Tunneling spectroscopy is an important tool for the study of both real-space and momentum-space electronic structure of correlated electron systems. However, such measurements often yield noisy data. Machine learning provides techniques to reduce the noise in post-processing, but traditionally requires noiseless examples which are unavailable for scientific experiments. In this work we adapt the unsupervised Noise2Noise and self-supervised Noise2Self algorithms, which allow for denoising without clean examples, to denoise quasiparticle interference data. We first apply the techniques on simulated data, and demonstrate that we are able to reduce the noise while preserving finer details, all while outperforming more traditional denoising techniques. We then apply the Noise2Self technique to experimental data from an overdoped cuprate ((Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$) sample. Denoising enhances the clarity of quasiparticle interference patterns, and helps to obtain a precise extraction of electronic structure parameters. The cuprate high-temperature superconductors exhibit many unexplained electronic phases, but it was often thought that the superconductivity at sufficiently high doping is governed by conventional mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory[1]. However, recent measurements show that the number of paired electrons (the superfluid density) vanishes when the transition temperature Tc goes to zero[2], in contradiction to expectation from BCS theory. The origin of this anomalous vanishing is unknown. Our scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements in the overdoped regime of the (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CuO6+{\delta} high-temperature superconductor show that it is due to the emergence of puddled superconductivity, featuring nanoscale superconducting islands in a metallic matrix[3,4]. Our measurements further reveal that this puddling is driven by gap filling, while the gap itself persists beyond the breakdown of superconductivity. The important implication is that it is not a diminishing pairing interaction that causes the breakdown of superconductivity. Unexpectedly, the measured gap-to-filling correlation also reveals that pair-breaking by disorder does not play a dominant role and that the mechanism of superconductivity in overdoped cuprate superconductors is qualitatively different from conventional mean-field theory.

It has been hypothesized that the variation of the critical currents in Nb/Al-AlO$_x$/Nb junctions is due to, among other effects, the presence of grain boundaries in the system. Motivated by this, we examine the effect of grain boundaries on the critical current of a Josephson junction. We assume that the hopping amplitudes are dependent on the interatomic distance, and derive a physically realistic model of distance-dependent hopping amplitudes. We find that the presence of a grain boundary and associated disorder is responsible for a very large drop in the critical current relative to a clean system. We also find that when a tunnel barrier is present, grain boundaries cause substantial variations in the critical currents due to the disordered hoppings near the tunnel barrier. New developments in scanning tunneling spectroscopy now allow for the spatially resolved measurement of the Josephson critical current $I_c$ between a tip and a superconducting sample, a nearly direct measurement of the true superconducting order parameter. However, it is unclear how these $I_c$ measurements are correlated with previous estimates of the spectral gap taken from differential conductance measurements. In particular, recent such experiments on an iron-based superconductor found almost no correlation between $I_c$ and the spectral gap obtained from differential conductance $g=dI/dV$ spectra, reporting instead a more significant correlation between $I_c$ and the the coherence-peak height. Here we point out that the correlation--or the lack thereof--between these various quantities can be naturally explained by the effect of disorder on unconventional superconductivity. Using large scale numerical simulations of a BCS $d$-wave pair Hamiltonian with many-impurity potentials, we observe that "substitutional" disorder models with weak pointlike impurities lead to a situation in which the true superconducting order parameter and $I_c$ are both uncorrelated with the spectral gap from $dI/dV$ measurements and highly correlated with the coherence-peak heights. The underlying mechanism appears to be the disorder-induced transfer of spectral weight away from the coherence peaks. On the other hand, smooth impurity potentials with a length scale larger than the lattice constant lead to a large positive correlation between the true superconducting order parameter and the spectral gap, in addition to a large correlation between the order parameter and the coherence-peak height. Complete theoretical understanding of the most complex superconductors requires a detailed knowledge of the symmetry of the superconducting energy-gap $\Delta_\mathbf{k}^\alpha$, for all momenta $\mathbf{k}$ on the Fermi surface of every band $\alpha$. While there are a variety of techniques for determining $|\Delta_\mathbf{k}^\alpha|$, no general method existed to measure the signed values of $\Delta_\mathbf{k}^\alpha$. Recently, however, a new technique based on phase-resolved visualization of superconducting quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns centered on a single non-magnetic impurity atom, was introduced. In principle, energy-resolved and phase-resolved Fourier analysis of these images identifies wavevectors connecting all k-space regions where $\Delta_\mathbf{k}^\alpha$ has the same or opposite sign. But use of a single isolated impurity atom, from whose precise location the spatial phase of the scattering interference pattern must be measured is technically difficult. Here we introduce a generalization of this approach for use with multiple impurity atoms, and demonstrate its validity by comparing the $\Delta_\mathbf{k}^\alpha$ it generates to the $\Delta_\mathbf{k}^\alpha$ determined from single-atom scattering in FeSe where $s_{\pm}$ energy-gap symmetry is established. Finally, to exemplify utility, we use the multi-atom technique on LiFeAs and find scattering interference between the hole-like and electron-like pockets as predicted for $\Delta_\mathbf{k}^\alpha$ of opposite sign.

Determining the exact pairing symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in candidate unconventional superconductors remains an important challenge. Recently a new method, based on phase sensitive quasiparticle interference measurements, was developed to identify gap sign changes in isotropic multiband systems. Here we extend this approach to the single-band and multiband nodal $d$-wave superconducting cases relevant, respectively, for the cuprates and likely for the infinite-layer nickelate superconductors. Combining analytical and numerical calculations, we show that the antisymmetrized correction to the tunneling density of states due to nonmagnetic impurities in the Born and intermediate-scattering limits shows characteristic features for sign-changing and sign-preserving scattering wavevectors, as well as for the momentum-integrated quantity. Furthermore, using a realistic approach accounting for the Wannier orbitals, we model scanning tunneling microscopy data of $\text{Bi}_2\text{Sr}_2\text{CaCu}_2\text{O}_{8+\delta}$, which should allow the comparison of our theory with experimental data., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

We investigate theoretically the origins of observed variations in the critical currents of Nb/Al-AlO$_x$/Nb Josephson junctions in terms of various types of disorder. We consider the following disorder sources: vacancies within the Al layer; thickness variations in the AlO$_x$ layer; and "pinholes" (i.e., point contacts) within the AlO$_x$ layer. The calculations are all performed by solving the microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian self-consistently. It is found that a small concentration of vacancies within the Al layer is sufficient to suppress the critical current, while the presence of a small number of thick regions of the oxide layer induces a similar effect as well. The pinhole scenario is found to result in anomalous behavior that resembles neither that of a pure tunnel junction nor that of an SNS junction, but a regime that interpolates between these two limits. The cuprate high-temperature superconductors are known to host a wide array of effects due to interactions and disorder. In this work, we look at some of the consequences of these effects which can be visualized by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. These interaction and disorder effects can be incorporated into a mean-field description by means of a self-energy appearing in the Green's function. We first examine the quasiparticle scattering interference spectra in the superconducting state at optimal doping as temperature is increased. Assuming agreement with angle-resolved photoemission experiments which suggest that the scattering rate depends on temperature, resulting in the filling of the $d$-wave gap, we find that the peaks predicted by the octet model become progressively smeared as temperature is increased. When the scattering rate is of the same order of magnitude as the superconducting gap, the spectral function shows Fermi-arc-like patterns, while the power spectrum of the local density of states shows the destruction of the octet-model peaks. We next consider the normal state properties of the optimally-doped cuprates. We model this by adding a marginal Fermi liquid self-energy to the normal-state propagator, and consider the dependence of the QPI spectra on frequency, temperature, and doping. We demonstrate that the MFL self-energy leads to a smearing of the caustics appearing in the normal-state QPI power spectrum as either temperature or frequency is increased at fixed doping. The smearing is found to be more prominent in the MFL case than in an ordinary Fermi liquid. We also consider the case of a marginal Fermi liquid with a strongly momentum-dependent self-energy which gives rise to a visible "nodal-antinodal" dichotomy at the normal state, and discuss how the spectra as seen in ARPES and STS differ from both an isotropic metal and a broadened $d$-wave superconductor., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, published version, includes minor changes

We explore the effects of various kinds of random disorder on the quasiparticle density of states of two-dimensional d-wave superconductors using an exact real-space method, incorporating realistic details known about the cuprates. Random on-site energy and pointlike unitary impurity models are found to give rise to a vanishing DOS at the Fermi energy for narrow distributions and low concentrations, respectively, and lead to a finite, but suppressed, DOS at unrealistically large levels of disorder. Smooth disorder arising from impurities located away from the copper-oxide planes meanwhile gives rise to a finite DOS at realistic impurity concentrations. For the case of smooth disorder whose average potential is zero, a resonance is found at zero energy for the quasiparticle DOS at large impurity concentrations. We discuss the implications of these results on the computed low-temperature specific heat, the behavior of which we find is strongly affected by the amount of disorder present in the system. We also compute the localization length as a function of disorder strength for various types of disorder and find that intermediate- and high-energy states are quasi-extended for low disorder, and that states near the Fermi energy are strongly localized and have a localization length that exhibits an unusual dependence on the amount of disorder. We revisit the interpretation of quasiparticle scattering interference in cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors. This phenomenon has been very successful in reconstructing the dispersions of d-wave Bogoliubov excitations, but the successful identification and interpretation of QPI in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) experiments rely on theoretical results obtained for the case of isolated impurities. We introduce a highly flexible technique to simulate STS measurements by computing the local density of states using real-space Green's functions defined on two-dimensional lattices with as many as 100,000 sites. We focus on the following question: to what extent can the experimental results be reproduced when various forms of distributed disorder are present? We consider randomly distributed point-like impurities, smooth "Coulombic" disorder, and disorder arising from random on-site energies and superconducting gaps. We find an apparent paradox: the QPI peaks in the Fourier-transformed local density of states appear to be sharper and better defined in experiment than those seen in our simulations. We arrive at a no-go result for smooth-potential disorder since this does not reproduce the QPI peaks associated with large-momentum scattering. An ensemble of point-like impurities gets closest to experiment, but this goes hand in hand with impurity cores that are not seen in experiment. We also study the effects of possible measurement artifacts (the "fork mechanism"), which turn out to be of relatively minor consequence. We perform an analysis of the combined effects of geometry and a magnetic field for the case of a charged particle on a helicoid. The effective quantum potentials for a charged spinless particle confined on a helicoid for two simple magnetic field configurations are derived. These potentials depend nontrivially on the surface curvature and the external magnetic field. We find that the qualitative behavior of the effective potential can be altered by changing the strength of the applied magnetic field. The application of a magnetic field results in effective potentials that are either repulsive or attractive, depending on the magnitude of the magnetic field and the angular momentum of the particle. Finally, for the case of effective potentials that have a minimum, we also obtain approximate expressions for the energy levels valid when the particle is near a minimum, and these are found to be similar in form to the energy levels of a particle in a harmonic oscillator potential., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures; fixed Fig. 2
