Abstract Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) are a significant food crop cultivated around the world. Caffeic acid (CA) can enhance plant growth by promoting antioxidant activity and stimulating root development, contributing to overall plant health and vigor. Cobalt sulfate (CoSO4) boosts plant growth by promoting nitrogen (N) fixation, healthier root development, and chlorophyll synthesis, enhancing photosynthesis and overall plant health. Nanoparticle-coated urea (NPCU) improves nutrient uptake, promoting plant growth efficiency and reducing environmental impact. This study investigates the effects of combining CA, CoSO4, and NPCU as amendments on potatoes with and without NPCU. Four treatments, control, 20 μM CA, 0.15 mg/L CoSO4, and 20 μM CA + 0.15 mg/L CoSO4 with and without NPCU, were applied in four replications using a completely randomized design. Results demonstrate that the combination of CA + CoSO4 with NPCU led to an increase in potato stem length (~ 6%), shoot dry weight (~ 15%), root dry weight (~ 9%), and leaf dry weight (~ 49%) compared to the control in nutrient stress. There was a significant rise in chlorophyll a (~ 27%), chlorophyll b (~ 37%), and total chlorophyll (~ 28%) over the control under nutrient stress also showed the potential of CA + CoSO4 with NPCU. In conclusion, the findings suggest that applying CA + CoSO4 with NPCU is a strategy for alleviating potato nutrient stress.

Abstract Gene expression levels in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and other plant species are determined by the promoters, which directly control phenotypic characteristics. As essential components of genes, promoters regulate the intensity, location, and timing of gene expression. They contain numerous regulatory elements and serve as binding sites for proteins that modulate transcription, including transcription factors and RNA polymerases. Genome editing can alter promoter sequences, thereby precisely modifying the expression patterns of specific genes, and ultimately affecting the morphology, quality, and resistance of rice. This paper summarizes research on rice promoter editing conducted in recent years, focusing on improvements in yield, heading date, quality, and disease resistance. It is expected to inform the application of promoter editing and encourage further research and development in crop genetic improvement with promote.

Abstract The development of self-preserving personal care cosmetics represents a significant advancement in the cosmetics industry, offering safer and more natural alternatives to consumers. This study focused on the preparation of such formulations using multifunctional ingredients along with other cosmetic components. Five unique multifunctional ingredients (MFIs) were identified based on their antimicrobial properties: sodium coco PG-dimonium chloride phosphate, ricinoleic acid, palmitoleic acid, raspberry ketone, and sorbitan caprylate. Through meticulous experimentation, 150 combinations of MFIs were prepared and tested to understand their synergistic actions. From these trials, three synergistic antimicrobial compositions were determined: sodium coco PG-dimonium chloride phosphate: ricinoleic acid: raspberry ketone in the ratios 1:6.3:6.3 and 1:6.3:15.7. Sodium coco PG-dimonium chloride phosphate: palmitoleic acid: sorbitan caprylate at a ratio of 1:12.5:37.5. These synergistic compositions exhibited enhanced antimicrobial efficacy compared with their individual components, as evidenced by their lower Minimum Inhibitory Concentration values. Incorporating these formulations into three distinct personal care cosmetic products, including a color protection shampoo, body wash shower gel, and skin-lightening cream, the study further validated their effectiveness. A Preservation Challenge Test study revealed that all three antimicrobial compositions successfully preserved the cosmetic formulations for up to 28 days. This method of product preservation not only ensures consumer safety and stability but also reduces the need for potentially conventional preservatives. In conclusion, the appropriate use of multifunctional ingredients in combination with meticulous formulation techniques has led to the successful development of self-preserving personal care cosmetics. These formulations offer a promising avenue for the cosmetic industry, catering to the rising demand for natural, effective, and consumer-friendly cosmetic products.

Abstract Five dimethylamino-based chalcone derivatives (AC) were synthesized and evaluated for their inhibition degree against monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes. All AC compounds showed better inhibitory activity against MAO-B than that against MAO-A. AC4 showed the highest inhibitory ability with an IC50 value of 0.020 µM, similar to that of a reference drug safinamide (IC50 = 0.019 µM) against MAO-B, followed by AC1 (IC50 = 0.068 µM) and AC3 (IC50 = 0.083 µM). Substituent -F in ring A (AC4) increased the MAO-B inhibition, followed by -H (AC1), -Br (AC3), and -Cl (AC2). The selectivity index (SI) value of AC4 was high (SI = 82.00) as well as other compounds (44.41 to 98.15). AC4 was found to be a reversible inhibitor as confirmed through analysis using the dialysis method. Interestingly, AC4 was observed to be a noncompetitive MAO-B inhibitor with a rare case and with Ki values of 0.011 ± 0.0036 µM. These experiments confirmed that AC4 is a reversible and potent selective inhibitor of MAO-B. Molecular docking experiments revealed that AC4 showed the highest inhibitory activity with a docking score (-9.510 kcal/mol). A study using molecular dynamics modeling revealed that the protein–ligand complex was more stable. It was observed that AC4 was non-cytotoxic in the study using L929 cell line. In conclusion, compound AC4 shows promise as a MAO-B inhibitor.

Abstract The plant-available soil phosphorus rate and methods for applying phosphatic fertilizer and soil P-fixation capacity are critical factors for lower cotton productivity in Southern Punjab, Pakistan. Hence, a two-year study was conducted in Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI), Multan, Pakistan, to examine the effects of various P rates and application methods on cotton crop output during the growing seasons of 2014 and 2015. Phosphorus was applied in four rates (0, 40, 80, and 120 kg ha−1 P2O5) using broadcast, band application, and fertigation methods. Results indicated that the impact of P rates was statistically significant on plant height, the number of nodes, monopodial and sympodial branches, leaf area index, harvest index, and seed cotton yield. The greater P application (120 kg P2O5 ha−1) had a better effect on cotton productivity than the lower application rates (0, 40, and 80 kg P2O5 ha−1). The band application responded better on nodes plant−1, sympodial branches plant−1, boll weight, leaf area index, lint yield, and harvest during the growing season 2015. Therefore, by adopting the band application coupled with 120 kg P2O5 ha−1 rather than the conventional method of broadcast, productivity of cotton crops could be increased.

Abstract Arsenic (As) contamination is a major environmental pollutant that adversely affects plant physiological processes and can hinder nutrients and water availability. Such conditions ultimately resulted in stunted growth, low yield, and poor plant health. Using rhizobacteria and composted biochar (ECB) can effectively overcome this problem. Rhizobacteria have the potential to enhance plant growth by promoting nutrient uptake, producing growth hormones, and suppressing diseases. Composted biochar can enhance plant growth by improving aeration, water retention, and nutrient cycling. Its porous structure supports beneficial microorganisms, increasing nutrient uptake and resilience to stressors, ultimately boosting yields while sequestering carbon. Therefore, the current study was conducted to investigate the combined effect of previously isolated Bacillus faecalis (B. faecalis) and ECB as amendments on maize cultivated under different As levels (0, 300, 600 mg As/kg soil). Four treatments (control, 0.5% composted biochar (0.5ECB), B. faecalis, and 0.5ECB + B. faecalis) were applied in four replications following a completely randomized design. Results showed that the 0.5ECB + B. faecalis treatment led to a significant rise in maize plant height (~ 99%), shoot length (~ 55%), root length (~ 82%), shoot fresh (~ 87%), and shoot dry weight (~ 96%), root fresh (~ 97%), and dry weight (~ 91%) over the control under 600As stress. There was a notable increase in maize chlorophyll a (~ 99%), chlorophyll b (~ 81%), total chlorophyll (~ 94%), and shoot N, P, and K concentration compared to control under As stress, also showing the potential of 0.5ECB + B. faecalis treatment. Consequently, the findings suggest that applying 0.5ECB + B. faecalis is a strategy for alleviating As stress in maize plants.

The current sea monitoring equipments are being used for a variety of purposes around the world. Currently used vehicles have some drawbacks. The first is the high fuel cost. The Vehicle engines cost more fuel as they have to release more power and environment and pollution. As well as not being able to stay under the sea for long days, there will often be a need for vehicles to come to the surface to refuel. The second is the vibrations and noise of these vehicles. The vibrations caused by these can be detrimental to the biodiversity of the ocean. Also, the noise makes it easier for enemies to identify our vehicles. Similarly when these vehicles go under water, water waves form on the surface. With this in mind, radar can detect what a vehicle under the sea looks like. In this paper, an artificial intelligence based microbiological model was proposed to monitor the sea level. With this biological model can greatly reduce fuels. It can get more capacity than normal vehicles. As fuel consumption decreases, so it does environmental pollution and since it operates quietly and without high vibrations, there is no threat to the biodiversity of the ocean.

Bovine colostrum is the initial milk produced after birth that contains high levels of immunoglobulins and antimicrobial peptides. This study examined the production of bovine colostrum powder using two methods including spray- and freeze-drying. Spray-drying involves quickly drying a liquid or slurry with hot gas, while freeze-drying is a low-temperature dehydration process that preserves the product by freezing it and at reduced pressure. The aim was to compare the effectiveness of spray-drying versus freeze-drying in producing colostrum powder, focusing on protein and defensive protein content. The freeze-drying sample contained higher levels of protein and defensive proteins (IgG and IgA) compared to spray-drying. The DPPH value was high in freeze-dried samples, while higher values of FRAP, TPC, and ABTS were found in spray-dried samples. Microbiological analysis indicated freeze drying generally yielding lower counts. Sensory evaluation suggested that spray-dried colostrum scored higher for flavor and aroma, while freeze-dried samples were preferred in appearance. Overall, the study underscored the distinction between spray=drying and freeze-drying in producing bovine colostrum powder, with implications for nutritional content and sensory attributes.

The pharmaceutical research sector’s inability to develop new drugs has made it challenging to combat microbial resistance. Secondary metabolites from plant extracts have been identified as potential protective agents against multi-drug-resistant bacteria. This study aimed to analyze hydro-ethanol extracts’ antioxidant and antimicrobial activities from various parts of the Zahidi date (whole fruit, pit powder, and flesh). Phytochemical screening of phenolic and flavonoid compounds was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total phenolic and flavonoid compounds were extracted at their maximum levels, 71.89 mg/100 g and 843.06 mg/100 g, respectively, using EoH 60%. The whole fruit had the highest concentration of flavonoid quercetin (0.83 μg/g) and phenolic compoundsinapic acid (20.03 μg/g) at the same concentration. The findings from the broth micro-dilution method showed that the whole fruit had the strongest antimicrobial effects at 60% EoHagainst Salmonella typhi (30 mg/ml), Helicobacter pylori (27 mg/ml), Escherichia coli (22 mg/ml), and Staphylococcus aureus (44 mg/ml). Zahidi whole fruit extracts showed higher antioxidant potential at EoH 60% using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging potential (78%) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed a significant negative correlation between antioxidant activity and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Evidence from this study highlights the considerable antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Zahidi date fruit, suggesting its potential use in producing natural drugs and value-added foods to counteract contagious diseases.

The objective of this research was to check the effect of prebiotics extracted from citrus peels on the growth of both probiotic bacteria i.e. Lactobacillus reuteri and Bifidobacterium and enteric bacteria i.e. Escherichia coli in a milk-based model. For this purpose, the prebiotic from citrus peels was extracted using ultrasound-assisted extraction and their prebiotic activity scores were calculated for two probiotic bacterial strains i.e. Lactobacillus reuteri and Bifidobacterium. Afterwards, their growth patterns were studied in a milk-based model in different concentrations of prebiotics in individual and co-culture systems of both probiotic and enteric bacteria. The results showed significant effect of prebiotic concentration on the growth of bacteria supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria and hindering the growth of E. coli. This effect was more pronounced when enteric bacteria (E. coli) were co-cultured with probiotic bacteria i.e. L. reuteri and Bifidobacterium. Similarly, the growth of E. coli was hindered when grown in co-culture of L. reuteri, Bifidobacterium and E. coli. Conclusively, the citrus peel prebiotic was found to modulate the growth of probiotic bacteria while hindering the growth of enteric bacteria.

ABSTRACTThe citrus processing industry generates around 50% fruit waste, encompassing peels, pulp, seeds, and other residues. Citrus peel, among these by-products, contains significant amounts of bioactive compounds, representing a sustainable and renewable source of phenolics. In this context, the present study was conducted to probe phytochemical profile and antioxidant potency of orange peel extracts. Moreover, the quantification of hesperidin and nobiletin was carried out using HPLC. The extracts were obtained using water and 50% aqueous-methanol and aqueous-ethanol, separately alongside varying time intervals, i.e. 30, 45 and 60 min. The obtained extracts were then investigated for their phytochemical and antioxidant profile. Afterwards, three best treatments, one from each extracts (aqueous-ethanol, methanol, and water), were chosen based on their phytochemical profiling. The phytochemical analyses and in vitro antioxidant assays showed the highest total phenolics (2010 mg GAE/100 g), flavonoids (90 mg/100 g), and flavonols (2.2 mg/100 g) in methanolic extracts obtained at 60 min. Likewise, the highest DPPH (60.55%), antioxidant activity (51.7 %), FRAP (13.6 mg TE/g), and ABTS (7.4 µmol TE/g) were also attributed to methanolic extract of orange peel obtained at 60 min except for antioxidant activity which was obtained at 30 min. Likewise, HPLC analysis depicted maximum content of hesperidin and nobiletin (133.70 and 8.50 mg/g) in methanol extract as compared to ethanol (98.80 and 5.50 mg/g) and water (61.90 and 1.25 mg/g), correspondingly. It was concluded that aqueous-methanol could be used as solvent of choice for isolation of orange peel flavonoids with extraction duration of 60 min. Flavonoid and antioxidant levels in orange peel extracts are significantly influenced by extraction time and solvent type.

ABSTRACTFoods with higher bioactive activities are being sought as a potential tool to prevent lifestyle-related disorders. In this context, germinated foods are preferred over conventional foods as they are rich in health promoting moieties. The current research was planned to assess the germination-induced modifications in physicochemical and bioactive profile of black chickpea (Cicer arietinum). For this purpose, black chickpeas (desi) were soaked for 12 h and germinated. The germinated black chickpeas were recovered after 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h of germination, separately, and their physicochemical and antioxidant profiles were studied. The phytochemical profiling of the germinated black chickpea revealed that germination time significantly influenced the chemical composition of black chickpea. It was observed that the phytochemical contents of the germinated chickpeas increased with an increase in germination time. However, the flavonoids such as rutin, luteolin, kaempferol, and quercetin were decreased, but isorhamnetin was increased as the germination time was extended. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity quantified by DPPH and ABTS activity of germinated chickpeas also increased with an increase in germination time. The highest content of DPPH antioxidant activity was observed at the 72 h of germination, while the highest concentration of ABTS was observed at the fourth day of germination. Conclusively, extended germination for 120 h can negatively influence the phytochemical and antioxidant profile of black chickpea, whereas optimum germination for 72 h was found satisfactory.

Abstract Background Small-secreted peptides are increasingly recognized as a novel class of intracellular signal molecules, playing crucial roles in plant growth and development. However, the precise role and mechanism governed by peptides containing Tyrosine Sulfation (PSY) are still under investigation. Currently, there is a lack of accessible information concerning the PSY gene family in wheat. Results Therefore, in this investigation, we identified 29 PSY genes in Triticum aestivum, with the aim of unraveling their significance in plant development processes and their response to a variety of stress conditions. Phylogenetic analysis showed that TaPSY genes clustered into five groups. Additionally, an analysis of the gene structure of TaPSYs displayed a conserved evolutionary path. The syntenic relationship demonstrated the 69 orthologous gene pairs in T. dicoccoides, Ae. tauschii, T. turgidum, and H. vulgare, respectively. Furthermore, the Ka/Ks analysis indicated that TaPSY genes have experienced purifying selection during their evolutionary processes. The promoters of TaPSY genes were found to contain numerous CAREs, and these elements are known to perform essential functions in various development processes, phytohormone responses, as well as defense and stress mechanisms. In addition, the identification of potential miRNAs targeting TaPSY genes was followed by an examination of their expression patterns across various tissues. Among the 29 TaPSY genes, twenty miRNAs were discovered to target eighteen of them. Moreover, TaPSY genes displayed a distinct expression across different tissues and stress conditions. Conclusions Hence, these discoveries offer a significant reference point for forthcoming molecular investigations and hold promise for bolstering wheat yield and stress resilience through targeted genetic enhancements and strategic breeding approaches. Employing high-resolution Landsat data for Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) assessments, integrated with climate variables from CHIRPS and ERA5 datasets, our approach leverages Google Earth Engine (GEE) for efficient processing. It combines statistical methodologies, including linear regression, Mann–Kendall trend tests, Sen's slope estimator, partial correlation, and cross wavelet transform analyses. Allelo-chemical has been emerged as an important play to induce the abiotic stress tolerance. The experiment included three components: different levels of salinity stress (SS: control, 6 dS m-1, 12 dS m-1), seed priming with moringa leaf extract (MLE: 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0%), and saltwater-tolerant and salinity-sensitive wheat cultivars (Faisalabad-2008, Galaxy-2013). Results showed that salinity lowered photosynthetic pigments, photosynthesis, transpiration, internal carbon, and stomatal conductance, while causing poor and delayed germination, inconsistent seedling growth, and increased hydrogen peroxide accumulation. However, hydro-priming and MLE priming enhanced emergence dynamics, growth, biochemical and enzymatic characteristics, and physiological aspects. The cultivar Faisalabad-2008 (wheat) performed well, but at high salinity levels, the hormetic impact of moringa leaf extract was more obvious, enhancing the germination and growth of cultivar Galaxy-2013, which was salinity-sensitive. Wheat cultivars' germination and seedling growth improved most when primed with 2% MLE (Faisalabad-2008) and 2.5% MLE (Galaxy-2013). This demonstrated that moringa possesses growth-promoting compounds that efficiently mitigate toxic impacts of salinity.

Abstract Salinity stress ranks among the most prevalent stress globally, contributing to soil deterioration. Its negative impacts on crop productivity stem from mechanisms such as osmotic stress, ion toxicity, and oxidative stress, all of which impede plant growth and yield. The effect of cobalt with proline on mitigating salinity impact in radish plants is still unclear. That’s why the current study was conducted with aim to explore the impact of different levels of Co and proline on radish cultivated in salt affected soils. There were four levels of cobalt, i.e., (0, 10, 15 and 20 mg/L) applied as CoSO4 and two levels of proline (0 and 0.25 mM), which were applied as foliar. The treatments were applied in a complete randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Results showed that 20 CoSO4 with proline showed improvement in shoot length (∼ 20%), root length (∼ 23%), plant dry weight (∼ 19%), and plant fresh weight (∼ 41%) compared to control. The significant increase in chlorophyll, physiological and biochemical attributes of radish plants compared to the control confirms the efficacy of 20 CoSO4 in conjunction with 10 mg/L proline for mitigating salinity stress. In conclusion, application of cobalt with proline can help to alleviate salinity stress in radish plants. However, multiple location experiments with various levels of cobalt and proline still needs in-depth investigations to validate the current findings.

Alkali stress is a significant challenge across the globe which is posing serious threat to crop production and food security. This study was carried out to study the effect of different levels of alkali stress on growth and physiological traits of Leymus chinensis. The study was comprised of different levels of alkali stress; control (CK; 0 mmol·L-1), 25 and 50 mmol·L-1. The results showed that imposition of 50 mmol·L-1 alkali stress substantially reduced the photosynthetic capacity, relative water contents and accumulation of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in plant parts. Further, 50 mmol·L-1 alkali stress also reduced the above and below ground biomass, and severely inhibited the root growth. Moreover, increase in concentration of alkali stress inhibited clone components, tillering, tillering bud, and internode bud of Leymus chinensis. In conclusion the increasing concentration of alkali stress can reduce the growth and biomass production and nutrient accumulation of Leymus chinensis.

This study primarily investigates the antibacterial properties, tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, hardness, and microstructural characteristics of a composite, utilizing Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for detailed analysis. The composite, crafted through a hand layup technique, optimally blends ramie and hemp fibers within an epoxy matrix. Its antibacterial efficacy was rigorously tested against common bacterial strains, demonstrating significant potential for medical and hygienic applications. The evaluation of tensile strength revealed the composite’s enhanced capability to withstand longitudinal stresses, with a peak strength of 37.81 MPa, achieved by increasing ramie fiber content. In addition, a flexural strength of 39.72 MPa underscored the material’s robust resistance to bending forces, crucial for structural uses. The composite’s impact strength, accessed via the Izod impact test, registered at 0.021 J/m2, indicating its ability to absorb and dissipate energy upon sudden impacts, making it ideal for automotive and protective gear applications. The Rockwell hardness test further quantified the composite’s resistance to surface indentation, vital for wear-resistant surfaces. SEM analysis offered a comprehensive view of the microstructural dynamics between the fibers and the matrix, especially under tensile stress, highlighting the intricacies of fiber–matrix adhesion, crack propagation, and overall composite integrity. Notably, the antibacterial properties were confirmed by an 18 mm inhibition zone, which showcases the composite’s ability to inhibit bacterial growth effectively.

This study reports the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the fruit extract of Withania somnifera and their application as a colorimetric sensor for selective manganese (Mn2+) ion detection. The synthesis of AgNPs was optimized by varying pH, reaction time, and concentrations of fruit extract and AgNO3. UV–visible spectroscopy revealed that the highest absorbance of AgNPs occurred at pH 11, indicating optimal conditions for NPs formation. The absorbance behavior over time demonstrated the nucleation and stabilization processes, with optimal stability achieved after 1800 min. Increasing concentrations of fruit extract and AgNO3 enhanced NPs synthesis, reaching a plateau at 1.0 mL of extract and 1.0 mM AgNO3, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of spherical AgNPs of 43–85 nm. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated the involvement of functional groups such as O-H and C=O in the reduction and stabilization of AgNPs. The green-synthesized AgNPs exhibited notable antioxidant activity, with moderate free radical scavenging abilities compared to ascorbic acid. The colorimetric detection of Mn2+ was achieved through the aggregation of AgNPs, leading to a visible color change. UV–vis absorption spectra showed a prominent peak at 412 nm, with a linear relationship between absorbance change and Mn2+ concentration, demonstrating high sensitivity and selectivity. Comparative studies with other metal ions (Co2+, Cr3+, Ni2+) confirmed the specificity of AgNPs towards Mn2+. In conclusion, the green-synthesized AgNPs from W. somnifera offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach for Mn2+ detection, with significant potential for environmental monitoring and biomedical applications.

Heavy metal ions pose significant risks to human health, pelagic, and several other life forms due to perniciousness, tendency to accumulate, and resistance to biodegradation. Waste bio-materials extend a budding alternative as low-cost adsorbent to address the removal of noxious pollutants from wastewater on account of being cost-effective and exhibiting exceptional adsorption capacities. The current exploration was accomplished to gauge the performance of raw and modified human hair concerning lead scavenging in a down-flow fixed bed column. The appraisal of column performance under varying operational parameters encompassing bed height (15–45 cm), influent metal ion concentration (60–140 mg L−1), and a solution flow rate (20–40 mL min−1) was performed by breakthrough curve analysis. The consequences acquired were evaluated using the Yoon Nelson, Thomas, Adam-Bohart, and Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) model. Among these employed models, Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) and Thomas models exhibited the highest R-squared value compared to the Yoon Nelson and Adam-Bohart's model for most cases. In addition, the optimization of lead adsorption was followed using the Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal conditions (desirability-1.00) for achieving a goal of maximum percent removal of lead ions were marked to be a bed height of 42.79 cm, solution flow rate of 20.92 mL min−1, and an initial metal concentration of 139.51 mg L−1. Under these optimized conditions, the percent amputation of lead in a fixed bed was observed to be 82.31 %, while the results of the experiment performed approximately under these optimized conditions revealed a percent removal of 85.05 %, reflecting a reasonable conformity with values acquired through Box-Behnken design.

The magnesium alloy composite is a vital material for automotive applications due to its features like high stiffness, superior damping resistance, high strength, and lightweight. Here, the motto of research is to establish the AZ91 alloy nanocomposite with the exposures of 0, 1, 3, and 5 volume percentages (vol%) of nano zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) particles (50nm) through fluid stir metallurgy route associated with 1x105 Pa vacuum die cast process. Exposures on structural morphology, hardness, and impact toughness of composite are analyzed and identified as the nano AZ91 alloy composite enclosed with 5vol% is homogenous particle dispersion, enhanced hardness (97.6HV), and optimum toughness of 21.2J/mm2. However, composite faces machining difficulties due to the hard abrasive particles with higher hardness, resulting in tool wear. This experiment predicts the optimum mill parameters during the end mill operation of magnesium alloy nanocomposite (AZ91/5vol%) by using a tungsten carbide coated end mill cutter to attain the maximum metal removal rate with low surface roughness and tool wear analyzed via the general linear model (GLM) ANOVA approach. The input conditions for end milling operation vary, like feed rate (0.1 -0.4mm/rev), depth of cut (0.05 -0.2mm), and spindle speed (250-1000rpm). During the ANOVA GLM approach, the L16 design experiment is fixed for further interaction analysis. The results predicted by the depth to cut and feed rate were dominant and played a major role in deciding the tool wear, surface roughness, and MRR.

Black rice is a highly nutritious cereal that has been introduced to Nepal recently. Due to its late introduction, only a few agronomic research have been conducted so far. Hence, farmers are not aware about the appropriate transplanting methods and cropping geometry for profitable black rice cultivation. To fulfill the research gap and to establish a basic benchmark for further studies, the research focuses on responses of two black rice genotypes at different transplanting methods and cropping geometry. The profitability analysis with respect to transplanting methods and cropping geometry revealed, transplanting 21 days old seedlings with any geometrical pattern would yield and profit more as compared to SRI. Similarly, farmers can get a highest net revenue of 9379.3 $ at the B/C ratio of 12.07 from fine black rice as compared to coarse black rice that has a net revenue of 4485.7 $ at the B/C of 7.38. The highest productivity (2.70 t ha−1), net revenue (6018.5 $), and B/C ratio (13.7) were observed at the crop geometry of 20 cm × 15 cm for coarse black rice. Whereas, the highest yield (4.60 t ha−1), net revenue (10889.8 $), and B/C ratio (19.5) was observed in 20 cm × 10 cm for fine black rice. The higher net revenue and B/C ratio of premium black rice genotypes was due to their higher market price. The correlation analysis suggested tillering index (Ti) and net biomass accumulated up to 60 days after transplanting (DAT) had the highest positive correlation with yield of both black rice genotypes. Hence, the authors recommend researchers to work on additional agronomic practices that enhance the tillering index and net biomass production up to 60 DAT considering transplanting methods yield more as compared to SRI and crop geometry of 20 cm × 15 cm and 20 cm × 10 cm are the most productive and profitable cropping geometry for coarse and fine black rice genotypes, respectively.

Background and aimsNitrogen (N) distribution in plants is intricately linked to key physiological functions, including respiration, photosynthesis, structural development, and nitrogen storage. However, the specific effects of different N morphologies on N accumulation and plant growth are poorly understood. Our research specifically focused on determining how different N morphologies affect N absorption and biomass accumulation.MethodsThis study elucidated the impact of different application rates (CK: 0 g N/plant; T1: 4 g N/plant; T2: 8 g N/plant) of N fertilizer on N and biomass accumulation in tobacco cultivars Hongda and K326 at different growth stages.ResultsOur findings emphasize the critical role of N distribution in various plant parts, including leaves, stems, and roots, in determining the complex mechanisms of N and biomass accumulation in tobacco. We found that in relation to total N, a greater ratio of water-soluble N (Nw) in leaves facilitated N accumulation in leaves. In contrast, an increased ratio of SDS (detergent)-insoluble N (Nin-SDS) in leaves and non-protein N (Nnp) in roots hindered this increase. Additionally, our results indicate that a greater proportion of Nnp in leaves has a negative impact on biomass accumulation in leaves. Furthermore, elevated levels of Nin-SDS, Nw, and Nnp in roots, and Nnp in leaves adversely affected biomass accumulation in tobacco leaves. The Hongda cultivar exhibited greater biomass and N accumulation abilities as compared to K326.ConclusionsOur findings highlight the significant role of distribution of N morphologies on plant growth, as well as N and biomass accumulation in tobacco plants. Understanding N distribution allows farmers to optimize N application, minimizing environmental losses and maximizing yield for specific cultivars. These insights advance sustainable agriculture by promoting efficient resource use and reducing environmental impact.

Abstract The reduction in crop productivity due to drought stress, is a major concern in agriculture. Drought stress usually disrupts photosynthesis by triggering oxidative stress and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). The use of zinc-quantum dot biochar (ZQDB) and proline (Pro) can be effective techniques to overcome this issue. Biochar has the potential to improve the water use efficiency while proline can play an imperative role in minimization of adverse impacts of ROS Proline, functioning as an osmotic protector, efficiently mitigates the adverse effects of heavy metals on plants by maintaining cellular structure, scavenging free radicals, and ensuring the stability of cellular integrity. That’s why current study explored the impact of ZQDB and proline on chili growth under drought stress. Four treatments, i.e., control, 0.4%ZQDB, 0.1 mM Pro, and 0.4%ZQDB + Pro, were applied in 4 replications following the complete randomized design. Results exhibited that 0.4%ZQDB + Pro caused an increases in chili plant dry weight (29.28%), plant height (28.12%), fruit length (29.20%), fruit girth (59.81%), and fruit yield (55.78%) over control under drought stress. A significant increment in chlorophyll a (18.97%), chlorophyll b (49.02%), and total chlorophyll (26.67%), compared to control under drought stress, confirmed the effectiveness of 0.4%ZQDB + Pro. Furthermore, improvement in leaves N, P, and K concentration over control validated the efficacy of 0.4%ZQDB + Pro against drought stress. In conclusion, 0.4%ZQDB + Pro can mitigate drought stress in chili. More investigations are suggested to declare 0.4%ZQDB + Pro as promising amendment for mitigation of drought stress in other crops as well under changing climatic situations.

Abstract Salinity stress is a prominent environmental factor that presents obstacles to the growth and development of plants. When the soil contains high salt concentrations, the roots face difficulties in absorbing water, resulting in water deficits within the plant tissues. Consequently, plants may experience inhibited growth, decreased development, and a decline in biomass accumulation. The use of nanoparticles has become a popular amendment in recent times for the alleviation of salinity stress. The study investigated the biological approach for the preparation of Se nanoparticles (NP) and their effect on the growth of wheat plants under saline conditions. The leaf extract of lemon (Citrus limon L.) was used for the green synthesis of selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs). The synthesized NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and were applied foliar in the range of 0.01%, 0.05% and 0.1% on wheat plants. Results showed that 0.1% SeNP alone exhibited a significantly higher yield per plant, biomass per plant, 1000 grains weight, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll over the SS (salt stress) control. A significant decline in MDA and H2O2 also validated the effectiveness of 0.1% SeNP over the SS control.

The deadliest forms of skin cancer, melanomas have a large fatality rate. In the United States of America, 196,060 new cases of melanoma are anticipated in 2020. In the past, many automated methods for diagnosing skin lesions have been proposed, but they have not yet proven to be very accurate. Based on skin cells’ exposure to sunlight, aberrant skin cell development frequently results in skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation, viruses, bacteria, chemicals, and fungi are the main contributors to skin conditions. The creation of a precise computer-aided system for diagnosing breast cancer is of tremendous clinical importance. An improved machine learning framework has been developed in this research to detect skin lesions or skin cancer. Hence it is important to segment and classify the skin lesion. The research utilizes the fruit fly optimization algorithm and machine learning framework to segment and classifies skin disease and cancer. This platform's central idea is to use the fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) to improve two crucial SVM variables and create an FOA-based SVM (FOA-SVM) for the diagnosis of skin cancer. The integrative approach not only improves accuracy but also provides important data for more accurate classification.

Elevation gradients significantly influence net primary productivity (NPP), but the relationship between elevation, climate variables, and vegetation productivity remains underexplored, particularly in diverse ecological zones. This study quantifies the impact of elevation and climatic variables on NPP in northern Pakistan, hypothesizing that elevation modulates NPP through its influence on temperature and precipitation patterns. Using remote sensing data (MODIS ERA5) and advanced ecological models like the Eddy Covariance-Light Use Efficiency (EC-LUE) model and the Thornthwaite Memorial Model (TMM), we analyzed Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) dynamics across various vegetation types and elevations from 2001 to 2023. Our findings show a mean annual NPP of 323.46 g C m-2 a-1, with an annual increase of 5.73 g C m-2 a-1. Significant elevation-dependent variations were observed, especially in mid-elevation zones (401 to 1600 meters), where NPP increased at a rate of 0.174 g C m-2 a-1 per meter (R² = 0.808, p < 0.01). In contrast, higher elevations (2800-5200 meters) exhibited a decline in NPP, decreasing by -0.171 g C m-2 a-1 per meter (R² = 0.905, p < 0.001). Temperature and precipitation were key drivers, with precipitation positively correlating with NPP across all vegetation types, particularly in Evergreen Needleleaf and Broadleaf Trees. The EC-LUE model's GPP estimates closely matched MODIS data (R² = 0.82), demonstrating the model's reliability. These findings highlight the critical role of elevation and climatic factors in vegetation productivity and underscore the need for targeted ecological management and conservation strategies. The insights from this research are vital for global climate adaptation policies and sustainable development goals, contributing to ecological resilience and carbon sequestration efforts worldwide.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most prevalent breast cancer subtype. Its prognosis is poor because there are no effective treatment targets. Despite several attempts, the molecular pathways of TNBC remain unknown, posing a significant clinical barrier in the search for viable targets. Two microarray datasets were used to identify possible targets for TNBC, GSE38959 and GSE45827, retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in TNBC samples compared with normal samples were identified using the GEO2R program. KEGG pathway enrichment and Gene Ontology functions were assessed for DEG pathways and functional annotation using ShinyGO 0.77. The STRING database and Cytoscape program were used for protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis. Furthermore, we evaluated the predictive significance of hub gene expression in TNBC patients using the GEPIA2 online tool. We developed a comprehensive technique to assess whether intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in the TNBC hub genes. There were 48 DEGs were identified, all of which were upregulated. A putative protein complex containing these four core genes was selected for further analysis. Breast cancer patients with TTK, TOP2A, CENPF, and CCNA2 upregulation had a poor prognosis; TTK and CCNA2 were partially disordered, whereas TOP2A and CENPF were primarily disordered, according to IDR analysis. According to our study, TOP2A and CENPF may be useful therapeutic targets for disruption of the TNBC PPI network.

Food security worldwide is largely dependent on the rice–wheat cropping sequence (RWCS) Hence, a field study was carried out during 2018–19 and 2019–20 at ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, to determine the effect of various enriched organic sources and crop establishment methods on the root parameters, water productivity and yield of rice, its carryover effect on the succeeding wheat crop and the overall efficiency of system. A split plot design was used which involved two main plot treatments, viz., aerobic rice (AR) and conventional transplanted (CT) rice, and five subplot treatments, viz., T1: control (without fertilizer), T2: 100 % RDF (100 % fertilization by using inorganic sources), T3: 50 % phosphorus was applied by using P-enriched compost + 50 % P was applied by using DAP, T4: 50 % N was applied by using N-enriched compost + 50 % nitrogen was applied by using DAP and urea, and T5: 100 % organic fertilizer was applied (100 % fertilization by using N-enriched compost and P-enriched compost). After rice, wheat was grown in all the plots under uniform management practices. Among the nutrient sources, T4 had greater effects on root activity, system economic water productivity and system water productivity than did the other treatments. CT rice can be recommended under irrigated conditions with the integration of enriched compost and inorganic fertilizers. However, under rainfed conditions with less available water, aerobic rice can also be produced by combining enriched compost and inorganic fertilizer.

In the pursuit of sustainable and environmentally friendly engineering materials, this study investigates the potential of Ipomoea carnea fibers (ICF) as a reinforcement agent in bran particulates epoxy matrix used to fabricate the composite laminates by a traditional process with varying filler weight fraction. The composite material’s characteristics were comprehensively analyzed using various techniques, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Mechanical Testing, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The results of this study reveal the promising potential of Ipomoea carnea fibers reinforced bran particulates epoxy composite as a novel engineering material. The analysis indicates improved mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, and impact strength, enhanced thermal stability, and desirable morphological characteristics. Subsequently, the structural and chemical properties of the Ipomoea carnea fiber composite were explored using XRD and FTIR, shedding light on the crystalline nature (CI = 68.29%) and chemical bonding within the material. Bacterial inhibition was identified from the antibacterial activity; this viable material is for applications in various engineering sectors, including construction, automotive, and aerospace industries.

Small molecule-driven JNK activation has been found to induce apoptosis and paraptosis in cancer cells. Herein pharmacological effects of synthetic oxazine (4aS, 7aS)-3-((4-(4‑chloro-2-fluorophenyl)piperazin-1-yl)methyl)-4-phenyl-4, 4a, 5, 6, 7, 7a-hexahydrocyclopenta[e] [1,2]oxazine (FPPO; BSO-07) on JNK-driven apoptosis and paraptosis has been demonstrated in human breast cancer (BC) MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 cells respectively. BSO-07 imparted significant cytotoxicity in BC cells, induced activation of JNK, and increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. It also enhanced the expression of apoptosis-associated proteins like PARP, Bax, and phosphorylated p53, while decreasing the levels of Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, and Survivin. Furthermore, the drug altered the expression of proteins linked to paraptosis, such as ATF4 and CHOP. Treatment with N-acetyl-cysteine (antioxidant) or SP600125 (JNK inhibitor) partly reversed the effects of BSO-07 on apoptosis and paraptosis. Advanced in silico bioinformatics, cheminformatics, density Fourier transform and molecular electrostatic potential analysis further demonstrated that BSO-07 induced apoptosis and paraptosis via the ROS/JNK pathway in human BC cells.

The present study investigated the adsorption of eosin B on the surface of powdered and chemically treated orange peels, along with this process’s condition optimizations, kinetics, and thermodynamics. The adsorbent dose (0.1–0.5 g), temperature (298, 303, 308, and 313 K), contact time (15–120 min), initial pH value (2–11) of the solution, and interfering salts (0.01 and 0.1 mol L−1) were all taken into consideration during the experiments. At all investigated temperatures and pH of 2, adsorption was more favourable. Although the Langmuir model might also represent the adsorption data, the Freundlich and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) models provided a good description. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was followed during the adsorption process. The mechanics of the rate-controlling step were examined by applying the intra-particle diffusion-based mass transfer model to the experimental data. It was discovered that the only process that controlled the rate was intra-particle diffusion. The adsorption process appears to be spontaneous, and endothermic and involves van der Waals forces based on thermodynamic data.

The use and manufacture of nanomaterials are expanding, which is concerning for human health. Graphene oxide (GO), magnesium oxide (MgO), and quercetin (QU) have typically had significant growth because of their diverse range of applications in nanomedicine. They are utilised in the treatment of cancer, medication delivery, tissue engineering, healing of wounds, and biosensor. In this work, MgO-QU/GO nanocomposite was synthesized and its antioxidant was tested in a zebrafish model. Further obtained MgO-QU/GO nanocomposite was characterized through UV, XRD, FTIR, and SEM with EDAX analysis. Zebrafish adult seven test groups were used in the experiment with each group containing 10 fish follows fish fed the control, and exposed to MgO-QU/GO nanocomposite concentration 0+0.0+20.0+40.0+80.0+20+0.0+40+0.0+80+0 mg/L. The outcome shows that the toxicity of the utilised nanocomposite was comparatively low after zebrafish were exposed to MgO-QU/GO and recovered. Exploratory MgO-QU/GO treatment to zebra fish significant by decreased the Lipid Peroxidation (LPO) and elevated the antioxidant. These findings imply that nanocomposite at the concentration considered here might be a workable substitute for water recovery as they have no negative effects on the long-term life and welfare of humans and animals.

In this study, we have synthesized S-substituted benzothiazole derived thiazole bearing bis-Schiff base derivatives (1–19) and characterized via different spectroscopic techniques including NMR and HR-EIMS and then screened against α-amylase and α-glycosidase. All the analogues show excellent inhibitory capability. Analogues 1 (IC50 = 3.18 ± 0.72 µM and 2.30 ± 1.80 µM) and 4 (IC50 = 1.40 ± 0.59 µM and 2.10 ± 0.78 µM) were found to be the strongest among the all in contrast with standard drug acarbose (IC50 = 4.30 ± 0.18 and 6.45 ± 1.84 µM) for α-amylase and α-glycosidase. Some derivatives show good potency against both the enzymes while few were found moderately potent. For all the molecules structure–activity relationship was carried to determine the decrease/increase in potency due to steric hindrance, bulky nature, position, type, size, quantity of the substituent/s on phenyl rings. Molecular docking and ADME analysis were carried out to signify the binding interactions of the most potent derivatives with the active site of enzymes.

In this approach, fused triazole thiazole derivatives (1–14) were synthesized and designed as dual inhibitors of AChE and BuChE which exhibit promising inhibitory activity to cure one of the progressive disorders, Alzheimer’s disease. Different spectroscopic techniques (13C NMR, 1H NMR and HREI-MS) were employed for the synthetic confirmations of all the derivatives. Using the standard drug donepezil (IC50 = 10.60 ± 0.20 for AChE and 11.80 ± 0.49 µM for BuChE). All the analogues in the current series showed a wide range of inhibitory potentials such as (IC50 = 7.20 ± 0.10 to 17.50 ± 0.10 µM for AChE and IC50 = 8.10 ± 0.20 to 18.20 ± 0.10 µM for BuChE). The nature, number and position of the attached substituents in the phenyl ring greatly influenced the inhibitory activity of the current analogues in the series. However, Analogue 4 with IC50 values (7.20 ± 0.10, 8.10 ± 0.20 µM) showed immense potency due to para substituted tri-fluoro methyl moiety. Molecular docking studies and ADME analysis was also conducted for the excellent binding interactions with target enzymes and drug like properties of the potent analogues.

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of green net shade during staggered planting times on growth, biochemical, antioxidant enzymes and vase life of gladiolus cut flowers. The green net shade effectively reduces the internal temperature, particularly during extremely hot planting times. Under the green net shade conditions, high quality morphological and biochemical observations were observed during the months of March and April planting times. These included longer plant height, spike length, a higher number of leaves plant−1, larger leaf area, maximum spike diameter, greater number of florets spike−1, heavier flower diameter, higher fresh and dry weight, elevated photosynthetic rate, and reduced time taken for flowering. Additionally, chlorophyll contents and transpiration rate showed significant increases, while antioxidant enzyme activity (POD and CAT) was recorded at higher levels. This resulted in reduced electrolyte leakage and an extended vase life of the gladiolus cut flowers. Moreover, the application of green net shade conditions during the planting in May and June significantly enhanced the quality characteristics of gladiolus cut flowers. Effectiveness of green net shade is evident in reducing temperature of growing environment, leading to improved growth, alleviate oxidative stress, enhanced quality features and vase life of the gladiolus flowers.

Sulphur deficiency affects several nations, including India, and has become a limiting issue for food productivity and quality. Sulphur deficiency causes plants to shrink, build up yellow chlorosis in their younger leaves, necrosis in their last stages of growth, and become stiff with short, slender stalks. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize Sulphur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) from the rhizosphere and evaluate their potential to enhance chickpea growth with the application of Sulphur fertilizer. Out of 18 isolates, five potential Sulphur oxidizing bacteria were identified using 16 s rDNA sequencing Viz., Enterobacter cloacae KDNC31 (AD31; OR083345.1), Klebsiella oxytoca KDNC1 (OR083341.1), Raoultella planticola KDNC3 (OR083342.1), Enterobacter cloacae KDNC9 (OR083344.1), and Klebsiella pasteurii KDNC8 (OR083343.1). A significant sulphate content (621.2 µg/ml) and sulphide oxidase activity (19.18 U/ml) were reported after the AD31 isolate was inoculated in thiosulphate broth, which caused a fast pH reduction to pH 4.0 within 3 days. The strain produced IAA (1600 µg/ml), ammonia (278.78 µg/ml), solubilized tricalcium phosphate (1800 µg/ml), and HCN, among other plant growth-promoting substances. The Sulphur oxidation potential of AD31 was assessed by supplementing it with elemental Sulphur and granular Sulphur in a pot. The results indicated that, When AD31 and elemental Sulphur were applied together, the length of the shoots, the length of the roots, the number of leaves and branches, and the fresh and dry weight of the shoots and roots were all significantly higher compared to the corresponding control. Elemental Sulphur has a smaller particle size and a larger surface area, making it more suitable for Sulphur oxidation by AD31 compare to granular Sulphur. Therefore, SOB inoculation with elemental Sulphur might be employed to increase chick pea growth-related indices.

Concrete is the prime source, which fulfils the applications for construction in various forms. The prime roles of concrete industries are reducing material usage, enrichment of compressive strength, and flexural strength of concrete usage. This research focuses on recycling kaolin (mining waste) and silica fume, a great potential material for replacing coarse aggregate gravel stone and fine aggregate sand in conventional concrete as a hybrid. The developed concrete contained 5% nano alumina (Al2O3), 10% of kaolin waste (KW), and 5, 10, and 15% of silica fume (SF), and its behavior like compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption, and acid attack behavior is studied. The molecular structure of crystalline is analyzed via X-ray diffraction (XRD). The 15% SF blended with 5% alumina and 10% KW cured within 28 and 90 days recorded high compressive and flexural strength (44 ± 1.76 MPa and 4.3 ± 0.17 MPa). XRD pattern proved their alumina, SF, and KW and found that the concrete blended with 5% alumina, 10% KW, and 15 wt% SF(90 days cured concrete) showed low water absorption (3.1 ± 0.12%). The effect of sulfuric acid behavior on weight reduction was 0.78% compared to CC1 (concrete cube without Al2O3, SF, and KW).

Environmental consciousness motivates scientists to devise an alternative method for producing natural fiber composite materials in order to decrease the demand for synthetic fibers. This study explores the potential of a novel composite material derived from madar fiber-reinforced epoxy with porcelain filler particulates, designed specifically for biomedical instrumentation applications. The primary focus is to assess the material's structural, mechanical, and antibacterial properties. X-ray Diffraction analysis was employed to discern the crystalline nature of the composite, revealing enhanced crystallinity due to the inclusion of porcelain particulates. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy confirmed the chemical interactions and bonding mechanisms between madar fiber, epoxy matrix, and porcelain filler. Mechanically, the composite exhibited superior properties when addition of porcelain fillers, maximum results obtain in tensile strength of 51.28 MPa, flexural strength of 54.21 MPa, and impact strength of 0.0155 kJ/m2, making it ideal for robust biomedical applications. Scanning Electron Microscopy provided detailed insights into the morphology and distribution of the reinforcing agents within the epoxy matrix, emphasizing the fibrillated structure of madar fiber and the uniform dispersion of porcelain particulates. Importantly, antibacterial assays demonstrated the composite's potential resistance against common pathogenic bacteria, which is crucial for biomedical instrumentation. Collectively, this research underscores the promising attributes of the madar fiber reinforced epoxy composite with porcelain particulates, suggesting its suitability for advanced biomedical applications.

BackgroundPlasmodiophora brassicae is an ever-increasing threat to cruciferous crop production worldwide.Aims and methodsThis study investigated the impact of pre-soil fumigation with ammonium bicarbonate (N) and lime (NB) to manage clubroot disease in Chinese cabbage through 16S rRNA gene amplification sequencing.ResultsWe found that soil fumigation with N and NB suppressed disease incidence by reducing the soil acidity and population of P. brassicae in the rhizosphere. Minimum disease incidence and maximum relative control effect of about 74.68 and 66.28% were achieved in greenhouse and field experiments, respectively, under the combined application of ammonium bicarbonate and lime (LNB) as compared with N, NB, and control (GZ). Microbial diversity analysis through Miseq sequencing proved that pre-soil fumigation with N, NB, and LNB clearly manipulated rhizosphere microbial community composition and changed the diversity and structure of rhizosphere microbes compared with GZ. Bacterial phyla such as Proteobacteria, Bacteriodetes, and Acidobacteria and fungal phyla including Olpidiomycota and Ascomycota were most dominant in the rhizosphere of Chinese cabbage plants. Soil fumigation with N and NB significantly reduced the abundance of clubroot pathogen at genus (Plasmodiophora) level compared with GZ, while decreased further under combined application LNB. Microbial co-occurrence network analysis showed a highly connected and complex network and less competition for resources among microbes under combined application LNB.ConclusionWe conclude that for environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture, soil fumigation with combined ammonium bicarbonate and lime plays a crucial role in mitigating Chinese cabbage clubroot disease by alleviating soil pH, reducing pathogen population, and manipulating the rhizosphere microbiome.

Abstract In alkaline soil conditions, the availability of essential nutrients for plant growth becomes limited, posing a significant challenge for achieving optimal maize growth and yield. Exploring the impact of biochar and waste irrigation on soil alkalinity and maize production in arid regions has received limited attention. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three levels of acidified biochar (0, 5, and 10 Mg ha−1) in two growing seasons of maize—spring and autumn. The treatments were applied following a randomized complete block design with three replications. Biochar was applied only in the autumn season, and its residual effects were evaluated in the spring season. The study found that using acidifying biochar at a rate of 10 Mg ha−1 significantly increased maize yield by 35.8% compared to no application and by 16.4% compared to a rate of 5 Mg ha−1. In the autumn, applying acidified biochar at 10 Mg ha−1 reduced soil pH by 3.65% and 6.41% compared to 0 and 5 Mg ha−1. In the spring, the same application led to a decrease in soil pH by 5.84% and 7.37% compared to the lower rates. Additionally, using 10 Mg ha−1 of acidifying biochar increased soil phosphorus concentration by 87.6% and soil potassium concentration by 38.0% compared to not using biochar, and by 46.2% and 35.0% compared to the 5 Mg ha−1 application. These findings suggest that the reduction of soil pH by applying biochar at a rate of 10 Mg ha−1 facilitated an increase in nutrient availability in the soil, consequently leading to higher maize yield. Notably, no significant differences were observed in maize productivity and soil properties between the spring and autumn seasons. Therefore, this study paves the way for further exploration into the long-term effects of acidifying biochar on maize productivity and soil properties in similar agroecological contexts.

Abstract Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) by‐products (leaves, stems, stalks) (CBP) were successfully utilized in muffins as a model system and their feasibility of incorporation was investigated. CBP powder‐based muffin formulations were made by the progressive replacement of wheat flour (WF) with 10%, 20%, and 30% of CBP. The physicochemical, pasting properties, antioxidant potential, textural characteristics, and sensorial attributes were analyzed. Substitution of CBP significantly (p 10%) had significant adverse effects on baking and physical characteristics. The specific loaf volume of the developed muffins decreased the crumb color which became darker, and enriched muffins were hardened in texture. Furthermore, sensory evaluation confirmed the positive effects of CBP incorporation only up to 10%. Overall, present results highlighted that supplementation of wheat muffins with 10% CBP is a beneficial approach to enrich them with nutrients and intensify their antioxidant potential.

Natural pigments obtained from plants, animals, and microbes are not only a potent alternative to synthetic dyes in the food, textile, and cosmetic industries, but they also possess immense pharmacological properties. Carmine acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, indigo, anthocyanin, melanins, and curcumin are such natural pigments that have proven pharmacological properties. Zeaxanthin is one such natural water-soluble antioxidant pigment that belongs to the xanthophyll family and is predominantly accumulated in the retina of the eyes. The potency of zeaxanthin against LPS-induced inflammation in in vitro and in vivo conditions was examined. RAW264.7 cells were treated with zeaxanthin and challenged with LPS. The LPS-induced zeaxanthin-treated cells were subjected to assessments of cytotoxicity and inflammatory markers. For the in vivo study, BALB/c male mice were induced to have acute lung inflammation by LPS. The ALI-induced mice were treated with 25 and 50 mg/kg concentrations of zeaxanthin. BALF was collected from zeaxanthin-treated ALI-induced mice and was sacrificed for the excision of lung tissue. Pulmonary edema was examined in the lung tissues. Immune cell infiltration and protein content were examined in the BALF collected. Oxidative stress induction was analyzed in the lung tissue of ALI-induced mice. The inflammatory markers iNOS, COX-2, and PGE-2 were quantified in the lung tissues of zeaxanthin-treated ALI-induced mice. Zeaxanthin effectively prevented lung edema and immune cell infiltration. Oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokine synthesis induced by LPS in the lungs were significantly decreased with zeaxanthin treatment. Histopathological analysis also confirms our in vitro and in vivo biochemical analyses. Overall, our findings corroborate that zeaxanthin is a potent anti-inflammatory agent that effectively inhibits LPS-induced ALI in both in vitro and in vivo conditions.

Recently, nanoparticles have received considerable attention owing to their efficiency in overcoming the limitations of traditional chemotherapeutic drugs. In our study, we synthesized a vanillic acid nanocomposite using both chitosan and silver nanoparticles, tested its efficacy against lung cancer cells, and analyzed its antimicrobial effects. We used several characterization techniques such as ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to determine the stability, morphological characteristics, and properties of the biosynthesized vanillic acid nanocomposites. Furthermore, the vanillic acid nanocomposites were tested for their antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The data showed that the nanocomposite effectively inhibited microbes, but its efficacy was less than that of the individual silver and chitosan nanoparticles. Moreover, the vanillic acid nanocomposite exhibited anticancer effects by increasing the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins (BAX, Casp3, Casp7, cyt C, and p53) and decreasing the gene expression of Bcl-2. Overall, vanillic acid nanocomposites possess promising potential against microbes, exhibit anticancer effects, and can be effectively used for treating diseases such as cancers and infectious diseases.

Abstract The growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum) is constrained by soil salinity, although some fungal species have been shown to enhance production in saline environments. The yield of grain crops is affected by salt stress, and this study aimed to investigate how arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) mitigates salt stress. An experiment was conducted to assess the impact of AMF on wheat growth and yield in conditions of 200 mM salt stress. Wheat seeds were coated with AMF at a rate of 0.1 g (108 spores) during sowing. The results of the experiment demonstrated that AMF inoculation led to a significant improvement in the growth attributes of wheat, including root and shoot length, fresh and dry weight of root and shoot. Furthermore, a significant increase in chlorophyll a, b, total, and carotenoids was observed in the S2 AMF treatment, validating the effectiveness of AMF in enhancing wheat growth under salt stress conditions. Additionally, AMF application reduced the negative effects of salinity stress by increasing the uptake of micronutrients such as Zn, Fe, Cu, and Mn while regulating the uptake of Na (decrease) and K (increase) under salinity stress. In conclusion, this study confirms that AMF is a successful strategy for reducing the negative effects of salt stress on wheat growth and yield. However, further investigations are recommended at the field level under different cereal crops to establish AMF as a more effective amendment for the alleviation of salinity stress in wheat.

Actinomycetes provide a potentially limitless source of novel bioactive compound, possessing a wide range of potential therapeutic uses. Around 25,000 microbial secondary metabolites have been recognized; actinomycetes produce some 75%, of them, with fungi yielding 15%, Bacillus spp. 6%, and other bacteria producing around 1–3%. Species of Streptomyces provide 50–60 percent of the known antibiotics. Over the last seventy or so years, a vast array of microorganisms has been isolated from soils and other readily accessible environments and the screened for antibiotics. Such screening programs have significantly reduced the likelihood that novel antimicrobial compounds, particularly active against drug resistant species, will now be found. Fortunately, unusual marine environments may act as a future source of actinomycetes and other microorganisms capable of producing new secondary metabolite possessing antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, insecticidal, enzyme inhibitory and other therapeutic properties. The aim of this review is to highlight marine actinomycetes as a novel source of such potentially critical novel antibiotic and bioactive compounds.

ZnO and ZnO-Y2O3 nanocomposites (NCs) were investigated for their photocatalytic degradation of Methylene blue (MB) dye. X-ray diffraction study demonstrates that the hexagonal structure of ZnO has crystallite size compared to ZnO-Y2O3 NCs and confirms the cubic configuration of Y2O3. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the ZnO nanoparticles are spherical and ZnO-Y2O3 NCs have smaller particles with less agglomeration. The decreased recombining of excited e−/h+ of ZnO-Y2O3 NCs is confirmed over fluorescence study. ZnO-Y2O3 exhibits a more significant degradation efficiency (96%) than ZnO nanoparticles (86%) in 120 min. ZnO-Y2O3 NCs have antibacterial as well as antioxidant activity.
