8. Stacked gabbro units and intervening mantle: A detailed look at a section of IODP Leg 305, Hole U1309D

Abstract

Hole U1309D (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Legs 304/305) penetrated 1415 m into the seafloor of the Atlantis Massif, an oceanic core complex at 30°N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge. More than 96% of all recovered rocks are gabbroic. On the basis of a mineral chemical overview, we suggest that between less than or equal to 800 and 1100 m below sea floor (mbsf), a magmatic unit occurs, ranging from olivine gabbro and troctolite in the lower part to gabbronorite and oxide gabbro in the upper part. Below 1235 mbsf, massive gabbronorites/oxide gabbros were drilled and they may represent the roof of an underlying magmatic unit. The focus here is on the zone where both units interact and screens, totaling 50 m, of a microstructurally distinct, olivine-rich troctolite occur. We argue that the olivine-rich troctolite is a former mantle rock which was converted to a crust-mantle transition zone dunite at the base of the upper magmatic unit. Later, as melts derived from the lower magmatic unit percolated through it, it was equilibrated to a more evolved chemistry and transformed to a fine-grained, olivine-rich troctolite. Our main arguments against a possible cumulate nature of the olivine-rich troctolite are the lack of a systematic downhole trend in compatible elements within the olivine-rich troctolite, its distinctly fine-grained microstructure, the high Cr content of cpx, and its Ni-rich olivine composition. The high NiO for a given Mg/(Mg + Fe) in the olivine-rich troctolite can be modeled by simple equilibration of relict mantle olivine with a mildly evolved melt. Evidence for the percolation of evolved melts through the olivine-rich troctolites are Ti-rich, interstitial pyroxenes and, as inclusions in Cr-spinel, highly evolved amphiboles and orthopyroxenes plus the occurrence of millimeter-scale noritic veins. The percolation by evolved melts would also be the major difference to otherwise conceptually similar rocks from the ophiolitic crust-mantle transition zone.

Abstract

IODP Expedition 304/305 Science Party 2007; International audience; Oceanic core complexes expose gabbroic rocks on the seafloor via detachment faulting, often associated with serpentinized peridotite. The thickness of these serpentinite units is unknown. Assuming that the steep slopes that typically surround these core complexes provide a cross section through the structure, it has been inferred that serpentinites compose much of the section to depths of at least several hundred meters. However, deep drilling at oceanic core complexes has recovered gabbroic sequences with virtually no serpentinized peridotite. We propose a revised model for oceanic core complex development based on consideration of the rheological differences between gabbro and serpentinized peridotite: emplacement of a large intrusive gabbro body into a predominantly peridotite host is followed by localization of strain around the margins of the pluton, eventually resulting in an uplifted gabbroic core surrounded by deformed serpentinite. Oceanic core complexes may therefore reflect processes associated with relatively enhanced periods of mafic intrusion within overall magma-poor regions of slow- and ultra-slow-spreading ridges.

Abstract

Our newly obtained data on the geochemistry and age of plagiogranite-gabbronorite association in the oceanic core complex of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) at 5A degrees 10'S suggest close genetic relations between these rocks in this segment of the ridge. The U/Pb zircon age of an oceanic plagiogranite (OPG) sample is 1.059 +/- 0.055 Ma and is in good agreement with the zircon age of plutonic rocks in the oceanic core complex of northern MAR. A distinctive geochemical feature of the rocks is their unusually depleted Sr-87/Sr-86 and Nd-143/Nd-144 ratios, which suggest that the plutonic rocks of the gabbronorite-plagiogranite association in MAR at 5A degrees 10'S could be derived from the most strongly depleted mantle reservoir of all known to occur beneath the axial MAR zone. The COMAGMAT-5.2 numerical thermodynamic simulation of the possible crystallization links between the plagiogranite and gabbronorite from the MAR segment at 5A degrees 10'S led us to conclude that the leading role in the origin of the plagiogranite was played by a two-stage process: the partial melting of the gabbronorite and the subsequent fractionation of the newly generated melt. The regional differences between the isotopic-geochemical parameters of MAR plagiogranites can, perhaps, reflect local specifics of so-called hydrothermal anatexis, such as the geochemical features of the rocks involved in this process and the parameters of the hydrothermal process, for example, variations in the W/R ratio.

Postdrilling research results summarized here constrain the structure and lithology of the Central Dome of this oceanic core complex. The dominantly gabbroic sequence recovered contrasts with predrilling predictions; application of the ground truth in subsequent geophysical processing has produced self-consistent models for the Central Dome. The presence of many thin interfingered petrologic units indicates that the intrusions forming the domal core were emplaced over a minimum of 100–220 kyr, and not as a single magma pulse. Isotopic and mineralogical alteration is intense in the upper 100 m but decreases in intensity with depth. Below 800 m, alteration is restricted to narrow zones surrounding faults, veins, igneous contacts, and to an interval of locally intense serpentinization in olivine-rich troctolite. Hydration of the lithosphere occurred over the complete range of temperature conditions from granulite to zeolite facies, but was predominantly in the amphibolite and greenschist range. Deformation of the sequence was remarkably localized, despite paleomagnetic indications that the dome has undergone at least 45° rotation, presumably during unroofing via detachment faulting. Both the deformation pattern and the lithology contrast with what is known from seafloor studies on the adjacent Southern Ridge of the massif. There, the detachment capping the domal core deformed a 100 m thick zone and serpentinized peridotite comprises ∼70% of recovered samples. We develop a working model of the evolution of Atlantis Massif over the past 2 Myr, outlining several stages that could explain the observed similarities and differences between the Central Dome and the Southern Ridge.

Major element compositions indicate variable degrees of melt depletion and refertilization as well as local hydrothermal metasomatism. Strongest evidence for melt-rock interactions are correlated Light Rare Earth Element (LREE) and High Field Strength Element (HFSE) additions at sites 1270 and 1271. In contrast, hydrothermal alteration at Sites 1274, 1272, and 1268 causes LREE mobility associated with minor HFSE variability, reflecting the low solubility of HFSE in aqueous solutions. Site 1274 contains the least-altered, highly refractory, peridotite with strong depletion in LREE and shows a gradual increase in the intensity of isochemical serpentinization; except for the addition of H2O which causes a mass gain of up to 20 g/100 g. The formation of magnetite is reflected in decreasing Fe2+/Fe3+ ratios. This style of alteration is referred to as rock-dominated serpentinization. In contrast, fluid-dominated serpentinization at Site 1268 is characterized by gains in sulfur and development of U-shaped REE pattern with strong positive Eu anomalies which are also characteristic for hot (350 to 400°C) vent-type fluids discharging from black smoker fields. Serpentinites at Site 1268 were overprinted by talc alteration under static conditions due to interaction with high aSiO2 fluids causing the development of smooth, LREE-enriched patterns with pronounced negative Eu anomalies. These results show that hydrothermal fluid-peridotite and fluid-serpentinite interaction processes are an important factor regarding the budget of exchange processes between the lithosphere and the hydrosphere in slow spreading environments., ODP is sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and participating countries under management of Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI), Inc.

Abstract

A post hoc analysis was performed using combined data from two Phase I tolerability/immunogenicity studies of monovalent human papillomavirus type 11 (HPV11) or HPV16 L1 virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines. The goal was to determine if the HPV16 L1 VLP vaccine protected against HPV16 infection. Vaccine or placebo was given at 0, 2 and 6 months. HPV16 infection was defined by positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results following vaccination. The incidence of HPV infection was observed to be 0 cases per 100 person-years at risk in the vaccine group, and 5 cases per 100 person-years at risk in the control group. These results support the institution of larger efficacy trials for HPV L1 VLP vaccines.

Abstract

Two candidate vaccines to prevent infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) Types 11 and 16 were studied in similar double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation trials. L1 virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines were made from recombinant L1 capsid protein of HPV11 or HPV16. Participants received 10, 20, 50, or 100 microg of HPV11 L1 VLPs, 10, 40, or 80 microg of HPV16 L1 VLPs, or placebo at Months 0, 2, and 6. Serum geometric mean antibody levels at Month 7 were 258, 644, 647, and 1112 milli-Merck units (mMU)/ml for the 10, 20, 50, and 100 microg doses of the HPV11 L1 VLP vaccine, respectively, and 479, 808, and 732 mMU/ml for the 10, 40, and 80 microg doses of the HPV16 L1 VLP vaccine, respectively. Antibody to HPV11 and 16 was still present at Month 36 in 96.8 and 93.5% of vaccinees, respectively. Both vaccines were well tolerated and were associated with only mild to moderate injection-site reactions.

Abstract

The testing of Convulsofin carried out in 220 patients at 14 clinics over a period of six months confirms the international experience gained with valproic acid and sodium valproinate. The main field of application of Convulsofin according to the experience gained will again be the treatment of fits in generalised primary epilepsy for which it permits to carry out a monotherapy to a remarkable extent. The favourable effect of the preparation in photosensitivity could be confirmed. Also in generalised secondary epilepsy and in fits of partial epilepsy. Convulsofin is partly effective, so that it can recommended as a co-medication in the treatment of therapy-resistant forms of these epilepsies which are difficult to treat. Decrease in thrombocytes, transient increase in serum transaminases, gastrointestinal disorders, loss of hair and undesired increases in body-weight were the more frequently occurring side-effects.

Abstract

Tetanus infection as the cause of rectus abdominis sheath hematoma has not been previously reported in the literature. Such a patient, diagnosed by computed tomography scanning, is presented. The place of computed tomography examination in diagnosis of rectus sheath hematomas and abdominal wall pathology is emphasized.

Abstract

This is a report on 15 children who, after having committed acts of taking their own lives voluntarily and intentionally, were admitted, between 1971 and 1974, to the Pediatric Clinic of Neuropsychiatry, Brandenburg District Mental Hospital. The number of boys (10) was greater than the number of girls (5). Fourteen children were at the age of puberty (i.e., between 12 and 15), while only one child was under 10. A brief description is given of the various causes of suicidal acts committed by children. The children's personalities are also described. All of the patients, right from the start of impatient treatment, were included in a program of drawing and painting in addition to the medical and psychotherapeutic treatment given to them. For this creative activity, a studio was made available where the children, in the presence of the therapeutist, could make drawings or pictures with paints. The explanations given by the patients of their respective drawings or pictures were carefully recorded by the therapeutist. The pictures made by two patients, who had made several attempts upon their own lives, are presented along with the explanations given by them. One of the boys is a child who had been in an educational establishment for many years, while the other boy came from an orderly family. Regarding the therapeutical drawing and painting program it can be said that this nonverbal form of expression results in the children becoming physically and psychically relaxed, making them willing to freely explain the contents of their drawings and pictures.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
