To understand the effects of the glacial meltwater supply on carbonate chemistry and the air-sea CO2 flux within the fjord, water samples were collected in Bowdoin Fjord in northwestern Greenland for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration, total alkalinity (TA), oxygen isotopic ratio (delta O-18), and chlorophyll a concentration analyses in the summers of 2016 and 2017. The partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)) in surface water, calculated from DIC and TA, was less than 200 mu atm, and was significantly lower than that in the atmosphere (399 +/- 3 mu atm). Therefore, surface water of the fjord acts as sink for CO2 in the atmosphere (-4.9 +/- 0.7 mmol m(-2) d(-1)). To evaluate the effects of freshwater and land-derived substances by glacial meltwater on pCO(2) in the fjord, we calculated the changes of pCO(2) in salinity and carbonate chemistry that would result from the inflow of glacial meltwater into the fjord. The calculated pCO(2) was high near the calving front, where the contribution of glacier meltwater was significant. Examination of the relationship between salinity-normalized DIC and TA, which was considered DIC and TA input from the land, suggested that the land-derived high pCO(2) freshwater affected mainly by the remineralization of the organic matter by bacterial activity was supplied to the Bowdoin Fjord.

On the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East, 405 glaciers with an estimated total mass of 49 Gt were reported in the 1970s. These have been retreating at an accelerated rate since the start of the 21st century. Because glacier studies in this region are scarce, ice loss and its influence on sea level rise and regional environments is poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed satellite data to quantify glacier mass change from 2000 to 2016 in six major glacier-covered regions on the peninsula. The mean rate of the glacier mass change over the study period was -0.46 +/- 0.01 m w.e. a(-1) (total mass change was -4.9 +/- 0.1 Gt, -304.2 +/- 9.1 Mt a(-1)), which is slightly lower than other regions in mid-latitude and subarctic zones. The mass loss accelerated from >-0.33 +/- 0.02 m w.e. a(-1) in the period 2000-2006/2010 to <-1.65 +/- 0.12 m w.e. a(-1) in 2006/2010-2015/16. The increase in mass loss is attributed to a rise in average decadal summer temperatures observed in the region (+0.68 degrees C from 1987-99 to 2000-13). Moreover, a recent trend in Pacific decadal oscillation suggests future acceleration of mass loss due to a decline in winter precipitation.

An increasing body of work has shown the potential impacts of subglacial discharge from marine-terminating glaciers on the marine environment around Greenland. Upwelling of nutrients associated with rising buoyant plumes near the front of marine-terminating glaciers plays a key role in maintaining the high productivity of connected fjords. The response of protist communities to subglacial discharges into fjords nevertheless remains poorly understood. Here we show data of water properties, nutrients, and protist communities during two summers in 2018 and 2019 in a Greenlandic fjord system fed by marine-terminating glaciers. This study included the period of intense summer melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet in 2019. The data revealed high nutrient concentrations in 2019 that were attributed to intensified upwelling of nutrients and dissolved iron into the subsurface layer. The source of the iron and the nutrients was subglacial discharge and deep fjord water, respectively. Intense glacial discharges in 2019 mitigated nitrate and phosphate limitations of phytoplankton in the fjord and resulted in an increase of chlorophyll a in the subsurface layer and growth of large diatoms. Heterotrophic protists such as dinoflagellates, tintinnids, and nanoflagellates were more abundant in the summer of 2019. We concluded that nutrient upwelling by subglacial discharges was the major driver of the structure of lower trophic levels in fjord ecosystems. We hypothesize that the more intense melting of glaciers and related increase in subglacial discharge will enhance nutrient upwelling, and increased summer productivity in fjords until the glaciers retreat and terminate on land.

Measurements of underwater sound are still scarce in the rapidly changing Arctic. Tele-seismically detectable glacial earthquakes caused by iceberg calving have been known for nearly two decades but their underwater sound levels remain undocumented. Here, we present near-source underwater sound records from a kilometer-scale iceberg calving associated with a glacial earthquake. Records were obtained using an ocean-bottom lander deployed near the calving front of a Greenlandic tidewater Bowdoin Glacier in July 2019. An underwater-detonation-like signal with an overall duration of 30 min and two major phases owing to iceberg detachment and disintegration corresponded to extreme source sound levels (225 +/- 10 dB(p2p)( )re 1 mu Pa) and acoustic energy on the order of 10(8-)(10) J or 0.1-7.6 tonnes TNT-equivalent. Our estimates and comparison with other anthropogenic and natural sources suggest that this type of geophysical event is among the loudest sounds in the Arctic. Such high sound levels are important for estimating the noise budget of the ocean and possible impacts on endemic Arctic species exposed to such sounds. The sound of calving may cause direct mechanical damage to the hearing of marine mammals such as narwhals and seals present in the glacial fjord. (C) 2022 Author(s).
