sample and small sample and reagents volume requirement, which together with a minimum maintenance, involves a considerable reduction in laboratory costs. Exploring the Venusian lower atmosphere is crucial for studying the atmospheric circulation, surface‐atmosphere interactions, and origin and evolution of the Venusian atmosphere and climate. In this study, we investigate the theoretical capabilities of a downward‐looking passive microwave sounder placed in low Venus orbit to measure the temperature, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and gaseous sulfuric acid (H2SO4(g)) profiles. A nonlinear iterative retrieval algorithm combining a radiative transfer (RT) model and an optimal‐estimation‐based inversion algorithm is established. With the RT model adapted to the Venusian atmosphere, simulations under different atmospheric conditions are performed to optimize the selection of frequency channels. The achievable altitude coverage, vertical resolution and corresponding expected precision of the temperature, SO2 and H2SO4(g) retrievals from the multi‐channel brightness temperature measurements are quantified via retrieval simulations. The temperature can be retrieved from the surface of Venus to an altitude of ∼61 km with a precision of 1–3.5 K and a vertical resolution of 6–15 km. A precision of 10%–35% is expected for SO2 in the ∼12–64 km altitude range and with a vertical resolution of 8–19 km. H2SO4(g) can be retrieved in the ∼36–54 km altitude range with a precision of 10%–30% and a vertical resolution of 6–13 km. In this paper, the influence of SO2 on the performances of selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) of NH3 on Cr-Ce mixed oxide catalysts had been disclosed. Experimental results revealed that the existence of SO2 could greatly suppress the unselective catalytic oxidation of ammonia over Cr-Ce mixed oxide catalysts with strong redox capacity, though the ammonia conversion rate was somewhat lowered after SO2 introduction. As such, near or above 90% ammonia conversion and excellent N2 selectivity within 350–450 °C could be achieved on Cr10Ce sample after 20 h reaction running in the presence of 350 ppm SO2. Characterization results indicated that SO2 could induce the formation of surface sulfates on Cr10Ce catalysts and enhance its surface acidity, which would inhibit the over-oxidation of NH3. More importantly, the bulk-like sulfation of Cr10Ce samples was damped in the presence of SO2 compared to pure CeO2, which allowed certain active oxygens participating in NH3-SCO reaction. DFT results also confirmed that the adsorbed SO2 would preferentially interact with the oxygens around the interface of CeO2 and Cr2O3, thereby preventing the retained active oxygens from being further sulfation. In classical methods of wine production, amino acids play a critical role, as they are fundamental to all types of fermentation. Beyond their consumption in fermentative processes, amino acids undergo several transformations, such as decarboxylation, which produces biogenic amines. These biogenic amines can increase under certain conditions, such as the presence of spoilage bacteria or during malolactic fermentation. Alternative methods of vinification were applied, using sulfur dioxide as a preservative (+SO2) and methods without added sulfites. Alternative methods of vinification were applied using sulfur dioxide as a preservative (+SO2) and methods without added sulfite (−SO2). Monitoring was conducted for Cabernet Sauvignon red (CS), Cabernet Sauvignon rosé (CSR), Fetească regală still (FR), and Fetească regală frizzante (FRF). Alternative procedures employed the use of Pichia kluyveri for its ability to block the oxidation reactions of grapes, malolactic fermentation for all wines without sulfur dioxide (−SO2) to ensure superior stability, and the use of several tannin mixtures to avoid oxidation reactions. Correlations were considered between the amino acids and biogenic amines that have a direct relation through decarboxylation or deamination. The pH of the wines, total acidity, and volatile acidity as principal factors of microbiological wine evolution remained constant. The highest mean concentrations of the detected biogenic amines were putrescine at 23.71 ± 4.82 mg/L (CSRSO2), tyramine at 14.62 ± 1.50 mg/L (FR-SO2), cadaverine at 4.36 ± 1.19 mg/L (CS-SO2), histamine at 2.66 ± 2.19 mg/L (FR + SO2), and spermidine at 9.78 ± 7.19 mg/L (FR + SO2). The wine conditions ensured the inhibition of decarboxylases, but some correlations were found with the corresponding amino acids such as glutamine (r = −0.885, p < 0.05) (CSR-SO2), tyrosine (r = −0,858, p < 0.05) (FR-SO2), lysine (r = −0.906, p < 0.05) (FR-SO2), and histamine (r = −0.987, p < 0.05) (CSR-SO2). Multivariate analysis was performed, and no statistical differences were found between samples with (+SO2) and without added sulfur dioxide (−SO2). The vinification conditions ensured the wines' stability and preservation and the conditions of producing biogenic amines at the lowest levels in order to not interfere with the olfactive and gustative characteristics. Every year, metallurgical plants emit hundreds of thousands of tons of harmful substances into the atmosphere. The remote sensing of flue gases from the chimneys of metallurgical plants is an urgent task for both industrial enterprises themselves and the enviromental control systems of nearby settlements. In this study, based on the results of the remote optical monitoring of emissions from chimneys of metallurgical plants of the PJSC "MMC 'Norilsk Nickel's'," Polar Division, the concentration of sulfur dioxide in flue gases is estimated. The measurements are carried out using infrared (IR) Fourier transform spectrometers operating in the 7–13 µm range with a spectral resolution of 4 cm–1. A new technology for remote optical sensing in the passive mode of flue gases from metallurgical plants is proposed, including measurements both on cross sections of chimneys and plumes. Featured Application: This study is aimed at the detection of sulfur dioxide concentration in the real environment. Due to the vast territory of China and the large temperature difference span between the north and the south, the current sulfur dioxide detection devices find it difficult to meet the requirements of portability, low-cost delivery, and temperature adaptability. A reliable real-time monitoring device and detection algorithm for sulfur dioxide concentration using PMT are proposed. Air is the environmental foundation for human life and production, and its composition changes are closely related to human activities. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the main atmospheric pollutants, mainly derived from the combustion of fossil fuels. But SO2 is a trace gas in the atmosphere, and its concentration may be less than one part per billion (ppb). This paper is based on the principle of photoluminescence and uses a photomultiplier tube (PMT) as a photoelectric converter to develop a device for real-time detection of SO2 concentration in the atmosphere. This paper focuses on the impact of noise interference on weak electrical signals and uses wavelet transform to denoise the signals. At the same time, considering that the photoelectric system is susceptible to temperature changes, a multi parameter fitting model is constructed, and a BP neural network is used to further process the signal, separating the real data from the original data. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important gaseous air pollutants and the chemical index of sulfur oxides (SOx). SO2 is one of the six criteria pollutants in the air quality index (AQI). SO2 can be emitted by natural and anthropogenic sources. Although efforts have been made to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions worldwide, this pollutant and its adverse effects remain a major concern, especially in developing countries. The aim of this study was the investigated the effects of sulfur dioxide inhalation on human health. This narrative review was done based on the literature published from 2000 to 2022 through PubMed, Springer, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases. In this study, was done screened first based on the abstract and Final assessment done based on the full text of the article. Finally, 38 articles were selected for inclusion in the study. The results of this study showed that sulfur dioxide has adverse health effects on the human respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems and causes type 2 diabetes and non-accidental deaths. Although some evidence suggests that sulfur dioxide in given concentrations has no adverse health effect, its synergistic effects in combination with other air pollutants may be significant. Among the most important practical results of this study can be mentioned to increase the health awareness of the general public, help the politicians of the health sector in making decisions in the health field, creating awareness among polluting producing units and industries and efforts to reduce the emission of Sulfur dioxide. Noxious gases such as sulfur-containing compounds can inflict several different adverse effects on human health even when present at extremely low concentrations. The accurate detection of these gases at sub-parts per million levels is imperative, particularly in fields where maintaining optimal air quality is crucial. In this study, we harnessed the capabilities of nanostructured metal-oxide semiconducting materials to detect sulfur dioxide, since they have been extensively explored starting from the last decades for their effectiveness in monitoring toxic gases. We systematically characterized the sensing performance of seven chemoresistive devices. As a result, the SnO2:Au sensor demonstrated to be the most promising candidate for sulfur dioxide detection, owing to its highly sensitivity (0.5–10 ppm), humidity-independent behavior (30 RH% onwards), and selectivity vs. different gases at an operating temperature of 400 °C. This comprehensive investigation facilitates a detailed performance comparison to other devices explored for the SO2 sensing, supporting advancements in gas detection technology for enhanced workplace and environmental safety. Heterogeneous uptake of SO2 on mineral dust is a predominant formation pathway of sulfates, whereas the contribution of photo-induced SO2 oxidation to sulfates on the dust interfaces still remains unclear. Here, we investigated heterogeneous photochemical reactions of SO2 on five mineral oxides (SiO2 , kaolinite, Al2O3 , MgO , and CaO) without photocatalytic activity. Light enhanced the uptake of SO2 , and its enhancement effects negatively depended on the basicity of mineral oxides. The initial uptake coefficient (γ0,BET) and the steady-state uptake coefficient (γs,BET) of SO2 positively relied on light intensity, relative humidity (RH), and O2 content, while they exhibited a negative relationship with the initial SO2 concentration. Rapid sulfate formation during photo-induced heterogeneous reactions of SO2 with all mineral oxides was confirmed to be ubiquitous, and H2O and O2 played key roles in the conversion of SO2 to sulfates. In particular, triplet states of SO2 (3SO2) were suggested to be the trigger for photochemical sulfate formation. The coefficients of the carbon dioxide pressure-induced line shift of sulfur dioxide in the ν1 + ν3 band with rotational quantum numbers J from 0 to 70 and Ka from 0 to 20 at room temperature were calculated. The data were obtained by the semi-empirical method based on the semi-classical broadening theory and modified by including a correction factor in the calculation scheme.
