This paper demonstrates the field performance of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) as a non-destructive testing tool to predict in situ asphalt pavement. In previous study, GPR has been used successfully in a variety of pavements application such as determining layer thickness, detecting subsurface distresses, and others. Nuclear Density Gauge (NDG) is specifically designed to measure the moisture and density of soils, aggregates, cement, and lime treated materials, and also to measure the density of asphalt concrete. Alternative analysis approaches by correlating the GPR and NDG data had been performed for density prediction of asphalt pavement. A density model name Al-Qadi, Lahouar, and Leng (ALL model) was used to predict the density of the asphalt pavement from the GPR data correlate with NDG database. This study shows that density for asphalt pavement from GPR data provide reasonably accurate density prediction when ALL model approach was used.

For more than 35 years of operation and utilization of the neutron source from the PUSPATI TRIGA Reactor (RTP), the reactor has faced ageing challenged and degradation in several structures, systems and components (SSCs). Several modifications have been made since 2010 to ensure safe operation and sustainability, however, due to recent intensively request from the user to use the neutron source, it has shown degradation behaviour in the reactor SSCs including the biological shielding of the RTP. In this paper, it described the assessment of the safety barriers integrity specifically at the biological shielding concrete structure of the RTP. In-service inspection and X-Ray diffraction methodology were used to investigate and analyses the condition. The investigation results show no irregularity except slightly degradation occurrences has been noticed and aware.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a high resolution electromagnetic techniques that is designed primarily to investigate the shallow subsurface of the earth, building material, roads and bridges. GPR was also able to detect water leaks in the underground distribution system. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the validity and effectives of GPR technology in detecting water leakage using two different types of pipes which are metal and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes. Experiment was conducted using GPR 800 MHz antenna using 4 inch pipe with diameter of hole is ¼ inch to stimulate the leakage. GPR identify leaks in buried water pipes either by detecting underground voids created by the leaking water as it erodes the material around the pipe or by detecting anomalous change in the properties of the materials around pipes due to the water saturation.

A water pipe is any pipe or tubes designed to transport and deliver water or treated drinking with appropriate quality, quantity and pressure to consumers. The varieties include large diameter main pipes, which supply entire towns, smaller branch lines that supply a street or group of buildings or small diameter pipes located within individual buildings. This distribution system (underground) is used to describe collectively the facilities used to supply water from its source to the point of usage. Therefore, a leaking in the underground water distribution piping system increases the likelihood of safe water leaving the source or treatment facility becoming contaminated before reaching the consumer. Most importantly, leaking can result in wastage of water which is precious natural resources. Gamma rays are better absorbed by materials with high atomic numbers and high density. Steel, lead, depleted uranium, concrete, water or sand can be used as gamma shielding. Lead and steel are normally used for making doors of the bunker and to reduce radiation scatter. Depleted uranium is used for gamma container. Water is used in nuclear reactor as neutron and gamma absorber. Sand is used for mobile hot cell. However concrete is the most common and cheap material for gamma radiation bunker. In this research, concrete made from hematite aggregates was used to make chevron blocks for a temporary construction of labyrinth bunker. This paper explains and discusses the gamma attenuation around labyrinth bunker with concrete containing hematite aggregates.

Concrete is the most common and cheap material for radiation shielding. Compressive strength is the main parameter checked for determining concrete quality. However, for shielding purposes density is the parameter that needs to be considered. X- and -gamma radiations are effectively absorbed by a material with high atomic number and high density such as concrete. The high strength normally implies to higher density in concrete but this is not always true. This paper explains and discusses the correlation between rebound hammer testing and density for concrete containing hematite aggregates. A comparison is also made with normal concrete i.e. concrete containing crushed granite.

Hollow jewelry made from combination of gold and other material was found in the market. At the outside it is made of gold and the inside layer is made of other material. X-ray fluorescent method cannot detect the inside material that was covered by gold. This paper explained the experimental result of ultrasonic inspection of fake gold used for jewelry. The ultrasonic pulse echo contact method was used to measure longitudinal wave velocity in the gold jewelry. The results of measurements are explained and discussed.

The study focuses on practices to facilitate tin smelting industry to reduce radioactive waste product (Tin Slag) by diluting its radioactivity to a safe level and turning it to a safer infrastructural building product. In the process the concrete mix which include Portland cement, sand, tin slag, water and plasticizer are used to produce interlocking brick pavements, piles and other infrastructural products. The mixing method follows DOE (UK) standard method of mixing targeted at in selected compressive strength suitable for its function and durability. A batching machine is used in the mixing and six test cubes are produced for the test. The testing equipment used are a compressional machine, ultrasonic measurement and a Geiger Muller counter to evaluate of the concrete mix to find the lowest emission of radiation surface dose without compromising the strength of concrete mix. The result obtained indicated the radioactivity of tin slag in the mixing process has reduced to background level that is 0.5μSv/h while the strength and workability of the concrete has not been severely affected. In conclusion, the concrete mix with tin slag has shown the potential it can be turned into a safe beneficial infrastructural product with good strength.
