Abstract

Genetic factors explain a major proportion of human height variation, but differences in mean stature have also been found between socio-economic categories suggesting a possible effect of environment. By utilizing a classical twin design which allows decomposing the variation of height into genetic and environmental components, we tested the hypothesis that environmental variation in height is greater in offspring of lower educated parents. Twin data from 29 cohorts including 65,978 complete twin pairs with information on height at ages 1 to 69 years and on parental education were pooled allowing the analyses at different ages and in three geographic-cultural regions (Europe, North America and Australia, and East Asia). Parental education mostly showed a positive association with offspring height, with significant associations in mid-childhood and from adolescence onwards. In variance decomposition modeling, the genetic and environmental variance components of height did not show a consistent relation to parental education. A random-effects meta-regression analysis of the aggregate-level data showed a trend towards greater shared environmental variation of height in low parental education families. In conclusion, in our very large dataset from twin cohorts around the globe, these results provide only weak evidence for the study hypothesis.

Abstract

Background Body mass index (BMI) shows strong continuity over childhood and adolescence and high childhood BMI is the strongest predictor of adult obesity. Genetic factors strongly contribute to this continuity, but it is still poorly known how their contribution changes over childhood and adolescence. Thus, we used the genetic twin design to estimate the genetic correlations of BMI from infancy to adulthood and compared them to the genetic correlations of height. Methods We pooled individual level data from 25 longitudinal twin cohorts including 38,530 complete twin pairs and having 283,766 longitudinal height and weight measures. The data were analyzed using Cholesky decomposition offering genetic and environmental correlations of BMI and height between all age combinations from 1 to 19 years of age. Results The genetic correlations of BMI and height were stronger than the trait correlations. For BMI, we found that genetic correlations decreased as the age between the assessments increased, a trend that was especially visible from early to middle childhood. In contrast, for height, the genetic correlations were strong between all ages. Age-to-age correlations between environmental factors shared by co-twins were found for BMI in early childhood but disappeared altogether by middle childhood. For height, shared environmental correlations persisted from infancy to adulthood. Conclusions Our results suggest that the genes affecting BMI change over childhood and adolescence leading to decreasing age-to-age genetic correlations. This change is especially visible from early to middle childhood indicating that new genetic factors start to affect BMI in middle childhood. Identifying mediating pathways of these genetic factors can open possibilities for interventions, especially for those children with high genetic predisposition to adult obesity.

Abstract

Objective: To analyze how parental education modifies the genetic and environmental variances of body mass index (BMI) from infancy to old age in three geographic-cultural regions. Methods: A pooled sample of 29 cohorts including 143 499 twin individuals with information on parental education and BMI from 1 to 79 years (299 201 BMI measures) was analyzed by genetic twin modeling. Results: Until 4 years of age, parental education was not consistently associated with BMI. Thereafter, higher parental education was associated with lower BMI in males and females. Total and additive genetic variances of BMI were smaller in the offspring of highly educated parents than in those whose parents had low education. Especially in North American and Australian children, environmental factors shared by co-twins also contributed to the higher BMI variation in the low educational category. In Europe and East Asia, the associations of parental education with mean BMI and BMI variance were weaker than in North America and Australia. Conclusions: Lower parental education is associated with higher mean and larger genetic variance of BMI after early childhood, especially in the obesogenic macro-environment. The interplay between genetic predisposition, childhood social environment and macro-social context is important for socio-economic differences in BMI.

Abstract

Persistent radicals, which are generated from 2‐oxindole or benzofuranone dimers, are useful tools for designing the radical‐based cross‐coupling reaction to provide molecules containing a quaternary carbon. The persistent radical is accessible from both the dimer and monomer; however, the reactivity difference between these substrates for the oxidative cross‐coupling reaction is not fully understood, most likely because of the mechanistic complexity. Here, we present details of an aerobic cross‐dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction using various monomers and catechols. UV‐Vis analysis and mechanistic control experiments showed that the monomer is less reactive than the dimer under aerobic conditions. Our Pd(II)‐BINAP‐μ‐hydroxo complex significantly improved the reactivity of the monomers for the aerobic CDC reaction with catechols, yielding results comparable to those of the corresponding dimer. The procedure, which enables the generation of the persistent radical in situ, is particularly useful when employing the monomer that is not readily converted to the corresponding dimer. 24. Courtesy stigma of parents of children with Down syndrome: Adaptation process and transcendent stage.

Abstract

Courtesy stigma, which arises from close connections to people with stigmatized characteristics, negatively affects interpersonal relations. This study aimed to evaluate courtesy stigma and the adaptation process of parents of children with Down syndrome based on semi‐structured interviews with 23 Japanese parents. The interview themes were (a) negatively perceived interpersonal experiences and coping strategies; (b) information disclosure and others' responses; and (c) positively perceived interpersonal experiences. The interview data were transcribed and analyzed based on a grounded theory approach. The results suggested that parents perceived and experienced multidimensional courtesy stigma, and they used various coping strategies categorized in combinations of passive–active and internal–external. All parents disclosed information about their child's diagnosis to others, and reverse disclosure (i.e., revealing own relations with people with disabilities) was characteristically observed thereafter. Through active interaction and reflection, the parents cultivated social relationships, compassion, world views, and community involvement, which led to the transcendent stage. However, internal conflict as a mediator between people with and without Down syndrome re‐emerged even after achieving the transcendent stage. These findings could help to develop interventions in genetic counseling for parents to deal with interpersonal relationship difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Genetic factors explain a major proportion of human height variation, but differences in mean stature have also been found between socio-economic categories suggesting a possible effect of environment. By utilizing a classical twin design which allows decomposing the variation of height into genetic and environmental components, we tested the hypothesis that environmental variation in height is greater in offspring of lower educated parents. Twin data from 29 cohorts including 65,978 complete twin pairs with information on height at ages 1 to 69 years and on parental education were pooled allowing the analyses at different ages and in three geographic-cultural regions (Europe, North America and Australia, and East Asia). Parental education mostly showed a positive association with offspring height, with significant associations in mid-childhood and from adolescence onwards. In variance decomposition modeling, the genetic and environmental variance components of height did not show a consistent relation to parental education. A random-effects meta-regression analysis of the aggregate-level data showed a trend towards greater shared environmental variation of height in low parental education families. In conclusion, in our very large dataset from twin cohorts around the globe, these results provide only weak evidence for the study hypothesis.

Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among Japanese children. The parent and child versions of the Child Assessment Schedule (CAS) were utilized to carry out the analysis. CAS is a structured interview developed for clinical and epidemiological studies with children. Results indicated the effectiveness of the Child Assessment Schedule in determining the psychopathology of Japanese children.

Abstract

Objective The objective of this study was to analyze how parental education modifies the genetic and environmental variances of BMI from infancy to old age in three geographic-cultural regions. Methods A pooled sample of 29 cohorts including 143,499 twin individuals with information on parental education and BMI from age 1 to 79 years (299,201 BMI measures) was analyzed by genetic twin modeling. Results Until 4 years of age, parental education was not consistently associated with BMI. Thereafter, higher parental education level was associated with lower BMI in males and females. Total and additive genetic variances of BMI were smaller in the offspring of highly educated parents than in those whose parents had low education levels. Especially in North American and Australian children, environmental factors shared by co-twins also contributed to the higher BMI variation in the low education level category. In Europe and East Asia, the associations of parental education with mean BMI and BMI variance were weaker than in North America and Australia. Conclusions Lower parental education level is associated with higher mean BMI and larger genetic variance of BMI after early childhood, especially in the obesogenic macro-environment. The interplay among genetic predisposition, childhood social environment, and macro-social context is important for socioeconomic differences in BMI.

application/pdf, 紀要論文, In this paper we report the results of the two-year (2013-2014) follow-up research on\ Ochanomizu University attached school students' critical thinking disposition and skills of\ practical use of information. Focusing on elementary school students' curiosity for learning,\ we investigated exploratorily the characteristics of epistemic curiosity and the relationships\ among epistemic curiosity, in-class learning experience, critical thinking disposition, and the\ skills of practical use of information during the transition from elementary and junior high\ school. Surveys were given to 125 students in the sixth grade in elementary and again 115 in\ the seventh grade in junior high school. A sample of 62 students responded to the two-year\ surveys. The main findings are as follows: 1) Compared to the previous study, six graders'\ motivation of communication and curiosity for math were relatively high, and present data\ did not show specific gender difference in students' preferences of arts and sciences. 2) Both\ epistemic curiosity and in-class learning experience were positively related to the concurrent\ critical thinking disposition. 3) Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that sixth graders'\ critical thinking disposition predicted positively to seventh g raders' the skills of practical use of\ information.

application/pdf, 紀要論文, The present study examined a causal relationship between epistemic curiosity and perceived understanding of core subjects, i.e., Japanese, English, social studies, mathematics, and natural science in high school students. The study utilized a two-year panel data collected under Ochanomizu high-school/university joint education program. A sample of 144 female high school students participated in the two measurement occasions. Structural equation modeling was employed to test five cross-lagged effect models of the reciprocal causal relationship between the curiosity in and understanding of the subjects. Results indicated that the relationship varied depending on the subject. Curiosity in social studies showed statistically significant positive effects on subsequent perceived understanding of the subject whereas higher levels of understanding in mathematics and natural science led to an increase in curiosity in the subjects. However, any causal relations were indicated in Japanese and English. The implications of these findings are discussed.

application/pdf, 紀要論文, The present study examined whether students’ curiosity and study efforts (i.e., quantity and frequency of study outside class) can mediate the relationship between preferences for teaching and academic performance among those attending Ochanomizu University Senior High School. Various measures assessing the students’ levels of study efforts and attitudes were adopted from the nationwide survey, and in an attempt to reliably measure students ’ academic performance, both subjective (i.e., perceived level of understanding and scholastic rank) and objective (i.e., scores of a nationwide standardized examination) indicators were used. The structural equation modeling analyses using a pooled dataset (N ＝484; all females) from cohorts between the years of 2003 and 2008 validated the hypothesis in which more favorable evaluation toward teaching is associated with a higher level of curiosity, which in turn leads to more study efforts that consequently results in better academic performance. The model was verified even after controlling for students’ year at school and cohort effects. Results are discussed to call for the\ necessity for effective and quality teaching to satisfy students’ desires to learn.
