A systematic investigation on the evolution of a prolate cloud at an Hii boundary is conducted using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) in order to understand the mechanism for a variety of irregular morphological structures found at the boundaries of various Hii regions. The prolate molecular clouds in this investigation are set with their semi-major axes at inclinations between 0 and 90 degrees to a plane parallel ionizing radiation flux. A set of 4 parameters, the number density n, the ratio of major to minor axis gamma, the inclination angle phi and the incident flux F_EUV, are used to define the initial state of the simulated clouds. The dependence of the evolution of a prolate cloud under Radiation Driven Implosion (RDI) on each of the four parameters is investigated. It is found that: i) in addition to the well studied standard type A, B or C Bright Rimmed Clouds (BRCs), many other types such as asymmetrical BRCs, filamentary structures and irregular horse-head structures could also be developed at Hii boundaries with only simple initial conditions; ii) the final morphological structures are very sensitive to the 4 initial parameters, especially to the initial density and the inclination; iii) The previously defined ionizing radiation penetration depth can still be used as a good indicator of the final morphology. Based on the simulation results, the efficiency of the RDI triggered star formation from clouds of different initial conditions is also estimated. We have made an extensive survey of emission-line stars in the IC 1396 HII region to investigate the low-mass population of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. A total of 639 H-alpha emission-line stars were detected in an area of 4.2 deg^2 and their i'-photometry was measured. Their spatial distribution exhibits several aggregates near the elephant trunk globule (Rim A) and bright-rimmed clouds at the edge of the HII region (Rim B and SFO 37, 38, 39, 41), and near HD 206267, which is the main exciting star of the HII region. Based on the extinction estimated from the near-infrared (NIR) color-color diagram, we have selected pre-main sequence star candidates associated with IC 1396. The age and mass were derived from the extinction corrected color-magnitude diagram and theoretical pre-main sequence tracks. Most of our PMS candidates have ages of < 3 Myr and masses of 0.2-0.6 Mo. Although it appears that only a few stars were formed in the last 1 Myr in the east region of the exciting star, the age difference among subregions in our surveyed area is not clear from the statistical test. Our results may suggest that massive stars were born after the continuous formation of low-mass stars for 10 Myr. The birth of the exciting star could be the late stage of slow but contiguous star formation in the natal molecular cloud. The Serpens South embedded cluster, which is located at the constricted part in a long filamentary infrared dark cloud, is believed to be in very early stage of cluster formation. We present results of near-infrared (JHKs) polarization observations toward the filamentary cloud. Our polarization measurements of near-infrared point sources indicate a well-ordered global magnetic field that is perpendicular to the main filament, implying that the magnetic field is likely to have controlled the formation of the main filament. On the other hand, the sub-filaments, which converge on the central part of the cluster, tend to run along the magnetic field. The global magnetic field appears to be curved in the southern part of the main filament. Such morphology is consistent with the idea that the global magnetic field is distorted by gravitational contraction along the main filament toward the northern part that contains larger mass. Applying the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, the magnetic field strength is roughly estimated to be a few x 100 microgauss, suggesting that the filamentary cloud is close to magnetically critical as a whole., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of the newly discovered McNeil's nebula in Orion using the JHKs-band simultaneous observations with the near-infrared (NIR) camera SIRIUS on the IRSF 1.4m telescope. The cometary infrared nebula is clearly seen extending toward north and south from the NIR source (V1647 Orionis) that illuminates McNeil's nebula. The compact nebula has an apparent diameter of about 70 arcsec. The nebula is blue (bright in J) and has a cavity structure with two rims extending toward north-east and north-west. The north-east rim is brighter and sharp, while the north-west rim is diffuse. The north-east rim can be traced out to ~ 40 arcsec from the location of the NIR source. In contrast, no cavity structure is seen toward the south, although diffuse nebula is extended out to ~ 20 arcsec. New NIR photometric data show a significant variation in the magnitudes (> 0.15 mag) of the source of McNeil's nebula within a period of one week, that is possibly under the phase of eruptive variables like FUors or EXors., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures in JPEG format. We present sub-arcsecond (FWHM ~ 0".7), NIR JHKs-band images and a high sensitivity radio continuum image at 1280 MHz, using SIRIUS on UH 88-inch telescope and GMRT. The NIR survey covers an area of ~ 24 arcmin^2 with 10-sigma limiting mags of ~ 19.5, 18.4, and 17.3 in J, H, and Ks-band, respectively. Our NIR images are deeper than any JHK surveys to date for the larger area of NGC 7538 star forming region. We construct JHK CC and J-H/J and H-K/K CM diagrams to identify YSOs and to estimate their masses. Based on these CC and CM diagrams, we identified a rich population of YSOs (Class I and Class II), associated with the NGC 7538 region. A large number of red sources (H-K > 2) have also been detected around NGC 7538. We argue that these red stars are most probably PMS stars with intrinsic color excesses. Most of YSOs in NGC 7538 are arranged from the N-W toward S-E regions, forming a sequence in age: the diffuse H II region (N-W, oldest: where most of the Class II and Class I sources are detected); the compact IR core (center); and the regions with the extensive IR reflection nebula and a cluster of red young stars (S-E and S). We find that the slope of the KLF of NGC 7538 is lower than the typical values reported for the young embedded clusters, although equally low values have also been reported in the W3 Main star forming region. From the slope of the KLF and the analysis by Megeath et al. (1996), we infer that the embedded stellar population is comprised of YSOs with an age of ~ 1 Myr. Based on the comparison between models of PMS stars with the observed CM diagram we find that the stellar population in NGC 7538 is primarily composed of low mass PMS stars similar to those observed in the W3 Main star forming region., Comment: 36 pages, 13 figures in JPEG format. We present deep near-infrared (J, H, Ks) images toward an embedded cluster which lies in a C18O clump in the cloud C of the Vela Molecular Ridge. This cluster has at least ~ 350 members and a radius of ~ 0.5 pc. The stellar surface number density is approximately 3000 stars pc^-2 in the central 0.1 pc x 0.1 pc region of the cluster. This is much higher than most of the young clusters within 1 kpc of the Sun. From the comparison of the luminosity function and near-infrared excess fraction with those of other embedded clusters, we estimate that the age of this cluster is approximately 2-3 Myr. This cluster exhibits an excess of brighter stars in its central region, from which we conclude that the more massive stars are located near the cluster center., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures. We present a deep JHKs-band imaging survey of the W3 Main star forming region, using the near-infrared camera, SIRIUS, mounted on the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope. The near-infrared survey covers an area of ~ 24 sq. arcmin with 10 sigma limiting magnitudes of ~ 19.0, 18.1, and 17.3 in J, H, and Ks-band, respectively. We construct JHK color-color and J/J-H and K/H-K color-magnitude diagrams to identify young stellar objects and estimate their masses. Based on these color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, a rich population of YSOs is identified which is associated with the W3 Main region. A large number of previously unreported red sources (H-K > 2) have also been detected around W3 Main. We argue that these red stars are most probably pre-main sequence stars with intrinsic color excesses. We find that the slope of the Ks-band luminosity function of W3 Main is lower than the typical values reported for the young embedded clusters. The derived slope of the KLF is the same as that found by Megeath et al. (1996), from which analysis by Megeath et al. indicates that the W3 Main region has an age in the range of 0.3--1 Myr. Based on the comparison between models of pre-main sequence stars with the observed color-magnitude diagram we find that the stellar population in W3 Main is primarily composed of low mass pre-main sequence stars. We have carried out a brown dwarf search over an area of 14' x 23' near the central portion of the Pleiades open cluster in five optical and near infrared bands (i', Z, J, H, Ks) with 10 sigma detection limits of i' = 22.0, J = 20.0 and Ks = 18.5 mag. The surveyed area has large extinction in excess of Av = 3 in the Pleiades region. We detected four new brown dwarf candidates from the colour-colour (J-K, i'-J) and the colour-magnitude (J, i'-K) diagrams. We estimated their masses as 0.046 Msun down to 0.028 Msun. The least massive one is estimated to have a mass smaller than Roque 25 or int-pl-IZ-69, and maybe the lowest mass object found so far in the Pleiades cluster., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the evolution of elliptical galaxies at z >~ 1 on the basis of a sample of 247 Extremely Red Objects (EROs) with R-Ks >= 3.35 (AB) and Ks <= 22.1 (AB) constructed from BVRi'z'JHKs multicolor data of a 114 arcmin2 area in the Subaru/XMM Deep Survey Field. By fitting template spectra of old ellipticals (OEs) and young, dusty starbursts (DSs) to the multicolor data, we classify EROs into these two classes and estimate their redshifts. We find that 58% of the EROs in our sample belong to the OE class and that 24% of the OEs are fit by a spectrum having a disk component with the B-band bulge-to-total luminosity ratio of <= 0.9. We compare the observed surface density of OEs with predictions from passive evolution models. We then derive rest-frame B-band luminosity functions (LFs) of OEs in our sample at z=1-1.5 and 1.5-2.5. We find that the LF at z=1-1.5 roughly agrees with the LF of local ellipticals if a dimming of 1.3 mag from z=1.25 to the present epoch is assumed. On the other hand, the amplitude of the LF at z=1.5-2.5 is found to be lower than that of the local LF by a factor of ~ 3 over the whole range of magnitude observed. Taking account of a strong decrease in the number density of morphologically classified early-type galaxies at z >~ 1.5 found by several authors, we conclude that the majority of ellipticals seen at present have not established either a red color or a smooth 1/4-law profile before z ~ 1.5$. The nature of early life on Earth is difficult to assess because potential Early Archean biosignatures are commonly poorly preserved. Interpretations of such materials have been contested, and abiotic or epigenetic derivations have been proposed (summarized in [1]). Yet, an understanding of Archean life is of astrobiological importance, as knowledge of early evolutionary processes on Earth could provide insight to development of life on other planets. A recently-discovered assemblage of organic microstructures in approx.3 Ga charts of the Farrel Quartzite (FQ) of Australia [2-4] includes unusual spindle-like forms and a variety of spheroids. If biogenicity and syngeneity of these forms could be substantiated, the FQ assemblage would provide a new view of Archean life. Our work uses NanoSIMS to further assess the biogenicity and syngeneity of FQ microstructures. In prior NanoSIMS studies [5-6], we gained an understanding of nano-scale elemental distributions in undisputed microfossils from the Neoproterozoic Bitter Springs Formation of Australia. Those results provide a new tool with which to evaluate poorly preserved materials that we might find in Archean sediments and possibly in extraterrestrial materials. We have applied this tool to the FQ forms.

A critical step in the search for remnants of potential life forms on other planets lies in our ability to recognize indigenous fragments of ancient microbes preserved in some of Earth's oldest rocks. To this end, we are building a database of nano-scale chemical and morphological characteristics of some of Earth's oldest organic microfossils. We are primarily using the new technology of Nano-Secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) which provides in-situ, nano-scale elemental analysis of trace quantities of organic residues. The initial step was to characterize element composition of well-preserved, organic microfossils from the late Proterozoic (0.8 Ga) Bitter Springs Formation of Australia. Results from that work provide morphologic detail and nitrogen/carbon ratios that appear to reflect the well-established biological origin of these 0.8 Ga fossils.
