The solubility of long-chain lithium polysulfides (nominally Li2S8) in sulfolane and sulfolane solutions of lithium perchlorate has been studied. It was found that the solubility of sulfur in the species of lithium octasulfide is significantly, by one to two orders of magnitude, higher than the solubility of elemental sulfur. The rate of Li2S8 formation and its solubility decreases, as the concentration of LiClO4 increases. The absorption spectra of Li2S8 are similar to the absorption spectra of elemental sulfur except for the position of the long-wavelength absorption bands, which have a significant bathochromic shift.
