The overmodulation scheme plays an essential role in the dynamic performance of the current regulation under voltage limitation. This article analyses how the nonlinearity of the voltage hexagon affects dynamic overmodulation. Most dynamic overmodulation schemes had considered the voltage hexagon as the limit of the output voltage to maximize the voltage utilization. However, these schemes do not show uniform dynamic performance according to the rotor position on the voltage hexagon. To overcome this limitation, this article proposes an overmodulation scheme that is robust against the rotor position variation. The computer simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed method has the consistent performance regardless of the rotor position with less d-axis current overshoot keeping the fast dynamics. The control system design of grid-forming (GFM) converters requires prior knowledge of grid parameters such as grid impedance, grid equivalent electromagnetic force (EMF), and short-circuit ratio (SCR), which are normally time-variant and preferably estimated in real time. However, existing estimation methods are either unable to estimate multiple parameters simultaneously or involve complex calculation algorithms for nonintrusive estimations. To address this issue, this study proposes a real-time grid parameter estimation method for GFM converters. Without introducing disturbances into the system, multiple parameters can be simultaneously estimated during the transient state with a simple algorithm, while the effects of the virtual impedance of the GFM converter and the output filter are both considered. In addition, a parameter estimation-based adaptive synchronous power control (SPC) is proposed, which exhibits improved dynamic performance and enhanced robustness of the GFM converter under various grid conditions. When not all the converters are enabled in a parallel ac/dc power conversion system, some current flows through the disabled converters. This current not only distorts the current waveform of the ac side but also causes extra loss and unintended power flow from the ac to the dc side. In this article, the reason for this current flow is identified, and the total current according to the number of paralleled converters and its operating conditions are analyzed. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method is proposed to minimize the current. And, the zero-sequence voltage and the consequent current flowing through the disabled converters under the proposed PWM method are compared to those under the conventional PWM methods. As a result, it was identified that discontinuous space vector PWM (DPWM) is not a proper PWM method because it causes a large current at some operating conditions. According to both simulation and experimental results, the magnitude of the current flows through disabled converters under the proposed PWM was about 40% less than that under sine PWM and DPWM, and it was about 10% less than that under continuous space vector PWM. For stable and efficient drives of interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs), stator flux should be observed across a wide speed range. However, distortions such as a dc offset and low-order harmonics are contained in the estimated flux due to various reasons. In this paper, a distortion-minimizing flux observer is proposed to suppress the effects of dc offset and harmonics by implementing frequency-adaptive observers. The proposed frequency-adaptive flux observer is designed to extract a fundamental flux while keeping a simple structure even if the rotating speed of the IPMSM varies. The fundamental flux could be estimated by the proposed current- and voltage-model based flux observer, which is implemented with the frequency-adaptive observer and harmonic extractors. Moreover, parameter sensitivity and model transition are discussed to improve the performance of the proposed observers. In this paper, a current controller for a parallel operation of inverters is described. When inverters operate in parallel, it is a well-known fact that the inverter current is composed of the average current (AVC) and the zero-sequence circulating current (henceforth ZSCC), which inevitably flows between inverters under the parallel operation. Considering this, previous studies concentrated on reducing ZSCC. However, in this paper, it is found that the inverter current has another component, a differential current, in addition to the two components of AVC and ZSCC. Based on these three decomposed current components, three equivalent circuits are derived from n-paralleled inverters. To minimize the differential current and improve the regulation performance of the total output phase current, a decomposed current control scheme is proposed from equivalent circuit models. The proposed algorithm is applied to a system consisting of three paralleled two-level inverters with small shared inductance whose dc links are connected in common. Additionally, synchronous pulsewidth modulation is employed as the PWM method for each inverter. The proposed current controller is compared with two conventional current controllers, one where each inverter controls its own currents and the other where only AVC is controlled. Through experiments, it is shown that these conventional controllers have limitations and the proposed current controller overcomes these limitations. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control scheme are verified through experimental results. Power conversion systems based on double-delta sourced winding (DDSW) had an optimization issue in terms of pulsewidth modulation (PWM). This issue was about inefficient employments of voltage levels during PWM and had to be considered for minimizing voltage stresses and current ripples on DDSW. In this paper, a novel method has been proposed to improve the performance of PWM in DDSW-based systems. The proposed method can be simply implemented as a carrier-based PWM and its principles are neatly summarized with equations. In this paper, new model-based sensorless control methods are proposed that include independent estimations of position and speed errors, and compatible position and speed estimators. Using the proposed position estimator, a unity transfer function can be achieved from the actual position to the estimated position, eliminating the effects of load disturbances. This implies that the position error would ideally be zero, even in a transient state. In addition, the effects of parameter and voltage synthesis errors on the steady-state position error are analyzed. Experimental results verify both the analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed methods under severe load disturbances such as speed transient (20 000 r/min/s) and load torque transient (10 p.u./s). With the proposed methods, position estimation errors are significantly reduced by more than 50% during speed and load torque transients at identical dominant-pole placements, verifying the enhanced tracking capability and robustness of the proposed methods against external load disturbances. In signal injection sensorless drives, the injection voltage cannot be reduced under a certain value. The lower limit of the injection voltage is mainly enforced by the inverter nonlinearity that causes distortion of the injection voltage and degradation of the position estimation performance. After analyzing the inverter nonlinearity during the voltage injection, it is revealed that parasitic capacitances of insulated-gate bipolar transistors have positive effects on inverter output linearity and sensorless control. Based on this analysis, this paper proposes a method to reduce the injection voltage by connecting additional capacitors to the output terminals of the inverter. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed idea. In the experiments, using the capacitor-integrated inverter, it is shown that the injection voltage can be reduced by more than half without degrading the position estimation performance. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a promising candidate for voltage-sourced-converter-based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) transmission. The dc short-circuit fault management is a crucial issue especially for overhead line transmission, where the nonpermanent dc short-circuit faults occasionally occur. In this paper, a comprehensive dc short-circuit fault ride through (FRT) strategy is proposed for a hybrid MMC which combines half-bridge submodules and full-bridge submodules. By the proposed method, the hybrid MMC-based VSC-HVDC system is able to ride through a pole-to-pole short-circuit fault supporting the ac grid as a static synchronous compensator. Moreover, the transmission system can still transmit one-half of the rated active power in case of a pole-to-ground short-circuit fault without increasing power semiconductor stresses or requiring higher insulation levels of the electric equipment. The proposed method ensures successful regulation of arm currents and submodule capacitor voltages during the FRT process. In this paper, a design methodology and control algorithms of an interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM) for absolute position sensorless drive are proposed. In conventional research on absolute position sensorless control, initial motion of the rotor was inevitable, which was not preferred in many applications. In order to eliminate the initial motion, an IPMSM with an asymmetric rotor and search coils is devised. In the proposed IPMSM, the information of the absolute position is included in the voltage signals at the search coils. By measuring and analyzing the search coil voltages, the absolute position can be estimated without any initial motion of the rotor. In this paper, two designs of interior permanent-magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) for sensorless drive with absolute rotor position estimation capability are proposed. A conventional IPMSM design proposed for the same purpose had a demerit that for the absolute position estimation, the rotor should initially stroke for 100 degrees in the worst case. Using the proposed IPMSMs featuring asymmetric winding and asymmetric rotor geometry, the initial stroke of the rotor can be reduced to 30 degrees. Moreover, basic characteristics of the motor such as torque ripples and harmonics of electromotive force (EMF) are conspicuously improved. The proposed designs are evaluated by rigorous finite-element analyses and experimental tests. The maximum power point should be continuously tracked in a photovoltaic (PV) inverter. However, the maximum power point could be found at very low dc-link voltages around sunrise or sunset. Then, the overmodulation (OVM) of the inverter has to be considered to keep the power generation even at low dc-link voltages. In this paper, a series of implementation schemes is proposed to keep the current regulation, even if the inverter is under the OVM. These schemes can be helpful to increase the operating time of the PV inverter, which correlates with the daily amount of power generation. After being examined in a small-scale prototype inverter, the proposed method has been tested with a 250-kW PV inverter installed at a proving ground. In a sunset, the operation time of the inverter has been extended by about 12 min, and the generated energy has been increased by 234 Wh, when compared to the normal operation without the proposed methods. This paper conducts modeling and controller design for a SEries-connected Output Universal Link (SEOUL) converter. The SEOUL converter was proposed to interface multiple distributed power sources to the grid with a reduced amount of reactive components. It employs a high-frequency (HF) transformer instead of a bulky line-frequency transformer like solid-state transformers (SSTs). In addition, it does not use a large dc-link capacitor at the input side and reduces the size of the input filter. This is inherently possible due to its original operating characteristic. The input phase current is not actively controlled but synthesized indirectly by HF power transfer between input and output sides of the SEOUL converter. Therefore, it is important to properly control the HF power transfer part, on which this paper focuses. An analytic model is developed, and a control strategy is proposed based on the model with a decoupling control method. Accurate measurement of phase current is crucial in a current-controlled permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive system. Current measurement error directly deteriorates torque control performance. This paper analyzes effects of the current measurement error on the phase current and the output voltage of the current controller. Based on the analysis, a compensation method is proposed. The proposed method compensates the offset and scaling errors separately without any additional hardware but using the commanded voltage reference of the current controller. The proposed method can be applied to general current-controlled PMSM drives in the whole operation range. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed compensation method. The interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) has been widely used as the traction motor in electric/hybrid vehicles because of its high torque density and wide operating speed range. During the operation of the IPMSM, the stator winding temperature and magnet temperature should be monitored to prevent winding insulation breakdown and irreversible demagnetization and to improve the torque accuracy. This article devised a method involving the use of a high-frequency (HF) resistance and an HF inductance for estimating these two temperatures at low motor speeds. The relationship between the HF impedance and both temperatures was determined and verified using an experimental setup in which both temperatures could be measured. Based on the relation, the temperature estimation method has been proposed, in this article, and verified by the experimental test. The proposed method was used to estimate the stator winding and the magnet temperatures simultaneously for 6000 s, and the maximum error was 6 °C and 3 °C for the stator winding and magnet temperature, respectively, even when the load and the temperatures varied considerably. A grid synchronization technique is essential for grid-connected power converters. Phase-locked loop (PLL) has been widely exploited as an implementation technique, but additional efforts are required to deal with severely distorted grid voltages. In this paper, an observer is proposed to enhance the performance of PLL. A state equation is newly formulated to construct the observer, which extracts positive-sequence voltage from the distorted grid voltage. Additionally, guidelines are suggested to set the observer gains by considering its internal transfer functions. The PLL and proposed observer have been tested in simulations and experiments in contrast to dual second-order generalized integrator frequency-locked loop. Trapezoidal voltages can be used to compensate for the inverter nonlinearity. In particular, the modulating shape of these voltages facilitates the adaptation of the compensation to various operating conditions. In conventional motor drive systems using pulsewidth modulation (PWM) inverters, large electrolytic capacitors are used for stabilization of the dc-link voltage. Since the electrolytic capacitors are bulky and reduce reliability of the system due to short lifetime, there have been many efforts to eliminate or reduce the electrolytic capacitors in the motor drive system. However, the PWM inverter with reduced dc-link capacitor has a problem that the dc-link voltage is less stable compared to the conventional inverter because the capability of storing energy is also reduced. In this paper, a dc-link voltage stabilization algorithm using an active damping is proposed so that the dc-link voltage can be stabilized with reduced dc-link capacitor. To achieve load-/source-independent stabilization, a source state estimator which estimates both source voltage and current is also proposed. The fluctuation of the dc-link voltage due to a step load change can be also suppressed under the tolerance range using the estimated source current. It is important to improve the overall efficiency of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter when it is connected to the grid. Fundamentally, the conversion efficiency from dc to ac power of an inverter is important. However, in the presence of partial shading, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) on PV modules is more important than the conversion efficiency. In this paper, a new control method for a three-level inverter is proposed. With the proposed method, each dc-link voltage of the three-level inverter can be asymmetrically regulated. When PV modules are split into two and each split module is connected to the respective dc-link capacitors of the inverter, the asymmetric control can be helpful because separate MPPTs are possible. The effectiveness of the proposed method was examined through experiments with a T-type three-level inverter, where each dc-link capacitor was supplied by a PV simulator emulating two separate PV modules under different shading conditions. This article discusses the feasibility of signal-injec- tion sensorless control (SISC) in low saliency surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motors (SMPMSMs). At first, dynamic inductances of a target SMPMSM according to rotor position and dq-axes currents are measured from an experiment. The current response induced by the injected voltage is theoretically calculated based on the inductances. The induced current signal in every operable point on dq current plane is evaluated with a newly defined index variable. An optimal current trajectory for the SISC is proposed after the evaluation. By adopting optimal trajectory control instead of maximum torque per ampere control, the performance of the SISC in the SMPMSM can be conspicuously improved at the cost of slightly increased electrical loss. The nonlinearity of an inverter could be regarded as the output distortions of the inverter. In this paper, voltages in a trapezoidal form were utilized to compensate for the nonlinearity of an inverter. Undesirable harmonic distortions in the overall system were mitigated through the modulating shape of the trapezoidal voltage. For trapezoidal modulation, a dedicated modulator was designed to facilitate adaptive compensation for a wide operating range. The compensation effects from the proposed method were examined in a practical system, in which a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was driven without any position sensor. This paper describes a new control algorithm which can enhance the dynamics of a sensorless control system and gives a precise sensorless control performance. Instead of the conventional sinusoidal-type voltage injection, a square-wave-type voltage injection incorporated with the associated signal processing method is proposed in this paper. As a result, the error signal can be calculated without low-pass filters and time delays, and the position estimation performance can be enhanced. This paper presents a novel flux-weakening strategy for an induction machine driven by an electrolytic-capacitor-less inverter. In the electrolytic-capacitor-less inverter, the dc-link voltage is fluctuating at six times the frequency of the input three-phase source due to its small dc-link capacitance. Hence, the decoupling of the fluctuation and maximum utilization of the dc-link voltage is a major issue in the electrolytic-capacitor-less inverter. In this paper, the cost function is set to increase the voltage utilization of the inverter for the flux-weakening operation of an induction machine. With the proposed flux-weakening strategy, the operating speed of the induction machine is extended above the base speed without any stability problems. This paper presents a protection strategy for the semiconductor switches in an electrolytic capacitorless converter. The proposed protection strategy is capable of protecting the semiconductor switches from overvoltage breakdown caused by the regenerative energy flowing from the load to the grid after the source lines are disconnected by the grid interruption. The energy stored in the machine inductance also may result in excessive dc-bus overvoltage due to the small dc capacitance in the electrolytic capacitorless converter. According to the proposed algorithm, the energy in the q-axis inductance is transferred to the d-axis inductance in the rotor reference frame while the dc-bus voltage is maintained within an allowable range by the proposed dc-bus voltage regulation during the grid (or source) interruption. This article proposes a new high-fidelity simulation model of an induction motor (IM) based on finite-element analysis (FEA). The proposed model enables fast and accurate IM simulation with the inverter circuit model and control algorithm. That is, the proposed model can represent non-ideal features of IM, such as magnetic saturation, spatial harmonics, skew, and saturation-induced saliency in high accuracy. To construct the proposed model, a dq equivalent circuit of the squirrel cage rotor is introduced. Based on this, the static FEA is conducted which can accelerate the model construction compared to the conventional time-stepping FEA technique. Then, a flux-based IM model is established, which has advantages on speed, accuracy, and memory size in the simulation. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, the models are constructed for two commercial IMs used for the industrial drive. IM control algorithms are tested in various operating conditions on the proposed model. This article proposes an online maximum torque-per-Ampere (MTPA) control of an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) based on the square-wave voltage signal injection. Because the proposed method does not rely on a position sensor, it is applicable to sensorless IPMSMs. The proposed algorithm consists of a dynamic inductance estimator, frequency-adaptive flux observer, and an MTPA tracking controller. The proposed inductance estimation utilizes the pulsating square-wave voltage injection, which can maximize the injection frequency, and the dynamic performance can be preserved during the signal injection. Through the online flux and inductance estimation, the magnetic saturation of the IPMSM and the temperature variation can be fully considered in the MTPA control. The conventional rotor position estimator is replaced with the MTPA tracking controller, which does not rely on offline commissioning parameters. The proposed algorithm can operate under both the torque control and speed control mode, and accurate torque control on MTPA curve can be achieved. This study proposes an on-line minimum loss (ML) control strategy that considers the iron and copper losses of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor in torque-controlled applications. The proposed ML control strategy utilizes a constrained optimization problem to satisfy torque reference tracking and loss minimization. An equivalent iron loss resistance circuit is adopted for the loss minimization. To solve the optimization problem, the Lagrange multiplier method is applied through a numerical analysis algorithm. The resulting solution provides the optimal current reference for every sampling instant. The Lagrange multiplier method needs parameters such as magnetic flux linkages, dynamic inductances, and iron loss resistance. Fundamental magnetic flux linkages are estimated using a flux observer, and the dynamic inductances are estimated with high-frequency voltage signal injection. The proposed iron loss resistance estimator estimates the equivalent iron resistance without any preliminary experiments. DC input power is measured using a current sensor for the accurate on-line estimation of iron loss resistance. To analyze the effectiveness of ML control compared with conventional maximum torque per ampere control, finite element analysis is used. This article analyzes the effect of discretization in the frequency-adaptive flux observer (FAO). Although FAO has structural simplicity and ease of implementation, the discrete-time FAO has phase and gain errors in fundamental flux estimation. As a result, the estimated flux might be erroneous, especially in the high-speed region. For accurate flux estimation, this article analyzes how the voltage synthesis in the pulsewidth-modulation affects the stator flux. Through the analysis, the backward Euler method is selected for the primitive stator flux estimation. To mitigate the FAO's discretization error, the proposed FAO utilizes the integrators constructed at the rotor reference frame (RRF). Since the discretization error comes from the approximation error of the continuous-time integrator at the operating frequency, the proposed FAO conducts the fundamental flux extraction at the RRF, where the operating frequency components are treated as a dc signal. Thanks to the coordinate transformation, the FAO can be discretized with no error while keeping the structure of double integrators. This article proposes a precise identification scheme of an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) flux linkage through experimental tests considering motor nonlinearities, such as the magnetic saturation and spatial harmonics. In the proposed scheme, the flux linkage is identified based on the voltage equation of IPMSM. The fundamental and harmonic electromotive force in the rotor reference frame is obtained in real time by applying a discrete Fourier transform with the phase compensation of the time delay due to digital control and pulsewidth modulation. The effect of the inverter nonlinearity is compensated using an experimentally obtained lookup table. Based on the identified flux-linkage map, a flux-based IPMSM model that accurately simulates motor behavior can be constructed. In this article, a magnet temperature estimation method applicable to an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) at a standstill has been newly devised. First, it is analyzed that an inductance of IPMSM varies according to not only a magnet temperature but also a rotor angle, which is spatial harmonics. The analysis is verified in a small-scaled motor-generation set (MG-set), where magnet temperatures can be directly measured. Based on the analysis and experimental results, it is demonstrated that spatial harmonics can make no negligible error in the magnet temperature estimation. Therefore, the estimation method has been newly devised in this article, considering spatial harmonics. As a result, the devised method can reduce the maximum estimation error from 25.3 to 6 °C based on experimental results in the small-scaled MG-set. Additionally, the devised method has been verified as feasible for use in the small-scaled motor and the traction motor of a mass-produced electric vehicle. As a result, the proposed method can estimate the magnet temperature accurately at every rotor position of both motors. Through this online estimation, the maximum estimation error is less than 5 °C even when the stator winding temperature is varying in both a small-scaled motor and the traction motor. In an interior permanent-magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) for higher torque density, there would be undesirable torque ripples due to spatial harmonics. This article analyzes the torque ripple based on the actual torque map, which is more practical and accurate than the torque model-based analyses. Based on the analysis, a torque ripple-minimizing scheme is proposed for practical IPMSMs. In addition, an experimental identification method of torque map is proposed. The identified torque map is used not only for the proposed torque ripple-minimizing method, but also for the torque reconstruction in experiments. This article analyzes the instantaneous flux trajectory of a permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) in the six-step operation. Not only the flux dynamics but also the instantaneous voltage vector are included in the analysis. Based on the analysis, a time-optimal voltage vector transition scheme is proposed for the six-step operation of a PMSM. In the proposed scheme, a few steps are added in the transition of the voltage vectors to bring additional degrees of freedom, and they can enhance the dynamic performance conspicuously under the given current constraint. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the proposed scheme. For the stepwise torque command, the proposed scheme saves the settling time more than 50% with 60% reduction of the peak current compared to the conventional transition method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
