The leaf of Ziziphus spina-christi L. (Christ's thorn jujube), locally known as "Bidara Arab", contains natural antibiotics that could be used for acne remedies, cleansing the skin of impurities, and keeping the skin from damage. The study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of the leaf extract of Z. spina-christ in suppressing the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. The leaf extract was carried out by maceration in ethanol solvent (1: 10 ratio). The chemical compounds of the extract were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using the standard methods. The antibacterial activity of the extract (5%, 10%, 25 %, 50%, 100 %) was assessed using the diffusion agar method with sterile filter disc papers on MHA (Mueller Hinton Agar) inoculated with P. acnes. The experiment was designed completely random, with three replications. Clear inhibition zones around the filter disc indicated the antibacterial activity of the extract. Data analysis was carried out using the One-Way Anova and continued with the Duncan test at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the leaf extract contained phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids. The leaf extract inhibited the growth of P. acnes with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 5% and an inhibitory zone was 2.81± 0.45 mm. The study concluded that the ethanolic extract of Z. spina-christi has the potential to be developed as a natural remedy for acne. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
